6:00 am
>> you're not alone. we'll show you the backups as well as the accident for 580 coming up. >> and giving you a live look that is san francisco, that is a nm on this monday, august 27th, this is "today in the bay."ç >> good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> our big story, tropical storm isaac, we have live team coverage this morning. stephanie chuang is live at sfo, where volunteers will be leaving in a few hours. christina loren is tracking the storm, but first let's go to scott gordon live in new orleans where a hurricane warningç is effect the day before thmç seventh anniversary of katrina's landfall. good morning, scott. >> reporter: good morning to you. people here along the gulf coast are waking up to a lot of uncertainty. nobody is sure where this storm
6:01 am
will roar ashore or how strong it will be when it gets here. what is certain is that it's carrying winds of about 65 miles an hour, at last report, still tropical storm strength. isaac is still a tropical storm at this point. keep in mind it would have to reach wind speeds of 74 miles an hour toç become a igimal category one hurricane. they expect to the become hurricane strength later tonight, perhaps in the overnight hours. it's not strengthening quite as fast as forecasters had predicted so that's good news. they expect it to come ashore as a category one, perhaps category two storm and that's also an improvement over the earlier forecast when they predicted category two. it's going to be a huge rainmaker, could dump 10 to 12 to 14 inches of rain on new orleans and the entire coastal area here in as little asç a 24-hour period so. a massive amount of çrain, it will carry wind and people are taking it very seriously.
6:02 am
there are mandatory evacuations in some of the lower lying coastal areas around new orleans, but here in new orleans itself, no mandatory evacuations at this point the mayor is taking a wait-and-see attitude. waiting to see what happens over the next several hours before deciding whether any large scale evacuations are necessary. so that's the situation here. people bracing for what will come in the next day or so. >> which is pretty amazing because it looks like the big calm before the storm right now, scott thanksç so much. >> reporter: it really is. you çbet. >> for the latest on where the storm is now, let's go right to meteorologist christina loren in the nbc bay area weather center. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. i want to start with this wide view to show you the size of this sprawling storm. it is just massive. you can see just about the size of the entire florida peninsula. right now it's skirting up the coastline. we talk about landfall we're talking about when the actual eye of the hurricane or the strongest winds are circulating. when that comes on shore and
6:03 am
right now it looks like isaac will make a çlandfall potentiay as a weak catego@y one storm with winds of about 85 miles an hour along the northern gulf coast. look where the latest advisory, this just came in from the national hurricane center, is taking isaac. that's right, right into new orleans as category one. katrina made landfall as a category three so. this is not as strong, we're still concerned. we're going to track this all morning, in addition we have your local forecast in a few minutes. ladies, back to you. >> speaking of local, red cross volunteers from the bay area headed to where they are needed most to helpç with tropical stm isaac.ç stephanie chuang is live at sfo where they are going to leave later this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this is an experienced group we're told, the american red cross saying the men and women leaving from bay area to florida have worked on disaster assignments before. there are 16 people headed out from here locally, four from the

6:05 am
how it's impacting the gop convention. for updates head to our website nbcbayarea.com. >> in a few hours people living near a chevron refinery in richmond will learn more about what covered that recent fire at the plant. christie smith is live in wrchd more on this meeting. good;hmorning. >> reporter: good morning. the questionç that we kept getting over and over again from people in richmond is that they were concerned about the long term health effects, that areally for young people, old people, people with asthma so what's happening is that the county health department and city leaders are olding this community forum and they are going to be updating people on the investigation, in fact, there are five separate investigations going on at this same time. state, local, and federal agencies. this comes as chevron has closed its claim centerç set up after the massive fireç on august 6

one of the obvious concerns is over small children and what's fueling the concern is recently a number of neighborhood cats have been killed. down the streetç from here on vanderbilt drive. people reported finding dead cats on their lawns. others say their cat has been killed by coyotes. some have seen and heard coyotes in their front yard. there isn't much that can be done. according to the department of fish and game coyotes cannot be legally trapped and relocated unless hurt, sick or orphaned. people here do want neighbors to at least be aware that there may be coyotes running around in the area. some experts say there are ç things, a few things that families can do, they can limit the things that attract coyotes such as fallen fruit, open trash containers and sources of water. in the meantime, neighbors will remain vigilent. >> samsung executive says

6:17 am
legal system moves pretty slow. so samsung has phones out right now, so new they are not covered by this ruling. apple is going to want to take those on as well. there is some interesting math. apple at one point offered to license its technology to samsung, 24 bucks a phone. we figure that would cost samsung about a half a billion instead of the billion plus it has to pay çnow. apple stock up betfer than 3% in premarket trading. that's about $18 billion in added capitalization. this is when a billion plus in jury awards doesn't look that big when you talk about $18 billion. >> the percentages that go up. amazing. thank you. >> good perspective in giving us a good perspective on the forecast is christina loren. >> good morning to you ladies. we've got a great looking day shaping up. one of those weeks you'll want to get outdoor you have the luxury to do so, though many kids are headed back toç school today. but hey, they are going to get
