thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning. happening now, the hunt is on for a bay area man police say abducted his two children, then stole a boat and they all sailed away. christie smith is live in alameda where police think that they may be headed and what they are doing to try to track them down. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. they may in fact be heading for international waters. what i can tell you that investigators are asking for the public's help. of course they are looking for the stolen boat trk father and children. they say that on tuesday christopher maffei came here to where we are, harbor in alameda and took off in a sail boat. that is a white hunter 41, blue canvas called "the unleashed" hull hun41366 c 707. police believe the father took his children from their mother's home, then drove to alameda in a

rental car a white ford fusion, ditched it and got on the boat at the club nautique harbor. it's believed that they could be heading to mexico or possibly even thailand we're told the coast guard, san francisco police and alameda police all involved. so again, they are 43-year-old christopher maffei, 3-year-old brooklynn maffei wearing a white dress with blue and green design on it. and then 2-year-old devin, he was in a short sleeved sponge bob square pants shirt and diaper. if you have information you are asked to call south san francisco police. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 6:02. a new search is under way for a missing man from lafayette. brett olson disappeared over the weekend, the labor day weekend that is, during an inner tube trip down the sacramento river. his friends have launched a facebook page called let's bring brett home. this page has close to 66,000

followers in 48 hours. twitter has been abuzz with people tweeting and retweeting. the #find brett olson. behind the tweets from howie mandel to miley cyrus. family friends say they are very grateful for all of the publicity, olson is getting on line and they hope that the efforts will pay off big time. >> new this morning, two people are dead in vallejo and police looking for the suspects who shot them. police found the victims in a home on atherton street mere magazine street and i-80. police say the 31-year-old man and 28-year-old woman had been shot. neighbors say they saw two men wearing hoodies running away from the scene moments after hearing the gun shots. no word on a motive. >> one of the men accused of gang raping a 16-year-old richmond girl is now admitting that he did have a role in that crime. emmanuel ortega pleaded guilty to being part of the 2009 attack. this one happened outside a

dance at richmond high school. one of six men charged in this rape case. police say the young girl was punched, kicked, and then she was repeatedly sexually assaulted. ortega is expected to be sentenced on october 19th. >> the teenager charged with vehicular manslaughter for the death of a father and daughter in concord will be in court today. prosecutors deciding to charge 17-year-old david rosen as a minor. rosen is accused of hitting and killing nuri and his daughter as they were riding their bikes. family hoped he would be charged as an adult. >> decision 2012 now. president obama and mitt romney both hit the campaign trail now that both conventions are over. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> last night was a pivotal speech for president obama as he made his case to the american people for a second term.

he certainly thrilled supporters but his goal was far beyond the convention hall. >> if you believe in a country where everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules then i need you to vote this november. >> looking forward the president favors keeping education and green energy programs, keeping medicare like it is, and he had more to say. >> i have and i will. but when governor romney and his friends in congress tell us we can somehow lower our deficits by spending trillions more on new tax breaks for the wealthy, well, what did bill clinton call it, you do the arithmetic. >> the pace will pick up with four debates ahead and election day 59 days away. mitt romney will be in new hampshire today as well, he will attend a rally tonight in

nashua. his campaign will release more than a dozen new television commercials in that state. president obama will give a speech in portsmouth before speaking at the university of iowa. both states are on the short list of key battlegrounds where the candidates hope to sway undecided voters. >> it is 6:06 now. the susan g. komen race for the cure returning to san francisco this weekend but it appears that controversy sparked when the organization refused to fund planned parenthood is having an effect. bob is in the newsroom now with more on this growing story. >> reporter: john, donations for the local chapter of the susan g. komen for the cure action those are down by 65%, registration for this sunday's race for the cure, the largest fund-raiser of this organization local chapter for the year, down 50%. right now we're going out live where you can see another event with this is about to start. that's the susan g. komen three-day a 60-mile walk done by

