air, it is the spare the air day. a big weekend around the town, as jessica said, outside lands is going on, a 49ers's game, this is all happening statement. >> it will all be happening at the same time. you need a lot of water, jeff, you kind of need a play book to plan the week, with everything that is happening. >> yes, you do, the numbers are relentless, with the past 24 hours, we'll see heat as we head into saturday, sunday. some of the hotter weather right now, gilroy, 104, livermore, 101, a record setter, hot pressure setting over head. and the thing to note today, the cooling onshore breeze is starting to push into the north bay quicker. you can see the jump in temperature is faster, at 66 in nevada, at 91, notice in napa, a lot cooler than it was yesterday. so climate in full effect here.

overall, some of the hottest widespread weather in the east bay with plenty of upper 90s, from livermore, walnut creek, and it is the spare the air day today and tomorrow. if you suffer from allergies, breathing problems. it will be worse for you in the east bay. let's take you outside, live, here is a sign of changes, in san francisco, the fog is moving in sooner, and more aggressive than we had at this time yesterday. and it will be a gradual change in that weather pattern. come back to the weather boards. and what we'll talk about is when the cooler onshore flow returns, and when temperatures could drop some ten-15 degrees in the full forecast. >> okay, jeff, we'll see you soon. and california regulators for energy urging appeals across the state tonight as temperatures continue to soar. you're being asked to reduce energy use during peak hours. that means try to avoid using the dishwasher or the oven this

evening. and turn off utilities whenever you can. that will help to keep the state's hour grid up and running, and avoid the need for rolling outs. and the heat could hit everybody's wallet a little harder. the latest crop report out today, bad news for bay area shoppers. the drought hitting the nation's mid-section, causing big problems for farmers. according to the u.s. agriculture department, the forecast was lower than forecast a month ago. that means higher prices for grain, meet and produce. >> i think we're going to see a modest price increase across the board. because corn, and soybeans are a component in many different food products. >> now, there is an upside for california. in some areas, the bay area sheltered, related to the drought. coming up, at 5 and 6:00, our business and tech reporter scott budman will show you the key to saving a few dollars on popular

produce. and hundreds of people lining up outside chevron's help center tonight, but many are leaving disappointed. they opened a new claim center this morning, and has been very busy ever since. chevron says it will pay for people's medical costs, property damage and lost wages, resulting from monday's massive fire. they say after people provide documents they will reimburse them for out of pocket expenses. but many say it is not enough. they believe that chevron should compensate them for their pain and suffering, as well. >> i think it is wrong, we should be compensated. >> people shouldn't have to get in these lines, looking like they're in the welfare lines, you see what i'm saying? >> most waited to talk to an adjuster, they say once they get documents, the checks should be in the mail within 30 days. and it is thrilling, how dangerous is it? millions attracted to extreme

sports like sky diving? but who is acting as a safety net to make sure every jumper is good, and everybody is protected? more on the safety standards surrounding sky diving. and who is actually regulating it. >> jessica, it is a good question, according to the federal aviation administration, at least 2,000 have died in sky diving incidents. the administration says there is very little regulation. and people within the sport we spoke to said it should be that way. >> 17, 18, 19. you're on this next boat. >> oh yeah, up to 13,000 feet. >> reporter: it is undeniable. >> so it is like a bucket list. >> again, i would do that again, right now. >> are you excited to go sky diving? >> i'm real excited.

>> this is you? >> yes, and that is the lady that jumped with me. >> reporter: that is what sky diving was for 80-year-old laverne everett. >> i was in more danger than i thought i was. >> reporter: you may remember her jump. it went viral one year after she almost fell out of her harness, mid-air. >> right after that, the phone started to ring. >> reporter: everett said the faa, which regulates the sport, only became aware and investigated the close calls after seeing her video like everyone else, on youtube. do you think there should be changes? >> evidently so. >> i think they couldñi do more >> reporter: one supervisor pushed the faa for tighter safety measures after 54-year-old man's parachute didn't deploy. his body was found 24 hours later in contra costa county, because he was not required to check in with anyone once he landed, nobody was looking for

him. two years after this accident, has anything changed? >> as far as i know, silence. >> i was one of the last people to see him alive. >> reporter: the sky diving teacher says policy did change after the man's death. jumpers must sign in. but it is not a federal requirement, nor are the drop zones where they are required to land, required to report accidents, even fatal ones with the faa. >> it is important to be self-regulated. i can't deny that. >> reporter: the faa was criticized for how they oversee the training and operation. we did request an interview with the faa. instead, a statement was released, saying in part, they have extensive regulations to help the sky divers, pilots and passengers and other aircrafts. they take the recommendations

