>> thank you, wisconsin. it is good to be home. >> reporter: relishing his new role he blasted the president's record on the economy. >> the worst economic recovery in 70 years, the largest deficits and biggest government since world war ii. nearly one in six americans are in poverty today. it's the highest rate in a generation. you know what, we're not going to take that. >> less than 100 miles away in chicago, president obama weighed in on romney's running mate for the first time criticizing ryan's policies but praising the man. >> i want to congratulate -- no, no, no, no. i want to congratulate congressman ryan. i know him. i welcome him to the race. congressman ryan is a decent man. he's a family man. he's an articulate suppopokesmar

governor romney's vision but it's a vision i fundamentally disagree with. >> the shex, the architect of a polarizing funding plan, cuts to medicare, set a contrast to the two tickets. on "60 minutes" sunday night romney insisted his would be the final. >> this is a man who has dedicated the last 14 years working in washington in ways that are not highly partisan or political but indeed are focused on what he thinks the right course is for america. >> reporter: after their wisconsin rally they headed in different directions, romney flying here to florida, romney to iowa. earlier the two joked about how their busy campaign schedules could keep them apart for quite sometime. >> will we ever get a chance to campaign together? or did we experience --

>> will that ever happen again? >> ever see him until inauguration. >> reporter: they definitely have a good personal chemistry together as we've witnessed over the last two days but ryan and romney will likely mott be together again until a few weeks from now until the republican national convention. here in florida where there are a lot of seniors, a key issue going forward will be the future of medicare. already, matt, democrats are pouncing on this pick saying paul ryan's plans threaten the future of medicare while the republicans are saying the republican plan is the only way to save medicare. >> all right. peter alexander in st. augustine, florida. as always, peter, thank you very much. it's six minutes after the hour. here is savannah. >> a senior adviser to romney's campaign, kevin, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. thank you very much for having me. >> governor romney has been getting a lot of credit for making a bold, game changing choice here. it strikes me you don't make a choice like that if you think you are winning the campaign. is this a tacit acknowledgement

the strategy romney had before, just running against the obama economy, is not working? >> governor romney's campaign has always been about articulating a better vision for the country, a better way forward. so i think this is a pick that's a governing pick. this is a pick that shows how governor romney would tackle some of the big challenges we have here in the economy. we've got 23 million people who are struggling to find work. we've got unemployment that's over 8%. governor romney knows that in order to fix the economy, we're going to need some very bold pro growth economic strategies, economic policies. who better than congressman ryan to help compliment his vision for the future of america, somebody who has worked up on capitol hill on crafting those bold pro growth economic policies. this is very much a pick about how governor romney would vision as president -- how governor romney would govern as president

romney. >> a rarity in congress, this decision has delighted conservatives and liberals, for one reason, the ryan budget. let me put it to you plainly. would president romney, if he were elected, sign the ryan budget as is if it came across his desk? >> yeah, governor romney during the primary was actually asked that question, and he said he would. it's a vision for the country as far as fiscal conservatism, pro growth policies that we need to put our country back on track. so i think that what we have to remember, though, is now that there's a particular, the romney/ryan ticket, they very much have shared values, shared vision, shared principles on how we put the economy back on track and get those 23 million americans struggling to find work in this obama era economy of high spending, high deficits, high unemployment. this is going to be a campaign that really does talk about the future of the american economy and how a governor -- how a

president romney and a vice president ryan would do that. >> the hallmark of romney's argument to be president is he's a washington outsider who has primarily private sector expertise. in congressman ryan you have somebody who has spend his entire life in washington and has zero private sector experience. how do you square that? >> i think they have very complimentary skills and very complimently resumes. governor romney as you did point out spent a lot of time in the private sector. he knows how jobs come and go. also his experience as running the olympics, his executive experience running the olympics and executive experience being the governor. i think one of the things congressman ryan brings to the ticket, not only does he know how washington works, he also knows how washington doesn't work. we've seen a lot of partisanship on capitol hill. we've seen a lot of people for years who put together budgets that spent too much, economic policies that taxed too much.

