shooting at a sikh temple on sunday as a possible act of domestic terrorism. a lone gunman opened fire killing six people. marla tellez has more on the investigation. it's a tragic story, marla. >> another shooting after the shooting in colorado action it's horrific. it's almost 24 hours since terror struck at the sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. still that gunman has yet to be identified but officials say his name could be released as early as this morning. officials only saying at this point he is a white man in his 40s, possibly linked to the white supremacy movement. shortly after the shooting officials searched this home here, not far from the temple where they think the suspect lived. authorities say the shooting happened in between services, seven people in all were killed. that includes the gunman who was shot and killed by a police officer. three more are in critical condition today including the officer who first approached the shooter. the good news is he is expected

to survive. also among the injured, an uncle to a bay area man who belongs to a sikh temple in san jose. members there telling us they are often mistaken for muslims and since 9/11 that's tougher than ever. >> having nearly a million sikh in this country, here almost 100 years that we still struggle to prove who we are and that somebody could go into a place of peace that they could pick that spot to do something so bad is shocking. >> the sikh temple in san jose is believed to be the largest outside of india. san jose police say officers are now paying more attention to it in the wake of that shooting as a precaution. police in milwaukee as well as the fbi, they are set to give an update at 8:00 this morning. >> thank you, marla. >> new this morning, eight people, that's right, eight people recovering after two

infants in a serious crash on east bay highway managed to survive. it happened 12:45 this morning on highway 4 east of railroad avenue in pittsburg. one car carrying all eight people rolled over from the road to the right shoulder. investigators say all eight of the victims are conscious at this point and have injuries ranking from cuts and scrapes to back pain. one child was air lifted to children's hospital in oakland. >> a man and a teenager shot on the streets of east san jose. police are trying to track down the person who pulled the trigger. the victims were shot last night on south white road. both victims are expected to survive. investigators have not released a description of any possible suspects but officers say that shooting might be gang related. >> some think this is genius, others call it crazy a. plan to pair shelter dogs with

ex-panhandlers. christie has reaction to this out of the box solution to a couple of city problems. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. you ask people in san francisco what some of the big problems are here and certainly homelessness is at the top of the list. well, now there is a curious new program that starts today and it teams up panhandlers and puppies. in exchange for giving up panhandling they would get housing and a little bit of cash, they also get a dog. the idea here is that this would help the city to deal with hundreds of strays that are brought in each year to animal control. the community housing partnership would screen the applicants and make sure that they are not hoarders and not a threat to any animal. peta, they are not a fan putting up about $10,000 to try and stop it saying basically it's like playing russian roulette with the dogs. the mayor's chief of homelessness say it's worth a try. >> whether people are poor, they

are people. what are the the needs that they have and how can we address them. pushing people around has not showing a lot of success in my opinion. >> reporter: so, the program starts this afternoon with ten caregivers. they get training in animal care, they get job skills and up to $75 per week to help care for the animal. they also get housing and the dog food is provided for them. how is this paid for? that was my question. it was paid for with a $10,000 donation. it's a pilot program and it's scheduled to run for two months. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:08. work on the benicia bridge could affect the morning commute. several lanes will change as caltrans install new automated toll collection system. it will happen between 8:00 in the evening and noon every day until friday. two fast track lanes will be closed during work hours. watch out for directions on

and then you get swept away for three weeks being at training camp. then knowing that i had not got tune see them yet flew the prelims and the semis and just to see their faces and to hug my mom, i don't tend to get that emotional. rebecca was asking me how are you not crying on the podium. i'm so happy and excited. seeing my mom, it rushes back everything that we fought for and how many sacrifices made and my husband, to push through my dream and get to this level. it's incredible to embrace your family after that. >> congratulations, congratulation bsing the supportive husband. >> i'm so proud of what she's accomplished. >> guys, you better get back to the bay area. a lot of people rooting for you. by the way, is this not a good looking and tall couple. i have to get on my tippy toes. >> show stoppers. >> a lot of hardware. thanks a lot.

