bizarre. we'll find out what mitt romney's wife ann thought of it. the remnants of isaac are slowly heading north as the people in louisiana mississippi left with widespread flooding. this morning we're learning about more deaths tied to the storm. a live report straight ahead. also today marks the 15th anniversary of the tragic death of princess diana. coming up, we'll go to buckingham palace to show how her legacy is living on. outside a live concert on the plaza from grammy winner jason mraz. nbc's peter alexander is in lakeland, florida, this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the romney campaign says it's feeling very good after mitt romney's acceptance speech last night, his first national television audience. as one adviser put it, he knocked it out of the park.

they're planning to have a celebration a short time from now, a farewell rally rolling out their new plane. you see it behind me. that's the one mitt romney will get on. it reads "believe in america." last night he encouraged people to consider whether their lives are better now than four years ago and not to feel guilty forgiving up on president obama. mitt romney claiming his place atop the republican party. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> reporter: speaking to struggling americans he accused the president of setting lofty goals but failing to make real progress fixing the nation's economy. >> president obama made the promise to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. my promise is to help you and your family. >> reporter: romney argued where president obama failed he will succeed because of his private sector experience.

stops in several battleground states in ohio, virginia, right back here in florida. savannah. >> peter alexander. thank you. mitt romney's wife ann is with us. mrs. romney, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> last night was the make or break moment for your husband. so how did he feel? did he come back and high five you, was he excited or just huge amounts of relief? >> well no, it was a great moment. it was just wonderful. for me, the best thing is having my sons around me. my beautiful daughters-in-law. those grandchildren. we all had a great time. we almost lost some of the children in the balloon drop, however. that was -- they've never -- i don't think they've ever had more fun. >> at a couple of points, i'm sure you noticed his voice broke. he seemed to get emotional. here is somebody who has seemed to be defiant about not wanting to openly emote for the benefit of the campaign. there he was pretty choked up did that surprise you?

>> no. this is how i see him. this is the emotional part of him i know so well. this is the side of him in the deepest part of his soul. i also think that my son craig spoke earlier in the evening. he choked up at well. later craig came home and he said boy, i felt like mitt's father, his grandfather, was standing next to him that night. i'm sure mitt was having some of the same feelings as well. this has been an emotional journey for our family. we always feel like we stand on the shoulders of those that have gone before. i'm sure for mitt he was thinking about his dad and his mom, and i'm sure the emotion overtook him there. >> before i go further, i have to ask you about clint eastwood's performance last night. a nice way of saying it, it was unorthodox for a political convention. be honest, did that go exactly

as you all had planned? >> i don't think anyone can go the way clint eastwood wants it to go. we were just thrilled, frankly i was thrilled for his support. >> one thing that was abundantly clear from your speech and your husband's speech, this is a campaign that desperately wants to woo women's voters. there was a point in your speech where you came out and declared, i love you women. can you name a specific policy that your husband is advocating that you consider to be a pro women's policy. not just the general policy you think may benefit women as well as men, but something specific? >> you know, the thing that is the most specific thing. this is what women care about, is making sure their future is secure for their children. if you -- this is going to be an economic election, and when i hear from women is that they are concerned not about -- just about their jobs, their husband's jobs, their children's jobs, everything else, but concerned about the future as well. i think that they know a lot of

hurricane isaac are dumping heavy rain on arkansas, missouri and illinois this morning, this as the gulf coast deals with the aftermath of the slow-moving storm. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in slidell, louisiana. gabe, good morning. >> good morning, lester. overnight we learned sheriff's deputies in nearby plaquemines parish found two people dead in a home that was under water. officials fear they could find more. >> it won't stop. it keeps raining. >> reporter: whether seen by land, boat or in the air, the scene is grim. large parts of the gulf coast under water. >> water came up so fast. >> reporter: hurricane isaac's slog through louisiana, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in spots. >> it's as high as it's ever been ever. >> reporter: outside new orleans in slidell, a pumping station overflowed spilling up to six feet of water into homes.

police officers rescued around 150 people who had been trapped as well as a few shivering pets. >> how is he doing? >> he's scared to death. he's scared. they'll be all right. >> reporter: elsewhere in louisiana, even the cows had trouble finding higher ground so they literally came home seeking refuge. in la platte a flood of emotions. >> it's sad and hard to see that but it covered the entire sections of st. johns parish. all you can see is water. >> reporter: in plaquemines parish, state officials breached this levee on purpose to release pleasure on flood walls while in mississippi officials are planning a controlled breach of the dam today. the safety engineers there say they have no imminent fear it will break. louisiana officials weren't taking any chances, urging tens

