new this morning, honoring the fallen. thousands all set to show up at a vacaville church to remember a chp officer killed in the line of duty. we'll be there live with what you need to know if you want to attend the event and the major impact the ceremony could have on bay area freeways. i'm damian trujillo live in the newsroom. coming up, the latest on the chaos in the middle east. plus why google says it will not pull that controversial video that's sparking all that turmoil in the middle east. how about a live look outside. that is san francisco with some low-hanging clouds giving it kind of a mysterious look over the city on this thursday, september 13th. this is "today in the bay."

a very good morning to one and all. it is almost 4:31, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. let's get straight to the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. you made it to friday eve. you've got a good-looking day but quite a contrast starting with this live picture of san francisco. very little cloud cover. what we do have is being forced right to the surface so temperatures are crisp this morning. we are going to jump from 59 degrees in san jose toward that 90-degree mark. closer to the triple digits in livermore. we'll take you to your full forecast coming up in just a few moments. we want to check your drive. >> good morning. a light flow of traffic but when we look at the south bay maps we have a couple of issues. right here 280 at 85. south 280 at foothill expressway, an accident clearing there. there should be no more problems in the next five minutes. the connector shows construction at the 85-280 connector as well. further north, 101 right at trimble we do have an accident

that may be blocking two lanes although we don't see any slowing because of the light volume of traffic. this is 101 heading into the area. very few cars so they're able to get by in just two lanes. we'll track that as well and send it back to you. 4:32. we begin with breaking news in san jose where police are investigating what they call a fight that ended with two people stabbed. investigators say this happened just after 2:15 this morning. police arrived to find two men, ages 20 and 21, suffering from multiple stab wounds. they were both rushed to the hospital but so far there's no word on their condition or any suspects. we will continue to follow the story and bring you updates just as soon as we get them. thousands of people including the governor, political dignitaries and law enforcement officers from all across the country are expected to gather in vacaville this morning to pay their final respects to the chp officer

killed in the line of duty. the funeral is at mission church starting at 10:00 this morning. a procession escorting his body from the funeral home to the church will start at 7:30 this morning. youngstrom was shot during a traffic stop last tuesday. he was taken off of life support the following day after his organs were harvested for donation. coming up at 5:00, we will go live to vacaville for more details on today's funeral and the expected impact this will have on several freeways. we'll also be streaming the officer's memorial live on our website, nbcbayarea.com. that will start at 10:00. 4:33. chaos on three fronts in the middle east this morning as the u.s. military begins mobilizing to protect u.s. interests worldwide. while you were sleeping, protesters stormed the u.s. embassy in yemen and now there are new protests in cairo, ejust

a minute -- egypt. nbc bay area's damian trujillo has been tracking the latest updates worldwide and joins us from the newsroom. >> reporter: i just checked the website of the u.s. embassy in yemen. they put out an alert yesterday warning this might happen on the heels of the attacks on the embassies in egypt and libya. they are urging those already there to get out and here's y hundreds of yemeni protesters scaled the walls of the embassy. reports say security guards were overtaken and there are unconfirmed reports of casualties. once inside the compound, protesters tore down the american flag and burned it. the protests come just a day after demonstrators stormed the consulate in benghazi, libya, and killed a u.s. ambassador along with three other people. in reaction to the killings the president ordered 50 elite marines to the region to help

restore order inside u.s. installations in that country and the president sent two warships off the coast of libya. they're equipped with tomahawk cruise missiles. they are waiting for orders. and in cairo, riot police around the embassy there had to fire tear gas at protesters several times to disperse the crowd. they responded with rocks. tuesday night protesters in egypt climbed the u.s. embassy walls and burned the american flag there. another possible problem, egypt is operating under a new government. >> i don't think we would consider them an ally but we don't consider them an enemy. they are a new government that is trying to find its way. >> reporter: we're going to show you, this is a live picture of the streets of cairo. the embassy's website there urges americans to avoid areas of large gatherings, even those labeled as peaceful demonstrations. again, live pictures of the streets of cairo. i've seen this long with the

protesters throwing rocks at riot police. police in return also throwing rocks at the protesters and firing tear gas, as you see there. a very fluid situation. this just in. also the u.s. embassy says its consulate in berlin has been evacuated as a precaution after an employee reported a strange smell coming from an envelope. so a very fluid situation happening at u.s. installations around the world. we will keep you posted. i'm damian trujillo. if things continue to casey late there, the youtube video that sparked the protests is not coming down any time soon. google, which runs youtube, says it will not stop people from watching the 14-minute clip but it is blocking that movie from being shown in libya and egypt. the company says the video fits within their youtube guidelines. we happened to speak with a few area islamic leaders who say while the video is absolutely offensive, they do understand free speech.

