>> good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. we begin this morning with breaking news. an escape route for the notorious julian assange, the controversial wikileaks founder granted political asylum from ecuador after police raided the embassy in london. scott mcgrew joins us with the latest in the very interesting and developing story. >> good morning. british bobbies surrounded the ecuador embassy in london where julian assange is holed up. at issue is his extradition to sweden. he does not want to be extradited to sweden on sex charges because he fears american authorities will then arrest him in the process, and bring him to america to face charges that he gave away american military secrets. you are looking at a live picture now from london of british bobbies again surrounding the ecuadorian

embassy. the bbc is reporting that the british police have said they will arrest assange the minute he steps out of the embassy though ecuador has now promised him asylum. how they would get him to ecuador would not be clear. the british have even threatened to revoke ecuador's embassy status which would be a huge step and important politically around the globe. you remember that america gave asylum briefly to the blind chinese activist and it's sort of the same situation. were britain to enter the ecuadorian embassy or revoke their status, again, that would have reverbiations throughout the world but we'll continue to monitor this as ecuador grants asylum to julian assange, he is still holed up in the embassy. he has been since june.

>> scott, thank you. new this morning the taliban says insurgents killed 11 people on a helicopter. the military alliance releasing a statement saying at least three of those killed were american troops. the cause of this crash is being investigated. we will continue to gather information and bring you the latest. >> back in the bay area, it is decision day for san francisco's suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. in a few hours he will be back in front of the ethic commission for the last time. the commission is expected to make a recommendation on whether he should be permanently removed from office. bob redell live in san francisco. he joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. 9:00 the lawyer for ross mirkarimi and the city's attorney both sides expected to present their closing arguments to the city's ethics commission. then the ethics commission is expected to vote on whether to reinstate him as sheriff or

uphold his suspension and have him removed from office. whatever they decide is just a recommendation, it will be up to mirkarimi's former colleagues on the board to decide his fate. it would take a vote of yes from 9 out of the 11 to force him out. mayor ed lee suspended ross mirkarimi in march without pay after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment of his wife. on december 31, mirkarimi bruised his wife's arm during an argument, something he told the commission he terribly regrets doing. a neighbor videotaped the bruise and turned it over, leading to his arrest. on the steps of city hall there will be two rallies, one by a group in support of mirkarimi, one by a group in support of victims of domestic violence. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 6:03 now.

funeral services being held tomorrow for a san jose firefighter who ended up dying from a rare form of cancer. captain martinez was diagnosed back in june. his cancer attacked the soft tissue near the joints of the rm a,s neck and legs. two months later he passed away. martinez's fellow firefighters remembering him as a man always doing what he loved to do. >> the bad part of our job, but you know, you ask any firefighter it's our love, our drive, we give you 100%. >> so very sad. captain martinez leaves behind a wife, an 8-year-old son and twin baby daughters born just weeks before his death. funeral services will be held in his hometown of fresno. >> memorial services will also be held for a bay area sheriff who served the community nearly

half a century. contra costa sheriff ruke lost his battle with leukemia. he served back in 1965 before retiring a few years ago. he helped expand the force to 1,000 employees during his tenure. the private memorial will!re held in pleasant hill later this morning. >> today marks five months since morgan hill teenager sierra lamar disappeared on the way to school. researchers not giving up hope she will be found. 21-year-old garcia torres has been charged with murder. he will enter his plea on august 29. lamar's body has never been found. coming up we'll talk live to sierra's mother about potential new clues and where search efforts are going from here. >> a former school district leader accused of embezzling more than $100,000 will be in court. this morning a judge will decide

if this is enough evidence to bring 55-year-old tim henready to trial. he is accused of taking money from the district. prosecutors say henready turned in fake invoices to the solar panel fund and used that money to remodel his home. >> the search continues for a new superintendent for the berkeley school district. board members interviewed ten candidates so far over nine months. they are looking for somebody to take charge and lead the diverse student body. not everyone agrees diversity should be the factor. it should also be politically savvy. the district plans to appoint two temporary co-superintendents for the upcoming school year. >> checking the forecast is meteorologist christina loren. >> talking about with that upcoming school year, just stafrts to feel like summer as

started yesterday. su wonderful pictures on facebook. be careful out there. >> there is a lot of moving going on on the new span of the bay bridge. christie smith is live on treasure island this morning with why what happens today is going to affect drivers in the next 100 years. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. already leading up to this point there has been a lot of work going on. for months crews have been slowly pulling cable. there are diagonal lifts pulling it up what looks like a ski lift. now it gets complicated, shifting the weight from the steel supports, and then the main available that they have been working on building. making it the longest single loop suspension bridge. this is a slow process. it's called load transfer and

what happens, the crews use hydraulic jacks to create tension, pull the wayne cable. that causes the road to lift up about 18 inches off of the temporary support system. there are a series of steps to make it work. once the load transfer is complete, the table acts as a sling supporting the weight of the entire deck. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> if you are into boating san francisco is the gearing up for the america's cup world series. 11 catamarans are being assembled at pier 30 and 32. they hit the bay for the qualifying races starting next tuesday. the boats used here, they are smaller than the one in the finals race. >> you are basically on a trampoline. if it's wavy, it's obviously a

