good morning, breaking news, a storm surge from hurricane isaac pushes water over a levee in new orleans. officials fear some people may be trapped in their homes. this as rains continue to fall from louisiana to florida. we're live across the region. heart and hard truth. ann romney and chris christie gave two very different speeches at the republican convention in tampa. >> no one will move heaven and earth like mitt romney to make this country a better place to live. >> our ideas are right for america, and their ideas have failed america.
7:01 am
>> will their words impact voters, and why did christie's speech rub some people the wrong way. and what was the mission? new details coming out about the osama bin laden raid. was there ever any intent to capture him, or was the plan to kill him on sight? we'll have details. from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today." hurricane isaac comes ashore with matt lauer, live in tampa, florida. and savanna guthrie live from studio 1 a. and good morning, welcome to a special edition of "today." it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a wednesday.
7:02 am
matt, amazing to think about it, seven years ago today hurricane katrina was coming on shore. here is the very latest on isaac right now. it remains a category one storm with wind speeds at 75 miles per hour. more than 450,000 people are without power in louisiana alone. >> amajor problem, and al warned us about this, is the storm is moving very, very slowly. even more heavy rain will fall on that region. widespreaded flooding is expected in that area. >> we have reports from across the storm this morning beginning with al roker and jim kcantore.
7:03 am
>> good morning, savanna. jim and i have been taking the brunt of this for awhile. >> yes, we have winds here that at at 93 miles per hour. and you see they're up high 30 stories where you add a category. we've been in this a dozen hours now. >> that's right, unfortunately, also taking a beating, people are trapped in their homes. there's a lot of flooding. people who were supposed to evacuate and haven't. so we're seeing a problem there. >> the storm center is is 35 miles south of new orleans, but we could be in the rain bans for 20 or 24 hours. >> yes, this thing is moving
7:04 am
slowly and we have warnings up. when you have any kind of a storm -- >> another issue, the storm surge. >> i don't know about this band on wind, but this is brutal right here. the storm surge is awful. we see in the panhandle, mississippi, u.s. 90 is closed. >> baton rouge. >> there may be salt water contaminati contamination. >> that's right, they were worried they would lose their fresh water source because of that incursion of the salt water. >> err we're going to be in this for another at least 12 to 14 hours. >> want you guys to stay safe as
7:05 am
you cover the storm. we want to get back to that store in plaquemines parish where the water has gone over the levee. >> the conditions have been deteriorating here for the past few hours. as you see behind me, emergency responders here and the national guard, that is the flood wall. that is the problem area. the other side of that flood wall we're told there is ten feet of water and an entire neighborhood is under water over there right now. it's hard to see, but emergency responders are going out on boats and rescuing dozens of people who have been trapped in their homes. the national guard says they have a plan in place, but the problem they're running into is that the water is so high that
7:06 am
they can't even get under the power lines. right now they're trying to figure out the best way to continue to rescue those people on the other side in the east bank. so far 20 or 30 people have been rescued from their homes. this is a rural parish. we have been told that several of them have v been coming up. we spoke with one of the residents and asked whether her home was okay, and looking on the other side of that wall, it's all destroyed. savanna, back to you. >> in the center of the storm there on the southeastern tip of louisiana. the impact of this storm is being felt across the southeast. janet is east of new orleans, good morning to you. >> reporter: i have to tell you, the wind has picked up significantly here. so much so that rain, it feels like nails pounding into my
7:07 am
back. we have tropical force winds here and look what it's done to this usually calm marina. it looks like an angry ocean. the sailboat has slammed into a fence. if you can stay with me, let's take a look at this children's playground is under water, and they're telling us that we're still not at high tide. we would see the water rise from the storm surge here another four feet or so. as we go, just take a look at the debris watching up here on the shore pounding at this time. debris is flying through the air, and we're going to see several more hours of this. so the worse is potentially yet to come. a mandatory evacuation order is in effect, but we believe many people have not heeded it and
7:08 am
are staying in their homes at this time. it's looking like a far more serious situation than they envisioned yesterday. >> i know we were expecting a ton of rain, it's slow moving, but one thing you said earlier is you're feeling a lot more wind than was forecasted. >> right. last night we had 30 to 35 miles per hour sustained winds. overnight, 70 and 80 miles per hour. and even within the last two to three hours from sun up until now, it's gotten worse, and we're not quite at the high tide. they're telling me we'll have to move soon because the water will cover the road here. and i'm just off u.s. 90. >> i think we may have lost janet and her signal. we want to go back to new orleans where lester holt is
7:09 am
riding out the storm. >> savanna, conditions are getting a little easier. i have a big passenger terminal here at the port giving a little wind protection. you see us out here getting knocked around, and it makes a point because when we were hearing tropical storm or category one, you would hear the word only a category one as if that was something simple. it's not. the point is these are very, very dangerous storms. this is why the mayor here is telling people don't get caught off guard or late your guard down because it will be with us for awhile. it will be calm and then it will hit you again. we checked with officials, the levees and the flood system they've upgraded since katrina seem to all be working. they have a lot of localized flooding, streets watched out, transformer expotions, trees
7:10 am
down, a report of a house collapse here. no reports of casualties. some limited police, they're in hunger down mode waiting for an opportunity to get out. it's very difficult to travel around this city. all eyes on that water and flood protection system. just a little more about the situation in southeast louisiana, they were getting flooding in areas they didn't get in katrina and also in some of the areas they thought were prepgted protected by levees. i was at the command center the other day, they were doing the math, trying to figure out with the water would rise above the levees, the answer -- >> i think we're starting to lose lester holt. we want to give you a view of

7:13 am
>> in a this pool, ann romney aimed to close the gender gap. moms have to work harder to make things right. moms, single, married, or widows maybe it better. >> her speech was sealed with a kiss. but the night was not over. chris christie's keynote address took the fight to the democrats. >> i know this simple truth, and i'm not afraid to say it, our ideas are right for america and their ideas have failed america. >> in his first reference to mitt romney didn't come until well after the midpoint of his address. we have a nominee that will tell us the truth with conviction, and now he has a running mate that will do the same. we have mitt romney and congressman paul ryan, and we need to make them the president and the vice president of the united states. >> the buzz that was many of his lines seemed to point at his own future presidential run.

the issue is a matter for the court and it's been settled for some time in the courts. you called it the most egregious example of a court that weighted into policy making. do you agree that it's been settled in the courts? >> from a legal point of view it's currently the law of the country. from another point of view there is a strong disagreement. there is also a constitutional disagreement -- >> they mentioned there is a gender gap of about ten points, but mitt romney has been chipping away at that. it started about 25 points of an advantage. president obama, it's come down. do you think the abortion problem is going to remain a problem? >> it's an issue that americans