governor ryan has experience knowing the way to fix the way washington works. right now washington is not doing what it needs to do in order to put the economy back on track in creating jobs. has he an understanding of how governor romney's vision for pro growth policies that will put the country back, how we can do that. >> all right. we have to leave it there. thank you for your time this morning. >> great to be with you. thank you. >> it is 7:10. once again, here is matt. >> stephanie cutter, president obama's deputy campaign manager. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> president obama said this of paul ryan, he was absolutely sincere about wanting to reduce the budget. he called ryan's plan a legitimate proposal and added he gave him credit for at least being willing to put out there some very tough choices. does he still feel that way? >> the president said it last night. he knows paul ryan. he thinks paul ryan is a good and decent man. he definitely has serious ideas, the president just fundamentally

disagrees with him. this pick, i heard the opening talking about how this pick was a courageous and bold pick. it's not courageous to put a republican budget on the table that doesn't ask for shared sacrifice. it's not courageous to put a republican budget on the table that balances the budget on the backs of the middle class and doesn't ask anything of the very wealthy. being courageous means you have to buck your own party and paul ryan hasn't done that. >> president obama addressed paul ryan in 2010 and said this, quote, we're not going to be able to do anything about these entitlements if what we do characterize whatever proposalings out there as well, that's the other party being irresponsible, trying to hurt senior citizens, which sounds exactly like what you just said. >> no, matt, i disagree. it doesn't sound like what i just said. the facts are about mr. ryan's budget is that it really does balance the budgets on the backs of the middle class and needy. that's not a pro growth policy.

adopt take it from me. take it from independent economists who studied this budget and said if we enacted the drastic cuts paul ryan wants to put in place and mitt romney wants to put in place, because this is his budget, too, it could contract the economy, up to a million jobs we could lose. don't take it from me, take it from independent economists, this is not pro growth. >> wisconsin hasn't voted for a republican nominee since 1984. paul ryan is a seven-term congressman for that state. every time he ran he won with i think a majority of over 60%. do you worry that he brings wisconsin in play and brings in other rust belt states. >> i think we have to see how this plays out. we feel pretty confident on our standing in wisconsin. i think not just because of the president's popularity but because of what the president believes in. i think the people of wisconsin they do want to do something about medicare to ensure it's there for them and their children but they don't wan to put policies in place that will

before, looking straight down into the jaws of the shark as it shoots up at the target. in order to get the shot they built a rig with helium balloon. attached to the rig a camera, straight down to the decoy directly under the balloon. casa grande is no stranger to bringing us captivating images of sharks in their natural habitat. last year he captured these underwater images using a special camera with protective housing. >> being able to film great white sharks under water with a phantom to me was a dream come true. to see great white sharks come up to that ton ark, jaws descending, you can see the gills rippling and bits of tuna coming through the gils. no one has seen that. >> another feat.

in 2012, he set to get a shot inside the mouth. >> to build these bite cams and see things no one has seen before, to me that's amazing. >> off the coast of south africa, he and his team are on edge battling rough weather conditions to get that wha they call the holy grail of shots, a great breach from above. >> come on, shark. >> their efforts paid off and now this new footage will give scientists and wildlife experts valuable new insight into great white sharks and a clear understanding of how they attack. wildlife photographer andy casagrande. good morning. i can't get over the fact you're smiling just watching the footage. how long did it take to get those pictures? >> sometimes it takes days, weeks. it's never easy.

