nbc bay area news starts now. >> it is an eerie site. tonight, tropical storm isaac is huge and on course to make land fall somewhere on the gulf coast this coming wednesday. that is also the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina. good evening. let's go straight to the meteorologist right now who's been tracking that storm since it first formed in the atlantic? >> there's a little bit of good news. the storm is strengthening very slowly.

it is still officially with the top wind gust that is 67 miles per hour with the national hurricane center just in five minutes ago, as the winds at 65 miles per hour. it does take it towards new orleans and over the next 48 hours, it's going to encounter very warm temperatures. that's the high ok tan. that's a period of strengtsenning. it's the path you see there in blue. a big difference in intensity. katrina did get up to category four strength. it's the same in reaching new orleans as a category 3 hurricane. so the current path for isaac wednesday morning would be a category one storm. but that path does take it right to the louisiana gulf coast. it's possible that isaac could

strengthen quite a bit more and bringing storm surge of 10 feet. this is a situation that will be changing rapidly in the next few days. >> all right, thanks a lot, rob. emergency officials are urging people in the path of that storm to make sure they have an evacuation plan in place. nbc's jay grey is in port myers, florida tonight. >> reporter: isaac continues to wreck the caribbean. at least four were killed as high wind and rain ripped apart shelters. >> everybody coming through louisiana over through fla fla needs to be watching this carefully. in ft. myers, that includes sandbags. >> this storm surge is what we're concerned with. we're very anxious about this. >> nerves are on end where preparations continue. but events are scheduled for monday where the first national convention has been pushed back

until tuesday because of the storm. >> i think if the chairman thinks it's better, i'm all in favor of it. >> emergency teams are ready to move in when isaac moves through. >> there are over 100 red cross workers in the state of florida right now. as the storm decides where to go, we're mobile and able to move those resources as quickly as possible. the current track shows the storm growing to a category 2 hurricane with 100 mile an hour winds before entering florida. >> there's a lot of fuel out there for the hurricane and it could easily intensify, holding things together. >> holding things together could become increasingly difficult as conditions take a turn for the worse. jay grey, nbc news, ft. myers. >> forcing republicans to change their plans for the national

convention in florida this coming week. they're releasing a new, shortened, three-day schedule starting on tuesday. presidential candidate mitt romney will now be officially nominated tuesday instead of monday. governor romney will speak on thursday, the last day of the suspension. officials say there could be more changes to the schedule fending on the palt of that storm. >> 25-year-old ricky gill is going for elected speaker. >> hello, dianne. not only is ricky gill the soul candidate from the west, he is also the youngest of the speakers. the candidates of the 9th congressional district feels honored and is kpieted to

dianne? >> all right, thank you, kimberly. on the other side of the aisle, the democratic national convention is scheduled to begin on september 4th in charlotte, north carolina. this weekend, thousands of people lined up outside campaign offices to get a ticket to that event. she looks happy. tens of thousands of people are expected to attend this convention. the list of speakers include chicago mayor, caroline kennedy, eva longoria and, of course, president obama himself. and new tonight, last night they reported san francisco is the highest median home price in the country? well, they also happen to have the highest-paid police officer in america. he earned more than $321,000 last year. the chief in los angeles made about $307,000. several cities have a higher

crime rate than san francisco, as well. he says he is not surprised his pay is the highest given san francisco's reputation for generous compensation and the higher cost of living. speaking of san jose, neighbors are joining in a fight gens a recent surge in violence there. the homicide rate is on pace to beat a 15-year high and police have responded by putting more officers on the street. nbc bay area's francis joins us with what some are doing? montey? >> police say that much of this violence is gang-related. they're also boosting the overtime budget. but the community is responding in its own way. there have been eight homicides in just the past two weeks in a city that was once long

considered the safest in the nation. many of the church members are ex-gang members and so are two of the senior gang members into the highest crime areas of san jose and trying to reach those gang members with a spiritual message. >> i think our experience of being there at one time is able to relate to them and being able to say, look, i know what it's like. i know what you feel. >> the police department is spending $800,000 for overtime. that rally for peace is set to take place tomorrow in front of san jose city hall at 6:30, p.m. live in san hoe sajose, nbc bay

the pedaluma little league team will be returning home tomorrow for a little league's welcome. but, today, after that heart wrenching loss, the team was actually back on the field. >> bradly smith, nice. >> pedaluma took on panama in the consolation game. they scored early and often cruising to a 12-4 win to take third place.

again, the little leaguers and their families are scheduled to fly tomorrow morning at 11:00. there's a parade planned for the team next sunday at walnut park. as for the little league world series title game, japan beat tennessee 12-2. another world series, this one on the water also wrapped up today in the san francisco bay. and thou sans of fans were treated to a thrilling finish. nbc bay area's lauren scott will look at all of the action on the water. >> it was a great experience all around here. especially on this championship sunday. >> round one is in the books and on super sunday, it was a thriller between both oracle teams. battling to the finish where koosk takes victory. >> they may have forgotten them.

rattling southern california today. the usgs says 5.5 and happened just before 2:00 this afternoon near the emperial valley town of raleigh. it started at about 10:00 this afternoon and then kept on going throughout the day. that's more than a hundred miles east of san diego. they shook some bodies off the shelves and several older books offered some cosmetic damage. there were no reports of injuries, so. >> firefighters batling a fire south of reading have a new challenge. strong winds are threatening a fire to jump its containment line. they issued a red-flag warning because of the wind and the warning time was just after firefighters were able to gain about 75% containment. the fire has destroyed 64 homes so far and another 300 are still threatened.

we do want to check in on the weather. it actually helped to break up the low cloud. some of the dry air mixed down to the marine layer. got us through the sunshine. let's take another look at that. world series at the sunshine. gorgeous condition. windy and cool across the bay. they did improve a bit because we had more sunshine. 64 degrees. but look at san jose. only 71. how about livermoore, you don't see that too much in august. we've got 60s pretty much across the board. you're seeing that in oakland. west wind up to 20 miles per hour. so that trigger for the winds is just here off to the north and is cranking up the breeze across

northern california in the bay area. we're going to see high pressure building closer to northern california. we're going to see temperatures starting to warm up. so we'll see 70s to mid 80s. inland come tomorrow. despite the fact that we'll have lots of low clouds. look at the low clouds all the way into stockton tomorrow morning. temperatures are trending a bit warmer as we head towards the afternoon. but by this time, we'll see more low clouds filling locally inland across the bay. dress is layers tomorrow. you can see by lunchtime, warmer than today's high temperatures. right around 1:00 tomorrow. 'eel see 80s coming back. 80s for the south. you'll see the morning temperatures coming on up for your monday. >> temperatures turning warmer.

it looks like wednesday through thursday will be the warmest. we seem to be in a sea breeze pattern here. we're going to have warm temperatures for the middle part of the week. and then cooling off as we look at the low clouds come back. cooling off for the weekend, but overall, not too bad. just not nearly as chilly as the weekend we just went through. >> all right, thank you, rob. we'll be back right after the break with why jimmy fallon will not be hosting this year.
