region and today, volunteers from the bay area will help. >> first, we begin with a scare in a south bay neighborhood. coyote sightings have been reported in westç san jose. it's something that has arturo santiago is live with why it's scaring more than people in the neighborhood. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we're at forest hills elementary school in san jose because one of the obvious concerns is over small children. what is fueling a lot of that concern is that a number of neighborhood cats have been killed. there have been incidents down the street from here on vanderbilt drive, people reported finding dead cats on their lawns, others sayç their cat has been killed by coyotes.ç some have even seen and heard coyotes howling in their front yard. there isn't much that can be

done. according to the department of fish and game, coyotes cannot be legally trapped and relocated, that is unless they are hurt, sick or orphaned. people around here do want their neighbors to at least be aware that there may be coyotes running around the area. some experts on coyotes say there are a few things people can do. limit the things that attract them such as open trash ì& also water sources. in the meantime, neighbors vigilant. >> new this morning a fire at a refinery in venezuela is still burning after a deadly explosion this weekend killed 39 people, injuring at least 80 more. take a look at that thick cloud, black smoke filling the sky. a gas leak caused the refinery to explode over the weekend. more than 200 homes were damaged, forcing residents to cf1 o

>> two more american soldiers in afghanistan have been killed by an afghan colleague 18 series of attacks that left 29 dead. officials say the soldiers were shot and killed by one of their allies in the eastern part of the country. the shooting appears to be accidental. and in the south insurgents killed 17 afghan civilians taking part in a music festival. a local leader says the taliban killed them to show their disapproval of the event. ten afghan soldiers were also killed at a check point in the south. >> new amateur video out of syria claims to showç a syrian army helicopter shot downç by rebels. the helicopter burst into flames after it was hit and then crashed into a residential neighborhood. syrian state television says a helicopter had been shot down in damascus but offered no further details about the incident. >> a tsunami warning has been lifted across central america this morning following last night's powerful earthquake near

el salvador a. 7.4 quake struck off the coast just after 10:30. about an hour later a 5.4 after shock hit theç same area. a number of smaller çaftershoc were reported in that area. >> happening now, the gulf coast is bracing for that hurricane as tropical storm isaac churns toward the u.s. >> forecasters predict the storm could become a hurricane as early as today. isaac made its presence felt in the caribbean, at least seven people reported dead in haiti after the storm swept flew the island this weekend. streets are flooded, buildings collapsed. more than 14,000 people forced out of their homes and isaac is only getting çstronger. we have team coverage. emergency crews from the bay area are preparing to assist with storm relief efforts. christina is tracking isaac in our weather center. but we begin with danielle where

preparations are well under way. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. windy along the beach but many are waking up and getting ready to evacuate. the governor has issued evacuation orders for most people along the coast, saying it's time to get to higher ground. yesterday we sawç people beginning to get ready, gatheringç plywood, sandbags a other emergency supplies so that they are not caught offguard by this storm. also emergency teams staging at states including where i am in alabama and louisiana, mississippi and florida. of course louisiana is watching this hurricane, this tropical storm i mean to say, very closely as it veers more toward louisiana and could potentially hit new orleans on the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina, something people are worried about. all of these states are inç states of emergency right now. everyoneç watches and waits to see what path this so far

unpredictable storm will take. danielle lee, back to you. >> christina is tracking isaac's movement. what do you see? >> we just received the latest update from the national hurricane center and what i can tell you is that isaac has slowed down a touch. basically t intensity is the same, category 1 storm is 74 miles per hour plus. you can tell that this is arr end tropical storm and it does look like it will makeç a landfall near louisiana, the gulf coast, northern gulf coast, possibly new orleans. that's where the futurecast and intensity is taking it. through late tomorrow, early wednesday, early wednesday would make that the anniversary of hurricane katrina. hurricane katrina was a category 3 storm, much stronger than what we are expecting. we'll continue to track this, in addition we're taking a look at your local forecast. minor changes but yes, blessed

to be waking up onç the west coast. >> thanks so much. red crossç volunteers from the bay area are headed to where they are needed the most to help with tropical storm isaac. stephanie chuang is live at sfo where they will leave this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. we know that a group of local folks from the american red cross will be heading out from here and mineta san jose, sometime today, may be in the afternoon most of them to leave. a spokesperson telling us this morning that the group hasn't determined exactly when yet. but what we know is 15ç volunteers from twoç chapters e leaving. another 11 from the silicon valley chapter heading to miami, tampa and orlando to get ready for the arrival of tropical storm isaac. they are a handful of hundreds of trained workers headed out where the red cross has been preparing to set up dozens of

shelters across the state. they are said to be 50 response vehicles there with another 78 on standby. and volunteers including from our area will do everything from supervising those vehicles toç m9ñ also to counseling and emotional support. our local men and women heading there will be on disaster assignment for from two to three weeks and most of them have been on disaster assignment. live at sfo, stephanie chuang. >> a woman who jumped off the richmond/san rafael bridge yesterday recovering in the hospital this morning. officers say the 30-year-old woman was weaving on southbound 101ç around 2:00 yesterday morning. when they tried to pull herç or she sped on the bridge, started swimming. the coast guard swimmer retrieved her from the water and police arrested her on the spot.