to get that particular balloon shot from the helium balloon and the breech. weeks. >> i was told the balloon almost dunked the camera in the saltwater, which would have been a bad thing. >> on day one we thought we were going to lose the camera. for some reason, i don't know if it was the pressure or temperature in the air, the camera and balloon started to fall toward the ocean. luckily we stopped it because it was slap in the face on day one. >> the camera cost what? >> $300,000. >> going to come out of somebody's pocket. when you look at the video here in the studio, does it make the frustration worthwhile? >> definitely. as a wildlife camera, you have to struggle every day to get amazing things people haven't seen before. it was definitely worth it. >> a lot of guys get in a cage, get in the water, great whites come up. you are known as somebody who likes to get out of the cage and

get pictures of things even closer. are you married? >> i am married. >> how does your wife feel about that? >> my wife is my safety diver so she dives with me. >> what's the reason to get out of the cage. what can you get you can't get from the safety of the cage. >> the sharks only have three ways to go, left, right, or down. you get the same shots that are boring. the american public and international public want to see new and innovative stuff. when you get out of the cage you get new angles. >> when you're in the water with the sharks us into a zen-like state. how does it help you? >> you have to get zenned out. if you act like prey they will treat you like prey. if you freak out and swim away. >> no matter how close. >> i have a big camera. they mouth it or bite it. it's like eating spaghetti and power down on your fork. you don't go through it you let it go. >> tell me about the time

splicer. >> it allows you to essentially freeze time. they used it with the matrix with keanu reeves. >> are you going to try again. >> i hope to take it in the water outside the cage. >> mentioned the setup given with these images giving researchers new information. what do you hope people learn? >> one of the perspectives from the balloon breech. you see the snout as it breaks water. that's our first indication of the shark on the hunt. you can see through the water under the chin with the seal decoy. that can give the seal that last split second decision or trigger to get out of the way. >> i think it's nice when you say seal decoy. that's better news for a lot of people watching. andy, thanks very much. that's fabulous stuff. >> you got it.

did you like it? did you think, i don't know if i'm going to be able to do this? >> it was hard. i think because it was so fun, i didn't really care. it was so fun, i didn't care how hard it was. >> mom, how did you feel about him wanting to do this, actually getting it? >> i was excited. very wowed that nike picked nathan. >> this campaign is all about finding greatness. the people at nike are hoping the people would watch the olympics, be inspired by the athletes and their stories and go out and try to find their own greatness. did you like the message and were you inspired by it? >> i did. i did. i think all the supportive so -- so great. >> when you finally saw, this nathan and monica playing in the olympics, what was -- think of the audience. what was that experience like? >> just kind of like oh my gosh.

i just couldn't believe it. still to this day, this minute, it still hasn't completely set in yet. >> mom, i understand out a little emotional when you saw it? >> yes, i did. something else to see your own son on tv during the olympics. >> at any point did you worry about an embarrassment factor here, that some people, not everyone is nice -- >> right. >> some people might chime in monica or nathan, wow, that little kid is really overweight and he's only 12. did you worry about that? >> i didn't, because i didn't know it would be like that. but now i'm starting to learn even if somebody completely physically fit did that commercial, they would still get, as they say, haters. >> there have been supporters. people who say, wow, it's great. >> most of them are. >> but there have been other people who have been critical, some even thinking this is exploitation. >> yeah. >> right, mom? >> right. right. i was not even thinking about

that at the beginning. so we've learned a lot after something like this comes out, that there are people who will criticize him and i as -- >> how do you feel about that nathan? how do you feel about the fact there are people out there to do that? >> that just motivates me more. i just want to, you know, get off my feet and do extra time for those people that have enough time to be able to sit there and write mean comments on the internet when they could be doing something like i am. >> you've been inspired to get out and do a little more working out. donny, you're an ad man. >> bravo. it's discriminatory if you have a problem with it. we're coming off the olympics and see perfect sculpted bodies. in a strange way who looks like a guy, who like all of us are im perfect in one way or another is inspirational, motivational.

star danica mckellar who achieved fame winnie cooper on the popular show "the wonder years." these days she's an advocate for math education teaching girls they can not only be cute but smart and confident. her latest book "girls get curves, geometry takes shape." this isn't a passing fancy. why are you interested in this topic? >> i love math. i was a math major. there's a lot of stereotypes. a lot of women are discouraged about math before they give it a shot because of preconceived notions. we're not supposed to be good at math, cute, not smart. i was like, i'm going to do something about this. >> you are doing something about this. i hear you love pi, p-i. >> who doesn't live pie. that kind. i love numbers.