very seriously. most accidents are reported to the united states parachute association, not to the faa. the executive director, ed scott, says almost all drop zones in the u.s. are members of the nonprofit. >> we're depending on the sky diver community or even the public at large to let us know if they see problems. and it does work. >> reporter: but when we asked to see statistics on nonfatal injuries at all u.s. drop zones, we were told it is confidential information. how many accidents have happened here? >> you know, honestly, i don't keep track, there are way too many. >> reporter: experts show that at least six people died, two of them ruled suicides. >> the faa is investigating the lodi parachute center. >> reporter: while according to the reports, in the '80s, there were at least 12 deaths at the drop site in lodi. the owner, bill doss, says the

employees belong to it, but the jumpers don't. >> i make sure the parachutes are correct, in date, they have earned the right equipment, and that is all you can do. >> reporter: laverne everett who jumped there says she understands the risks of sky diving, but will not take the plunge any time soon. >> i feel like i'm doing better just keeping my feet on the ground. >> reporter: since 2000, at least 80 accidents had appeared. they found no connection between his death and still are investigating the mid-air incidents in lodi. we'll keep you updated. and summer travel season still in full swing. so local areas are busy, coming up, crime statistics for local law enforcement, and a decade of data from the tsa. we uncover which crime happens most often at local airports.

team usa basketball, following in the foot steps of the dream team 20 years ago. they are going to play for the gold medal sunday against spain. the team advanced to the championship game by beating argentina, 109-83, the semifinal. they're now the defending champions. and finding a lot of medals? the hometown athletes will bring back lots of gold and bronze medals. now the count is at least 20 belonging to the local athletes. raj mathai has more. >> reporter: hello on this friday, we're inching to the closing ceremonies. so a lot of talk now is who will perform during the closing ceremony on sunday. a lot of names and rumors to the rolling stones to adele, to

elton john. and names we know, george michael, living in hampstead, a northern suburb of london. and yes, the spice girls, to reunite and perform right here at the local stadium. as for the athletes, the bay area has done so well in the last couple of weeks. in the pool and on the soccer field, we were joined by a bunch of gold medallists earlier. rachel buehler, first of all, congratulations for you, what a wild night you had. >> oh my gosh, yes, a wild night, playing in front of 80 thousand people. a gold medal match, a dream come true. unbelievable. >> well, you have done this before, won gold in beijing, now here in london. show us your gold medal, tell us what is going through your mind and why is this one different. >> you know, earning a gold medal is such an honor, to be able to represent your country at this level. it is something you dream about

as a kid. there is just a lot of pride, unity as a team. and it has been you know, really, why i think we have been able to do what we did. >> for what women's soccer does, what you guys did and did for the last few years, what does it do for the bay area, not only in the bay area, but across the country? >> i think it helps to inspire the little girls and gives them something toook forward to. and they're older, maybe they can play at our level, and again, playing professionally, that they can aspire to. it is great for them. >> reporter: and the biggest breakout, maggie steffens, right here. you have been killing it this entire week, how do you feel? >> i feel great, a great experience, i'm really trying to take it all in. it has not hit me yet that we're olympic champions. there is just so much excitement. and we're so happy as a team that we're just enjoying the

moment. >> reporter: do you know right now you could go back to danville and be mayor if you wanted to? >> i don't know, i don't know if i would want to be mayor, i want to be 19 again. >> reporter: you have had a lot of fame, not only because of your success, but your sister, jessica steffens, is it nice to be playing with your sister? how special is it? >> it is so surreal. you don't even realize it until you see each other in the water. and you know, she gave me a pass, and right afterwards, you know i looked into her eyes. we can just feel it. it is so amazing. we're even roommates. we have pictures of our family all over the wall. very great. >> reporter: speaking of your family, i have been chatting with your parents, they are loving it. i can't imagine it. i am a father myself, to have two of my kids, winning a gold medal and playing in the olympics. >> they are very proud, been with us all the way through, and been such great supporters and