starting out, it's 5:11. east bay homeowners and local leaders will learn more about what caused a fire at the chevron refinery. christie smith is live in richmond. she's got additional details on today's meeting. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's three weeks since that massiverefinery fire here in richmond, and peopleç who live here have a lot of questions about the impact of that. what's happening today is that city and county health leaders are going to be holding a community meeting about the investigations that are going on and there are five investigations going on at the same time with state, federal and local agencies, this comes as chevron has closed its claim centers, two of them in richmond that were set up after the massive fire on august 6. that sent a huge plume of black smoke over the city and thousands of people showed up at hospitals complaining of irritation andç breathing problems after that fire,@o18,00 claims have been handled by chevron so far. the company says it will

continue to maintain its 800 number for claims. an oakland attorney says 3,000 have signed on to try and take legal action against chevron. the meeting should give richmond residents a clearer picture of the process and what investigators have learned so far that meeting at city council chambers, 440 civic center plaza, that meeting is today at 10:00 this morning and it's the first of several meetings to deal with this issue. reporting íive in richmond, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:13. it's a new day for apple and samsung after friday's verdict against the korean phone maker. scott says it's not over. >> until it's over. analysts trying to figure out what friday's verdict against samsung means. apple is going to sue google next? phone makers have to go back to the drawing board? the truth is the fight between apple and samsung is not over despite the billion-dollar verdict handed down by a san

four-year highs but they ended the week down for the week despite a rally on friday. asian and european markets today have been mixed, london closed, so there's not that much volumeç a lot of vacation going on. we'll getç reports this week o home prices, consumer confidence and gdp. the focus is likely on ben bernanke, the fed chairman speaking out at the conference in wyoming on friday. the dow comes off the 100-point gain friday to start at 13,157, the nasdaq was up 16 at 3069 thanks in part to apple. hertz to buy dollar thrifty ending a long running pursuit of a smaller rival. hertz is theç number 2 u.s. ca company. hertz had been going at it with avis back and forth to try to take over for about two years. in order to get the green light hertz needs to sell its rental

fire. the plane was registered to dell aç mora of fresno. the identities have not beenç released but a co-worker says dell a had planned to return that same day. >> we will learn more on what caused a deadly air race crash in reno. the national transportation safety board says it will release its conclusion to the year-long investigation. officials have been focusing on loose screws in the plane's tail when a section tore off. the accident happened during last year's air races, 11 people were killed and dozens othersç injured. this year's raceç will be in a few weeks and extra safety inspections will be performed. >> chevron has new answers about the cause of an explosion and fire at the richmond refinery earlier this month. christie smith is live in richmond now with the story. good morning.

tropical storm isaac is gaining strength as it heads into the gulf coast. people living in that region are preparing for the worst after what happened during hurricane katrina seven years ago. hurricane warnings are in effecç across the entire coastal ç region. in louisiana people have been sandbagging throughout the weekend for likely flooding. forecasters say isaac could turn into a category 2 hurricane as it marches toward new orleans. >> now is not the time to panic but it is the time to engage, to get ready throughout the year we talked about being prepared, now is the time to begin to execute. >> the power is out across the southeast, thousands are in the dark in that area. >> isaac changed the schedule for the republican convention iç tampa. it's all but scrapped for today as the storm bears down. tracie potts is live in florida as the weather puts a damper on the republican party. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it looks like we may have dodged

a bullet for the most part, lots of rain here earlier today and we may get more, flooding is still a big concern but we'll not according to the forecasters, take the brunt of this storm. it is headed toward new orleans. however, the day's events had already been canceled. they are going to meet for about five minutes to officially open the convenfion, and then come back tomorrow trying to squeeze all of the day's activities and events and speakers from two days into one. what does that mean? the big question, are they going to be able to get out the me message the mitt romney story as the chair of the rnc calls it. they have less time to do so, less time here to convince the public that he should replace president obama. and insiders admit the big challenge is going to be improving the mitt romney likability factor. they think when it comes to the economy they can catchç up wit this very narrow lead the presidentç seems to have in mo

gruesome but it is the reason why people are going more and more concerned not only forç ps but for the children who live and goútf school in the area. some of the -- a number of the residents, of the incidents that is, have taken place on vn der built drive, finding cats that look like they have been mauled. others say their cat has fallen victim to coyotes. one family has seen and heard coyotes howling on their front yard. even if it is determined there are coyotes not a lot can be done. the department of fish and game cannot legally trapç and reoctober coyotes.ç neighbors want to at the very least raise awareness so people can be prepared. according to coyote experts there are a number of things to do. fallen fruit, open trash container and sources of water can attract coyotes.