>> are you trying to recommend mize numbers in pi. >> my 2-year-old son loves me singing the digits to pi to sounds of the sugar fairy. >> 3.14. >> 15926 -- >> we could go on all day. >> we could go on and on but we won't. >> you bring up your little son, he's two now? >> he's two. >> how is motherhood. >> it's great. it is a challenge like many things but wonderful. i'm trial to instill the same things in him i'm telling readers in my book. it's about confidence, healthy self-image. it's hard to start super young but there are things parents can do now even to help their kids see math as part of every day life. the thing about math, it's a foreign language. if it's not translated properly it stays foreign and that's scary. especially for girls. they need to see math as part of being fabulous as part of what makes you cute and confident and sexy. it all goes hand in hand.

>> you do something kind of interesting here. you're introducing concepts of geometry but connect them with body image and self-confidence. how do you make that connection. it's not immediately obvious to everybody. >> here is the thing, doing things like math that exercises the problem solving part of your brain makes you feel smart. the kind of confidence you have from feeling smart changes the way you walk into a room, changes your smile, attitude, makes you witty, gives you something to talk about. logic is the center of geometry. geometry is the best kind of math to practice that kind of confidence building. >> i mentioned this is your fourth book. do you see progress? do you see girls embracing math in ways they weren't before. >> i get e-mails and tweets, i'm a twitter junkie. from all kinds of girls, all ages, even parents, especially girls saying you've changed my outlook on math. i'm no longer afraid of it, feeling like it's too much. i'm tackling it, feeling smart. it's incredible.

what we're fighting, up against is the world of reality television and billboards telling girls they are only supposed to be cute. it's only about being sexy. you know what, that's all fine and good but part of the bigger package. the most important stuff is that confidence you get from the inside. >> you gave us a body image quiz we put on our website. one says when you pass a mirror, avoid it, sneak a look, stow p to admire yourself. 70% said sneak a looking. you find yourself looking at models, what do you think, they are unrealistic, secretly wish you looked like them. what do you want girls to take away from a quiz like this. >> i want them to see first of all the feelings they have are normal but not obsess about their appearance. you don't want to obsess body issues, bad ones but you don't want to neglect your health. you want to do healthy things. filled with confidence boosting for math and body image.

chili's lunch break combos, starting at 6 bucks. good monday morning to you. 9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. federal investigators are going inside the chevron refinery in richmond today looking for the exact cause of last week's massive fire. investigators say they're foektsing foekts i focusing on reports of corrosion in pipes that the company inspected last year but did not replace. the refinery fire is pushing gas prices up across the state. it is the largest jump this year. san francisco has the highe ese price for gallon of unleaded. in san jose and oakland, prices are up about 25 cents from a week ago at $4.10 a gallon. one person is dead, another injured after a shooting about a block away from oakland elementary school.

oakland police say shots were fired sunday night near 18th street and lafayette. both victims were take on the highland hospital in separate scars. one adult male was dead on arrival, the other victim in stable condition. officers have not yet released descriptions of any possible suspects. we'll have a look at weather and traffic after this break.

these are all from your pantry. you want to stir this, katie. this is grated garlic. i'm a huge fan of grating garlic on a micro plane before the sauce. this is a tablespoon of the rub so it allows the flavors to play well with one another. we'll let this reduce, thicken up. then we'll throw our ribs on an indoor cast iron grill. this looking great, a nice char. we're going to slather these ribs with this homemade barbecue sauce. a lot of people are in the camp of either using a rub or a sauce. >> you like to do both. >> i like to do both. >> more is more. >> more is more. these are going to char beautifully, obtaining smoky flavors. >> if you had a wagner power painter. >> there's something therapeutic about brushing it on. >> head to the back.