meantime a tech analyst believes if google did take it down, that might actually encourage more violence. >> once you allow violence to dictate your behavior, then people will manipulate you through violence. you don't want to create that pattern. >> just who produced that video is still a bit of a mystery. it was posted by a man named sam bacile but many believe it was an alias. yesterday the associated press tracked down the video to a southern california man but he would only say he helped advise the filmmaker. he says he helped with the production logistics and says he and the director describe themselves as coptic christians. they believe there's a history of discrimination and violence in the middle east. meantime actors in the film were stepping up pretty outraged, apologizing, saying they were never told this would be about

the profit mohammed. they also say much of the dialogue was dubbed in post-production. new this morning, an overnight search for what may be a missing hiker in the east bay has been temporarily suspended. the parks district says just before 10:00 last night it received multiple reports of screams for help coming from garin park. crews spent hours searching a ravine but didn't find anything. at first light today the east bay regional parks district will launch a helicopter to again search that area. following an intense and high profile case a retired priest will not be facing perjury charges. the district attorney says there's not enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt father jerry linder per injured himself. he took the trial of william lynch and said he never molested anybody. lynch was on trial for beating the priest up. he said he attacked the priest

because the priest attacked him and his brother while they were children. alameda police are warning everyone to be aware of their surroundings as they hunt for a man accused of multiple armed robberies. the most recent targeted two 14-year-old girls in the south shore center. the man confronted the girls with a handgun and stole one of their cell phones. police think he likely committed two other armed robberies on august 31st when a 16-year-old girl and 29-year-old woman were rocked of their cell phones in separate incidents. police only have a very vague suspect description saying this man is darker skinned, possibly hispanic, 5'5", weighing about 130 pounds. a staggering conclusion. the state controller says his investigation shows the city of hercules misspent $50 million in redevelopment funds. the controller released the

results covering 2005 through 2010. the reports say the spending was a result of self dealing, nepotism and other public trust abuses and points mainly to the city manager who was not identified by name. nelson olivia held the job at the time covered by the audits but has since left. the controller also says a substantial number of documents is missing so the full extent of any wrongdoing is unknown. it is 4:40 right now. of course we both know what today is. it is? >> friday eve. >> it looks like we'll all like the weather. >> i don't know about all of us. if you live in livermore, you may be cursing the weather today. waking up bayside, waking up at the coast, temperatures are going to be perfect. we're talking about 72 degrees, room temperature readings in san francisco today. so we've got a really good-looking day by the coast and by the wbay. temperatures a little above our summer averages, but look at where we're starting in

livermore and concord, 62 degrees. that's an indication of a very hot day ahead. strong high pressure moves in today and that is going to bring your temperatures up substantially so get ready for that. stays hot as we head through your friday and then we get a little cooler as we head through the weekend, but temperatures are going to be close to triple digits for at least 72 hours. yeah, the next three days, highs are looking very, very warm out in the east bay so keep that in mind. this might be the last hurrah to hit the beach. 96 degrees at 4:00 p.m. inland, 85 bayside, 74 at the coast. first we want to check your drive. good morning. folks, we'll take you back to the south bay and give you updates on those two accidents, 280 at foothill and 101 at trimble. both clearing. construction for 85 south through mountain view and at the 280-85 interchange as well in cupertino. no major drama over here. a smooth flow for 101 and 280