temperatures continue cooling down. later this week or into the weekend might need an umbrella. it's 6:13. time for a check on the day's top stories. ecuador granting political asylum to julian assange. we give you a live look outside there with police at the door watching the building. he is facing extradition to sweden to face questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. british police say they will arrest asage tsange the minute comes out. >> five months since sierra lamar disappeared on the way to school. searches are ongoing to try to find her body. a 21-year-old has been charged. he will enter his plea in court. >> decision day in the case against sheriff ross mirkarimi. the city's ethics commission expected to decide if mirkarimi

should be fired after pleading guilty toof a misdemeanor. >> a new survey shows a number of workers living paycheck to paycheck is down. career builders says 40% of the workers report they are always or usually relying on their next pay day to make ends meet, down 20%. the peak was 46% back in 2008. >> no secret san francisco is one of the most vibrant cities in the country, some say the world. but it's also one of the most expensive. a new study shows san francisco is one of the least affordable cities nationwide. only manhattan is less affordable than our lovely city by the bay. the median house price in san francisco, $650,000, the median income is $103,000. compare that to the most

affordable city, talking about youngstown, ohio where the median house price is a mere $80,000 while the median income is about $56,000. >> today is the day some of the early starters at facebook will be able to sell their shares. if they want to. >> scott says no matter how facebook's price goes they will make money. >> we're talking about the people in at the very start of facebook, like the paypal found here owns millions of shares and firms like elevation partners and funded in part by bono. they stand to make money despite the fact facebook shares have not performed well in the open market. the big question, will they sell? how many shares will they sell and how will the sudden influx of shares, the float, suddenly

cause facebook's plis to drop. we talked about yesterday in a rational world the availability of a quarter billion new shares should be priced into the market. facebook starts the day at $21 and change, it gained 4% in trading wednesday which we didn't expect. we saw angie's list and it ended its lockup earlier and absolutely plummeted down better than 16%. this is one of five lockups that are ending. in the end, more than a billion shares will be available on the market. >> can't wait to see where it goes. >> christina loren is going to be tough selling this weather? >> no. a much better idea of what the weather holds. weather looking good. we're going to drop off most certainly even through the weekend, and that's great news

if you have been suffering from a high pg&e bill or sick of the heat in the east bay. so temperatures in the triple digits at the start of the week. we're going to end up in the low 90s. here in san jose, starting with this live picture, a full deck of pouds, temperature today 82 degrees. you can't beat that in august. 58 in concord. kind of a brisk start. you can feel the chill in the air. high pressure is going to bring in moisture. we have an area of low pressure on the way to the area. that's going to intercept some of the subtropical areas. what we're talking about are some very interesting weather that nom that. we could see some of these cells, strong thunderstorm cells develop with enough lift in our atmosphere as the two come together. when you talk about conflicting air masses that's when you get the biggest change in the weather.

we want you to be ready though what i can tell you is the best chance of those thunderstorms and showers in the higher elevations up in the north bay and sierra nevada. 91 today. 89 by friday. into the weekend things start to change more so. we're getting a real strong onshore flow. 6:19. starting to get busy out there. >> tracking the south bay. it's busier. a spreading out of volume so the burst is now spreading north all the way up -- here is the airport and the merge. 101 with the slogging. we see there was an accident so the other car has fled. if you hear of anybody that got hurt, give chp a call. starting to pick up the volume. show you what things are like.

comcast sportsnet, the san francisco giants and the oakland a's. by the way, the team is the first from northern california in the little league world series since 10 years ago. >> a 151-game winning streak, now another honor for coach bob. he will be inducted in the hall of fame. he is now the head coach where he racked up five national championships. plus, the team hasn't lost a game in 12 years. >> pretty good streak. >> a great streak. induction takes place in downtown campbell october 26, and a special recognition before the state football team plays texas state on october 27 at spartan stadium. >> 151 victories.

you can feel the magic. we'll have a look at facebook coming up on this thursday, august 16th. this is "today in the bay." >> 6:30 on the nose. good morning. happy you could join us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning you could say it's facebook official. today's opening bell means millions of share of the stock are you no free from lockup. scott joins us. not necessarily good news. >> only if you are one of the early investors and you would like to sell stock. for mom and pop investors it could be a problem. to the first day back in may, on that day more than 400 million shares of facebook were made available for the first time. over the following months the value of those shares dropped and dropped. now this morning with the end of the first lockup, another 250

million shares could enter the market if the holders decide to sell. one way or the other they are now what we call the float, the float increases by 60%, and this is just the first lockup of several, a total of 2 billion shares will eventually be available. as i check facebook stock it's down about 4%, 94 cents to $20.26 as the first trades come across in the first minute of trading. that's not a lot considering, jon, just erases yesterday's mysterious gains. we'll continue to watch. >> we know you'll be on top of that. today is d-day as in decision day for embattled san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. the ethics commission expected to decide whether to uphold misconduct charges by mayor lee. in january mirkarimi was charged with domestic violence after a fight with his wife. he pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor count. the commission must decide

