i'm savannah guthrie. we're going to get to all the olympic news including another big weekend for team usa and the host country as well in a few moments. >> we begin on monday morning with tragic news from back home, a temple shooting outside milwaukee, wisconsin. nbc's john yang in oak creek. john, good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, matt. we are learning much, much more about the addlleged gunman. law enforcement tells us his name is michael page, a 40-year-old military man, he was demoted in 1998 because of disciplinary action taken against him. and the southern poverty law center, a civil rights group that hates groups, says he was a member of a neo-nazi rock band called end apathy. for several years the sikh temple in wisconsin was the scene of intense drama after police received reports of gunfire. the first two police officers on

the scene came under fire themselves. one was badly wounded. he's expected to recover. and the other shot the gunman dead. >> we're treating this as a domestic terror-type incident. and therefore the fbi has the resources needed to help investigate that. >> reporter: at first police were uncertain if there were more gunmen. s.w.a.t. teams converged on the temple wearing tactical gear, carrying assault weapons and surrounding the building with armored vehicles. outside, they found the bodies of two victims. inside, at least four more. >> you can't register this. how do you register this? >> reporter: as the rampage began, temple leaders were in offices getting ready for the 11:30 service. several women were in the temple kitchen preparing food. one of them was singh's mother. >> he called us very quick and she whispered. she said "don't come. there's a shooting here." >> reporter: people hid in closets or texted for help. those inside included families with children as young as 4. >> there were two kids outside who came in, which was pretty

brave of them, and then announced to everybody that there was a shooting going on and to find a safe place to be. >> reporter: members of the local community of sikhs, a religion with roots in south asia, rushed to the scene looking for answers. >> the biggest question we have is, is this a hate crime? i mean, what did we do wrong? >> reporter: since 9/11, there have been incidents where sikhs have been mistakenly targeted by anti-muslim groups. law enforcement officials told nbc news the motive in this case is a mystery. the gunman had several tattoos including at least one referring to 9/11. late sunday, authorities searched apartments where he had lived for other clues as the local community came to grips with the shootings. >> we feel sad. we feel bad about what has happened. but as a matter of fact, being angry is one of the big sins in sikhism. >> reporter: leaders of national sikh groups say that the attack is the realization of their worst fears.

police in cities like chicago and new york say they have increased security around sikh temples to make sure this doesn't happen again in their cities. matt? >> thank you very much. one of the victims was the temple's president. his son is with us now. armadeep, good morning to you and my sincere condolences. >> thank you, matt. good morning to you. >> how's your family doing? how's your community doing? >> i mean, we're very shook up right now. it's hard to put into words all that's happened in the past something like 14, 16 hours. we're at a breaking point in some ways. >> i know you received a phone call fro alerted that this all was happening. can you tell me a little about that. >> when the phone rang my

brother was on the line telling me right now, somebody is opening fire and i saw my dad's cell phone on the other side and i knew he was at the temple already. he just went. just asked my wife which turban should i wear today, she picked the blue one. i saw his phone and got excited and picked it up. but it was the priest who usually stands next to him at the sermons. he's the president at the temple. the priest is always there giving the sermon. the priest picked up the phone and told me specifically, where are the ambulances? why aren't the ambulances here? i said where is my dad, the president? he said, he's at my feet. he's laying on the ground bleeding from his back and then i was shook at that point, like how bad is he bleeding, i asked. this is all in our native tongue, how bad is he bleeding? he was saying, so bad, it's unstoppable.

at that point, i had some glimmer of hope, he said, but he'll be okay, he'll be okay. and he -- he couldn't keep going after that. >> i know you went down to the temple. we have a shot of you. you began to pray outside. i want to mention your mother was inside that temple as well but luckily she was not harmed. i know, armardeep, one of the reasons you wanted to do this interview was because you think and know actually now, there are incredible misconceptions about sikes in this country and a lot of real lack of information. >> there is. there's a real cultural misunderstanding. i'm not going to go so far as to say people shouldn't confuse us with muslims. that's hard to say because it's culturally insensitive. but as of now, people have -- we as americans are a melting pot of so many cultures. we have to understand each

