thanks for waking up with us. just about 4:31. i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. you made to the friday. we've got a great looking weekend shaping up. after all, it's the last hurrah for some kids, many heading back to school on monday. temperatures this weekend are going to be a treat. 56 degrees this morning in san jose, 57 in livermore. we'll take you through the forecast, but first i want to see if there are problems on the roads on a friday morning. hey, mike. >> good morning. one person as far as the roadçs concerned it's open but off eastbound 80 you see slowing, we have an accident, a car off of the roadway and on the shoulder, actually on its shoulder on the skyway off ramp. there are reports of minorç injuries possibly and there may be slowing but this is pretty severe though i'm guessing speeds are only down toward 64.

very light flow. i'll follow those as you head away from the bay bridge. through the area we have construction also getting onto the lower deck, and highway 24 at fish ranch road. we'll give you a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. a light volume heading into the stixt i'll hand it off to laura. you have issues affecting city streets. >> breaking news this morning, an apartment building has been evacuated after what police call suspicious items discovered inside. the building is on the 600 block of jones street, that's between geary street and o'farrell. the bomb squad was called in after it was determined the items may be hazardous. 7 time peop 75 people are on the streets. the following closures, jones from post to geary and geary from taylor to jones. we have a crew on the way to this scene. we're going to have more information throughout the morning. >> this morning san jose police

chief chris moore will hold a meeting with the city's gang task force to talk about options dealing with a recent rash of violence that comes as police investigate the city's 33rd homicide of the year. the latest shooting happened before 11:00 last night at south king road and burrdet. no arrests have been made and police do not know if the shooting was gang related. >> it comes hours after hundreds hit the streets of san jose calling for an end to this violence. jean elle has more on the march and prayer vigil and the efforts to restore peace. >> he got killed by gang violence, both of them. >> reporter: remembering friends killed in san jose, 17-year-old stephanie is wearing a memorial shirt for her friend. her younger family members are wearing a shirt for fernando hernandez, both victims of gang violence. >> it's hard seeing so many

people we know passed away. >> reporter: dozens prayed for peace at our lady of guadeloupe church responding to seven homicides in eight days. the community is asking for peace. ♪ >> reporter: marching through east san jose where violence touches so many families, it feels like the gangs are in charge here. >> we're notç really safe, but stay home. not affiliate with them. >> reporter: while the community organizes politicians debate solutions w the san jose police department short staffed, some council members want the department to call in help so officers can2ujtuj on suppressing the violence. >> we've had a very rough difficult week with a lot of violence. >> reporter: the chief says his department is getting a handle on the spike. >> seriously consider taking help from either the state or chp or other agencies. >> there are folks as we speak, you may see some of them hunting

down folks we know cause problems. >> reporter: groups are promising to maintain a peaceful presence. >> this is the first of many because the way i look at it, you got eight homicides, calling for eight marches. >> reporter: fed up with funerals and fear many are desperate for a solution. >> i want this to stop. >> jean elle, "today in the bay." >> in the midst of the escalating violence and turmoil san jose's chief is getting support. joseph mcnamara is coming to his defense. he ran the department 20 years ago. he survived a vote of no confidence, now considered one of the best chiefs in the department's history. he says it bothers him to see moore go through something similar. officers should not blame moore for the crisis. >> privately i can tell you he feels these cuts have been disastrous for the police

department but it's not up to him. it's up to the people that get elected to decide how many cops there are. >> mcnamara gave his opinion about the idea of bringing in the chp to help patrol the city. he says it is not a solution but a distraction. again, chief chris moore will meet with the gang task force and following that a news conference is scheduled. we'll detail what is expected to come out of it in live reports. >> new this morning the teenage driver accused of killing a concord man and his daughter will be arraigned in juvenile court. david rose season charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of a father and daughter. police say rosen was speeding when he served and struck them. the family wants rosen who was 17 and uninsured at the time of the accident, to be charged as

an adult. >> police need help in finding a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman 18 downtown park. police released this sketch late last night. investigators found the suspect's baseball hat near the scene but no sign of him. the attack happened atç kottinr park. the victim said she noticed someone following her and tried to get away. but she was attacked and robbed. neighbors who live around the park are worried. >> this is a family oriented area and there's always kids out playing p so it surprises me that would happen here. >> here's a look at the suspect sketch again. any one with information is asked to call pleasanton police. >> lance armstrong will be stripped of all seven of his tour de france titles. he made it clear he is not admitting guilt but late last night he announced he would no longer fight the doping charges against him, leveed by the u.s.

