local, let's investigate that. right now, the obama team wants to drive up his negatives. that would be a principle goal in the tax story and the way they can do it. >> up to this point and mitt romney saying his tax rate was 13%, the story had been about paul ryan. i made this observation earlier in the week. it was the rarity in politics where the pick delighted conservatives and liberals. is paul ryan going to be a game changer? >> i think he is in terms of sheer enthusiasm on both sides, positive and negative that he is going to generate. i think to the extent romney surprised people, that's what ryan delivers. we're seeing polling out of his home state of wisconsin cutting well into president obama's lead. we will see how much he can deliver in wisconsin or throughout the industrial midwest. i think we need more time to get a sense how much impact he will have. it won't take long for this to revert back to the top of the ticket. >> as much as democrats want to attack ryan on medicare, it is the romney campaign that decided a good offense is a good

defense, going after the president for gutting medicare. are you surprised we haven't seen more in terms of ads from the obama campaign? >> tough to run a campaign where you change a big entitlement program, he knew that with private social security and private accounts. medicare, too. if you explain you're losing. the romney campaign thinks no, you have opportunity to assure people and try not to lose the issue. that's their approach. it will get more intense. >> talk about tone. romney clearly decided to go on the attack on an issue where the president tends to do okay on polls, likability. he made it about hate and it is a disgrace to the presidency. is the romney campaign onto something? >> they have an opening, the bain ad with the guy that lost his wife, sort of implied romney was behind that because he was not at the head of bain at the time but before that, i think that did create opening to go after the president on his likability.

week. off pompano beach, florida, 28-year-old katherine and her husband stephen were vacationing from connecticut and took a parasailing ride together in a side by side harness. but along the way, officials say, there was an apparent equipment failure and katherine fell 150 to 200 feet into the ocean and her death. >> the information we have at this point, the physical evidence and some of the witness statements we have indicates it was a malfunction of the harness. >> reporter: officials say this was the boat involved in the accident with the parasail still on the back deck. rescuers say after the accident, the crew had to first reel in stephen to safety and then circle back to recover kathleen, trying unsuccessfully to revive her. crew members were shaken by the accident. >> you've got to have some sympathy for people hurt. >> what do you want me to feel? >> katherine's father got the horrible news in connecticut where he later talked about his last conversation with his daughter about her parasailing

trip. >> just be safe, you know. that was it. she said, i'll call you when we're down. we never got a call she was down. >> reporter: parasail safety council and industry group estimates there have been 130 million rides involving parasales using harnesses, also 429 serious injuries and 72 fatalities. only nine of them in those years involving equipment failure. parasailing is an unregulated industry in terms of the equipment used. the pompano beach mayor says he's tried unsuccessfully to change that. >> i don't understand why we don't regulate this. is so simple. who would fight against such regulations when you are really saving lives. >> reporter: now, the owner of the parasailing company could

waterproof. >> reporter: hang on. some doctors call those ultrahigh spf numbers a misleading marketing ploy. buy spf 100 instead of spf 50, you might think you're getting double the protection but you're actually only getting 1% more, which doctors say doesn't make a real difference and the fda agrees. there's no evidence anything over spf 50 prekts you any better. yet the spf 70s, 80s, 100, even 110 often cost you more at the store. >> i tell my patients spf over 50 is useless. save your money and stick with the 30 to 50. >> yet the sunscreen companies continue making it and selling it. >> it provides the highest average spf. >> reporter: some of the products even marketed for kids. isn't that deceptive. >> i think as a consumer you make the choice based on what you feel you need. >> we went straight to the industry group representing the sunscreen companies.

>> have you seen evidence anything over spf 50 plus gives you better protection. >> because we are not part of that dialogue, that's not an area i have gotten into. >> you're the industry. you're sitting here representing the industry. >> that's true. >> have you seen any science that shows anything over spf 50 better protects you? >> that scientific door i have not opened because there is a debate going on. >> reporter: some companies like neutrogena and banana boat say the spfs do work better and can offer better protection. setting a limit on the label, they say, would only hurt consumers. but the fda isn't convinced, now proposing new rules that would ban the sky high labels. the limit would be spf 50+. that's it. the fda isn't done yet. those big promises of waterproof and ultrasweat proof, experts say they are misleading, too, making you think you don't have to reapply. >> waterproof and sweat proof are not true. if you go in the water and swim

or ocean or pool and come out, you've lost that sunscreen. >> and that will burn you. using labels, spfs. what's a beach lover to do? >> you're going to buy the highest number, the one that says waterproof, sweat proof, the very best. they are playing on your emotions as a mom. >> not every company is coming out against the spf limit. sunscreen giant coppertone tells us they will go with whatever the fda wants. as for those buzzwords, waterproof and sweat proof, they have been banned. the companies have to change their labels by the end of the year. unfortunately that's in time for next summer not this summer. >> jeff, that's really frustrating for those of us who spent vast portions of our summer with our kids. >> the higher numbers, you have this false sense of security you're covered all day and you don't have to reapply.

