outside, it's going to be nicer than 60s we saw yesterday. now the sea breeze strong. no matter where you are waking up to low clouds and even drizzle in a few spots. we'll see during the day today, low clouds peeling back of the coast unlike yesterday, low clouds lingering throughout the day, even inland. temperature wise today, looking warmer. mostly mid to upper 60s for highs yesterday. today you should see mid to upper 70s inland east of 680 by pleasanton, livermore. tomorrow and monday, talking about 80s and maybe mid 90s coming back. big change in our temperatures for the holiday weekend. we'll show you the timing on that. cog up in a few minutes from now. >> a lot of folks relieved to hear that indeed. a week into san jose police chief's redeployment of officers saturation in known gang territory a double shooting near san jose state university before 3:00 this morning in front of a church on third street and san salvador street.

two people were shot in the legs. both are expected to recover. police are looking for two suspects who ran from the scene. police are trying to track down a man sexually assaulted a woman out on a walk sunday. police released this sketch of the suspect. the victim was walking on south ba a basco and parkmore when the man attacked her. investigators believe the suspect's between 35 and 45 years old. hair cut in a flattop. sunday wearing a blue shirt, white paint splatters on it. if you recognize this man call the police department. happening now, the dumbarton bridge is shut down and cal trans crews are nine hours into the weekend's seismic retrofit project. crews are replacing one of the span's expansion jointed to make it more earthquake resistant. that work expected to continue all weekend with the bridge reopening by 5:00 tuesday

morning. if your weekend plans put you in the area, best advice to car pool or use public transit to avoid getting stuck in the expected backup on interstate 880 and highway 101. if you can't avoid getting behind the wheel, drivers in south bay use highway 237 to get across. for those further north, the san mateo bridge is the recommended die tour. a south bay native and war hero received a fitting tribute last night at his alma mater. eight years after his death, pat tillman is still making an impact on leyland high school and, of course, also across the country. "today in the bay" george kit yam ma has more on the classic football game. >> reporter: the leyland high school faithful cheered her on. mary tillman returned to the football field where her son, pat was a star player almost 20 years ago. he went on to play in the nfl nor the arizona cardinals. he became a national hero len he

replaced his football uniform with a u.s. army ranger one in the yaaftermath of the terror kills. killed in a friendly fire incident. his family devastated. >> we're in a place where we can enjoy good memories and not have them be so heavy. sos that a good thing. it's positive. >> reporter: leyland high school has never forgotten tillman's sacrifice. they gave killman's mother a ring with her son's name on it. she participated in the coin toss to kick off the first ever pat tillman legacy classic football game. >> i was very touched. the fact they named the stadium after him, it's all very good. with all of the, you know, sadness and negativity surrounding it all, this is a positive thing. so it makes us all very happy. >> reporter: tillman continues to inspire the football players and students at leyland high. head football coach says it's up to them to carry on his legacy. >> a lot we can teach them about character and determination and

toughness and belief and passion, which is a big word in pat's life, and patriotism and on and on and on. but we want these kids to be themselves. >> reporter: some of tillman's former teammates came back to honor him, saying they wouldn't miss this game for the world. >> being back here, haven't been back here in a while, having everyone around, seeing old teammates, old friends. so you know, just the fact that we're all getting together for pat, it's really nice to do. >> reporter: if pat tillman could see all of this, the tribute, all of the honors, his mother says he would be ecsta c ecstatic. >> he loved leeland, his high school years were really special to him and so i know that he'd be really flattered. >> reporter: george kiriyama "today in the bay." >> cool to see. sometimes lotto millionaires don't come forward right away because they don't want to be in the spotlight. the two people who bought a $52 million ticket did not come forward because they didn't know they'd won. vladimir and marita came forward

in sacramento yesterday. $52 million check could not come at a better time. the couple had been struggling financially. they played the lotto every day because didn't know they were winners until a relative saw them in the store's surveillance video on the news. vladimir went to the lottery's website. >> rolled down the mouse and saw my picture and wake up my wife and she scream at me, what? and then what happened is i said, we're wanted. >> they plan on upgrading from their rented apartment to a home of their own. and they say they plan on remaining low key about it. a young woman in oakland did something other people might not have. she broke up a brawl on the streets of oakland and in the process may have saved two lives. a surveillance camera caught it all. "today in the bay" jodi hernandez caught up with the good samaritan for this story only on nbc bay area.

