christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you. yeah, half way through the workweek at this point. and we've got interesting changes ahead in the weather department. we were talking about thunderstorms today and not just in the south bay as we were originally thinking. we'll let you know if thunderstorms could roll over your rooftop later on. we've got a good-looking forecast, though, temperature-wise, stay tuned for that. 4:31, first want to check your drive. >> we'll take you for a wider look at the maze and an easy flow of traffic. pointing at a couple of road crews, that's all that's going on for the chp right now. the caldecott tunnel, we have a crew there and minor slowing as you lose a lane. that does not affect the flow of traffic. between 980 and that construction symbol just around the coliseum, northbound side loses a couple of lanes, southbound south of 980. and on the peninsula side, 101 with a smooth, easy drive

through palo alto. and we'll show you some more, spots around the bay coming up. >> thank you very much, mike. a chp officer clinging to life after what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop. he was shot after being pull -- pulling over a black jeep wrangler on interstate 680 in alamo yesterday morning. we have an audio clip from the chp dispatch moments after that shooting. >> description of the suspect, suspect or anything like that. >> negative, he just said officer was down. i've been trying to call him. no response yet. >> it was a very calm exchange between the dispatcher and another officer racing to the scene. a backup officer was already there and fired at the suspect hitting him several times. that suspect later died. investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. >> as far as that, the timing, we're still looking at that. i'm not going to release any details.

that's part of our investigation. we do have some dash cam video that we're going to analyze to see exactly what happened. >> police think the shooter actually acted alone. well, we can also tell you the injured officer is a father of four. 37-year-old youngstrum is a veteran of the chp, and many of his family members flew in from california to be there by his side. the family at this point just overwhelmed by all of the show of support. from law enforcement and from the community. he says this one is a heartbreaking situation. >> a super individual, a man of faith, and support, encouragement, and to those around him and his family members. >> he is based out of the martinez office. he served in the u.s. army reserves before joining the chp. and we will have much more coming up on the officer in a live report throughout the

morning. police are holding a conference hours from now to address sunday's deadly shooting of a man who they say pulled a gun on officers. this is the gun the pd says he pulled from his waistband before being shot and killed by officers. they say romero was a gang member and on a felony probation for carrying a concealed weapon with a prior conviction. he was shot sunday in front of his home. family members dispute the officers' report. we have good news this morning about the san jose firefighter who suffered a heart attack on the job. we have learned he is awake and talking after days in a medically-induced coma. frank ryan collapsed while battling a firefighter at a church last week. ryan's best friend and fellow firefighter russ davis says ryan is not only speaking, but he also answering questions in his usual frank style with a little humor. >> i go who drives engine one, and he goes frickin dale.

and that's when i walked in and said, yeah, it's frank. >> the good news is, some laughter about this. doctors will reevaluate ryan today trying to determine if he'll be upgraded from critical to serious condition. volunteers, friends, and family of missing teenager sierra lamar will hold a vigil tonight. it's been nearly six months since sierra disappeared on her way to school. tonight's light the night vigil will start at 8:00 at the morgan city hall. guests will light candles and pray for the teenager's return home. l.e.d. votive candles will be on sale today at burnett elementary in morgan hill. proceeds will go to the sierra search fund. coming up at 5:00 and 6:00, we'll be live where we'll learn more about a new tactic in the search for the missing teenager. u.s. representative of san jose will visit the search site today as volunteers gather. the man suspected of taking

sierra, 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres was arrested and charged with murder, but sierra's body has never been found. he's due back in court on september 26th. 4:36 right now. police right now hoping someone will help locate a missing woman who disappeared. the 35-year-old last seen on august 9th. employees at one store remember seeing her wearing an orange dress, saying she came in alone. detectives eventually found her bag containing a cell phone and wallet at another store. her car was later found in the parking lot in santana rowe. they have been tracking her atm and credit cards when she disappeared. when she did not show up for work the next day, her family called police. >> she hasn't been with anybody. this is a confusing case as to why she hasn't made contact with her family. >> she stands 5'6", weighs about

135 pounds, she has a visible gap between her front teeth. because she left rockland on her own, police at this point are treating this one as a missing persons case. the legal drama could soon be over for uc davis and students in the center of the infamous pepper spray incident. lawyers for the students and university have reached a settlement. the uc board of regents is expected to consider the deal next week. 21 people filed suit after that incident you see on your screen. campus police dousing them with pepper spray during a protest last fall. the officer at the center of that case was fired. 4:37 right now. and we all know that september in the bay area can be a little cool. but what we don't expect are thunderstorms, is that what you're telling us? >> i'm talking about thunderstorms and showers. good morning to you. finally something to talk about

