>> good morning. almost 4:31. look who's back. >> i am back, laura garcia-cannon. that alarm went off early. lots to get to. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey, good morning and abbreviated work week for many. a gorgeous start to the day. 58 in san jose. and it is chilly at the coast this morning with 40s and low 50s. what i can tell you is it's going to be just about as hot this afternoon as it was yesterday. a touch cooler with more fog, then things really change. we'll take you through the full forecast. someone else who has returned from a happy, happy place, disneyland, right? >> the happiest place on earth as long as you count out the crying kids. we're looking at west 80, take you down three lanes for overnight construction, really that's light as far as the flow of traffic so no slowing down over to the merge off of the richmond bridge and the maze.

no overnight construction there. a lot of folks had last night off as well as crews ease back in. we'll show you the san mateo look. crossing 92, no major issues across the bay with the westbound headlights. that was an alternate to the dumbarton bridge. we're going to talk about that and keep you in suspense. the san mateo bridge is moving smoothly. >> a little tease. we'll start off here, a san jose family recovering after a trip to south lake tahoe take as turn. >> it was supposed to be a memorial -- a memorable day of jet skiing became unforgettable for all of the wrong reasons. marla tellez is in our newsroom with the story. >> good morning. officials say the family had never been jet skiing before when they took to the waters of south lake tahoe labor day morning. after 30 minutes on the water all four family members were headed to the hospital. police say parents each hopped on a jet ski after renting it.

the mother carrying their 9-year-old daughter, their 5-year-old son hopped on with his dad. a half hour into the ride about 9:45 monday morning police say the mother's jet ski crossed paths with her husband and that's when everything went wrong. >> they were both doing about 30 miles an hour so they were moving right along. and unfortunately, the father was not able to stop and collided with the other jet ski. and ejected all of the riders in the water. >> lieutenant williams says the 9-year-old girl was air lifted to a hospital where she is being treated for severe leg and foot injuries. the mother and son were taken to a local hospital with moderate leg and head injuries. the father is said to be relatively unhurt. everyone, though, is expected to be okay in the end. police said the couple had no prior experience riding the jet ski. while the owners do their best to explain how to operate the watercraft ultimately the

responsibility lies with the driver. >> marla, thank you. it's 4:33. it's not often we hear this, construction ahead of schedule. that's what's happening here, traffic moving again across the dumbarton bridge, it reopened last night after being shut down during the labor day holiday. caltrans crews replacing a seismic joint on the deck as part of a retrofit program. that joint is there to help better protect it during an earthquake. caltrans originally thought the bridge would be reopened at 5:00 this morning but they got going here and finished the job ten hours ahead of schedule. >> some skill and some luck. luck in that the weather and the work just didn't cause any barriers. >> work will continue on that bridge for the next few months but there will be no more closures. >> time for decision 2012. democratic convention gets under way in charlotte, north carolina today. first lady michelle obama will speak tonight along with the

governor of maryland. san antonio mayor julian castro, the first latino to give an address. following the same spot president obama had in 2004. >> the first lady i'm sure is going to deliver a positive message, governor o'malley and mine is an optimistic message as well. >> paul ryan said the speeches will avoid the key question whether americans are better off than four years ago. democrats say they have the evidence and are prepared to show it. president obama arrives at the convention tomorrow and will accept the nomination for president on thursday. in the meantime, a california democrat is apologizing for comments he made comparing the republicans' election strategy to that of a famous nazi prop a beganist. referring to paul ryan john burton told a reporter they lie and they don't care if people think they lie as long as you lie, joseph goebbels, the big

lie, you keep repeating it. he was the chief of nazi propaganda under hitler. republicans immediately called for an apology. burton, known to be outspoken, issued a statement pointing out he never used the word nazi but also he humbly apologized to any one offended. >> a brush fire ruined the weekend for thousands of campers in southern california still burning out of control. the williams fire scorching more than 4,000 acres since it started sunday afternoon. right now this one is about 5% contained. officials say it could take a week and a half to get it under control. the fire forcing about 1,000 people to evacuate campsites and picnic areas but so far no injuries have been reported. >> closer to home in the east bay, fire crews watching for hot spots after a vegetation fire that scorched about 150 acres. this broke out in the hills

between concord and pittsburg near the naval weapons station. the fire was burning in a rugged area of the county so three air tankers and two helicopters were dispatched to try to help. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. >> parts of los altos and mountain view will begin fogging tonight. it should start tonight at 11:00 and last several hours. crews will focus on the area between central expressway, highway 85, fort hill expressway and north san antonio road. officials say adult mosquitoes tested positive for west nile virus in that area last week. so far this year there have been 44 cases statewide. two of those cases have been fatal. >> time to check back in weather. a nice labor day. christina loren tells us a little fog this morning. >> yeah, and our warm sunny days are numbered at this point. good morning to you. we've got a good looking day shaping up.

