i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. back open. ahead of schedule. the dumbarton bridge ready for commuters this morning. caltrans crewsç finished their retrofit work around 7:30 last night. they add add joint that will better protect int an earthquake. crews will continue to work but none of the work will require a closure. good news there. >> we're learning details about what actually led up to a jet ski crash that landed a san jose mother and her children in the hospital. marla tellez is following the story and is in the newsroom. good morning. >> good morning. it was supposed to be a memorable labor day for the kazmi family on the waters of south lake tahoe. instead a day of jet skiing turned unforgettable. police say parents sufian and subia rented a pair of jet skis from the marina, something they had never done. daughter hopped on behind mom

and the son with his father. about 30 minutes in police say subia's jet ski crossed paths with her husband, each going about 30 miles per hour. that's when they crashed and all four were ejected. >> nobody sustained life threatening injuries but they are hurt, particularly the young girl. she was care flighted into reno with severe leg and foot injuries. the little boy and his mother were taken to the local hospital here with some moderate injuries to their legs and head. >> despite the severity of their injuries officials say all are expected to survive. the father is the only one who walked away relatively unhurt. police say each rider was wearing a life jacket other wise these injuries could have been far worse. lake officials say in the open water there is no speed limit for jet skis and in the state of california there is not a licensing law. police say in this case they believe a lack of experience

contributed to the cause of this accident. >> tough lesson to learn. thank you for the update. it's 5:02. oakland police are looking for a group of people responsible for a string of vandalism. an offshoot of occupy oakland smashed buildings and a police vehicle. all according to the oakland tribune. the group was upset the city's pride festival was charging admission. about 50 marchers tried to crash when they couldn't get in they lashed out. so far no arrests. >> hundreds of san francisco workers may be unfairly taking advantage of a program meant for low income residents. a city audit finding almost 500 city workers part of a public assistance program offered by the public utilities commission, this program gives you a $15 discount for households making $46,000 a year or less. the average city worker earns

nearly $93,000 a year. employees taking the discount could be punished and may be ordered to pay back the money. >> starting today drivers who thought they had a free parking pass may want to think twice. police in one bay area city will start cracking down on people using handicapped placards illegally. christie smith with the changes that are coming. >> reporter: good morning. well, it may be tempting for some people but for drivers who use the disabled placard to get an up front spot, say, downtown berkeley or something, and use one of those disabled placards even they don't have a right are going to be in for a surprise because as a crackdown starting here in berkeley, what's happening is parking enforcement officers will join police officers in citing driver who is use those placards fraudulently. a recent change in state law allows them to issue citations for parking abuse. of course this can mean parking

very close to where you want to and often time limits don't apply which can be tempting in places where parking is tight. berkeley's chief said they need protect these parking spaces for legitimate placard holders for people who need them. parking enforcement officers can now also ask for identification and evidence that the placard or plate is legal. if not, that placard could be taken right on the spot with fines up to $1,000. reporting live in berkeley, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:04. first lady michelle obama one of the speakers tonight to the opening night of the democratic national convention. she will meet with various delegations over the course of the week. president obama there to accept his party's nomination thursday, coming up we'll go live to charlotte for a look at the other speakers slated to take the big stage. >> 5:04. fire crews in southern california trying to gain control of a wild fire.

and you're saying as far as the pressure it's not there, this is more fun. what can people expect when they come and see you guys? >> yeah, i mean, it's a lot of fun. this is the other side of gymnastics that people don't see. we are performers, entertainers and there are no judges, just having a good time dancing and throwing big skills. >> maybe you wouldn't be able to maybe attempt in the olympics? >> going to be a lot of different elements to the show and a lot of things you would never see in a competition. i think a lot of people should be expecting to be surprised. it's going to be really crazy, really fun and a different type of nerves. all we're nervous about we want the crowd to be excited and you know, really happy about what we did and not so much pressure of oh, man i got to hit this, i got to compete and do this perfect. it's having fun and getting the crowd into it too. >> when do you start preparing for 2016? >> probably right after this tour's over. we'll be getting back to the

after 30 minutes of riding all four family members were headed to the hospital. parents sufian and subia each hopped on a rented jet ski, each carrying one of their kids, a 9-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. a half hour in police say the mother's jet ski crossed paths with her husband and that's when everything went wrong. at 30 miles per hour the two crashed, all four were ejected. police say the 9-year-old girl was air lifted to a hospital where she is being treated for severe leg and foot injuries. the mother and her son were taken to a local hospital with moderate leg and head injuries. the father is said to be relatively unhurt. police believe a lack of experience is a contributing factor. >> our marina owners do what they are able to pass along good caution to people who are riding these. but ultimately the responsibility rests with the operator and their ability to

control the craft. >> reporter: no citations have been issued and this crash could have been so much worse had they not been wearing a life jacket. each family member was wearing one. i mentioned the father sustained moderate injuries. officials say he has been treated and released. >> that is better news. thank you. it's 5:31. a brush fire that ruined the labor day weekend plans for thousands of campers still burning out of control. the williams fire has scorched more than 4,000 acres since it started sunday. right now it's only about 5% contained and could take another week and a half to get it fully under control. the fire forced people to evacuate over the weekend but no injuries were reported. investigators are working to figure out what caused a 150-acre fire in the east bay. that broke out yesterday in the hills between concord and

pittsburg near the concord naval weapons station. no homes or buildings were destroyed. >> a study may have you thinking twice the next time you reach for that organic apple or bananas. looking at recent studies they found organic fruits and vegetables may after no benefit. they give you lower exposure to pestici pesticides. in addition, organic foods are no more nutritious. >> a parking spot. today police will start cracking down on drivers illegally parking with a handicap placard. what's behind this new effort? good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. for too many people here in berkeley, this is just too tempting to pass up. and that is that he like to take a space up front. especially in downtown berkeley.

