airport. >> right now there are fears the plane has been hijacked. passengers are still on board, however the budget airline that owns the jet says it's just a miscommunication, and they're denying that a hijacking took place. we'll give you more information about the budget airline as soon as we can. >> keep on top of that story. new this morning, new details about an overnight fire that gutted a up popular south bay nursery. firefighters say they don't know why it started, but they now know where it started. we're live in the south bay with new details. marla, good morning. >> good morning. it is hard to see but it's awfully smoky out here. that's one of the reasons why fire crews remain on the scene. they're checking for hotspots. i'll show you what was summer winds nursery. it's completely gutted this morning. the building itself here at the corner is about 10,000 square feet. the property is about four

acres. from what firefighters say, much of the building is gone this morning. it went up in flames about 11:45 last night. the district manager says he was notified right away. >> i parked across the street, and i couldn't believe it. i've never so much fire in my entire life in one location. i was shocked. >> reporter: he referred to the san tan notitana row fire when fire in 2002. the fire captain haven seen a fire like this because of all the chemicals inside, the fertilizers and insecticides made this fire difficult to fight. the guadalupe river runs right behind the property. >> we had hazardous materials out here, and they have very intensive testing equipment to ensure that there was nothing in the water supply in the

guadalupe river and that the ground water you see around you is not possibly dangerous. >> reporter: a little bit of good news it this morning. not everything is wiped out. many of the pots, garden supplies, even some of the trees and plants made it out okay. as for the cause, that's under investigation. the fire captain says it appears that the flames ignited right near the electrical box inside. for now we're live in san jose, marla taeyes, today it the bay. the man accuses of kidnapping and murdering sierra lamar was supposed to be in court today, but he won't. he was scheduled to ber a plea today, but that's expected to be continued to another day because of a judge who was assigned to the case cannot be there. santa clara county sheriff's department arrested garcia torres in may. he is accused of kidnapping and killing her in march. police hope a new sketch

will track down a man intern naturing a police officer. take a close look. pleasanton police say earlier this month a man that resembles this one in the sketch dressed up as a police officer and pulled over a motorist. he handcuffed the victim and sexually assaulted her and took over. understandably many news of the aattack has many on edge. it's prompted one business owner in the area to take action. >> i made a conscious decision not to rent out security uniforms or police look-alike costumes to keep society a little more safe. >> look at the sketch again. he was last seen in a dark four-door sedan. if you have any information about the incident, call pleasanton police. engineers are checking for structural damage this morning after a truck plowed into the side of a 7-eleven. the pickup truck made it more than halfway into the store in the 1900 block of bridgeway

boulevard. we're told the store was open at the time, and a number of people were actually inside. fortunately and amazingly no one was hurt. police say the driver lost control of the vehicle. at this point no word if that driver has been cited. two dozen homes still under evacuation orders in san francisco aafter a massive water main break sent thousands of gallons into the water. thousands of gallons of water onto the streets. we're live where the cleanup is continuing in the visitation valley. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we're getting on top of the hole that encompasses most of the intersection behind me. take a look for yourself. the 3 1/2 foot water main is exposed and a capped gasolin li. in some spots this hole is as deep as 15 to 20 feet. the latest word is crews have been working overnight to restore power to homes in the area. water to homes has already been

stored. that happened just after midnight. a 42-inch water pipe ruptured wednesday morning at the intersection. thousands of gallons of water flooded the area, which includes a school and more than a dozen homes. it created this 20 x 30 foot hole in the road. the water flow down sunnydale avenue and right into our lady of the visitation school. >> the water was pulling it away. it got higher and higher like every minute. so we had to move all our stuff into want front of the classroom that way like nothing got wet. we had to evacuate. >> reporter: now, a few things have to happen before people are allowed back into their homes today. crews have to clear out the debris and put up a temporary road around the hole and the department of buildings and inspections has to give its approv approval. the school won't open until september 4th.

they have to clear out all the debris so they can get a good look at athe ruptured water main to see what caused the rupture. now for the latest on hurricane isaac as it continues to batter the gulf coast this morning. we take a live look -- a look at the storm on the radar right now. you can see a lot of green there swirling around that is affecting the coast from texas to parts of the florida panhandle at this hour, and this one will eventually make its presence felt in arkansas, oklahoma and in missouri. now, isaac, of course, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. trees are down and power is out all across the south. we have a live look at the gulf coast right now. new orleans alone, more than 300,000 people have lost power by the early morning. this is a live look at some of the crews out there. you see al roker there for a brief moment preparing for live shots clearly in the elements. the storm is expected to stay at least 24 hours. it could bring more than a foot of rain.