to have them here, cheering us on, it has been great. >> reporter: okay, to wrap it up, you're 19 years old, it is across the bay next to stanford, your freshman year. what do you look forward to next in college? >> i am just looking forward to being a student again, being 19, i'm around girls i love, but they're getting married, and older, at different points in their life. i just want to be going back to school, i don't care, give me some homework. so i look forward to being a student and being young again. >> reporter: i'm going to be watching you, make sure you study. >> i will. >> reporter: and the gold medal, right back there in the bay area, maggie steffens, one of the stars of the game. >> that is awesome, congratulations to her, it will be a busy night, don't miss the track and field, gold medal. and the bmx gold medal finals, all starting at 8:00. stay tuned for right after the games. and then coming up on

sunday, one of cal's golden girls, natalie coughlin will be represented. all right, let's talk to jeff who is working over time today because of the heat. >> yeah, we're all working overtime with all the olympics. but of course, we don't mind bringing you this show, in the south bay, leading the pack, gil roy, 101 in lafayette, and here is the thing that is different, the onshore flow is cooler, quicker, by the peninsula and also the south bay, 89 in sunnyvale, and 68 in san mateo. and oakland. so that is a sign of the onshore flow, and i will take you to san jose, blue skies, no marine layer, not too much in the way of haze.

you will find a lot of the thick, heavy haze where the air quality is worse. the fog in san francisco is rolling in right now, cooling down the forecast about five to eight degrees. back on the weather boards, you can see how extensive the fog and marine layer is, stretching all the way to santa cruz, even points more to the south, down to los angeles. tonight, i think the fog will be a lot more widespread in coverage here throughout the immediate coastline. and also clouds could be moving into the peninsula. so here is what it means for temperatures on your saturday. 60s, low 70s throughout the morning hours. mid-80s for the east bay, a mild day for you again in the morning hours. then by the afternoon, the thing to note is the peninsula will be cooler, also parts of the south bay, 77 in san mateo, 83 in palo alto, and we expect temperatures in the upper 90s, to 100 in the east bay. and london olympics looking great on sunday for the closing ceremony. i don't think it will stop any of the party.

wow, at the olympics in london winding down, we're gearing up to follow some of the olympic sports like sailing in the coming months. >> and as lauren scott shows us, even if you think you have seen sailing, well, you haven't seen anything yet. they make their way to the bay area in just days. >> reporter: the sport of sailing is enjoying something of a revolution, and being

televised. the ceo has taken note. >> one thing that we're seeing is people are finally learning that sailing is a sport, rather than a pasttime. and it seemed to be a past time for the rich, called yachting for a reason. but there is a tremendous move in sailing up and down. >> reporter: when steven barclay, the ceo of the america's cup authority recently unveiled all the racing events from now until 2013, we talked to him about the difference of the sailing between the olympics and the competition, centered around the cup. >> you can't compare it to what you're about to see in san francisco. that looks like what you will see in the bay on sunday. you know, a few boats going on are a blue background. so -- they can hear it. and our ambition is to enhance

attempted murder, and now an attempted escape. all of those accusations aimed at a bay area suspect who turned 18 today. nbc bay area has more on why investigators now believe a high-risk break-in attempt at a marin county detention center is linked to a young, high profile inmate. >> reporter: it was a scene out of a crime thriller. at 4:30 this morning, the suspects cut into a pair of chain link fences, inside the juvenile detention facility. inside the fence, they attacked the wall and window with a sledge hammer. >> the damage broke a very high security window. however, it was not to the extent that anybody could have made entry or left the building. >> reporter: although the attempt was unsuccessful, the suspects managed to slip away. >> currently, we're looking at a link between that break-in attempt and an inmate that was housed by himself, on the direct opposite side of that wall. >> reporter: that inmate was max

wade, wade is waiting trial on two counts of attempted murder, and the theft of a lamborghini belonging to the celebrity chef, guy ferrari, police say he was locked up, turning 18 today. he was supposed to be transferred to the adult jail. >> i don't have anything in that that would involve wade, however, he was turning 18. and it is really no secret you can't keep adults in that facility. >> reporter: wade's charges are like a movie. he repelled from the auto dealership to steal the lamborghini. when the police found it later, they also found the uniform. >> we have reason to believe he wanted to use the lamborghini to use the affections of the victim in the attempted murder. >> reporter: prosecutor's charged wade as an adult, today he was charged as an adult as