other's cultures, whether they be italian, polish, german, or they be far east chinese or, you know, bangladesh. we need to know the nuances because we live together, rub elbows next to each other. >> again, this is a tragedy not only for your family but for your community. armardeep kaleka, i appreciate your time this morning. my condolences on the loss of your father. >> thank you, matt. >> we want to turn and get a check of the day's other top stories. we go to natalie morales at the news desk. good morning to you. >> good morning. savannah, matt, good morning, everyone. an overnight nailbiter for nasa has ended in a victory as a rover the size of a car landed on mars. the $2.5 billion curiosity rover is the largest and most ambitious mars project to date. it was never fully tested on earth. the rover is now sending signals, even these pictures back to earth. it will begin exploring whether

or not there could ever have been life on the red planet. lots of celebrations at nasa. details of a near miss in the skies last year that could have been catastrophic have now been released. two jets at 22,000 feet hurdled directly toward each other on a collision course for a minute and neither pilot was aware at the time. this was according to the "wall street journal." the wings of the jets came within 2,000 feet of each other off the coast of new jersey. the incident involved a packed american airlines passenger plane and military cargo jet. a report from federal investigators blames a distracted controller. an onboard avoidance system alerted the american airlines crew to make a series of evasive maneuvers in a matter of seconds. one nascar fan is dead and nine others injured after multiple lightning strikes at the pocono raceway forcing the pennsylvania 400 to end early. some 85,000 fans were gathered for the race and the track warned them to clear the grounds before the storm arrived. israeli officials say a deadly attack on the gazan

border was a botched attempt to abduct an israeli soldier. masked gunmen killed 16 egyptian border guards in the raid. authorities blamed islamist militants. a charge hamas and gaza is denying. when a texas teen jumped the line to board a southwest flight he was humbled. he was traveling with his team when his coach caught him snagging a seat with youth performings getting priority boarding. max got him to own up to his naughtiness. take a look at what they did. >> i apologize. >> no. >> i hope you will all find it in your heart to forgive me, for i am just a young man, who thinks that i am smarter than i am. >> thank you. >> from the good natured laughter, seems they all forgave the sneaky teen. it is now 7:10.

a moment in history for michael phelps, the last race of his olympic career. phelps helped lead the u.s. men's team to a gold meteorologist saturday in the 4 x 100 medley relay. phelps, the most decorated athlete in olympic history finishing his career with 22 medals, 18 of them gold. >> couldn't ask to finish on a better note. >> missy, so good with that speed. >> missy franklin adding another gold medal to her young olympic career. the 17-year-old helped her team set a world record in the 4 x 100 meter medley relay. in women's gymnastic, mikayla maroney splipd lipped on her se fall.

maroney took silver. the home team is celebrating some huge victory, great britain with a rush of gold medals over the weekend. jessica ennis, the first british woman ever to win the decathlon in front of a packed stadium. in the crowd prince william and katherine, the duchess of cambridge. and in tennis, andy murray beat world champion roger federer in straight sets to avenge his loss to federer last month at wimbledon, bringing his fellow countrymen to their feet. meanwhile gabby douglas, the gymnastics individual all around champ will be back in action tonight on the women's uneven bars and china is now leading the overall medal count with 61, u.s. has 60 total, 28 gold, 14 silver, 18 bronze. great britain in third with 37 after a spectacular weekend for the home country. savannah.

anybody, let alone first time olympian. you did not crack under the pressure. you totally delivered. how did you keep your center and keep calm and keep swimming. >> my teammates and coaches were unbelievable. able to keep me calm and relaxed and excited, which is the most important part. the excitement level there, you're going to be having fun, enjoying yourself. after eight days of competition that can be hard. i have the most incredible team in the world and i wouldn't have been able to do it without them. >> the bronze in the relay first was in the 100 meter relay, which i was lucky enough to be there and see. michael phelps said of all his gold medals was the favorite. do you agree? >> i think it's impossible to choose. the first one was the most emotional. i saw a video of my parents in the stands and they were hugging and crying and that got to me. i started crying. i was trying to sing the anthem on the podium and crying. i was a total mess. it was the most incredible

feeling in the world. >> have you had a chance to watch back your races? is that something you want to do? >> i've had a few during interview. every time i watch it, i get goose bumps and my adrenaline starts going. >> you mentioned you are a regular high school girl. so regular that school starts in two weeks. >> yes. it starts extremely soon. i believe i have registration two days after i get home. >> what are regular high school things you're looking forward to doing. >> football games. i'm so excited for our football games. we have so much fun. we have a cheerleading team but for our games we have rowdiest, which is boys school, five or six guys that dress up in crazy outfits and get the crowd going. it's so much fun. i can't wait for those. >> you've worked hard swimming but staying a regular girl. you don't want to turn pro yet, a flood of sponsor ships. is that the plan? why is it important to you? >> it's definitely a fan but there's a talk in the future with my family and coach to

