u.s. medal, the 17-year-old high school student beat russia. back on the track, an incredible moment for american runner manteo mitchell, he broke his leg during the opening lap of the 4 x 400 preliminary. you can see him limping at the finish. he thought it was just a cramp. later doctors said he had broken his left fibula. that's a guy you want on your team. while mitchell's team ended up qualifying for tonight's final. the u.s. women's basketball team will also go for gold. they knocked off australia to advance to tomorrow's gold medal game against france. u.s. men play in the semifinals later today. checking the medal count, the u.s. leads now with 90 in all, 39 gold, 25 silver, 26 bronze. china has a total of 80 and russia in third with 56. matt. >> natalie, thank you very much. as you mentioned, the u.s. women's soccer team beat their archrivals japan last night, now threepeaters as gold medalists in the olympic games

and here they are. ladies, congratulations. how do you feel? >> thank you! >> ho hum? three in a row? what does it matter? talk about the atmosphere last night. 80,000 people in the stands, a lot of supporters for japan. when i was watching, seemed like an awful lot of american flags. somebody tell me about the atmosphere. go ahead. >> it was so electric. to have 80,000 people and feel like every one of them is down on top of you. there was a lot of japanese fans but plenty of usa chants going around. >> it was a little tense at the end there. can i say that? as i was sitting in a bar watching this. you guys were up 2-1 for seems like an eternity. how tense was it on the field? >> i was counting down the minutes from 70 on. it was good. it was exciting. >> a little hand for carli, because carli scored. matt, thanks. the u.s. can now lay claim to the two greatest athletes in the world after ashton eaton won gold in the grueling decathlon and his teammate trey hardee took the silver. the first one/two by americans in that event in 56 years. they are with us, ashton and trey, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> we know you're the greatest athletes in the world. are you the tiredest? >> i think it's fair to say for both of us. the most sleep deprived for sure. >> people don't understand, this is ten events over two days. you get almost no sleep or food. >> you try to manage as best you can. you really are focused on competitions. sometimes there's things you have to do where you don't have access to those things where you would like to. >> what kind of athlete is drawn to a decathlon. >> a crazy one. >> yeah. >> a little bit of crazy, a little competitive. >> lot a bit of competitive. >> there was a moment ashton, after the pole vault, the eighth of the ten events where the look on your face seemed to say it all. did you know at that moment, i

got this locked up? >> i mean, the pole vault is kind of a barometer. at that point i was just -- i was hoping everything went right in the last two events. i know trey is still a really good competitor. i was hopeful. >> trey, you have won world titles before. people probably don't know about ten months ago you had reconstructive surgery on your elbow. here you were throwing that javelin, doing so great. just to have that journey, does that make that silver all the sweeter? >> absolutely. i said it a few times before, the world title aside. this medal means more than any of those because of the journey and ten months ago i was waking up from the operating room and not feeling my hand, couldn't move my fingers or anything. this was a big question mark here. it was a long journey. i don't think i've ever been happier than after that second throw. >> all of you have had a wonderful journey. a moment ashton where you hugged your mom after the event. what did you say to each other? >> i just said mom, olympic

gold, anything i've ever wanted. she wasn't saying much but she was crying. she knew how hard i worked to get there. >> you are the two greatest athletes in the world officially now. thank you so much. congratulations. you get your medals tonight. now a check of today's top stories. over to natalie morales. >> thank you very much. and good morning once again, everyone. in the news this morning, a uniformed afghan has killed three u.s. soldiers in helmand province. officials say all three were members of special sources. so far this week, seven u.s. troops have been killed in afghanistan. the campaign trail heating up as republican presidential hopeful mitt romney kicks off a four-day bus tour in virginia tomorrow. this as a new ad from president obama questions romney's history of paying income taxes. meantime romney could be just days away from announcing his running mate. you can catch potential running mate tim pawlenty on "meet the press" this sunday at 9:00 a.m. eastern time nationwide. attorney for colorado

shooting suspect james holmes says he suffers from mental illness, in a move legal analysts say could lay a groundwork for a not could lay a groundwork for not guilty plea by reason of insanity. this is holmes former school, university of colorado, hired an attorney for the psychiatrist that treated him. financial firm goldman sachs won't face criminal charges following accusations it contributed to the 2008 financial meltdown. the justice department said the burden of proof could not be met, that goldman sachs bet against the subprime mortgage securities it sold to its clients. now to a near death plane crash caught on tape by the survivor. nbc's tom llamas in new york with more on this story. tom, good day. >> good morning. the video has gone viral on the internet. the dramatic footage captured by not one but two cameras and proves how close the survivors came to death. it was all smiles for nathan williams and three of his buddies as they took off from a dirt runway in stanley, idaho. the group had been hiking in a

remote wilderness area back in june. williams and a friend both turned on their cameras with no inkling of the harrowing experience they were about to record. williams said warming temperatures made it difficult to get enough lift. their small plane started to lose altitude. after only three minutes, they crashed, slamming into trees. >> everybody okay? >> the pilot's son was one of the passengers. >> on the ground, upside down hanging from our seat belts. >> reporter: at first it wasn't clear if everyone survived in the twisted wreckage. stunned the men got out of the plane, the pilot seriously hurt with a broken jaw, fractured cheekbone and broken ribs. the men say it's a miracle nobody was killed. >> we certainly feel like we were watched over that day. >> reporter: part of this video is too graphic to show on tv but the cameras continued to roll after the survivors attended to the pilot and waited for help. weeks after their ordeal the men

