tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  August 29, 2012 5:00am-6:00am PDT

5:00 am
strong winds and heavy rains throughout the day. also a popular south bay nursery goes up in flames overnight. i'll tell you why this fire was so hard to fight coming up. >> i'm tracking the accidents and construction blocking lanes as you approach the bay bridge. a live look outside. palace of fine arts in san francisco's marina district. beautiful way to start the wednesday morning, august 29th. this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning, and thanks for joining us. 5:00. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. hurricane isaac is ripping across the gulf coast this morning. we have a tower cam shot from new orleans. it caught transformers exploding. that noticed out power to 31,000 people. a total of 300,000 people are
5:01 am
without power. we have a live report from danielle lee. >> reporter: good morning. you may see emergency crews and ambulance now passing down behind me. this is the second ambulance we've seen drive down this street in the last couple of minutes. we'll try to find out what that is for you, but it gives awe a sense how chaotic things are as the hurricane comes through. as the sun begins to rise on the french quarter, we get a sense of the debris that has fallen because of the storm. you see palm fronds falling from the trees, and we have to be out of the way. you can make out a police car that passed through. we've seen a lot of police cars patrolling this area for several reasons. one, for safety and two to make sure no one is out here and we've heard about rumors of flooding and looting and other parts of the city without power, not here in the french quarter. they're trying to make thur that doesn't happen. at last report nearly half a million people in this city alone are without power.
5:02 am
because of the magnitude of the outages, it's likely going to be that way for several days. the emergency crews and energy employees are here keeping track of it, but they cannot do anything about the power outages until the winds down die below 30 miles per hour. another big concern is flooding as the storm sits on us and dumps more sxhor rain. that increases the likelihood that more streets that will be underwater. i can tell thaw the levees in the plaquemines parish are threatened right now, and we have heard of water dumps over the levees. sheriff's deputies have to make sure people sht in that area. reporting live in new orleans, i'm danielle lee. back to you. >> danielle, do you know if any evacuations are going long along the gulf coast, or they're telling people to sit and stay in if you never left? >> reporter: in plaquemines parish they were supposed to
5:03 am
evacuate before the storm, and not even did. because the storm surges water was dipping over that levees and threatened the area to make sure people were out. they were very many mandatory evacuations throughout the coast, and some stayed behind. most of those people in those areas have left at this point. >> danielle, the water has been dumping over for a few hours, are they worried the levees will be ultimately damaged or start to give way? >> reporter: that isn't a concern right now. it's the storm surge, and the water level is ridesing with this storm. it's dumping over the levees. the levees are designed to hold the water back like a soup bowl. once it gets above a certain point it pours over the levees. the levees are strong but the water is bouncing over. >> all right. thank you very much. live from new orleans this morning. the rain is pounding down on her. christina loren has been watching isaac's movement in our
5:04 am
nbc bay area weather center. what are you seeing? >> new orleans has not yet seen the worst of it, so as we getd the live reports, we will be showing you as isaac makes it's most substantial impact on the new orleans area. right now the center of the storm which has the wind speeds of 80 miles per hour is 40 miles south of new orleans. throughout this morning we're going to see the damage. we're talking about a prolonged period of sustained winds at 80 miles per hour gusting from time to time to 10 5 miles per hour. the biggest issue with this storm, it is moving at a snail's pace. we're talking about very, very bad conditions in this area for upwards of 6 to 7 hours. much of the day just getting hammered. so widespread power outages continue to come in, and also we've had a couple tornado warnings prompted by this storm. so we are not even through the worst part of isaac just yet.
5:05 am
we keep you updated. whether it comes to the local weather, looking much better. we'll have that report in a few moments. back to you for now. fire crews in the south bay keeping an eye on the charred remains at an overnight fire of a popular san jose nursery. it wasn't the size that made it difficult to fight. fire crews said it got complicated when the soil and fertilizer went up in flames. "today in the bay's" marla is live with an update on this continuing investigation. marla, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you speak the truth. the fire captain explains to me that fertilizer is a natural accelerant, so it is so highly flammable. that was one of the concerns that caused these crews to let the flames burn out on their own before dousing it with water. right now a live look of what's left of the summer winds nursery at the corner of branam and almadine expressway. fire crews remain out here
5:06 am
checking for hotspots. there was a flare-up a few minutes ago it to put out the flames. the call came in at 11:45 last night. it was a three-alarm fire. the captain was surprised by the sheer size of shear size of it when they pulled up. most of the building is gone this morning. the main concern was all the chemicals from the fertilizers primarily because the guadalupe river runs right behind this property. that is why a hazardous materials team was brought in. >> we had them out here, and they had intensive testing equipment to ensure there was nothing in the water supply in the guadalupe river and that the ground water around you is not possibly dangerous. >> reporter: summer winds nursery has been here for about 50 years. this is according to the district manager.
5:07 am
he was frankly heartbroken this morning. he's never seen a fire so big before. >> i've gotten past the shock stain. the reality is beginning to set in. already thinking of how we can open it back up again quickly. >> reporter: he says that he does plan -- he has great plans to re-open summer winds nursery again. he says about 20 people work here. they call this place home in terms of their employment. he says most definitely they're all filled with sorrow this morning. as for the cause of this fire, the fire captain says it does not appear to be caused from any sort of criminal intent. for now we're live in san jose, marla tayes, "today in the bay." police in the east bay hope a new sketch will track down a man impersonating a police officer. it take a close look. pleasanton police say a man dressed up as a police officer