your third trip to the olympics, you've got gold around the neck. how does it feel? >> amazing. >> the best feeling ever. this is the biggest of our career. we won the slams but to have the gold medal means everything especially after bronze in beijing, which we're really proud of, in the front of the trophy case. >> in some ways do siblings have an advantage in doubles. is there an unspoken chemistry, communication. >> we're 34, we've been together 34 years and nine months, so we've played thousands of matches. can you attest to that. you move together. you have a feel for where your brother is going to be on the court. >> it was a crazy shot at the end of your match. >> yeah. >> how did you pull that off. >> match point. an overhand. probably any other court it would have gone over the fence. hit it and went back. >> you all have won so many

grand slam titles, venus certainly you have such a storied career. is there something special about doing it for usa, representing your country? >> absolutely. winning a gold medal only comes every four years. i think everyone lives and dies with these olympic moments, trials and failures we all remember and take to heart. it's just amazing u.s. team tennis got three medals, four medals we added to our medal count. that was maed amazing for us. >> when my sister and i were young we were winning the gold medal in aggravating our parents. you gs are a step ahead of us. congratulations. all right. americans gold medalists. all right. now it's time for al's english lesson. are you ready to participate in this? we decided to build on our knowledge some words. we're going with whole sentences. we want to be able to translate a whole sentence. this is british. i had a kit after my heaving day

i definitely have to do the best. >> i have to read something, somebody you ran with, who won the race. he said afterwards about you. he's very special to our sport. he's a great individual. it's time we see him like that and not anything else. does that kind of just sum up this whole road you've been on. >> he's such a phenomenal competitor. i really appreciate the gesture yesterday when he asked to take my name after the race. i think the 400 guys, we compete for three, four months on the circuit, so really form a friendship between some of the guys. if you look before a race it's very quiet. two hours before a race we hardly say any words to each other, it's very professional. as soon as we cross the line, it shows the gesture they make is what the olympic spirit is about. fair play and sportsmanship. he's a true gent off the track like many guys i run against. such a humbling experience being

out there. tonight when i can't watch these guys in the final, these are the guys i look up to for inspiration and try. there's so many gentlemen on and off the field of play. every athlete does something to inspire those around him and each other. so many athletes coming to london for the olympic games, it's been absolutely mind blowing. it's a goal i'd worked for five years. i narrowly missed beijing criteria. to be here and step on the track is a mind blowing experience. 70, 80,000 people, felt like 180,000. coming off the home straits and hearing the roar of the crowd and knowing so many people behind me made it more enjoyable and definitely one of the memories i'll cherish for the rest of my life. >> you gave a lot of people great memories.

handshake. >> reporter: gymnast jordyn wieber tweeted she met kate, all three loving every minute of the games. >> we've been energetic and enthusiastic about celebrating but it's been fantastic games. we've always wanted to get involved in it from the start. >> reporter: prince william was waving the flag for british athletes earlier this week. >> i've only got sadly three days to get to the olympics because i have to go back to work next week. the olympics going to the next level. seeing the olympic stadium packed was quite something. >> reporter: and what a week it was. the royals were in the stands as britons celebrated ennis as their new hero. with british runner's spectacular win on thursday. excitement is at an all-time high. well, i can tell you, i was in the stadium saturday night and my ears are still ringing. it was unbelievable.

good morning to you. it's 8:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. a man and a teenager shot on the streets of east san jose and the suspect is still on the loose. the victims were shot around 8:30 last night on south white road near james lake high school. both victims are expected to survive. officers say the shooting might be gang related. in the meantime, san francisco is set to launch a pilot program today that will pair shelter dogs with former homeless people. ten people will be paid $75 a week to care for the dogs if they agree to give up panhandling. let's check the morning commute with mike. better news for northbound 238, the accident completely cleared so just about 25 minutes. clearing has gone on for northbound 238. that's great. but 580 is still jammed out of

one of britain's greatest treasures. stella mccartney born into rock royalty, the daughter of paul and linda mccartney. she grew up under the white hot glare of the media spotlight that comes when dad is a beatle. stella mccartney forged her own path. she's married, a mother of four, and has created a multi-million dollar fashion house and brand all her own. stella's latest project, london 2012. >> have you been watching your athletes and your kids performing the olympic. >> yeah, i've been lucky enough to go to swimming. i've been watching on tele, the gymnastic men's bronze won, they looked like a team. i was so proud. >> this is what i worry about when i'm watching the gymnast, did i cut that in a way that's too tight in the crotch. they are not going to do as well as i could.