the national branch. it was a decision by the national branch nine months ago that is hurting the local affiliate. the headquarters announced it would stop funding planned parenthood for breast screening. there was an uproar, hq reversed the decision but the damage was done. we spoke with a national spokeswoman, asked her what do you tell people who are so angry about the decision. >> i tell those individuals that funds from the susan g. komen three-day are so important, our funds go toward national research, large public health outreach programs and locally we also fund and support local community-based and afell yat outreach programs. every 19 seconds someone is still diagnosed with breast cancer and we are here and in it to win this fight. >> the local affiliate is upset because it never supported that decision. it actually spoke out against

the national stance on planned parenthood before they reversed themselves. they are still bearing the brunt. this time last year the bay area branch raised around $212,000 in its fight against breast cancer. right now donations are at around $122,000. by the way, you can still register for sunday's race negotiation to komen.org. >> thank you. >> let's see how the weather is at least for the walk and run. checking in with christina. >> it's hard when you're planning a big event like that because you never know months out how the weather's going to be. does it get better than this? this is san francisco this morning. where's the fog? it's getting pushed offshore by offshore flow. san jose, a spectacular start. completely clear conditions, the sun will rise at 6:45 and we're going to get phenomenal live pictures so stick around. temperatures in the 50s to start, 54 degrees, crisp in the

city. throughout the day today we're not expecting the fog to return until late tonight. we stop the clock at 9:00 a.m. and you can see all the way from santa rosa down the entire peninsula. nice and clear and those clouds stay offshore just about all day long. 7:00 to 9:00 tonight we'll see the low clouds return to san francisco. you're going to see clear conditions, we have good air quality and look at your temperatures. 74 degrees in oakland, 67 in san francisco, and even in the hottest cities across the bay area, only the upper 80s. the giants and dodgers back at it. we'll take to you the forecast. right now we want to look at the drive. >> i want to take folks out to the peninsula for a live look. we have slowing on the maps, we did see a traffic break. for about 90 seconds traffic was held up as they moved the stall we showed you from the center divide at university away to the shoulder, then off of the

accepted his party's nomination in charlotte, north carolina. he will campaign in new hampshire today. >> the susan g. komen 5k race getting under way in corte madera. it appears the controversy sparked nine months ago when the organization refused to fund planned parenthood having an effect. participation is down from last year. >>nearly two years after the deadly pg&e gas pipe line explosion in san bruno survivors say their struggles are far from over. last night they gathered for an emotional screening of a documentary about that deadly day. many survivors sat tensely, sometimes wiping away tears as they watched "trial by fire." bob hensel believes watching the film helped he and others release some of the emotions they have inside. >> probably brought a lot of people back and opened up memories and stuff that people are trying to suppress.

and i just kind of the i can face it head on. >> many victims of the blast say they are still dealing with insurance reimbursements and a lawsuit against pg&e. >> east palo alto police that the hour searching for two men who robbed a couple in a bold home invasion. this happened wednesday afternoon near highway 101. police say two masked men followed the couple into the home and forced them to lay on the ground. the suspects spent a half hour ransacking the house before making off with cash, jewelry and a computer. the good news is nobody was hurt. >> the attorney in the discrimination lawsuit filed against in-n-out burgers hope more will come forward in support. the class action suit filed this week on behalf of two african-american men over 40 who were denied employment by in-n-out. their attorney says both his clients qualified for the jobs and he believes he has a solid

case against the popular burger chain. >> we believe their story isn't necessarily an outliar, a much more larger systematic practice that the company is engaging in. >> in response, arnie winesinger, the vice president, and general counsel, is quoted saying, we hire from our local communities and our restaurants reflect the demographics of that community. the company will aggressively defend itself against these baseless and irresponsible allegations, unquote. in-n-out is seen as attractive work option because they pay entry level employees more than minimum wage. >> turns outpractical joke is the reason a u.s. airways flight was grounded. it was on the way from philadelphia to dallas/ft. worth, it was forced to turn around and land in philadelphia because police got a call someone was trying to smuggle something to texas. the caller could face serious federal charges but there's more to this.