4:45. breaking news right now from the peninsula. take a look at this. you're looking at live pictures of a major fire that's burning right now at a prep school in menlo park. now, the fire started just before 4:00 a.m. this is at the beechwood school on terminal avenue in menlo park. you can just see all the smoke billowing into the air. plenty of flames on site right now. of course fire crews are on scene, just as our camera is. beechwood is a private,

nonprofit school of 170 students in kinder prep through eighth grade. again, this fire at beechwood school in menlo park. we will of course continue to get information and bring that to you just as soon as it gets into our newsroom. we don't have word yet on surrounding areas, if this is affecting traffic. of course it's still too early for that. but again, we will stay on the story to bring you the latest information. while on the subject of fighting fires, one of the state's top tax collectors now fighting to block a new fee. board of equalization member george runner wants the state to stop collecting a $150 firefighting fee from rural residents. runner, who is a republican, says that fee is nothing more than a money grab by democratic lawmakers, including governor jerry brown. fee supporters say it's necessary to pay to maintain critical fire protection resources. the newly imposed fee impacts tens of thousands of california residents living in rural and unincorporated areas. 4:46. apple fans get ready.

4:47 right now. the fed wrapping up a two-day critical meeting that could ultimately have a significant impact on all the markets. for details on that and the rest of your news before the bell, we hand it over to seema mody who is live at cnbc world headquarters. >> reporter: very good morning to you. a big day for wall street ahead for us. futures at the moment are flat as investors away the fed's decision on interest rates. keep in mind that many economists don't think that this move will actually help lower unemployment. the fed will also update its economic forecast and ben bernanke holds a news conference this afternoon around 2:00 p.m. we do get data on unemployment filings. the dow did rise 10 points yesterday and the nasdaq up 9 points to close at 3114. in other news we're watching,

banks seized fewer homes last month, although more homeowners received their first foreclosure notices. realty track says the number of foreclosures, auctions rose more than 1% from july but that was down 15% from a year ago. activity rose in 20 states. illinois ranked highest among state foreclosure rates since realtytrak began reporting on notices. and california just to keep in mind was third. back to you. >> okay, seema, thank you very much for the update. we'll check back with you a little later on. just a few minutes ago we showed you that breaking news of that massive fire at school in menlo park. >> we have an offshore flow setting up so it's going to be hot and we are going to see those dry northerly winds as we head throughout the day today. that will be the case all the way through saturday so keep that in mind. a lot of people have intentions

of going camping this weekend. as it is one of the final weekends of the summer. if that's you, hey, make sure you get that fire completely extinguished before you leave. let's take a live look here. this is san francisco. what i meanted to show you was the fog is coming in and out. what i wanted to show you was the tippy top of the transamerica pyramid. we call it compression. as we head throughout the day it's going to force that marine layer right to the surface so you might be using your windshield wipers this morning. when it comes down that low you get that steady drizzle all the way from half moon bay up to san francisco. temperatures are crisp out there. 60 degrees in livermore and winds aren't all that much of a factor right now but will pick up throughout the day and continue to shift out of the north. now, we do have better air quality today in the south bay and the north bay, but we're in the moderate range. central and east bay. you can still open up your windows and breathe that air

freely. high pressure is in control so here's what's happening. it's going to move in today and drive the winds offshore. they come from land to sea, warm up and dry out. we're going to see three days of this pattern so it's going to stay hot around here. next week looking toward significant changes. cooler, cloudier weather. starting to feel like fall. the first official day is the 22nd of this month. 72 degrees in san francisco, 82 in redwood city and about 78 degrees down in santa cruz today. so you want to make those beach plans, we've got great weather for you to do so as we head through saturday. sunday not quite as nice, but hey, that means you can stay inside and watch those 49ers right here on nbc bay area at 5:00 p.m. back to you guys. >> that's what i'm talking about. 4:51. a toddler gets ticketed. the problem that left the little guy on the wrong side of the law. >> maybe when that little guy grows up he can be like these little guys. new recognition for the world famous petaluma little leaguers.

that smoke will be visible when the sun comes up. we'll look over to the north bay, a smooth drive for 101 as well. that motorcade for officer youngstrom's funeral leaves st. helena. for parents this will rank as one of the most ridiculous stories you've ever heard. a pennsylvania toddler has managed to get in trouble with local police. he was actually ticketed for not being able to, you know, hold it until he got to a restroom. 2-year-old nathaniel was out shopping with his mom and two siblings when he realized that he had to go to the bathroom really bad. his mom asked the store for a restroom but they were told it was not for public use so the family rushed outside, tried to do something. before mom could stop him, little nathaniel decided to take aim at a nearby traffic pole. mom tried to redirect him, but it was too late. >> i tell him to go over to a grassy patch and make pee. the next thing you know i have