turning to the rest of today's news at 5:16. after eight months of traveling more than 350 million miles in space, nasa back on mars. >> we go from the olympics out into the galaxy. it's curiosity the rover landing overnight and it's sending back pictures this morning. and data as it begins the search for any signs of life. stephanie chuang is live right now in mountain view's nasa ames research center. scientists of course are celebrating a big deal out there. >> reporter: good morning. a big deal. unparalleled event really. and we're told about 7,000 people came here to nasa ames throughout yesterday and last night just to witness what they could. you see the equipment behind me. they had live broadcasts of mission control an hour before the 10:30 landing. also here was research scientist michael sims who joins us. thank you so much. i know you said the crowd was cheering but you've been involved in the mars program 25 years. what was the moment like for

you? >> so i was really worried that we might have done something wrong because you have to get all of the steps exactly right. we've lost mission before with just a foot pad swinging too much and the rockets turned off. it has to fit exactly to make it succeed. >> there were so many components and it was successful so you were worried. >> yeah. i was but also delighted the way it ended and how well the team did putting the parts together. >> reporter: i know curiosity's mission is explore whether mars did or could support life. but what are the implications for us here? >> so, mars is going to be a second home for humanity. at some point we're going to live there as human beings. and this is the lewis and clark. this is the exploration of this planet and what's it about. it has scientific implications as did lewis and clark. it's social implications much larger. >> reporter: thank you so much. we'll be hearing from him throughout the broadcast.

there will be checks on the rover before it sets on its new mission. live at nasa ames, stephanie chuang. >> a botched sale on a flight. >> this was not pretty. we turn it over to cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> good morning. a check on the markets. futures are higher after friday's big rally on wall street, stocks soar on the back of the jobs report which showed that companies added 163,000 new workers in july. more than expected but unemployment rose as more people joined the job search. economists say the job support was strong enough to boost confidence but keep alive the idea the fed may step in with a new stimulus program. asia and european markets are higher at the moment. no economic data out today but we get reports this week on

productivity, the trade deficit and import prices. a look how markets closed on friday t dow jumped 217 to close at 13,096 t nasdaq up 58 to close at 2967. and the big story you were also mentioning, southwest airlines has begun sending refunds to customers billed multiple times for a single flight. the move after a special fare promotion backfired. the sale was to celebrate southwest reaching 3 million facebook fans, customer who is booked flights friday were supposed to receive their tickets at half price. interesting news there. back over to you. >> thank you very much. >> much brighter forecast to tack about than southwest airlines. day one of the work week. >> flying out of san jose on southwest right now won't be a problem. but likely getting out of sfo the next couple of hours will be problematic with a thick marine layer. good monday morning. mondays can be tough. the weather will be nice today.

no extremes. 56 in livermore. temperatures are running nice and comfortable right now. if you wanted to get outdoors in sunnyvale, 60 degrees now, getting on the hot side as we head through the second half of the day. we've got this big area of high pressure that's going to amplify and that's going to bring temperatures up, boost the jet stream to the north so we're going to see little by lit tl marine layer as we head throughout the coming week. so today, looks like a good formation, all of your inland valleys filled with low clouds. they aren't going to last long, burning off by 9:00 a.m. in the east bay and the south bay. noon at the coast, that's going to make for comfortable conditions and by the water today, the pacific ocean, 60s and 70s in places like half moon bay and pacifica. we'll be pulling out the best beach forecast coming up in a few minutes. 91 in livermore. 82, not too bad in san jose. if you are sensitive, if you don't like the heat, you might have to run the ac in san jose today. more likely the case as we head

through wednesday and thursday and temperatures ramp up more. we're talking triple-digit heat friday and saturday. more about that, make sure you're ready for it. we're going to get very strong taste of summer as we head through this week. so 5:22, it was a nice comfortable weekend. we have fog out there. let's economic the drive. >> got to put the freezer pops in there. looking to the south bay we have the closure going on for southbound 880 at stevens creek. head over to 280. you should be okay. speeds are fine for most of the freeways. we have a disabled vehicle northbound 101 at matilda before 237. so there may abtraffic break from the center divide. no slowing shows up here. a live look outside, we'll look at palo alto northbound, easy drive north of university heading up to the san mateo bridge and the city without delay. other side of the bay we'll look at 880 fast fremont truck scales north. there is union landing.

usain bolt to jet past his competitors yesterday. yes, he did just that. he reclaimed his title as the fastest man in the world. bolt set 9.63 seconds. bolt will be awarded with his medal today. his jamaican teammate took the silver and justin gatlin earned the bronze. tomorrow bolt will run his favorite race, the 200 meters. >> how about that, gold medal, world record and another chance, 200 is his favorite. mind blowing. two americans among the fastest women in the world, sonia richards rocked surging to the finish in the women's 400 meter to win by a body length there. that win gives the u.s. its first track and field gold medal of the entire london games. not far behind her, dee dee trotter took the bronze in glitzy fashion. >> so empowered. i know i'm going to make