check it out. that man eventually got to dallas but then police arrested him on warrants not connected to that hoax. they didn't know he was coming but the press from the incident and the other incidents tipped them off. >> brandon mccarthy is recovering after emergency surgery. he was rushed to the hospital after he was hit in the head by a line drive during wednesday's game. a ct scan showed he had an epidural hemorrhage and skull fracture. he had surgery wednesday night to relieve some of the pressure in his skull. the a's say mccarthy is still in the hospital. >> wish him well. that is a tough one. to football now, the 49ers set to set off their nfl season taking on the green bay packers sunday facing aaron rodgers and the packers at lambeau field. how about the raider, known for the face paint and all that. they like to do it rough. how about this guy.

unemployment rate. >> people will be. i feel you to concentrate on the jobs, gains instead. that's what tells us what's going on. i'm going to suspend that. because politicians on both sides will be concentrating on the unemployment rate. it falls .2%. it's an easier number, analysts point out no president has been re-elected when the unemployment rate is over 8%. this will be problematic for president obama as he deals with these numbers this morning. still over 8%. on a side note, last night's speech several tweeting they liked the president's address but disappointed he didn't unveil new tablets or phones. we have known for some time that the bay area employment picture is far different thanks in part to technology and the technology industry, robert thomas, his

company reported profits last night. you're hiring, so too are many of your competitors. it's a tough market to get engineers. >> yes. absolutely. in the last year we had over 100 people, a lot of those engineers in the next 12 months again add another hundred or so. so in silicon valley i think the job market is really heating up. good talent is getting hard to find. >> we've seen the issues there all of a sudden infrastructure, sexy again, something that you deal with. you've got lots of candidates. >> networks are getting more complicated. everybody has an ipad, iphone, everyone's connected, and as that happens networks get much more complicated, difficult to manage so there is a huge demand for automation tools like ours to make networks simple and easy to operate. >> robert thomas looking for

>> good morning everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with decision 2012. conventions are in the books and the candidates hit the campaign trail again today. >> all of the talk of course is about the august jobs numbers. they came out about an hour ago. tracie potts is live with a look at how this report could actually help or hurt the president moving forward. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, the good news is that the jobs report showed the jobless rate dropped a bit from 8.3 to 8.1%. the bad news 96,000 jobs were created, far less than we need to keep this recovery going and that is something the president is going to have to answer for on the campaign trail. he talked about that yesterday, he talked about that when he was here on stage last night. he talked about jobs, well aware what if the numbers would be

from this row. police wanting the public's help. they are 43-year-old christopher maffei and his daughter 3-year-old brooklynn and 2-year-old son devin. brooklynn had a white dress, devin had on a spoung bob square pants shirt and diaper. police believe that maffei and the children were abducted from the mother's home and drove in a rental car, ditching it here in alameda at club nautique harbor. there was a search, it was believed the boat was spotted but they didn't turn up. the boat is called the unleashed, a white hunter 41 with blue canvas with a hull number hun 41366 c 707. the kids are considered abducted and arrest warrant has been issued for christopher maffei. the worker i spoke with said that they actually rent boats

nuri's family hoped that rosen would be charged as an adult. >> it's reported a third person has died from the hantavirus after visiting yosemite national park this summer, that prompted officials to raise another warning about this potentially deadly disease. the recent death was a west virginia resident who stayed in a tent cabin at the lodge and then camped in the high country. seven more cases are linked to the tent cabins. authorities say as many as 22,000 people may have been exposed to the hantavirus that is double the original estimate. the virus is often transmitted by deer mice and their droppings. the initial signs of the virus, they often mimic the flu. >> time to get a look at the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. looking forward to the weekend. >> yeah, a great looking weekend shaping up. good morning. start with a live beautiful picture that actually tells the weather story of the day. you can see it's completely

clear. you can see the mountains in the distance from the san francisco camera, a rare owe concerns at this time of the morning. other than that you notice the ripples. it's the wind mixing up the atmosphere keeping the fog from settling to the surface. it's an off shore breeze pushing the low clouds back out to sea. look at all of that science in one picture. san jose, the clouds are starting to thin out. we had cloud cover but you can see what's happening, the sun is rising, burning off, those clouds from the top down they are clearing out. throughout the day your temperatures will jump from the 50s into the upper 80s inland. look at the story of the day. no cloud cover at the coast, just about all day long with offshore flow pushing the marine layer back out into the pacific. we're talking spectacular sunshine in pacifica, half moon bay, santa cruz t places that get socked in with low clouds. 80 at noon, your seven-day