became the stuff of headlines. >> was the satisfaction pulling the wool over the very wealthy? >> it was thrilling. >> his biggest score during a three decade long con game, bad boy, that sold for $700,000. >> that was a great moment. i was already planning my next. >> you're searching for the word, your forgery, scam, rip-off. >> no. for me they are artistic projects. >> forgery is one of the old egames in town. >> reporter: sharon fletcher with the international foundation for art research. >> i don't think anyone should be admiring an admitted crook, forger, liar, and con man. >> we wanted ken to show us how he entered some of the world's top art museums and quietly snapped photographs to guide his

inside the embassy for two months after jumping bail in sweden to face allegations of sexual assaults. assange denies the charges and claims once in sweden he will be extradited to the united states to be prosecuted for leaking thousands of secret u.s. diplomatic cables. the documents cover the wars in iraq and afghanistan and embarrassed the u.s. >> the course of the war needs to change. the manner in which it needs to change is not yet clear. >> reporter: there were minor scuffles outside the embassy on thursday just before the ecuadorian government granted assange political asylum. the decision by the ecuadorians gives assange status as a political refugee. the british responded by increasing the police presence around the embassy. >> we will not allow mr. assange safe passage out of the united kingdom, nor is there any legal basis for us to do so. >> reporter: the british upped

>> priscilla, you had a good relationship with elvis eve after the divorce. you continued to be friends up until the end. >> until the end. when we were together you never knew we were divorced. we had a lot of affinity for each other. we were very good friends. >> how did you see him as a father to lisa marie. >> i thought he could be the best father he could possibly be, being who he was. he was a caring father. i sent him pictures, photos. even the times he was gone, i wanted to make sure he was a part of her growth. >> you're now 44 years old. what do you think your dad would be most proud of? >> oh gosh. most proud of, i couldn't answer that. >> i do have to answer that. >> the mother always knows. >> i think elvis would be so proud of her, not just who she is but her talent, her role as a

mother. she's unbelievable. she is the best mom. elvis, even though he was who he was, king of rock and roll, talented, and really belonged to the world, he was still very family oriented. he loved that. i think if he were alive today, he would be just all over those kids, truly adoring them. hugging them, talking to them and having them around all the time. >> what do you think elvis would have been proud of with you, priscilla? >> gosh. maybe she should answer that. >> oh gosh. >> look at this place, it's something, right? >> she has up until now steadfastly defended and protected him beyond belief. from when he was alive, after he passed away. she's done nothing but work diligently, legally, image, everything. she's gone to incredible lengths

and heights that people might not even know about to make sure he's protected. >> you have all talked in the past about the friction as mother and daughter that you have had. how is your relationship now? >> i love my relationship now. i think we all grow. i was a young mother. a young mother in a world that really children don't belong. toyed learn a lot without really a role model. so you know, i had to take those steps and evolve. >> she's actually my best friend, she and riley, to be honest. my mom and i have a really great, almost sisterly, fun relationship now. she understands me, i understand her. ♪ >> i feel lisa is in that period of her life, she has come into her own these last few years. i don't know if it's because of having the twins, another chapter in her legacy.

>> come into your own. does that mean you're more settled or just in a happier place. >> i think happier. more -- less angry, no angry, not angry. more interested in being compassionate and understanding and having -- embracing people in life more than fighting constantly, i think, would probably describe it the best. >> you have someone in your life that's very stabilizing, very grounded, your husband, who has just been amazing. an amazing human being. she got lucky. it took her a while. >> life is good now. fourth husband. >> i learned. i did something different each time. keeping doing something different. that didn't work. it took me a while. it had to be in front of everyone. it's been nine years. we do have amazing little ones.

>> you gave a recent interview. you said the last time you cried was when your 3-year-old daughter told you she made a card for her grandfather who sings. what did that mean to you? >> they kill me when they talk about it. you know, it's just heartbreaking, really, but really sweet. they have a really interesting gravitation towards him. they get really excited coming here. they have everybody standing outside when we drove up. they said, are we having a party? i said, they are celebrating. trying to find a good way to explain it that doesn't make them upset. >> your older kids understand and know what elvis was and is still to this day. how do they feel about him? >> they are very proud and very honored, of course, without question. >> we should mention lisa marie

it is 9:26 now. good morning. i'm marla tellez. a police pursuit ends in a deadly crash in oakland. the chp has confirmed to nbc bay area news the car led officers on a short pursuit and ran a stop sign before plowing into a palm tree. this is at 7th street near maritime street. it happened just before 2:00 this morning. the driver died on impact. the passenger had major injuries. no word on why officers were chasing the car p joop in san francisco, road construction will cause some traffic headaches this weekend for both muni riders and drivers. muni will be replacing part of its track onto bose avenue on church and we arester streets. workers start at 7:00 tonight. as a result, northbound lanes will be closed on church street near market. southbound traffic lanes will

remain open, but the j church line will only operate between balboa park and market street. things are expected to return to normal in time for the morning commute on monday. we will check friday's commute and the forecast after this.