previously scheduled. wade is being held on 2 million bail, facing years in prison if convicted. nbc bay area news. and something really stinks in gilroy, and this time it is not the garlic, the garlic association festival says more than $18,000 in cash was taken from a ticket booth. the money was taken during the operating hours of the festival. and officials say the money was likely taken from somebody working the festival. now, the theft is not believed to be linked to other thefts in other ents. and finally catching up to pop culture, adding thirty new words you have been using for years. even homer simpson has his influence with his trademark don't -- did i say that right, mini me from austin powers made the list. been affleck are a famous bromance, and certainly

trailing him by seven points. with an off message, mitt romney has put up an ad about welfare and religion. he took an overseas trip that was marred by gaffes, conservatives are focusing on that. >> is this a 2008 style? where you sort of try to cave to the right? will it be a tougher, firmer tt romney? a big test will be the veep choice, they are pushing controversial conservative paul ryan for his larger vision that stresses tax reform and spending strength. and mitt romney echoed with who he may choose. >> i will not have that yet, but somebody certainly who has strength of vision. >> reporter: he is stressing cutting the deficit, he is to the right of romney, rich, if history is a guide, also makes him a likely running mate.

>> it is almost an ideologyical running mate. >> reporter: he is talking the president in an ad for the super pac. he blamed mitt romney for the death of a worker, years after he fired the worker and ended the health coverage. but that issue is sure to disappear the moment romney names his running mate. and sharing the wealth, people in santa clara county agreeing to share re-development money. the agreement ends a lawsuit. in june, the county seized the money the voters had ear-marked for the new stadium, saying it would be spent on schools instead. now, santa clara unified will get a cut to help the budget, and the rest will go to the new stadium. well, the games are in the home stretch in the london

olymp olympics. and many of the athletes are beginning to prepare for the closing ceremony. and much more at stake, more on the medallists, mark barger has more from london with the details, hi mark. >> reporter: good day, jessica and jenelle, the women's soccer team getting a lot of attention, coming up, could be more gold medals at stake for the u.s. women. as we mentioned, the soccer team still enjoying the golden moment. a victory lap today for the u.s. soccer women, on this, the day after the his-making third gold medal. >> just felt real and honest. and i can only hope to do this again one day. >> reporter: and if a third medal is swept, u.s. teenager clarissa beat somebody twice her age, for an olympic gold medal. >> i feel real happy about it.

stamina, the beauty of the game. i thought we would mix it up. talk about the fashion, seriously, it has changed through the few years. take a look at the jet set, from the french athletes. kind of looks like a pilot and flight attendant. hey, in 19620, hats were all the rage, sporting matching striped hats for the 1960s rome olympics. 1936, you have to admit the official uniforms for the athletes, from basketball, to yachting, boxing, this is the 1936 berlin olympic summer games. they were pretty cool. and yes, don't mess with that boxer on the right. look at his expression. and in 1924, the olympic summer games were held in paris. and these lovely ladies, the olympic gowns here at the race course, don't laugh. it was actually the style, but my, how far we've come. admittedly, this is my favorite.

this afternoon, and there it is, a lot of you that have the acs cranked up. you get a small bit in the east bay and south bay, later in the next 48 hours. the weather boards, the same exact weather pattern at least for the past five days. high pressure is not going anywhere, at least for the next 48 hours. but here is the thing, a slight movement of this to the east by sunday, monday, it will take a lot of this hot air with it. so sunday is the day we'll gradually see the pattern transition. that will be for the weekend. we'll have more of the same of what we had today. the coastline, 60s, 70s, both more substantial here as we head throughout saturday. and then through the imperial valley, i wanted to get rid of it. but just no way, we'll see temperatures in the 80s, low 90s, but by sunday with the cooling fog coming in, i really think you will like what happens on the seven-day forecast. so for saturday, going down a

little in the south bay, not a lot. mid-80s in el papalo alto. 100 for you here in walnut creek, also 101 in livermore, 97 in pleasantton, and 80s back by the bay. so if you're in the east bay, heading to the beach or somewhere in the peninsula, saturday, low 70s expected in san francisco. 72 pacifica, and 66 in half moon bay. and a day and a half of competition left. mostly sunny skies, sailing one of the last events with temperatures in the mid-70s. and looking at showers and thunderstorms, sunday, also showers for monday and tuesday. now sailing, this has been an event around since 1900, and great britain doing the best in the last olympics, the forecast sailing numbers, i told you what you would like to see, patricia