a light flow across the bay. astro valley, the westbound direction at the dublin interchange. a slower drive which cleared over to the 680-580 interchange. for san jose things are moving nicely. this is northbound 101 as you head up north of tully we see the volume. the sun's not even up and it's slowing, at least it's well lit. >> we've got about an hour before the sun makes it official arrival. i wanted to start with this live picture over the embarcadero which you can make out. those will be forced to the per fast again. thick pockets of fog are burning off early as well. temperatures are very comfortable, 58 in sunnyvale, 57 in san jose, and 60 degrees to start you out in fairfield.

the department of defense has warned the author will face legal action for divulging classified information. >> the effects of hurricane isaac still being felt. officials had to drain flood water from a reservoir to try to save a dam that was in danger of giving way which forced evacuations downstream. workers have built a drainage ditch trying to divert more flood water. oil rigs in the gulf starting to come back to life after the storm meaning good news may be on the way, possible relief at the gas pump. the national average for a gallon of gas jumping eight cents over the last week. experts say it's starting to level off at $3.83 a gallon. >> the democratic national convention officially starts tonight. president obama will not be there, he's on the campaign trail. but his wife michelle will be.

women's gymnastics team and men's team. we have john horton here. you spend so much time getting ready for london, so much work and saying this next three months is what? >> next three months is going to be pure fun and awesomeness. it's going to be exciting for the gymnasts to perform and for the crowd to watch. >> the difference between performing and competing, how would you equate the two? >> we don't have judges this time. we're going to go out, have a good time and the pressure is off. pressure is on to not mess up in the middle of the big show, we want the crowd to enjoy, get involved. but you know, it's different. there's nothing needs to be too perfect. go out and go crazy and show our other side of our personality. >> you think the people at home or in the stands can detect that? is it obvious or are you trying things maybe you would not dare try in the olympics? >> there's going to be a lot of the things you would never see

in competition, that's what is great about the show. you get to see another side of gymnastics you don't see on tv or in competition. >> is there a level of experimentation, you know, in the preparation for this, maybe trying things that you might try to reveal in 2016? >> there's actually quite a bit of that. we're training for the show for i think two weeks straight, and so we're in there, we're playing around with new skills, what can we do that's got that wow factor behind it. and at the same time we might discover something that we'll use four years from now in rio. >> when do you start training for rio? >> right after tour is done. got to get back into it. >> how do you wrap your head around preparing for something that's 3 1/2, four years out? and you have to really be on it right from the git-go? >> i guess we don't wrap our minds around just because i mean, most of us have had the dream of being olympians since

we want to ask bob which way the beach is so he can show us. that's where the weather will be the best as we head throughout this afternoon. i want to start with this live picture of san jose. kind of a different picture than we had at this time yesterday weefrmt noticing a little bit more cloud cover here, it was a clear start yesterday but we have the clouds. and hence, cooler afternoon by a couple degrees. just about as warm as it was. this is san francisco, you can make out the lights in the distance. the clouds have lowered. you can't make out the embarcadero so the fog at its thickest between now and 8:00 a.m. after that we'll start to see clearing. 52 in san francisco, 58 in sunnyvale and 55 degrees in santa cruz to start. temperatures are going to be warm today. warm tomorrow. and then we fall below our seasonal averages, we get changes on the way courtesy of a ridge of high pressure that's going to pump moisture into the bay area throughout the midsection of the week. so wednesday and thursday in particular, we could get a shower activity. the best chance for showers in

the south bay over the western-facing mountains. great beach weather. this is probably the last day you're going to get 69 degrees in pacifica so head out there and enjoy it. 70 degrees in half moon bay when locals get hot. santa cruz. you can't take that hurricane but if you want to hit the beach, 75 degrees in santa cruz. yesterday was the last day for the hurricane roller coaster. look at the numbers, 85 in san jose, 84 los gatos and 72 degrees at room temperature later on in the city. as we head throughout thursday, showers south, friday nice dry air returns, 85 degrees. flew the weekend temperatures stay comfortable. if you want to make outdoor plans not as great this weekend, but still holding on to the mid-60s and the conditions will continue to deteriorate as we head into fall. fall, yes, lots of kids back on the road with their parents this morning, mike. >> that's right. hey, folks, remember, school

zones. kids are doing fine. 580, a smooth drive. through livermore, things slow down approaching the dublin interchange a. typical pattern now the earlier accident cleared and the earlier unusual slowing. north 680 shows slowing approaching 580 as well. we'll track that. no incidents but we'll watch the dublin interchange as general. about the time we see this burst of traffic heading here. 680 south through sunol moves through 101. san jose, right at the interchange, 101 picks up the volume and the slowing north of that 680/280 interchange on the top of your screen. slow from tully up and elm rock and clearing by the time you get to the airport. the traffic here. and then we catch up through palo alto. 101 moves along the peninsula again a good volume of traffic for 101 but no major slowing. the volume is the issue here. the dumbarton bridge, a live look, the toll plaza, well, it's open, the bridge is open. opened early late last night.