>> reporter: that good samaritan, a 22-year-old college student, did something not everyone would, she put her life on the line to break up a violent confrontation here in downtown oakland. two people may be alive because of it. >> i feel like the only reason violence is prevalent here because feel people like violences a lawed because no one else is going to step. >> reporter: the 22-year-old could not just sit back and do nothing when she saw a man and his girlfriend in serious trouble on the streets of oakland. this surveillance video shows the couple arguing with a man selling cds. but within minutes, the argument turned physical as a mob attacked the couple. >> they knocked the guy to the ground and started stomping his father head in. and the girl got backhanded with the cds, got a huge gash in her forehead. >> reporter: but what she did next is truly remarkable. as other witnesses simply watched, she ran across the street to the couples' aid.

>> i pushed them apart and said, you need to stop right now, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, i'm here to help. you got what you wanted, you need to stop, don't hurt me i kept on repeating that. >> reporter: and it worked. the crowd took off running as she began helping the convulsing, bleeding man using her hand and her sock to stop the blood flow where the man's skull had been kicked in. >> i couldn't move my hand because if i did, more blood was going to pop off. i can't rip off my shirt i use made sock and shoe, not exactly san taeshgitary but wrapped in towels and stuck under his hid. >> reporter: the video shows the good samaritan with police after the crews aprifrnd the 22-year-old realizes she put herself at risk but would do it again in a heartbeat. >> i really feel like i couldn't go home if that guy died. and his face was very clearly getting stomped in. any second he could have died on

that situation. and i just knew that if i surrounded myself with goodness and went in with good intentions i knew it was going to be okay. >> reporter: the man received serious but nonlife threatening injuries. his girlfriend was also injured. we understand both have been released from the hospital. police have yet to make any arrests in the case. they're asking witnesses to come forward. in oakland, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> good for her. college football season officially under way in the bay area. coming up on "today in the bay," preview of the cal bears' new stadium. not just the play, also the menu. plus -- an emotional rally at penn state as students cheer on the football team in the wake of a devastating scandal. what they're saying about their school's future. and a big night for the little league from petaluma. we followed along as they warmed up with the oakland a's, coming up next.

good morning. san francisco, here's how you are waking up with some cloud cover and some fog, chilly temperatures that will get better as we get closer to labor day. fans of cal football wi christen their new stadium. penn state giving the football team a warm welcome as they prepare for the first game of the season today. last night's pep rally carried extra weight as the school emerges from the shadow of the sex abuse scandal surrounding former football coach jerry sandusky. students say their spirit is not broken and looking forward to rebuilding their school. penn state plays ohio university today. back to cal, fans of cal football will christen their new stadium as the bears open the season. first time in two years the bears play at home. now, fans will get to enjoy new

high-def jumbo tvs and scoreboards, new rest rooms and concessions. cal bears take the field at noon against nevada. we'll have to see what fans have to say. let's be honest, a lot of cal fans excited to see what kind of food they can buy at the new stadium. new items include vegetarian tempura rolls, humus and pretzels and portabella musharraf roll sandwiches. fans can buy the favorites, hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn as well. 49ers fans also have a chance to get a sneak peek into the team house. the san francisco recreation and park department set up a guided tour for people who want to find out more about candlestick park stadium. the tour will take a behind the scenes look at team locker rooms, luxury suites and offer the chance to run on the feel. tours are tours are offered monday through saturday. future of candlestick park is uncertain as 49ers set to move into their new santa clara

good morning. looking live at san rafael. it was so chilly yesterday, i had to make a pot of chili. not what you expect to have on the last day of august, certainly. well, they might be the two best baseball teams in the bay area. the one team much shorter than the or. last night the petaluma little leaguers rubbed elbows and played catch with the a's. a's game the petaluma little leaguers get a standing ovation. and the thrill of a lifetime. one-on-one time with the pros. >> because it's just awesome to meet the a's pro baseball players. it's pretty cool. >> had the whole team sign the ball. you have a team-signed ball. >> sweet! >> 13-year-old logan douglas hanging out with the a's jonny gomes. gomes is from petaluma, too. he arranged royal treatment for the little leaguer whose placed third in the little league world series. >> it's pretty special. they caught everyone off guard. but i mean, you never know what the talent pool's going to be. and they gave it a great run representing the whole west pretty well. >> reporter: coach smith says the on field visit is a dream come true for a deserving bunch. we get to go on the field we get to go on the field! just to see the players. this is their dream. >> reporter: this was more than a meet and greet. these kids got luxury box seat, time on the big screen and

