4:31 am
whipping across the gulf coast this morning stretching from louisiana to parts of the florida panhandle. good morning. thank you for joining us. it is 4:31. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. more than 20,000 homes are without power. the storm is unleashing fierce winds, soaking rains, seven years to the day that hurricane katrina devastated new orleans. many residents say this time they trust the levees will hold. danielle lee has the latest on the conditions. >> reporter: isaac is coming ashore with a fury. vicious winds and rev rain are barreling down on coastal cities in four different states. it's knocking down trees and taking down power lines. in new orleans 300,000 have lost power by the early morning. violent waves hurling down along the coast and storm surges up to 12 feet high leave low-lying
4:32 am
areas under water. >> strong winds, heavy rain r long period of time could produce flooding well away from the coast. >> the storm is expected to last in new orleans at least 24 hours and could bring more than a foot of rain. >> we're in the heart of this fight and in the hunker down phase. >> reporter: on the mayor's advise, many neighbors are helping each other survive. >> it's about knowing who is here so if something bad happens, you know where you have to stop. >> you never know who you need in this world. >> reporter: lessons learned from a hurricane that struck exactly seven years ago today. this is a palm frond that was just ripped off a tree behind me. as this rain comes down, the threat of flooding intensifies in new orleans. i'm dan dwrel lee for nbc news. >> thank you. let's bring in christina loren to look at isaac's position.
4:33 am
>> they haven't experienced the worst in new orleans right now. let's show you where isaac is situated. still about 50 miles due south of new orleans. that's where the center of the storm is located. that's where the strongest winds are as well. we have max winds of 80 miles per hour and we get gusts up to 105 miles per hour. the biggest component of this storm is going to be the speed. it is moving a snail's pace, so if we head through the next six to eight hours through most of the day today they will experience hurricane-force winds and potentially just very, very big flood issues because there's a lot of rain coming down, up to 2 feet in some spots. we'll watch that tracking intensity. we'll have the latest upup date at 5:00 and we'll bring you the latest. that's a big storm and not going anywhere anytime soon. back to you guys. new this morning fire crews putting out hotspots at a popular south bay nursery that

4:35 am
what you have is here pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and other toxic chemicals in here. that's what they do for growing plants and sales. that was the complicating factor. they're highly toxic and flammable when they're on fire, and the fire moved very rapidly. it's 10,000 square feet, and within a couple minutes there was fire in the whole structure. our intent chs to control the fire, make sure we didn't realize many of the chemicals. we changed our tactics and allowed some of the those ins t insecticides and pesticides burn off. right behind here is the guadalupe river, so our concern was runoff. unfortunately the structure was severely damaged. >> this is a commercial area and neighborhoods surround it. are you concerned the toxicity got in the water? >> great question.
4:36 am
we have done surveys and they feel confident we kept it outside the river and the neighborhoods are safe. thankfully it was a low wind night so the smoke was directly up. so we were able to prevent the neighborhood from being affected. luckily due to the weather and good tactics this is mitigated as well as you can hope for. >> thank you so much, captain. he says, though, that the cause is under investigation, but he says it does not appear to be linked to any sort of criminal intent. that's the latest from here. we're live in san jose. cleanup continues in san francisco's visitation valley this morning after a massive water main break. the public utilities commission says two water pipes ruptured at sunnydale avenue and core street at 11:00. thousands of water pouring into the street. several homes, a church and school flooded. students evacuated from our lady of visitation school. they say their classroom filled
4:37 am
very fast with two feet of water. >> the water was like pulling it away, and then it go higher and higher every minute. so we had to move all our stuff into the front of the classroom. that way nothing got wet, and we had to evacuate. >> this morning the cause of that break remains under investigation. two dozen homes are still under evacuation order. we have a crew at that scene, and we will have a live report in the next half hour. now on to decision 2012. republicans have formally nominated mitt romney as their presidential candidate. it was voted from new jersey during last night's roll call. that's what the governor over the top securing the nomination. romney's wife, ann, addressed the convention last night painting a personal pictures of her husband rarely seen on the campaign trail. >> i met somewhere mitt and i have a storybook marriage. no, not at all. what we have is a real marriage.

4:41 am
we have changes and that weekend around the corner. we have that seven-day forecast in a few moments. i notice more and more traffic out there each morning. kids get back to school. >> there's a shift in the commute toward the beginning of fall and summer for these kids. we look to the east bay where this has nothing to do with school. this is an early morning accident. been there for over an hour blocking the slow lane at westbound 80 at willow avenue. eastbound shows slowing, but that may be a distraction north from highway 4. in richmond there's slowing because of that as well as construction. that's a big deal taking out three of four lanes an san pablo. a smooth drive through richmond and the berkeley area. 580 has a lane blocked. we look at the maze, and otherwise a smooth drive here. live look outside shows you a construction zone through pallilo aloe. here's 101 toward the

4:43 am
you'll need to dial 1 plus the area code plus the phone number for all calls. o.k., but what if i have an 408 number and i'm calling a 408 number? you'll still need to dial 1 plus the area code plus the phone number. so when in doubt, dial it out!
