family in london but sharing this medal with everyone back home in the bay area. >> balancing motherhood and this crazy career. how did it feel holding your boys? >> i think i scared them. that's what life is all about. family, and i feel so blessed. i have the support that i do, my husband sacrificed, my boys sacrificed so much. and it truly was a family journey. my boys have allowed me to find my true self. >> reporter: what a journey it has been from saratoga where her parents live to san jose and then to stanford and now on the i want national stage yet again in london. now here's the deal. a lot more changes are coming to kerri walsh's life. misty may-treanor, no secret, is retiring. that's it. she is done with competitive volleyball but two came by to our studio and said you know what, i'm retiring but hold on, i'm still going to be around.

morning. back to you. >> raj, sounds good. thank you very much. about two weeks in every night has been huge. a big night for team usa coming up in prime time coverage, track and field gold medal finals. women taking the water for the platform diving and the men's beach volleyball also a gold medal final. our prime time coverage starts up at 8:00 here on nbc bay area. >> 6:04. new this morning five brentwood high school football players suspended for hazing. four seniors and one sophomore at liberty high are off the team and could face criminal charges. the hazing incident took place during a football camp in sacramento in june. police say the players used icy hots in a way not appropriate on three victims. >> a 13-year-old boy is the latest victim what if santa cruz police believe is gang violence.

this happened last night. the teen police say is a documented gang member, shot twice in the back and died on the sidewalk. witnesses claim the shots came from a van with three or four men inside. police right now looking for a white chrysler van with a plate 6 nw 634. >> a sky diving jump gone wrong. a man is recovering at a hospital. the man leapt from a plane and his parachute opened early, but he landed hard. members of the fire department found him semiconscious face down on the ground after the landing. his condition is still unclear. >> if you haven't heard the bay area under a spare the air alert. that's going on today. >> in some places that will mean triple-digit temperatures. meteorologist christina loren is here with a look at where the hottest spots will be. >> you know what else it means,

it looks like they got the car off. holding steady close to the limit. >> thank you. new this morning, the legal problems mounting for chevron. the black smoke from the fire monday sent nearly 1,000 to the hospital. christie smith is live with what's coming up next for the refinery. good rning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. when that black plume of smoke poured over the city people started showing up in hospitals right away, talking about eye irritation, throat irritation, breathing problems. at least 1,000 people have contacted chevron, others gone on and spoken with an attorney. we expect to learn where chevron plans to set up a physical office in richmond to handle some of these claims. also today, more about the investigation into the cause of the leak and massive fire on

monday at the refinery. at least five separate investigations will look into this. some repairs could start to happen today or tomorrow but only after the site is declared totally safe. there was a small fire again yesterday. some say repairs once they start could take months. many consider chevron a problem, others point to the fact it's the largest employer or taxpayer or the city of richmond giving to organizations. the mayor says that all can come at a price. >> we're dealing with a lot of injustice having this refinery in our city and the benefits certainly don't outweigh the problems that they brought us. >> reporter: chevron set up a 24-hour hot line, they are going to compensate people who have incurred medical or property-related expenses.

i'll let you know when we're going to cool off and looking to better quality 18 few moments. back to you. >> time is 6:12. time for a check on the top stories. >> let's check in with marla tellez live in our newsroom with more. >> good morning. chevron may have a clearer picture of its legal problems after the fire that sent hundreds to the hospital. the oil giant is opening an office in richmond for people to file claims. more than 1,000 people have contacted chevron, another 1,000 have lawyered up. the cause of that fire is under investigation. >> in san jose a tracy man is recovering in the hospital this morning after his sky diving jump ends badly on the monterey peninsula. his parachute opened early and he landed hard. his condition is still unclear. and the battle over san francisco's controversial cell phone safety law heads to the 9th circuit court of appeals. the city attorney's office will defend the ordinance that requires san francisco retailers

to post radiation warnings about cell phones. the industry sued the city, arguments at 9:00 this morning. >> we know recycling is big in the bay area but this morning it's about to get a whole lot larger. what is believed to be the largest recycling operation in the world is opening its doors in milpitas. bob a dell is live with a look at what makes it so different. >> reporter: good morning. republic services says there is no other place on the planet that handles as much waste as the recycling facility here in milpitas. their recovery island facility handles all of san jose. we're talking about 1,000 tons a day that they process. if you want to break it down by hour when up and running 110 tons an hour, most commercial waste. not long ago we recycled about 50% of trash. the goal is to recycle 80% of

materials including you can see they have bundles of plastic, sending just 20% to the landfill. where are we in closer to zero waste as opposed to 10, 20 years ago? >> i think we made significant progress from even five years ago. we need to continue to push the envelope of sustainability, reduction, reuse and recycling. >> reporter: you want to know why companies like republic services are able to stay in business, this is what we found. according to research the state got 37 million people dumping 30 million tons of garbage a day. that's around 4.5 pounds per person. plastic bags, 123,000 tons a year. >> how's this for an idea. y reserving a parking spot. that's the plan in san