but we're going to be warming temperatures up slowly but surely through the weekend. another big event cal football back. look at temperatures in the low 60s. this is a noon time start. some drizzle out there this morning. should see cool and breezy conditions into the afternoon. 50s across the board. cloudy skies, mist, finding it no matter where you are around the inner bay and the coast right now. you can see the wind speeds, still a good push of cool air into concord and fairfield. if winds are that strong in the morning and low clouds inland, even as high pressure starts to build in, it's going to take a couple of days before temperatures start to warm up. so clearing skies inland. pass lunch time, 60s to 70s today. that's better than the mostly 60s yesterday. and sunday and monday, much warmer. we're going to finish off labor day weekend with temperatures soaring back into the 80s and 90s especially monday. satellite radar looks calm in terms of monsoon moisture. but we'll have to watch that as we go into monday and tuesday.

what's left the tropical storm elian na, as it starts weaken we could see the moisture over northern baja drift closer to california. winds 50 miles per hour. moving into cooler ocean waters, that's going to take the energy out of the storm. but we'll have to watch the high clouds maybe early next week. right now it's low clouds. the story that will peel back to the coast during the afternoon, sunshine inland. temperatures getting warmer except on the coast. likely you'll see the fog unless you head to santa cruz, that's where you should find 70s for labor day plans. mid 70s around san jose. upper 70s south to morgan hill. pleasanton, danville maybe the warm spots close to 80s. mainly 70s. three day forecast, taking you through the holiday weekend, look at numbers jumping up, we'll get back to summer-like numbers with 80 and 90s inland. monday and tuesday, lit tool hot. livermore and pleasanton, could see mid and upper 90s middle

good morning. look live at san jose. glad to feel it just a little bit warmer than yesterday. and the temperatures will continue going up in time for your labor day plans. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez with meteorologist roby mayeda. people were thinking we wouldn't have a regular labor day. >> we got the clouds that never left yesterday. the sea breeze pretty strong. you can see it there in fairfield and livermore, 10, 20 miles per hour this morning. notice low clouds by lunchtime inland, start to see them break up. our morning model runs looking at temperatures for the afternoon, we're not looking at low to mid 60s around the tri-valley. by noon, we're getting into the mid-60s and eventually look at that, mid to upper 70s. there's improvement for your saturday. by tomorrow and especially by monday, 90s are starting to

creep into the forecast. right through the labor day weekend, we'll walk you through the timing coming up in the full forecast. >> thank you. more than 75,000 people spending the holiday weekend in yosemite national park and officials want to make sure everyone's warned about the recent hantavirus outbreak. the centers for disease control now says as many as 10,000 people who visited yosemite this summer may have been exposed to the virus. the cdc says any camper who stayed in the tent cabins in the curry village between june 10th and august 24th could be at risk of developing the hantavirus in the next six weeks. park rangers have started handing out pamphlets warning visitors about the virus. >> we've really upped our education in our outreach within the last two weeks. >> i've been coming up here all my life and nobody's going to stop me from coming back, not even a little mouse. >> how the virus is carried in the droppings and urine of deer mice, and symptoms initially mimic the flu. so far there have been six

confirmed cases, two people have died, and four others are recovering. a bogus 911 call left a pit bull recovering from a gunshot wound and a 19-year-old facing serious charges. fremont ploifrs s ploif police y man called saying he saw kids leave with bags when police got to the scene, pit bulls tore through the gate and charged at them officers backed away but had to shoot to get the animals to stop. one of the pit bulls was hit in the leg, the other two ran off. police figured out the initial 911 call was a hoax and the person behind them was a 19-year-old fremont man who was posting updates about the police activity on his face book page. a neighbor saw it go down and says that hoax could have cost someone their life. >> someone could have gotten