on the mayor's advice many neighbors devastated by katrina around just hunkering down but helping each other survive. >> it's about knowing who is here so if something bad happens, you know where you have to stop. >> you never know who you will need in this world. >> ironically it's seven years to the day that happened on 2005. >> that is a strange irony here. >> when the worst of it will be over. >> i zac is moving at a snail's pace. what i can tell you when it comes to new orleans, the one bit of good nervous fgs is it takes a northwesterly turn at this point. right now i'll show you the latest whether it comes to hurricane isaac. still a hurricane, you can see the strongest winds are at 830 miles per hour. very, very damaging winds associated with this storm. a category 1 storm. i want to focus on the eye, but as long as it's still over the water, parts of the water get

that fuel. as soon as isaac starts to push all the way over land, it will start to lose energy and hopefully weaken back to tropical storm status. right now that doesn't look like it's the case for at least six to eight hours. you're talking about six to eight hours of 70 to 80-mile-per-hour sustained winds, gusts to 105 miles per hour. we could see some major damage when it comes to widespread power outages. it could be weeks before the power gets back on in the northern plains states. this is what we're looking at. isaac is still going to moouve slowly. it's towards little rock, arkansas. up to chicago by the weekend's end, so this is a well organized system and it will maintain that organize with no searing winds to move this system. we'll keep tracking this for you. also your local forecast looks good today. we want to check on your drive. it's a wednesday. good morning, mike.

>> we have to check on my family. we have some folks in chicago. that may affect them, that track. meanwhile in the east, we're following this. your connector on the san mateo bridge over the water. we look over on the right-hand side. that one set of lights is halfway up the section. folks are moving over to the left. the activity looks like it's on the shoulder but p blocking part of the slowing. it wasn't appearing so i called the reports myself. the flow across the bridge itself is smooth once you pass it pass the follow plaza. slowing through the tri-valley, livermore and pleasanton on schedule here. we'll show you the south bay and volume building for 101. that's why we see the slowing. we're moving on to decision 2012. republican national convention marches on today. paul ryan heads to the convention tonight. he will accept the party's nomination. last night mitt romney's wife, ann, took the stage.

this is "today in the bay." welcome back, everybody, on a wednesday morning. a live look outside of the bay bridge toll plaza. filling up out there. a nice day outside. >> if you happen to be waking up, here's a quick check of the day's top stories. fire crews in the south bay keeping a close eye on the remains of an overnight fire at a san jose nursery. they tell us things got complicated when the fertilizer startsed to go up in flames. a san francisco neighborhood still evacuated this morning because of a water main break in yesterday. that water is back on in visitation valley this morning, but there's p this no word yet on when the power will be restored. hurricane isaac has knocked power out this morning.

>> back here closer to home parting of a popular yosemite popular camp ground is closed this morning. it's a precaution after a second death from the honta virus. a pennsylvania vittor died this week. this follows the death of a 37-year-old bay area man. yosemite is also seeing e-mails or sends out e-mails to 1700 recent visitors to try and make them aware of the possibility that they could have been exposed. 6:15. mangos could be to blame for a salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 100 people including several in california. the cdc is getting reports of sick consumers in california, washington state and canada. nearly everyone who got sick reported eating mangos from mexico. federal officials say they're still trying to determine how extensive the outbreak is. officials warning consumers not to eat daniella brand mangos.

police offering a reward for any information leading to an arrest in a recent craigslist robbery. a couple who thought they were buying a luxury car yesterday were held up near the side of the road. the victims were driven by the seller to the bank to get cash for the purchase. the seller along with another aclis later pulled out handguns and commanded all the valuables. we're happy to report in the robbery nobody was hurt. fresno police right now applauding a young mother for pulling a shotgun on a burglar. briane rodriguez acted quickly to save her 3-year-old daughter from the grip of the stranger. moments earlier the suspect knocked at her front door. thinking it was a salesman, she ignored it, but minutes later he broke through a rear window and a struggle began. >> i have to save my kid.