of thousands of people downdream to evacuate. across the gulf coast there have been heroic efforts to rescue those left behind. >> four feet off the ground, our house is. >> reporter: the national guard helped this world war ii veteran and his wife to safety. a helping hand after isaac. here in slidell, the floodwaters are receding rapidly. lester, about 40% of louisiana is still without power. >> gabe gutierrez this morning, thank you. it's now 7:12. here's savannah. >> thanks. sigh sack is one reason gas prices have soared as we head into the long holiday weekend. tom costello is in bethesda, maryland, with bad news for drivers. tom, good morning to you. >> yeah, savannah. nationally we're paying $3.83 a gallon. that is up $0.10 in a week. here in the d.c. area we're averaging about $4 a gallon but across the country drivers are paying more for gasoline than they ever have going into a

labor day weekend. this is not the news any of us wanted to hear going into the labor day weekend. gas prices have been on the climb this week. in some cities, 10 to 15% increases in a day. that's the biggest jump in 18 months. on this color coded map green shows the lowest prices in the country, red the highest. illinois and california are bright red, both $4.15 a gallon. in los angeles thursday $4.16. >> i remember being a small child and standing in line for 60 cents a gallon gas and going, oh, my gosh, this is so expensive. >> reporter: in chicago $4.41, highest in the country but we found $4.49. >> the first time i think i ever filled my small little car and spent over $50. >> sometimes you have to give up what you enjoy most and put it in your tank, i guess. >> reporter: hurricane isaac gets a lot of the blame for

driving up the prices, as it took aim at louisiana, oil rigs, refineries, a critical pipeline shut down. cnbc's scott kohn is there. >> the good news, it athere's been no damage to the oil rigs offshore or refineries on the east coast. the issue is getting them up and running. the longer that takes, the higher prices can go. >> reporter: also a ruptured pipeline in wisconsin, a refinery fire in california, an expensive summer gasoline blend, it all adds up. >> we've never seen the national average this high for labor day weekend. the gouge is on, if you call it that. >> reporter: aaa calculates if you're driving from denver to chicago in a 2008 toyota van you'll pay $238 in fuel. same vehicle driving from san diego to seattle, about $3.17 in fuel. driving from atlanta to tucson, $400 in fuel. the good news, gas prices aren't expected to stay this high. >> between thanksgiving and

christmas, the national average may drop to the mid $3 range and some areas could drop even lower than that. >> reporter: that's good news. listen, we often see a spike in pump prices this time of the year because we're seeing refineries reduce their inventories from the summer blend and get ready for the winter blend. you throw in a hurricane and you can really cause a jump in prices and that's exactly what we've seen. savannah. >> we have, indeed. tom costello in bethesda, maryland, thank you. want to get a check now of the morning's other top stories. tamron hall in for natalie at the news desk. >> reporter: good morning, lester, savannah, everyone. a former navy s.e.a.l. could face legal action from the pentagon for the firsthand account of the raid that took the life of osama bin laden. correspondent jim miklaszewski has more. good morning. >> good morning. copies of this book are readily available. nbc purchased this one. the pentagon is threatening to file criminal charges against the author and publisher if the book is released as planned next week.

the former navy s.e.a.l. wrote the book under the sued nim mark owen, a makeup artist changed his appearance for an on camera interview with "60 minutes." but that's where the secrets end. the book offers a dramatic firsthand account of the raid that killed osama bin laden with details never before revealed which the pentagon considers classified. in a somewhat threatening letter, the pentagon reminds owen he signed two separate nondisclosure agreements to never divulge classified information and warns the pentagon is considering legal action against him. a senior defense official tells nbc news the book reveals certain tactics and techniques used by the s.e.a.l.s in their assault on bin laden which could put other u.s. forces and operations at risk. there could also be a political element to this as well because the author takes a couple of unflattering shots at president obama and vice president biden.

so far, no public response from either the publisher or author. >> all right. thank you very much. a shooting just before dawn this morning at a supermarket in central new jersey. police confirmed there are fatalities and the gunman is dead. that incident, of course, is under investigation. a shocking new revolution, at a court appearance thursday for colorado shooting suspect james holmes. as his defense attorney said that he attempted to call a university of colorado psychiatrist just nine minutes before the shooting began. his call to a hospital switchboard never reached. her. at the hearing a judge ruled prosecutors could not disprove holmes was a patient of that psychiatrist at the time of the attacks. this poses a major setback in obtaining a notebook holmes sent to dr. finton which reportedly contains a description of the attack. a possible cheating scandal at harvard university has school officials seeing crimson as some 125 undergraduate students are

being investigated for sharing answers or plagiarizing their final take home exam last spring. roughly half of that 250 student class being investigated or questioned after teaching assistant noticed identical wording in some answers and other problems with the test. tennis star andy roddick calling it quit, at the u.s. open here in new york on thursday, his 30th birthday roddick announced he's retiring at the end of this tournament. the formerly number one ranked player in the world said he feels like it's time, but considering his wife is swimsuit and model and actress brooklyn decker, you see her there, you might understand an early retirement. he plays what could be his final match tonight. it is 7:18. savannah, lester, and al, the second most googled topic about andy roddick, his storied tennis career, is his wife. >> i'm not going to touch that. >> did you see the picture? >> this is shocking because?