hurt or anything i don't think that's fair. and he should be arrested for a long time. >> police did arrest that man on charges of making a false police report. and a false 911 call. services for a san jose congregation will be held this weekend, despite the fact their church was damaged by fire this week. the fire started at st. patrick's cathedral thursday. because the main building was so badly damaged, church leaders say they hold mass in the school gym on the property. services will be held today at 4:00 and tomorrow at 10:30 and at noon. and san jose firefighter frank ryan, who collapsed in the fire after suffering a heart attack, remains in the hospital this morning. no doubt that congregation will be praying for him. new this morning, at least 12 people are dead, more than 50 others injured in a suicide bombing near the nato base in eastern afghanistan. nato confirms a number of troops were injured, but no u.s. or coalition troops were killed. a taliban spokesperson claimed

responsibility and said that attack targeted the u.s. base. a suicide bombing outside the same base last year killed five afghans and injured 77 soldiers on the anniversary of the september 11th attacks. damage left behind by a 7.6 magnitude quake off the coast of the philippines. the quake struck friday about 66 miles off the country's eastern coast. buildings and sidewalks cracked and officials reported small landslides. one woman was killed when her house collapsed. a tsunami warning was issued but later canceled. a group of hong kong students is on a three-day hunger strike to protest plans to introduce chinese patriotism classes. parents, students and teachers led several demonstrations over that issue last month. they claim the classes are a platform for chinese propaganda. the government says the classes

will bill national pride. one student called the hunger strike a last resort to make the government respond to their demands. a washington state teacher is under fire this morning after video surfaced of him and several students allegedly bullying a child in his classroom. and now the boy's parents want that teacher to be fired. nbc's drew mickelson has the story. >> reporter: the grainy video makes it look like kids are picking on someone in a dark, secret spot but this happened inside a classroom with a teacher in view of it all. the 13-year-old boy, who we are not naming had his sock put in his mouth and feet written on back in february during what was supposed to be a time for students to improve their reading skills. >> i had no idea. no idea at all. >> reporter: his parents were told their son had been beaten up but they didn't know why he was suddenly scared to go back to class. when they learned students

videotaped the incident on cell phones they asked to see the videos. >> they kept telling us we can't see it because of privacy concerns with other kids. i said, you know, i'm trying to keep my son from committing suicide, what -- what's going on here. >> reporter: they were shocked to see what classmates did to their son but angered to learn the teacher participated. john rosy, wearing yellow shirt, threatened to sit on the boy saying i'm feeling gassy. >> by the way i'm feeling kind of gassy. >> reporter: when their son approaches the teach somewhere picks a fight, admittedly jokingly, the teacher playfully takes him down. the boy's parents admit their son appears to be playing along but they think this was a coping mechanism and regardless, they say this should not have happened in class. >> i think the teacher was just maybe more one of the boys than an educator. >> i was horrified by what i saw. >> reporter: after an internal investigation the peninsula school district put rosy on a

ten-day suspension without pay but the acting superintendent says it was not deemed a fireable offense. >> it's an isolated situation and 18-year career that's horrific and deserves pretty significant reaction fast and that's what we did. >> reporter: the student's parents pulled their son out of the district, in part because they don't think any class with mr. rosy is safe. >> i just don't think that he realizes what he's done. >> and that was drew mickelson reporting. the boy's parents say their son is in counseling now and attends a private high school. as for the teacher, he did not want to comment on the story. in a letter to the district he apologized, admitting that what happened was inappropriate, but he described it as horse play and said he thought everyone was in on the fun. a local football hero has a high school stadium named after him. now you can add his name to a football game. the pat tillman legacy classic kicked off last night at leeland high school. the first home game of every

season will now be named after the war hero who was killed in afghanistan in 2004. tillman was a star football player at leeland high school almost 20 years ago. he went on to play at arizona state and for the arizona cardinals in the nfl. tillman's mother was the guest of honor and received a huge cheer from the crowd. >> he loves leeland. his high school years were special to him. i know he'd be flattered. >> this is just the first in a long line of what they hope will be a tradition. leeland could not pull out the victory in the inaugural game and instead lost to castro valley. $1 billion in damages is apparently not enough for apple. the silicon valley tech giant is going after more samsung products. in a court filing in san jose, apple added four more products it claims infringed on apple pat ents. this is apple's latest move in the global legal battle between the two. the products in question

the heat. happening now the dumbarton bridge shut down for the first full day of caltrans's work. it was shut down at 10:00 last night. looking live at the bridge where crews will spend the weekend working to replace one of the span's expansion joints to make it earthquake resistant. that work is expected to last all within with the bridge reopening 5:00 tuesday. drivers in the area are encouraged to car pool or use public transit to avoid getting stuck in the backup on interstate 880 and highway 101. if you can't ditch your cars drivers in the south bay use 237. those north, san mateo bridge is the recommended detour. drivers are hitting the road labor day weekend despite the increase in gas prices. according to aaa, 33 million americans will hit the roadways traveling 50 miles for the long weekend. travelers are also expected to spend more on their trips. survey found two-thirds of americans say current financial