>> of course you worry about that. you've been working on this three years. you hope you've ticked all the boxes on fit issues by the time you come to the game. >> stella is no stranger to sports, she's designed for adid adidas. her style described as cheeky chic. animal rights activist and her lines contain no fur, no leather. some of the most photographed women in the world wear stella mccartney. >> some of the women who wear your clothes are style mavens, gwyneth paltrow, kate moss, madonna. did they influence you at all? >> i try not to separate my famous friends out from just my normal famous friends. i do sit around with my girlfriends. sometimes it comes up, that dress you did, i'd love it in the short sleeve. i've got that area i worry about is my waist. >> i want to talk to you about that later. >> we kind of talk about that sometimes. >> can you pinpoint the moment

when you thought, i'm going to end up in fashion somehow? >> i guess, you know, sort of five, six, seven, you know. i remember trying on my mum's glittery thigh high boots in her wardrobe. i remember being aware of my dad's suits. >> you were raised with a real work ethic, which surprises people. okay. stella mccartney. dad was a famous beatle, mom a photographer. that had to be a ivileged, entitled life. but your parents didn't raise you that way? >> no, i'm also -- i'm fairly self-motivated person. i understood that from an early age. i also was very aware it's not mine. i didn't have a right to that life they had made for themselves. i had to carve out my own way in life. >> i want to read you a quote. this goes back to when you were appointed creative director of the fashion house chloe. the man you replaced, you know this quote, carl lagger feld,

was really snarky. they should have taken a big name, not in music but fashion. obviously you have proved how talented you are. when starting out, did you ever feel having the name mccartney was more a negative than positive or a bit of both. >> ingal think always a bit of . it would be so wrong to pretend it hasn't done great things and opened doors for me and given me an interesting take and outlook on life. at the same time, yes, definitely people judge you before you come into a room. it used to drive my crazy that people knew about my parents. i knew nothing about -- i know nothing about your mom and dad. >> your dad, obviously part of opening ceremony. you were there. what did you think of the show? >> i loved it. you know, i really loved it. i think daddy did a great job. dad got 80,000 people rocking at the end. that's great. >> were you one of them?

>> yes. >> were you up there doing this? >> yeah, no, i was singing along. >> how did this become your favorite public. >> because it's very close to my work. >> i learned how much fun stella mccartney can be with a visit to one of her favorite pubs established in 1675. >> this is one of the pubs i guess you came to fairly -- pubs are part of everybody's life here. can you come in and have a pint and be left alone. >> i definitely can come to a public and have a pint of ale on occasion. it's more can i get out of kids bedtime and work. >> she's the real thing. >> stella, what's the greatest compliment has your dad given you. >> that he's proud of me. >> i heard him say that at one of your shows. it was sweet. he's very proud of you because of how hard you worked to get to this point. this was the real deal. >> you better be the real thing,

and she is. >> i have worked hard. i have a great group of people around me helping me and supporting me. i certainly couldn't have done any of it alone. >> i know you wanted to make britain proud? >> i did. i hope i made britain proud. i can only do my best. it is a big deal. so i hope i've made the nation proud. >> stella mccartney has fiercely guarded her children's privacy. there are no photos of her four kids. that is intentional on her part, at least public photos. she's keeping them out of the spotlight. she wanted all you you to have a gift from stella. these are stella's olympic nickers. >> the receiving of the nickers. >> matt had these on earlier but here. there they are. >> a little olympian and cab. >> that honors everything in 2012. the queen's jubilee.

here in olympic park, what a beautiful day. >> you split your time between london and dublin. >> we spend a lot of time in the air. for the 60,000 people in the air, we're part of that. >> talk to me about the title of the album. it's number three, your third album. is there more significance than the order. >> we recorded it in studio three, my birthday on the 3rd of october. >> if there was ever a time to call our third album number three it's now. >> the song you're going to play, one of the songs you're going to lay is called "hall of fame." when you look at the lyrics, it seems tailor made for the olympics. was that in the back of your mind. >> at the time it wasn't. there were a lot of olympic-themed events happening, a four mile run. a lot of women going. you see them running the four miles like in the olympics and it was for charity. it kind of really soaked in that you can do amazing things. you don't need to be an olympian