whether to recommend mirkarimi be fired, then it's up to the board of supervisors to decide if he loses his job. we'll have much more on the hearing coming up in a live report at 6:45. >> it's a somber anniversary for the search of missing teen sierra lamar. it's been five months since she was last seen. marla tellez is live in fremont this morning with more on the continuing search plus an exclusive live interview with sierra's mom. must be a tough day for her. >> reporter: no doubt about that. we'll talk to her. good morning to you. here we are five months later, in fact, it was just about this time in the morning five months ago that sierra lamar disappeared, left her morgan hill home, has not been seen since. volunteers have been out searching week after week hoping to bring her home. the woman who wants this most is marlene lamar. thank you for taking the time. >> sierra was abdwukted around

7:20. we're open as a search center on the way to work it was inspiring to see people posting flyers on trucks and cars. and that's real important as a family to see that, be out there because we do have the plight of trying to locate her. it's really frustrating, you know, when it's been this long. but we are continuing with the search and sierra center continues to be open on wednesdays and saturdays. >> can't imagine any day is easy for you. how are you coping? >> it's really difficult. it doesn't get easier. it's really agonizing especially when you know that there are p emthat do have answers that could lead us to her. so -- pretty much stay as a family and the effort to keep the search center open and flyers out there and just

keeping it alive as far as the media, fund-raisers, booths, there will be a booth at hot car cars and hot guitars september 15th, so stimulating that, that our search continues. >> reporter: there is a suspect in custody arrested back in may. did his arrest bring you closure? how do you feel about him? >> i feel that we don't have closure. i feel that he has answers that could lead us to finding her. and i have a plea that he find it in his heart to help end this pain and suffering for many people, family, the volunteers. their determination to find her and not giving up continues but we all want this to end and he does have the answers. >> reporter: our hearts certainly go out to you. you wear this button i imagine on a daily basis.

>> oh, yeah. i try to wear it every day. i just take one day at a time. that keeps me strong and gets me through this. >> thank you for your time. antolin garcia torres is street enter a plea on august 29. live in fremont, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. tough down there. the damage is done at the chevron refinery in richmond. now the damage claims are pouring in. a civil rights attorney and two others have now filed lawsuits on behalf of the victims at the fire accusing gross negligence. a broken pipe is blamed for the fire and the toxic smoke cloud back on august 6. 9,000 people sought medical treatment the day of the fire, the lawsuit asking the court to make chevron pay damages to the victims as well as perform new

members of a militia and it's in a dense jungle. the congo land is full of mineral riches but the practice of mining is very common. >> happening now, a city in mourning. total of 40 people are dead and at least 100 injured as airstrikes target residential neighborhoods in syria. the human rights watch says the strikes have leveled the town of azaz. many of the dead there and injured are women and children including some infants. the human rights watch blaming the syrian government for these attacks. >> new this morning, lawyers for two men accused of covering up sex abuse allegations against jerry sandusky will try to get a judge to drop charges against him. tim curley and retired vice president gary schultz want criminal charges dismissed. curly and schultz are accused of failing to report sex abuse and

lying during grand jury testimony. a report commissioned by the university accuses the two men of burying charges against sandusky convicted of sexually abusing young boys on campus. >> ross mirkarimi will be back in front of the city's ethics commission. that commission must decide whether to recommend mirkarimi be fired from office, then it's up to the board to decide if he loses his job. bob is live in san francisco now with all of the latest on this developing story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that meeting with the commission begins just over two hours from now at san francisco city hall. the ethics commission is expected to decide was sheriff ross mirkarimi's argument with his wife on december 31 the one that left a bruise on her arm, was that official misconduct? if they say yes, then they can recommend to the board of

>> it's soupy at the coast. a little drizzle coming down so you want to give yourself extra time as you wake up. the inner bay also a little bit of drizzle starting up in the north bay. beautiful live look. the sun will break through. you can see not a thick layer of stratus out there. just the layered clouds starting to thin out as the sun is up. it will set at 8 straight up tonight. let's take you to san jose where we're talk about big red noses. i get to open up the circus. it's going to be a great night. temperatures in san jose will be comfortable. 82 degrees. you can't beat that when it comes to the -- yes, usually in the 90s and triple digits so we'll continue the cooldown into the weekend. 58 to start out. 61 here in san jose. and this is where it gets

interesting. this is a really tricky forecast because we've got this area of high pressure, you can see all this subtropical moisture into southern california but you can see it coming up a little further to the north today than it was yesterday. so in addition to that area of high pressure that's warm, moist air we've got an area of dry cool air from the pacific. the two could make for interesting conditions. we're talking thunderstorms and showers as we head into the weekend and the best chance for that will be on saturday in the north bay mountains. the greater bay area, fair game late friday into saturday. you'll notice more humidity. especially in the south bay through tomorrow into sunday. then sunday temperatures in the 80s so. if you're sick of the 90s, we do have cooler weather ahead. look at san francisco, 65 degrees in the city by the bay. requiring a jacket at least for