>> we'll talk to him coming up. >> lester is going to show us what he's got, the gun show out. new details on what led country singer leann rimes to check herself into a treatment facility. >> fifteen years to the day after princess diana's tragic death, we'll show you what her sons are doing to carry on her legacy. we want to begin this half hour with a 23-year prison sentence for a lacrosse player convicted of beating his ex-girlfriend to death. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams is in charlottesville, virginia. pete, good morning. >> lester, good morning to you. the lawyers for george huguely pushed for a much lighter sentence than the jury recommended when it convicted him six months ago. but the judge did what most courts in virginia do and stuck close to the jury's wishes. george huguely was brought to court to hear his lawyer's plea for the judge to cut in half the 26-year sentence recommended by the jury for killing yeardley

love, his on-again, off-again relationship in a stormy relationship. the judge did trim it back but by just three years, a sad end, the chief prosecutor said, for both families. >> all i see is loss. it will be that way forever. >> reporter: yeardley love's body was found two years ago, just two weeks before both of them were due to graduate from university of virginia. after drinking and what he considered fidelity he kicked through her door, wrestled with her, shaking her violently. prosecutors say it was intentional, his lawyer said it was an accident. the jury took middle ground finding him guilty of second degree murder. three students testified they saw him act violently including one lacrosse teammate saying he attacked him in his sleep, upset because he had been intimate with miss love.

hughley addressed the court briefly thanking members of his family for support and told the yeardley love family, quote, sorry for your loss, adding hope you find peace. later the family said in a statement yeardley love's death was an accident with a tragic outcome. his lawyers say they plan to appeal. >> we think george was convicted of a crime inconsistent with the facts and he received a penalty inconsistent with what the evidence would require. >> with credit for the time george huguely has already served in jail and if he gets time off for good behavior, he could be out in 18 years. the family for yeardley love has put out this statement saying we find no joy in others sorrow. we are relieved to put this chapter behind us. >> thanks. lisa bloom is an attorney. good morning. glad to have you on.

>> good morning. >> the jury recommended 26 years, the judge changed to 23, a small difference. why would he do that? >> surprising considering this was a woman beaten to death in a dorm room. most people would expect in america he would get life in prison or the death penalty, especially in a law and order state in virginia. in virginia the jury decides the sentence, 26 years. the judge can depart from that but can only reduce it, can't go up. in addition there are elaborate sentencing guidelines the judge has to follow. it's a work sheet, like doing your taxing. you go down and add up the points and the judge ended up with 23 years. >> in presentencing the judge said many testimony of family, friends, members of the clergy who know hugueley said he was a good person. did that influence the judge at all? >> probably not. judges are used to that. most people who are sentenced for a serious crime can find family members, friends, clergy to come in and say, he's otherwise been a good person.

please show him mercy. i think it was sentencing guidelines. there was lack of a weapon, lack of criminal history and the young age of the defendant. >> the family can say it's an accident. >> the jury saying second degree murder not first degree murder found middle ground. they said there was no premeditation. that would have been first degree murder. that would have been life in prison. >> pete mentioned he could serve 18 years. there's no parole in virginia. this is really kind of a credit if you behave well. >> for good behavior a 15% reduction. prison officials like that. they want to motivate people to behave well. he could get out as a young man and still have a life. >> filed a lawsuit one against the university and one against him. does this impact the case or in a vacuum. >> she will win automatically, all she has to do is prove

damages. the gut wrenching the decision the jury will have to make in that case is what was the value of yeardley love's life. the case against the school will go forward. they will have to show the school is liable, they knew george was a danger, they failed to protect students. that's a hot inquiry, hot area of the law. >> you said you were surprised given a law and order state. was there something different been this case they would do differently in terms of the sentencing. >> we look at what happened, a brutal murder, how can that be 20, 23 years. the law looks at the intent, what was in the mind of the killer. there's a lot of different levels of murder. >> second degree, not premeditat premeditated. >> not premeditated but with reckless regard for human life. that's a serious crime in the country but not first degree murder, more serious than manslaughter or negligent homicide. homicide is a complicated area of the law.

should ask these questions. she doesn't care. >> she's seen everything. please be open. >> let's get to the first question. it says i have eczema on my arms. it's extremely noticeable when i wear shirts. what can i do to make it go away. >> it's common. if you are the suffer remember, it can be embarrassing. let me talk about what eczema is. it's a chronic skin inflammation that causes scaly red patches. it commonly occurs on your arms but can occur anywhere on the body. it tends to flair so it can come and go. we're not clear what causes it. it's a genetic basis from a faulty immune system. there's no cure for it. so we do try to avoid things that can trigger it. >> can you treat it, soothe it. >> first, prevent it. prevent it, avoid things that trigger it like rough fabrics, heat, detergents. if you're someone that wants to treat it and get rid of it. try a hydrocortisone cream for