if you liked yesterday you'll probably enjoy what we have only taking your temperatures down a couple degrees. the cooling will take place at the coast. it's going to be about as hot as yesterday inland. good morning. we're in the upper 50s, 59. 58 in san jose. 58 to start you out in sunnyvale. your weather headlines tell the story. coastal drizzle. mostly clear inland. this afternoon sunny, a little cooldown but no big cooldown until this weekend. we're going to see numbers drop off by about 10 to 15 degrees from where we started. 93 at 4:00 inland, bayside about 80, and 69 degrees at the coast. now, if you want to hit the beach, maybe you have the day off, we'll talk about which beaches are going to get the best weather. st. paul around the corner. that is visible on the roadways, mike. welcome back. >> thank you. and also even more schools starting their sessions this

week. a lot in the east bay. looking to the south bay, we're looking at smooth flow of traffic. easy drive, no overnight construction, all of these ramps have been open. a live look at 101, the volume of traffic looks pretty good with these headlights under the interchange, pretty much the same for the south bay. so we move along to the east bay trouble spot, sometimes t bay bridge toll plaza, no trouble, no slowing at or to the toll plaza. the north bay, for southbound 101 through san rafael here are the curves at terra linda. all the way down to the richmond/san rafael bridge and across. >> a little scare here. students in san francisco state warned about a chickenpox outbreak. administrators sending out e-mail to students, faculty and staff after two people came down with the contagious virus. >> the risk is in a big community that these two cases

could have transmitted it to others and what we've been trying to do the last few days is take a variety of steps trying to assure these students don't pass the disease on to anybody else. >> that virus is very dangerous to adults. officials say any one who hasn't had chickenpox or vaccinated contact your health provider immediately. >> police cracking down on people using handicap placards to park. starting today the enforcement division will be allowed to issue citations for abuse of those stickers. the change is thanks to a new law allowing both parking enforcement and law enforcement officers to crack down. leaders say illegal use of placards is common in the city. >> 4:40. up next it's on sale, the controversial book on osama bin laden's death hitting stores. why this could land the author behind bars. >> an unsettling trend among

>> a live look over san jose before the sun comes up. christina loren says not as warm as yesterday, another nice day out there. so, post labor day, enjoy it. >> the firsthand account of the raid that killed osama bin laden is set for release today despite threats of legal action from the pentagon. "no easy day" written by one of the navy s.e.a.l.s involved. the book will open as number one bestseller thanks to advanced sales. no easy day even has its share of controversy. the department of defense says it will take legal action against the author for divulging classified information. >> the effects of hurricane isaac still felt through much of the gulf coast and the country. down in mississippi officials had to drain flood water to save a dam.

the earthen dam at quincy state park was in danger of giving way which forced evacuations downstream. workers built a drainage ditch to divert more flood water. oil rigs in the gulf starting to come back to life after the storm, meaning we could soon see relief at the gas pump. the national average per gallon of gas jumping 8 cents but it's finally starting to level off about $3.83 a gallon. >> number of big reports due today are certain to move the markets, the first day of trading for september. a month traditionally the worst of the year for the dow t nasdaq and the s&p 500. let's turn to brighter news like courtney reagan. good morning. >> good morning to you. futures are relatively flat right now as the markets come off a very positive month. august was the third straight positive month for stocks though they did close down last week and as you mentioned, we want to sort of warn investors about

precedents, september usually the worst month of the year for all the three major indices. but there is a ton of data packed into the short week so today we'll get reports on manufacturing and construction spending, later on this week we get a report on productivity, the services sector but it's all topped off by friday's big jobs report. the dow rose 90 friday to 13,090. the nasdaq up 18 to 3066 where things kick off today. the summer movie season, hollywood studios took in an estimated 4.28 billion down 2% from last year's $4.4 billion. attendance fell down 4% from last year to the worst levels since 1993. there were still giant hits like "the avengers" and some break-out films but studio executives say the economy is still a factor as frequent movie going may be much for some families.

the olympics may also have played a role in keeping some home glued to the tv watching real life action sports. back to you. >> thanks so much. 4:47. turns out even the tooth fairy can't escape inflation. a survey finds that kids receive an average of $3 per tooth under their pillows. that's a 15% increase from 2011. some receive as much as $20 per tooth. >> per tooth. >> that's expensive. >> you get rich knocking your teeth out. >> visa plans an app to help parents calculate the going rate. yeah. >> an app for that. >> they say the app is meant to encourage fiscal responsibility. some say it will encourage parents to try to top each other. >> i want to go back to $20 a tooth. >> have a little lunch today.