of interest in the weather department. it's been so nice. there's only so many ways you can say it's going to be beautiful today across the bay area. and today i can tell you it's going to be nice with the exception of a few isolated thunderstorms. 50 degrees in sunnyvale. good morning to you in livermore, 57 this morning. it all works out like this. as you're picking out your wardrobe, trying to get ready, you can leave the umbrella at home. what i can tell you, it's going to be muggy today. especially in the south bay, two competing systems, high pressure pumping it into the bay area. so today, we could see some isolated activity as of 11:00 a.m. when we meet back here for the midday broadcast. a more likely chance as we head through your thursday. and we're talking about showers on the radar tomorrow morning as you make your way to work. you might want to already plan ahead on giving yourself a little extra time tomorrow for those showers. today, it's the fog that could slow you down at the coast. 68 degrees in san francisco, full deck and clouds until about noon in the city. the temperatures are still going to be nice.

78 degrees in oakland, 83 in san jose. and your full forecast. we'll show you that future track when it comes to showers, who's going to get them and when coming up. first want to check your drive. here's mike. >> no accidents as far as the incidents on the chp blotter. 680 through danville, san ramon valley basically north from sycamore valley road up to the southbound side, the same stretch, you lose one or two lanes at their worst as you see from this map. no slowing through the area. alamo all the way down through san ramon, a slow drive for 680 south of that 24 interchange. 580, not any slowing out of the altamont pass yet. a smooth drive in both directions, that yellow blip just around 60 because of a light volume of traffic. the averages are kind of low right now. down into the south bay, smooth drive, 237, 101, 280 not a problem. we'll give you a live look at the volume as we northbound on 101 just north of that 180, 280

interchange. another live look to the north bay this time and we'll look at southbound 101, taillights on the right side away from us, just a few northbound lights coming up toward the curves, san rafael, and novato. a family plans to sue american airlines claiming they were denied boarding their flight to california because their 16-year-old son has down syndrome. joan and robert were supposed to fly on sunday. they even paid the difference so their son who is an experienced flier could travel in first class. but the family was never allowed on the flight. they were told their son was a flight risk. this morning, the airline confirms it never received a single complaint about his behavior from other passengers. the family was eventually rebooked on a united airlines flight. they were put in the last row and tells us no passengers were allowed to sit within two rows of them. the time now is 4:40. and we can tell you this,

welcome back, everybody. on this wednesday morning. give you a live look at the san mateo bridge. looks like things are fairly smooth. mike inouye will be on the way to tell you about it. talking a little facebook this morning, jon. shares of the menlo park stock got a boost yesterday after mark zuckerberg announced he will not sell his shares for nearly a year.

it all comes after the menlo park-based company has already seen a steady slide in the stock price since its ipo. also from the tech world, apple now the subject of a password scare. hackers claiming they have access to unique i.d. numbers and other sensitive information of 12 million apple products. the hackers claim they stole the information from the laptop of an fbi agent. apple not commenting at this point, but the bureau says there's no evidence indicating an fbi laptop was compromised or that the fbi had the apple information in the first place. meantime, there's a little hint about what's coming next from apple. it's probably talking about a smartphone. look at the release here. this was just to a few select reporters. this one confirms the apple event on september 12th. and you see that shadow there, yeah, if you look closely, it's kind of not so subtle. you can see that five there. many believe that's the hint

they'll be unveiling the new iphone 5. our tech reporter will be all over that attending it all week long and scott mcgrew will be along to talk about it. it is not the iphone, but a new smartphone hitting the market today. for details on that and the rest of our news before the bell, let's call on hampton pearson. good morning, hampton. >> hi, laura. well, we start, first of all, the futures are lower after a mixed session on tuesday. the dow fell on a report showing a decline in u.s. manufacturing output last month, the nasdaq rose on more speculation about what you were just talking about, apple's new iphone, which is expected next week. fedex could weigh on the markets today. warns the weak global economy is cutting into the profit. we get data this morning on productivity and labor costs, the dow falling 54 points on tuesday to close at 13,035. the nasdaq closing up eight.

us a mixed bag. good morning to you. it's wednesday, if you had to work on monday, yeah, labor day, we tip our hats to you. abbreviated workweek for many and temperatures are going to be comfortable today. what i can tell you is we've got some thunderstorms on the way to the bay area and you'll probably notice right off the bat when you walk out your front door, it's kind of stickyicy out there. a little bit on the muggy side. as we head throughout the day, we've got an interesting set-up. the weather is going to impact us, the monsoonal flow. good morning to you, 57 in livermore, and 58 degrees in san jose. so taking a look at what we're expecting today. high pressure brings up that subtropical moisture. the remnants of what was once tropical storm john. john's going to be moving in today in a big way. thunderstorms as we head throughout this afternoon. but mostly over the western facing slopes surrounding the south bay. santa cruz mountains might see a little activity. this is how it works out.