anti-doping agency. armstrong's decision means he will be stripped of his seven tour de france titles and all other tight also and earnings and be banned from cycling for life. it's possible the international cycling union could appeal on his behalf. armstrong continues to point out he never tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. he wants to devote more time to his family and his live strong foundation for cancer survivors. >> a lawsuit has been filed against the san francisco 49ers, the nfl and security at candlestick park after a beating last summer. two are suing claiming the league and security did not do their part to keep fans safe. >> new this morning a compost fire outside a nursery continues to burn this morning, dangerously close to a blimp factory. the nursery is yards away from the good year facility in carson. firefighters brought in a

live at the d.c. bureau. let's hope for good things for a friday morning, hampton. >> well, let's hope so. in fact right now we're starting out with futures flat to slightly higher after stocks beat a retreat yesterday the pull back spurred in part by comments from the fed president on cnbc. he threw water on the notion that the fed is closer to new measures to boost the economy a day after minutes from the last fed meeting suggested they may be ready to take action. asian and european markets are lower. we get data later on demand for big ticket durable goods t dow falling 115 points to 13,057, the nasdaq down 20 to 3053 yesterday. mortgage rates are on the rise, ]h straight week. freddie mac says the average rate is now 3.66% up from 3.62% the previous week. analysts say the move higher likely reflects recent positive move in the housing çsector.

hot, not too cold. the envy of the entire nation. we're getting some of the best temperatures in august. 56 in oakland. 54 in san francisco. great looking day shaping up. for outdoor activities it's not too hot and as we talk about the end of august, could be triple digit heat territory, so enjoy the 70s while they last even in the warmest cities across the bay, talking about you livermore, temperatures only are going to reach mid-80s so it works out like this. warm inland, cooler at the coast. you'll get better beach days into next week and temperatures climb. not for long, though. all of the long range models showing another area of low pressure that will cool us off. 62 for today in san francisco. 77 in redwood city. 78 degrees in san jose, and the giants are back at it now they have a four-game winning streak, they bet those braves last night

"today in the bay's" george kiriyama talked to one member from the san jose team. you better believe he hopes that petaluma goes all the way. >> as petaluma continues its amazing run in the little league world series, phil knows exactly what it feels like. >> just throwing the ball and playing baseball. and that we were so focused. that's what i remember about being back there. >> you see, 50 years ago, a group of 12-year-olds from san jose's little league became the first and only bay area team to win the little league world series, a baby-faced phil kagel played first base. >> over the years it's become more and more meaningful to me to think how many people in the world are world champions. >> kagel has a scrap book of memories. >> this is on the plane coming back. >> old newspaper clippings and team photos, autographed baseballs, and even his old

curiosity landing on mars. >> touch down confirmed. we're safe on mars. >> listen to that. that was a celebration at the nasa control room over rover touching down. nasa released the raw footage of the landing with complete play by play. you can see rover dropping 150 meters per second. it shows the last 2 1/2 minutes before curiosity landed on mars. you can find the complete video on nasa's website. >> traffic clearly is just fine on mars. how does it look here in the bay area? >> we're going to start in the south bay, i'm not sure if i saw that same footage but a couple weeks ago, i saw a video at the tech museum. head out to the tech as well as the nasa website. 880 through 101, and brokaw, that area where there is construction but the slowing much less than we saw ten minutes ago. crews likely leaving the area.