>> 4:47 now. everything will be shiny including our teeth in this weather. >> oh, yeah, that's right. make sure you've got your glasses ready because that sun is going to be bright right off the bat. you have to wait for the sun at the coast but not long. we've got a very thin marine layer forced to the surface so same deal as yesterday, the thick pockets of fog, areas of drizzle probably until about 9:00 a.m. and then we see the sun come out. you'll be treated to a beautiful sun-shiny day in san francisco. starting at 52, 53 for oakland. 58, good morning to you. high pressure is in control. it's going to keep us warm today. then here's where it gets interesting. we've got tropical moisture from the south as we head through tomorrow. and particularly as we head through thursday we're talking about showers. not refreshing showers that usually come in from an area of low pressure. this is high pressure, monsoonal moisture creeping up from the

south. the potential for thunderstorms is actually in our forecast again as we head through late wednesday, that will be the case for thursday as well. today, the dry heat that we're accustomed to. 95 in livermore, 96 for fairfield. 72, yes, 72 in san francisco. and 85 in san jose. we decrease your temperatures through this weekend, by sunday and monday starting to see more of those 80s becoming more regular so starting to feel more like fall. first official day of fall the 21st of this month. >> 4:49. a new study finds a high level of bullying among teens with forms of autism. researchers in st. louis estimate nearly half of teenagers with an autism spectrum disorder have been victims of bullying. much higher than the 11% of kids in the general population. children who are bullied have a harder time focusing on school, something that's already a battle for autistic kids. the study suggests that schools

should target anti-bullying campaigns toward the most vulnerable especially children that are integrated into regular classes. >> new research reveals higher blood sugar levels may impact the brain even among those who don't have diabetes. studies have shown that type ii diabetes increases the risk of brain shrinking. however, australian scientists say even people with blood sugar levels at the upper end of normal are at risk, these patients were more likely to have a loss of brain volume in the areas linked to memory and cognitive skills. >> there is a study may have you think ing twice. doctors looking at studies and found organic fruits and vegetables may not offer real substantial benefits. while organic foods have lower exposure to pesticides, it's in safety limits. in addition organic foods are no

>> welcome back everybody. a nice look outside san jose, early morning out there. you see clouds in the distance in some bay area cities socked in deep with that fog. we'll tell you more about that. it's 4:53. here's something to ponder on the way to work. the bay area is home to some of the slowest commutes in the country. this according to cnn money, antioch has the third slowest commute with the median drive taking over 36 minutes, 14 on the list, pittsburgh at more than 31 minutes. and novato at number 22, just under 31 minutes.

tracy also making that list, checking in at number 7. i wonder how you figure that out. if you live a long way from work. >> you know who knows it all, mike inouye. >> and i will concur with those numbers. we're looking to the east bay. we have another problem. this is not a problem, a problem spot, westbound 580. usually slow and we see the yellow. not a major issue, down to 60 at the worst. showing the volume starting to increase coming through the tri-valley. overnight we see slowing here on 92, that's between 101 and 280 in the westbound direction. no construction and nothing reported as far as delays but we see slowing right now. 92 over the san mateo bridge. we'll keep an eye on these. hold on this warning, the few lights over to the left side, those are cars across the dumbarton bridge. highway 84 t dumbarton bridge

reopened so it's open in time for this morning's commute and about 9 1/2 hours ahead of schedule. good stuff. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we like good stuff. 4:55. a special flight landed at oakland international airport today. some of the passengers will be three labrador retrievers part of a program through the group dog is my copilot. they go to the san francisco spca in exchange the jackson, wyoming group will take six chihuahuas back. there is a shortage of small dogs to adopt in wyoming. this morning workers will begin dismantling the santa cruz roller coaster known as the hurricane. you see the sign there. not the drink, the roller coaster, laura. making way for a new ride called the undertow. the 50-foot high spinning coaster, that zips around 40 miles per hour. it's being built now in germany and will be shipped over next summer. not to worry, the classic wooden