something happen. >> she knows how to do it up. a busy day for track and field competing in the finals in several events including women's pole vault and shot put. the men's 400 meter hurdle, the women's steeplechase and the men's 400 meters. we'll have much more olympics coverage including a live report from our own raj mathai. he is in london doing it for us. >> we're also following a developing story out of wisconsin. we're learning more about the man police say opened fire on a sikh temple killing six people. marla tellez is in the newsroom with more information for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here's what we can tell you about the suspect. nbc news reports he is a tall bald white man in his 40s, possibly linked to the white supremacy movement. officials say his identity could be released as early as this morning. he was shot and killed by a police officer soon after opening fire inside that temple in oak creek, wisconsin, which

is a suburb of milwaukee. this all happened sunday morning. the names of the six victims also not being released yet although members say the president of the congregation and a priest are among the victims. three more are in critical condition today and that includes the officer who first opened fire on the shooter. he was shot multiple times and is being called a hero. >> because of the heroic actions of our officers they stopped this from being worse than it could have been. >> a bay area man who belongs to a sikh temple in san jose says his uncle is one of the injured. he flew to milwaukee overnight to be by his side. the fbi is leading the investigation, agents along with local police are set to update the investigation at 8:00 this morning. they are calling this an act of domestic terrorism. jon. >> thank you very much. this morning police in richmond are investigating a homicide. it was reported after 9:30 last night on mcdonald avenue near

second street. investigators are gathering information. at this point they have released very few details. >> the superman roller coaster that left a dozen riders stranded is open. >> they have been having troubles with this. it was not flying fast at first, a power glitch stalled the ride for about 20 minutes yesterday. the good news is nobody was on the ride at the time f. you recall back on july 29th, 12 people were stranded on the ride for about two hours stuck 150 feet up in the air before they finally were able to return down to the ground. cal osha trying to figure out why the ride stopped. >> some say it's a win-win for shelter dogs and former panhandlers. christie smith is live in san francisco with more on a controversial plan to help two groups down on their luck. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you talk about pairing

panhandlers and puppies in san francisco and you're bound to get critics, in this case that includes peta. but the idea here is to get panhandlers into city-funded housing and in exchange they give up asking people for change on the streets, get money in their pocket to take care of a pup and the puppies are from the city's animal shelter. they need hopes too. applicants are prescreened to make sure they are not hoarders and are stable enough to care for an animal. what's happened is that peta has come forward, they sent a letter to san francisco mayor ed lee offering $10,000 for the city to find an alternative. but the city is going ahead and trying it. >> whether it's people who are poor, people are homeless, panhandling, they are people and we have to engage with what are the needs that they have and how can we address them because pushing people around is not showing a lot of success in my opinion. >> reporter: so t program start this is afternoon with ten caregivers. they get animal care training,

job skills, dog food and access to veterinary care for their puppy and up to $75 a week to help care for that dog. estimates are that's close to what they would have been making if they were out there panhandling on the streets. my question was, who pays for all of this and the answer is it came from a private donation of about $10,000. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:36. we have reports of a secret meeting with bay area leaders to tell you about. the subject a much discussed plan to move the a's. promising not to reveal details but there are rumors, the talks did include keeping the a's in oakland. according to the sf gate there may have been a presentation by jean quan suggesting a waterfront site at the howard terminal. either way a hurdle remains in san jose if they were going to do a move to the south bay t san

francisco giants refusing to give up their territorial rights to the south bay. >> interesting to see how it turns out. >> a wild battle. >> let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> it's no secret it's going to be hot this week, one of the hottest weeks this summer so far when you average everything out. today and tomorrow will be the coolest days of the week starting with a live look at san rafael. i wanted to point out we have the layered stratus clouds as the sun comes up. mostly cloudy start over the greater bay area. temperatures comfortable. look at some of these. at 60 degrees at 5:37 in the morning down in sunnyvale, 58 in san jose and 56 to start in livermore. great beach days, not just today about every day this week. 2:00 santa cruz 68 degree, 73 at 4:00 but we do have gusty winds, we'll see the sea breeze pick up throughout this afternoon. your hour by hour detail for today works like this.

inland cities about 70 at noon, 92 in the heat of the day, 78 bayside and the coast today comfortable 63 at noon, 68 degrees as you round out the day and much hotter weather ahead. i'll show you when on my seven-day forecast. first, here's that drive. here's mike. >> note to my friends in the control room i messed up the maps. stick with me. let's show you what we have now. on the maps we're looking at the dublin interchange with traffic flowing all right but the westbound direction slowing quite a bit. if i can get over to the map, what it's doing to the flow of traffic at 238. that is a problem. the updated location we got is that it's on 238 northbound as you head up past his sparian. there it is. over the last five minutes on the castro valley "y." two semis and a car wedged. that's the initial report. we're watching this. there could be injuries, this could take time to clear if there are, and this could be