agreed to post the video for friends to see, never guessing it would go viral on youtube and liveleak.com where this plane crash has now been played more than 10 million times. >> the first time you see it, it's kind of surreal, full speed, seven seconds. not very much time. probably watched it a couple hundred times. it's surreal i was actually one of the people in the plane. >> reporter: amazing video. the son of the pilot said his dad is credited with getting the plane down without any loss of life and his father is expected to make a full recovery. natalie. >> all right. tom llamas in new york, thank you. now to another story of a man who is very lucky to be alive. amazing rescue on tape off the coast of australia. after his boat capsized the fisherman was left stranded and naked in shark infested waters. he struggled to stay afloat as a massive hammer head came close, begging for a tv boat to rescue him.

finally they pulled him to safety as sharks moved in. it's believed he was in the water treading for 24 hours. one other fisherman was pulled from the water and died in the hospital. a third man meanwhile is still missing. incredible story there. it is 7:16. you're up to date now. let's go back over to matt, savannah and al and all of our athletes. >> that's right. thank you very much. mr. roker, we are ending with a bang weather wise. >> this is not bad. all ght. let's see what we've got. we're going to be seeing a bit of a bang as far as our weather in the northeast, the mid-atlantic states. thunderstorms, heavy rain, could even be isolated tornadoes from upstate new york all the way down to charleston. you look on the radar, already see we're getting storms firing up from charlotte all the way up into new york, boston, back into cincinnati. rainfall amounts, some of them pretty heavy amounts. we're talking some areas back through michigan and wisconsin, on into pennsylvania. three to five inches of rain all the way down as far south as atlanta. that's what going on around the country, here is what's

>> seb is fine by the way. >> it was seb who against the odds helped british win the games in london. he is also credited with persuading the queen to take part of that memorable james bond stunt in the opening ceremony. it was seb coe who oversaw the planning to bring the games to life. >> sounds exhausting. >> i've been doing it ten years. my eldest daughter was 3, now 13. my older daughter was primary years and now university. it's been a large part of my life. >> the motto is inspire a generation. do you believe this has been accomplished with these games? >> so far i think it has, over the last seven years, 1.5 million more people are now involved in sports than they

were before we bid. >> sebastian coe was once an olympian himself, won two medals and broke records as a middle distance runner in 1980 and 1984. >> i always will consider the primary client group to be the athletes. >> do you think these ideas, the ideas of the olympic spirit and the commercial realities are in balance? >> i think they are in balance. but you're right to ask the question. there is a balance. you know, the old adage, he who pays the piper calls the tune is okay, we want to make sure they are not rewriting the symphony. >> surprisingly coe says if he could have predicted the world collapse he would have invested more in the games. >> we would have doubled our efforts. the fact 6 billion pounds worth of construction project money has gone into businesses often supporting communities that would have had precious little work during this period. this has been an economic

dividend that's bordered on a god send. >> throughout this interview you've sighed, i think mostly from exhaustion. what has made this most worth it to you? >> it's the generosity of spirit in this country. most mornings, we're all buried behind our newspapers, now we're talking to epa other. now we're exchanging stories about what it is we've seen and witnessed. we've just become nicer in the last few days. >> he also sees big life lessons in the game. >> the great thing about sports and the great thing about the olympic movement of olympic sport is it's actually a metaphor for life. it's not about patronage, charms, not about circumstance, it's about hard work. it's about diligence. it's about great coaching. it's about friendship and respect. >> diligence is something coe knows all too well. his work almost done with these olympic games, he next hosts the paralympic games. >> then you're going on

>> this feels good? betsey, talk to me about the game? >> it was huge. you know, this tournament we just wanted to come in and play our game and we saw spain in the preliminary rounds and then to see them again in the final was special. we lost to them in march of this year, tied them in this tournament and then, you know, to beat them in the finals was really special. >> how many olympic veterans do we have in this group? raise your hands. quite a few. >> maggie steffens, did you act like a veteran, five of the eight points. what was coming across you, how were you able to pull this off? >> i think having my teammates by my side there's no better team than the one we have here. we talk about how much we're a family, we're not just video individuals, not just teammates we're sisters. so to go in the final game having the girls by my side, it gives each ear the energy we have to pull out a gold.

this morning on today's olympic moment, the runner who just wouldn't give up no matter what. when american sprinter manteo mitchell lined up in the starting blocks for the 4 x 400 relay preliminary, he had no idea the challenge he was about to face. >> there's the gun with manteo mitchell running the leadoff. >> as he sprinted around the track, he began dropping back in the pack. what was going on? >> mitchell actually has some work to do. he can't let this field get away from him. >> he kept going, passing the relay off to another on team usa and limped off. what happened? he broke his leg halfway through the race. he said he kept going because he couldn't let his teammates down. three words kept him running