we are looking live this morning at east san jose. some of the traffic moving along there, hopefully those folks are heading somewhere fun for the holiday weekend. if you have not headed out, peck warmer temperatures here at home. well, it is as if the stars all aligned. a blue moon lit up the sky last night. the same night that -- the same day astronaut neil armstrong was laid to rest. a blue moon the rare occasion two full moons in the same month. the blast blue moon was in 2010, the next one won't happen unt20. following armstrong's death, the family asking the next time you

see the moon smiling down at you, think of neil armstrong and give him a wink. and how cool is it that there was a blue moon just for that occasion? it's very strange coincidence, don't you think, rob? >> we did see a little bit of that last night at times before some of the low clouds kind of spilled on in, like we're seeing now. so we're waking up this morning to misty skies in a few spots. mid to upper 50s, clouds, yes, still that sea breeze out there. west at -- southwest at 14 through fairfield. southwest at 10 into limper more. some of our weather headlines we'll transition here stead steadily through the weekend. we'll tack on more degrees. each of the daytime highs sunday into monday, five to ten degrees of warming through the holiday weekend. we've got a lot of low cloud out there. not much now in the sierra. could see thunder showers south of lake tahoe to yosemite.

speaking of the moon soon moisture. what happens left of the tropical storm, southwest of us right now. winds at 50 miles per hour. the storm is going to hit cooler waters and start to fall apart. but some of the moisture by the end of labor day weekend could be heading into southern california. we'll have to watch the drifts towards the bay area. if it does, notice the humidity's starting to come up and see mountain thunder showers to the bay area. today, we've got the low clouds that will pull back to the coast lean for the afternoon. this will allow inland temperatures to warm up more than yesterday. into the evening, low clouds filling back into the santa clara valley. temperatures around the bay area should see more 70s. even the warmest spots towards east bay and tri-valley, upper 70s, low 80s for today. best bet for that coming, though, later tomorrow. and 60s and 70s inland today. better than the mid-60s for highs we saw yesterday. so turning warmer today. after the morning mist starts to break up inland.

speaking of warming, upper 80s, maybe 90 as early as tomorrow. mid 90s for inland valleys tuesday and wednesday. call it the unofficial end of summer weekend is going to feel like it by the time we get through the end of the holiday weekend. >> when this sort of thing happens it makes it hard to talk about weather with the kidded. why is it winter? it's not winter. is it fall? it's not fall. >> three different clothing changes. >> a mosquito problem on the peninsula. next week parts of los altos and mountain view will begin fogging to prevent the spread of the west nile virus. the ground fogging should start tuesday at 11:00 and is expected to last several hours. crews will be focusing on the area between central expressway highway 85, foothill expressway and north san antonio road. officials say that mosquitoes, adult ones, tested positive for west nile virus in that area earlier this week. so far there have been 44 cases statewide, 2 of which have been

adoption. this is saudi, a camel recently brought into the humane society of north texas. he comes from a loving family, it's just that life in their area is changing from rural to urban and the family thought, that's not place for a camel. >> he's healthy, they had him legally realized it wasn't a good situation for him. so they sought help in finding him a good situation. >> fortunately for saudi he's heading to any new home soon. transferred to an exotic animal sanctuary in east texas where he can be around more of his own kind. coming up, a slightly smaller animal looking for a good home. we'll introduce you to quinten next. y, becky.

lisa is here with quentin a terrier mix who needs a good home. we talk about getting the pets to walk, lose weight because we plump them up. he's got the opposite problem. >> he does have the opposite problem. he's on the thin side. we've been slowly helping him gain weight and in his new home they have to continue that until he reaches a healthier weight than he is now. >> i understand he has the same splurge that olympic gold medalist gabrielle douglas had, mcfufen. >> he does. we went to mickey d's we had an egg mcmuffin waiting for him. he's about a year and a half, 2 years old. he's fully grown. this is as big as he's getting. very playful and active. a great little dog. >> very attentive, too. we saw his eears come straight p watching the robots in the studio move around.