that's why they're paid the big bucks. >> this is the nice forecast and christina loren is here. good morning. it takes a great team to put this show on together every morning. looking good out there this morning. we have a great-looking sunrise, and if you're waking up with us and live by the coast and have that oceanfront property, you can see the ocean just about all day long from sunrise to sunset with offshore flow and high pressure in control. so this is looking down over the bay from high atop san bruno mountain. let's show you what we do have in terms of a marine layer formation. very, very weak but thin around san francisco this morning. santa rose ra, nice and comfortable and 50 in navado and 57 in san jose. throughout the day today temperatures are comfortable and warmer than yesterday. you notice that warm-up with a 3 to 5 degree climb, but not going to soar and that's courtesy of an area of low pressure sitting just to the north. really controlling the weather

for the pacific northwest for us and ushering in the flow. we get a westerly flow throughout the day and a nice ocean breeze keeps temperatures from soaring into the triple-digits. we could be much warmer today, though. you want to get to pacifica if you can. fly into half moon bay where temperatures are comfortable as well. 72 degrees, and the big beecher winner as per usual if you want the up sunshine and warm sand, you want to hit santa cruz, 77 degrees out there today. not too shabby in san jose. forecasting the low to mid-80s, 93 for livermore and 72, that's right. you're going to get room temperature weather in the city by the bay today. friday, saturday, sunday, temperatures hover in the mid-80s and they will climb as we should on labor day to 89 degrees. just on track with our seasonal averages. mother nature doing things right this year. 6:19. let's see how we're doing on the roads. here's mike. >> overall the traffic flows

nicely over here through the east shore freeway and down towards the bay bridge toll plaza. we're continuing to follow this activity which has the macarthur boulevard on and off closed because of a police investigation. he's west grand and get towards the bay bridge toll plaza. we're not sure what's going on exactly, but we know this. live pictures out of the pictures we have a few minutes ago in the newsroom. all the activity going on right there as folks get onto or off of the freeway and some sort of police investigation on and off again. that will affect you if that's your on ramp to get to the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll show you what's going on, because the metering lights are on. that's the backup there getting back towards west grand avenue. another live look outside. we'll show you what it's like as well. 880 is picking up the volume but not lowering the speeds and oakland in fremont and across the bay. palo alto looking nice for 101 around university avenue. back to you. >> thanks so much.

request in san jose federal court tuesday following the big win against samsung. hearings in this are going to last until december. i thought for sure we had more news. yes, we do. how to be a genius. let's talk about that for a minute. apple is suffering from a leaked memo. somebody leaked the sales advice you'd see in an apple guide online. it's mostly stuff that from the genius bar. there are a couple suggestions for genius workers this morning. what words not used, what words they should use. always use the word "feel" for instance advises the guide. never use the words "crash" or "bug." never say "hot," because computers don't run hot even when they catch fire. they're just "warm." a few minutes ago we got the latest update on oil prices as well. they continue to fall, as we

the republic national convention is under way. delegates nominated mitt romney and paul ryan as the presidential and vice presidential candidates. tracie potts is live in familiar pa. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. the big event today and it comes way at the end of the day, in fact, at the end of the evening is paul ryan. we will hear him really on this national stage and certainly before this goes for the first time. he's expected to talk a little bit about his background, something we haven't heard him talk about as much. also some of the plans and policies including smaller government. now, the big star was ann romney. she talked about her husband. her aim was to focus on women, and she did that. she talks about mitt romney and how she thinks he will make things better for working moms, women struggling. even if you don't agree with these politics, listen to what she said about him as a person.

better look at all the damage. from what we're told what was summer winds nursery out here is lost this morning. you can get a good look for yourself. it's gutted and charred. you can get a look at some of the smoke that is continuing to rise from the interior, so firefighters are still on the scene searching for hotspots. the fire captain says it seems the fire originated near the electrical box. it caught fire shortly before midnight, at it's height about 65 firefighters were on scene, but they had to wait to actually start fighting the flames because of all the garden supplies inside. >> this was a large volume fire and the colors of the flames are hard to describe. the chemicals in there were adjusting the colors, green, purple, blue flames. you knew there was something atypical burning. they're toxic to the environment. they kill pests, and so our goal was to keep it out of the river.