spoke of condition of anonymity. his remarks after syrian television said the cabinet minister was fired from his post. also new this morning in japan a grandson of former president harry truman attend add ceremony in hiroshima marking the anniversary of the first atomic bombing. more than 50,000 gathered near the epicenter of the 1945 blast that destroyed most of the city. the bomb killed an estimated 140,000 people. >> closer to home in arizona, a court appointed psychiatrist is set to testify this week that the suspect in the shooting rampage in arizona is competent to enter a plea. jared lee loughner accused of killing six and wounding 13 others last year. loughner pleaded not guilty the 49 charges but if the judge allows it he is expected to enter a guilty plea during a

hearing scheduled for tuesday. >> a courtroom is the next destination for a jetblue pilot who had a meltdown in a flight. the judge will determine if the former captain is ready to be released from a psychiatric facility. during a flight in march clayton began to act erratically. the passengers grabbed him and subdued him before the plane had to make an emergency landing. clayton was later found not guilty by reason of insanity. no question, big news in outer space, a successful touchdown for nasa after it landed its rover on mars. >> scientists including some from the bay area are hoping to find evidence of life on the red planet. stephanie chuang is live at mountain view's nasa ames research center. >> reporter: good morning. you can see the equipment left

from last night where we're told 7,000 packed here, that there was even a little dance party going on because there was so much excitement about this mission. joining us is michael sims, a research scientist here at nasa ames. you were here last night. you've been involved in the mars program for 25 years. any misstep could have led to a disaster. >> absolutely. so you have to get a whole sequence of steps working together to get to the end. it is the seven minutes of strr pretty accurate. >> speaking of seven minutes of terror, you're talking about the rover going from 13,000 miles an hour to nothing in 6 1/2 minutes or so. ames played a big role. >> absolutely. two big things we did, one of which is testing the parachutes. the biggest telescope for hyper sonic vehicle built. and when we built it for the previous rover and tested it, it ripped apart so you don't want

it to happen on the planet. so ames does the testing and sure in our large wind tunnels. the second thing like when a meteor comes through the atmosphere you can see it burn up. we don't want our spacecraft to burn up so. ames developed materials that dissipate the heat. like one side in the oven and the other on your hand. you can enter an atmosphere. >> and this huge implications because mars is where we want our second home. >> yes. absolutely. we have to know how to enter mars and the same material that is on this spacecraft as the entry part will also be on human missions that go to mars. >> reporter: thank you so much, michael. president obama has set this goal for getting a human on a mission to mars within 20 years or so. people saying this is huge for getting us there. live at nasa ames, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> right now we're headed over

biggest success stories of this olympics. a lot of hype. we spent time with her this week. the video, classic after her competition, after one of her three gold medals when she is hugging her family and so thrilled, all the hype can be put aside. these are the true molden moments for dana. three gold medals and two world records for this cal grad who still lives in the east bay and yes, she joined us a few minutes ago. >> when i kind of think about the team that we had and my own expectations of my performances, it was what i wanted to do, but then when you're there and you're competing and then you have a gold medal around your neck, even to get one is such a crazy experience and to think about now that i have three, i don't think it sunk in. >> you have one -- you've got all three of them here. >> why not. >> i need focus here. you have three medals. can you hold them up, tell us what the plan is?

means the extreme east bay is going to get downright toasty. temperatures soaring into the triple digits. i'm going 98 degrees as of this wednesday in places like livermore so. make sure you're ready. if you work outdoors you want to make sure you have lots of water ready to go, seek trade, try to park in the shade if you can. your car will get 20 to 30 degrees warmer than the surrounding air. thursday, 99 degrees. when you talk about some of the extremes, gilroy, morgan hill, we're talking triple digits, possibly breaching the 100-degree mark through friday, staying hot saturday and sunday so. yeah, it's going to be hot around here and these conditions will last. overnight lows are not going to recover, that means you'll probably need to run the ac. not just in your vehicle but at your home as well. let's check on that ride. >> we have a very serious accident now brewing. more details. sounds like major injuries to one of the people involved.

northbound 238 onto northbound 880 t connector is basically closed and folks are jammed up. look how slow it is off 580 past redwood road. westbound 580 is a good alternate taking you out to 98, you cut over to 880, heading to the bay bridge or downtown oakland. you want to get off and head south on 88 o redwood road around that. likely going to get flooded because of all of the folks coming off and heading through surface streets. we'll watch this, sending a crew there as well. we talked about 880. the traffic flow still holding steady past the coliseum through downtown, again we're going to hold off on this backup because folks are on 238. across the bay, palo alto looks nice as well. northbound we're starting to see a heavier volume than we have in