this is 280 northbound approaching the 880/17 interchange. it's slow as you approach that at the interchange the maps will show you it's a short section twof 80. that's where the slowdown is. 101, slows from capital jamming down at tully through alum rock past the airport. 101, the volume has spread approaching santa clara into mountain view causing more speeds in the 50s than the 60s here. we'll look over toward foster city. we'll get a look at things moving around getting off the bridge for the san mateo side. 92 moves, it picks up a tad. no problems to the peninsula. a nice view from the peninsula side. look at that. as you approach 101 no slowing. we'll show you what things are like for the bay bridge. the toll plaza here, the backup forming. you can see the lanes moving. you'll find significant slowing after the berkeley curve. and west grand avenue, no accidents for the east shore freeway as we see berkeley and

emeryvil emeryville. >> thank you. 6:48. the search is on this morning for a bay area man after police say he took his two children and sailed away in a stolen boat. christie smith joins us live with more on where police think they are headed and what's being done to find them. >> reporter: i spoke with a worker here who told me that the stolen boat is missing from the second row here. south san francisco police are asking for the public's help finding the missing father and two children. they believe the father, 43-year-old christopher maffei, stole a 40-foot sail boat, the "unleashed." it's a white hunter 41 with blue canvas, investigators believe he took the children from their mother's home in south san francisco on tuesday and drove here to alameda in a rental car and then ditched the car and left in the sail boat. it's believed that he may be heading to mexico or even to

thailand. the coast guard has been notified, south san francisco police and alameda police also involved at this point. christopher is 43 years old, one of the children brooklynn is three, wearing a white dress with blue and green designs on it. devin is 2, had a sponge bob square pants shirt on and a diaper, an arrest warrant has been issued for christopher maffei. the children are considered abducted. >> we have a search to tell you about, this one a missing man from lafayette. brett olson disappeared over the labor day weekend during an inner tube trip down the sacramento river. his friends have launched a facebook page, let's bring brett home. a lot of action, 66,000 followers, twitter has been abuzz with people tweeting and repeating the #find brett olson. star power behind the tweet from

howie mandel and miley cyrus. family and friends say they are very grateful for all of the publicity that olson is getting on line and they do hope that these efforts will pay off. >> two people are dead in vallejo and police are looking for the suspect who shot them. police found the victims in a home on agetherton street. the man and woman had gunshot wounds. neighbors saw two men wearing hoodies running away from the scene moments after hearing the pop. police say the man and woman lived at the home. it's too early to tell whether the couple was targeted. >> this is a disturbing story, one of the men accused of gang raping a 16-year-old girl has admitted to the crime. manuel ortega pledded guilty to being part of the 2009 attack outside a dance at richmond high school. he is one of six being charged in this rape. police say the young girl was punched, kicked and she was repeatedly sexually assaulted.

of the susan g. komen for the cure are down by 65%. registration for the race for the cure, the largest fundaiser, that is down by 50%. another event is about to start. that's the susan g. komen three-day, a 60-mile walk. it was a decision by the national branch nine months ago that is hurting the local captors. in january the headquarters announced it would stop funding planned parenthood because it was under investigation for using government money for abortion. there was an uproar. hq reversed its decision but the damage was done. about an hour and a half ago we spoke with a national spokeswoman for the three-day. we asked what do you tell people who are still angry about that decision. >> i tell those individuals that funds from the susan g. komen three-day are so important. our funds go toward national research, large public health outreach programs and locally we

also fund and support local community based and affiliate outreach programs. every 19 seconds someone is still diagnosed with breast cancer and we are here and in it to win this fight. >> the local affiliate has been upset because it never supported the planned parenthood decision, it spoke out against that stance before the national branch reversed themselves. regardless they are preparing the brunt. to raise around $212,000. right now that number, donations is at around $122,000. you can still register for this sunday's race for the cure, coman sf.org. >> it's 6:55. support for alma mater helped countless students at san jose state. that university will honor phyllis simpkins, she died at 87, being memorialized at 3:00 p.m. at morris daily auditorium. she and her husband pledged