>> reporter: the captain said that they accomplished that goal. he says the water is safe and clean. residents should rest assured. the district manager is also out here this morning. he said this business started at woolworth's in the '60s, so the store's history makes this reality so tough. >> there's a lot of heart and soul, sweat that has gone through that building. a lot of store managers and a locality of things. a lot of memories. >> reporter: mr. gloria does plan to rebuild and re-open this location, which is one seven summer winds nurseries throughout the bay area. in the meantime his 20 employees here are out of work. we're live in san jose, marla tayes, "today in the bay." police in the east bay hope a new sketch will help them track down a man impersonating a police officer. take a look at the sketch. we don't have the sketch.

police say earlier this month a man resembles the one in this sketch dressed up as a police officer and pulled over a motorist. he handcuffed that victim and sexually assaulted her and took off. if you happen to see this individual or anybody resembling him with information, contact the police department. it is 6:33. engineers are checking for structural damage this morning after a truck plowed into the side of a 7-eleven. look at this. the pickup track made it more than halfway into the store on the 1900 block of bridgeway boulevard. there was a number of people inside at the time. luckily no one was hurt. police say the driver just lost control of the car. no word if that driver has been cited. a massive cleanup and an investigation is under way in san francisco this morning. that's because a water main break in visitation valley sent thousands of gallons of water and dirt pouring into the streets in the schools and into a church. today in the bay is live in

san francisco right now. he has the latest on the cleanup and what the puc is trying to do to fix the problem. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we get a good look inside the hole that encompasses most of the intersection here. look behind me. the hole is 15 to 20 feet deep in some spots. the broken water pipes are exposed, as is the tapped gasoline. there's a lot of work it to be done to get it tobacco to normal. there have been a few developments overnight. water has been restored to homes after midnight, and the latest word from the public utilities commission is crews will work again this morning to restore power to the area. now, this is all the result of a 42-inch water main rupture that happened yesterday morning tearing a 20 x 30 foot hole in the intersection. thousands of gallons flooded the area. more than a dozen homes were affected as well as the school and some neighbors were scrambling to evacuate.

>> i think some of it -- i can make it to work tomorrow and my medicine, my wife's medicine, and some clothes. i don't know what to do after this. >> reporter: the san francisco public utilities commission is hopeful that people can return to their homes sometime today, but the department of building inspections has to first give they are okay. now, the school that was affected by the floodwaters, our lady of the visitation will not be re-opening until september 4th. investigators are going to have to clear out all the debris to get a good look at that ruptured pipe to see what caused it all. live in san francisco, today in the bay. now for the latest on hurricane isaac. it is battering the gulf coast this morning. take another look at the storm on the radar right now. a lot of green affecting the coast from texas all the way to parts of the florida panhandle. it will eventually make its presence felt in arkansas,

centralized on land and water. until it's completely on land, it won't lose its energy force. you can see right now new orleans is in the northeast quadrant of that storm, and that is the most potent quadrant when it comes to a hurricane. we're still expecting tornado watching and warnings to pop up through the morning and they get the worst of it as we speak. we have aftermaths to report as we progress throughout the day. look at the very slow track when it comes to hurricane isaac. as of thursday at 1:00 p.m. it finally develops into an area of low pressure losing some energy. this is take storm that really doesn't have any steering winds, no areas of low pressure out of the west to move it. it will make its way all the way up to chicago as we finish up the weekend. still a lot to it talk about surrounds hurricane isaac. locally, we could not get any better than what we expect today. 70s at the beach and low 90s inland. we'll talk about the full forecast and my seven-day in the

next report. what do we have out there, mike? >> a typical pattern for a wednesday, and that's great news. we have an accident in your commute direction. as you approach altamnte pass road, there's additional slowing into the tri-valley. livermore holds steady but slowing as it builds into pleasanton. 680 showed up on the reports. there may be a small grass fire in the area around highway 84 off of 680. very dry hills there and a fire crew heading out there. give me a shot if you know of anything going on there. for fremont, 880 the volume builds a bit. starting to slow just south of the dunbarton bridge. we have this shot aacross the san mateo bridge. 92 and no delays at the toll plaza and over on the peninsula side. back to you. the time is 6:38.