stadium. >> reporter: the olympics are captivating to millions around the world for many reasons. among the biggest is really just the spirit of the games. in that stadium behind me there were 80,000 people with the standing ovation for one athlete. it wasn't michael phelps or usain bolt or any one like that. it was somebody you possibly haven't heard of. it was very moving. this is sarah atar, she finished dead last in the 800 meter qualifying heats, a half minute slower than the rest of the field. but it did not matter. she got a standing ovation from the crowd. she was born in the san diego area is representing saudi arabia. he is a and her teammate the first ever female olympians in saudi history. her body almost entirely covered and wearing that white. it's a great symbol of the game. >> it's such an honor to be here and an incredible experience running in this kind of

environment. to have so many people supporting me is a huge honor. i can't believe i'm here, really. >> reporter: it was a huge honor. i think it was bigger for the fans to watch her even though she did not qualify for the finals. she is a dual citizen, her mother is american, her father is a saudi national so she was able to compete in the games for saudi arabia. she is a student at pepperdine university in southern california. for the other end, getting cheers and standing ovation, this time because of a gold medal, talking about kerri walsh-jennings. an amazing accomplishment on the sand in beach volleyball and she did it again and again and again. for the third time in her career, she's won olympic gold in beach volleyball along with her teammate misty may-treanor. they did it last night in a touching scene after the match after they won in straight sets, kerri walsh holding her two

help komen refocus on fundraising strategy and growth. >> i've done this work for 32 years ever since i made the promise to susan komen. >> that was nancy brinker earlier this year responding to intense public backlash after komen's decision to no longer fund mammograms at planned parenthood. in a surprising move last night brinker announced she is relinquishing her title of the organization she founded 30 years ago. brinker will take on a new role as chair of the komen board executive committee. also stepping down the president of komen, elizabeth thompson. she will leave at four years with the organization. senior leaders have faced emorm normous opposition after plans to cut off funding for some projects. in a statement early this morning brinker says, quote, our mission is clear, consistent and

will never change, regardless of the controversy earlier this year. we are doing everything in our power to ensure that women have access to quality cancer care and the support that they need as we seek answers through cutting edge research. it's also important to neat executive board members announced their resignations for a total of four changes in leadership. brinker will remain ceo, then she will settle into the new roll. >> another health news breakthrough that could explain why marin county has some of the highest breast cancer rates. a study suggests that it's genetic and there are relationship to vitamin d, they have samples from women with breast cancer. the study sample is small and more research needs to be done.

>> a suspect last november has been ordered to stand trial. isaac mcdaniel is charged with assault and being accessory in the beating and shooting december of foster. this happened near the occupy camp outside of city hall. mcdaniels admitted he attacked foster and gave his gun to the man who shot foster. >> today, bay area leaders will again join the sikh community to encourage unity and toll ran, after six people killed in a wisconsin temple. the largest gather was in san jose for where people spoke about solidarity and standing up against violence, hate and bigotry. >> it could have been auen our

community. >> tonight mike honda and dave korteze will meet with leaders from the sikh community. it's in san jose. >> some call it one of the ultimate thrill, each year roughly a half million americans sky dive for the first time. the question is how safe is that sport? a breakdown of the safety standards and who is regulating sky diving. >> we found in general sky diving is a self regulating sport. sky divers follow a basic set of requirements by the u.s. parachute. drop zones don't have to report accidents to the faa. >> are you excited to go? >> i'm real excited. >> you may remember her jump. it went viral a year after she

>> welcome back. 6:41. reporters are stepping up saying they want more information about colorado shooting suspect james holmes. today media attorneys including one for nbc will be in court asking for a gag order to be lifted. holmes will be back in court for the hearing. he is charged with opening fire 18 crowded colorado movie theater last month. 12 people were killed, 58 injured. lawyers planning to argue the public has a right to know more about that investigation and the events that led up to the killing. >> in an effort to move past a

olympic caldron as it burns for the 13th day of the summer games. bay area athletes have been showing the good show including kerri walsh. >> there has been magic to see. we take it over to "today in the bay's" raj mathai joining us live again from london. you were among the thousands in person watching kerri walsh and misty may-treanor bringing home gold becoming olympic royalty. they are rock stars out there. >> reporter: it's pretty wild. rock stars here, back in the united states, it was wild. you know what, kerri walsh is looking for a partner because misty may treenler is retiring. this is not a surprise. this was expected so she wants to advance and go to the 2016 rio games looking for a partner. they came by and chatted. misty may-treanor is retiring but is still going to be around. they had a lot of giggles. >> everybody is like you're retiring. she's not going to get rid of

christie smith is live in richmond where the legal problems are just beginning for that oil giant. good morning. >> good morning to you. already at least 1,000 people have contacted chevron directly, telling them about problems like the breathing problems, eye irritation, they say that it's all tied to the fars that happened on monday. later today chevron is expected to open up an office in richmond to try and deal with all of these claims, deal with them in person. the other big question after the fire, why did it happen, the leak, at least five separate investigations are expected once the site is deemed safe. for the repairs chevron has not released damages. it's unclear when the damaged crude oil processing unit will come back on line. some say it could take months of