we continue to follow breaking news this morning. dutch military police still surrounding a plane at an

amsterdam airport. there were reports that it was hijacked. two fighter jets escorted it into the the airport on its way from spain. however, the budget airline that owns the jet says it's just a miscommunication. a spokesperson says the plane approached in an unusual way which led to confusion between the pilot and the control tower. it's 6:42 right now. a new healthy study on the possible risks the flu virus may pose on certain children. the cdc says kids with neurological disorders could make increased complications from the flu. back in 2009 that h 1 n 1 pandem pandemic, 80% that died had a disorder. the most common problem were pneumonia and respiratory distress syndrome. the cdc recommends parents have their children vaccinated. 6:42. coming up, fire crews had a tough time with a nursery fire overnight in san jose.

for you out there starting with this phenomenal sunrise. the sunsets tonight right around 7:45, and this is just beautiful. if you're around your tv set and not looking at it, look at what is greeting you today. this means beautiful, beautiful beach weather ahead. temperatures this morning are nice and comfortable. we're in the 50s. 53 in concord, 52 in oakland, 54 degrees to start in san francisco. as we head through the day today, you want to keep in mind we're getting all that much closer to fall. just about two weeks aaway now, so if you want to hit the beach, you're going to get spoiled with comfortable conditions for today. tomorrow that fog rolls back in. this is what we're talking about. gusty at the coast today for the first part of the day as we have seen over the past couple of days, those winds pick up as we transition between noon and evening. it's the opposite today. we see the strongest winds in the morning and start to die down. santa cruz, 77 degrees. phenomenal conditions there.

you may not see it, but half a block down is a police car sitting on canal street here. we've seen a significant increase in the number of police officers and also members of the national guard in the last 20 minutes, and that's because the sun is up and we can see the damage and where people need help the most. i want to show you some new damage along this street right now. you look behind me and see what windows fell out of that building and came crashing down. this billboard is lose and crooked. it could fall under this wind at any time. you see many signs flying town the street. an update of plaquemines parish, about 90 minutes from here, an area very prone to flooding. earlier water did tip over the levees causing flooding, and now a representative is saying the situation is now worse than during hurricane katrina. they're trying to rescue possibly up to 60 people. the conditions are getting worse in new orleans. reporting live, i'm danielle

of plants and flowers survive the flames. the call came in about 11:45 last night. it quickly became a three-alarm fire. the fire captain was surprised by the shear size of it. it was not a typical firefight because of all the chemicals inside, the fertilizers and pesticides and insecticides were a huge concern. it runs behind the four-acre propt, so the mission was to keep the chemicals away from the water. >> we have materials out here, and they have very intensive testing equipment to ensure that there was nothing in the water supply in the guadalupe river and that the groundwater around is not possibly dangerous. >> reporter: back here live we're told that the standing water even in the parking lot here could be toxic, so hazmat crews work to clean up the parking lot this morning. as for the cause, the fire captain says that it appears that the flames originated right near the electrical box. for now we're live in san jose.

the man accused of kidnapping and murdering sierra lamar won't be in court today. it's expected to be continued because the judge assigned to the case cannot be there. santa clara county sheriff's department arrested him in may. he's accused of kidnapping and killing lamar, a 16-year-old back in march. cleanup continues in san francisco. visitation valley this morning after a massive water break sent thousands of gallons of water into the streets yesterday. "today in the bay" is live in san francisco where two dozen homes are still under an evacuation order. good morning, arturo. >> reporter: we're on top of the hole that encompasses most of the intersection behind me. check it out for yourself. the 3 1/2 foot water main is exposed as is a capped gasoline. this hole is 15 to 20 feet deep in some spots.

this is a good idea how much repair work needs to be done. crews are working this morning to finish restoring power to homes in the area. water to homes has been restored and that happened after midnight. a 22-inch water pipe ruptured yesterday morning at the intersection of cora street and sunnydale avenue. thousands of gallons of water flooded the area. the break created the 20 x 30 foot hole in the road. water flowed down sunnydale avenue and right into our lady of the visitation school. we're back to live pictures here now. a few things have to happen before people are allowed back into homes today. crews have to clear out all the debris and build a temporary road around the hole and the department of buildings and inspections has to give its approval. the school won't re-open until september 4th. an investigation into what caused the rupture is now under way, and we're expects more
