we're in tripoli this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. officials have arrested suspects and have several more under surveillance across the eastern part of the country. they're not shedding any light as to who these individuals are and what role they may have played in the deadly attack. what we do know is that according to libyan officials, some of the individuals have been taken into custody after footage emerged at the protests which the officials hearsay was essentially the cover that was exploited by militant groups. they are convinced so far that this was not simply an outburst or spontaneous outburst of anger against an anti-islamic film that appeared in the u.s. but rather a coordinated planned attack exploited by a militant group perhaps affiliated with al qaeda in the eastern part of libya. >> all right. he's in tripoli for us with the latest. thank you. it's 7:03 now. here's david. >> savannah, thank you. the violent anti-american demonstrations are not letting

up in cairo. richard engel is there once again. richard, good morning to you. >> good morning, david. big protests that had been called for here in tahrir square this morning have been canceled. instead, islamic parties say they are only holding symbolic demonstrations against that film that eye man was talking about. the film that caused so much controversy. you can see behind me, very small crowds here at tahrir square. but the situation right in front of the u.s. embassy just off the square remains tense. for a third straight day, the u.s. embassy in cairo is under siege. in fresh clashes this morning, protesters threw stones and molotov cocktails at riot police who struggled to keep them back with tear gas and stones of their own. the demonstrations are small but violent and determined. since yesterday, they haven't left the streets around the embassy for a minute.

retreating and then charging back. throughout the afternoon, middle of the night and into this morning. the protesters are by now a mix of islamic hard liners and soccer hooligans, both with a goal of taking vengeance on the embassy for an internet movie made in the united states that washington has publicly and repeatedly denounced. >> the united states government had absolutely nothing to do with this video. we absolutely reject its content and message. >> the protesters aren't listensening to that. authorities in cairo are erecting new walls around the embassy to prevent mobs from getting close. evidence in concrete of the growing divide between washington, cairo and beyond. there have been demonstrations against the offensive video in 11 countries so far.

half of them in places where washington supported arab spring uprisings that toppled strong men who have formerly been u.s. allies. the arab spring has taken a dark turn. in yemen on thursday, protesters managed to break into the parking lot of the embassy destroying vehicles, smashing windows, even using a forklift to do more damage. no embassy staff was hurt. entering this volatile region now, the pope leaving rome today for a previously scheduled visit to lebanon. so far, there hasn't been any violence there. but today is friday, the muslim holy day of prayer. more protests have been called for. you do get a sense, david, that the egyptian people and the egyptian government are growing increasingly intolerant of these small violent clashes in front of the u.s. embassy. the egyptian president again and perhaps in his strongest terms

yet called on people to protect all diplomatic facilities in in country. david? >> richard engel in cairo. once again here's savannah. the bodies of four americans are being flown back to the u.s. today as some of the relatives speak out about the victims for the first time. >> 52-year-old ambassador chris stevens died as extremist attacked the consulate in benghazi. stevens will be remembered not just for his courage but for his hope for libya. his passion for the region so strong, his family says it outweighed any fear he had of being there. >> he's been in these countries for so long that i haven't really reflected approximate how dangerous the work that he was doing actually was. he's so focused on the joyous time and his diplomatic mission, he didn't even go into really talking too much about how afraid he was for his life. >> while senator john mccain

praised stevens as a dedicated diplomat, hillary stevens remembers her big brother in a more personal way. >> he had a great sense of humor, always a jokester. >> shawn smith, an air force veteran joined the state department a decade ago with assignments in baghdad, the hague and montreal. he was on temporary duty in libya working n information management officer. he leaves behind his wife heather and two young children. the attacks also killed two former navy seals, tyrone woods and glenn doherty both working as security contractors. thursday mourners filed in all day in massachusetts. his sister kate quigley remembered his outgoing spirit. >> glenn lived his life to the fullest. he was my brother. but if you ask his friends, he was their brother as well. >> for two decades, tyrone woods took on some of america's toughest military tasks as a navy seal with multiple

assignments in iraq and afghanistan. 41 years old, he was father to two teenage boys. he was described as a man who loved life, loved adrenaline. all four remembered not just for their work in the line of duty. but as heroes to a nation and to their families. >> savannah, thank you. of course, the situation in the middle east has led to fresh jabs on the presidential campaign trail. peter alexander is here with that part of the story. this is for the first time a major flash point between the president and governor romney. >> a largely dormant iss until now. with the ongoing turmoil in the middle east and the political fallout at home, both president obama and mitt romney are trying to project strength on national security. but less than eight weeks until election day, romney, who by the way, authored a book titled no apology, is making no apologies for sharp criticisms of the president's foreign policy. >> with supporters in virginia, mitt romney toned down his foreign policy attack on president obama thursday to project strength in subtle terms.

arguing the president is a weak leader. >> sometimes it seems we're at the mercy of events. the middle east needs american leadership. >> demonstrating the bitterness on both sides, romney was briefly interrupted by a heckler. why are you politicizing libya? >> why are you politicizing libya? >> hello. >> campaigning in colorado thursday, president obama took a firm stand, reminding voters of his power as commander in chief. >> i want people around the world to hear me. to all those who do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished. it will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world. >> on tuesday, romney blasted the administration for a statement from the u.s. embassy in cairo. that romney said was akin to an polg showing sympathy to the attackers. about his opponent on telemundo.

>> i have observed that there's a tendency to shoot before you aim as i pointed out. >> on thursday, romney responded on abc news. >> what i said was exactly the same conclusion the white house reached, which was that the statement was inappropriate. that's why they backed away from it. >> romney, who has been trailing in the polls among women made them a major focus on thursday surrounded by women on stage as he hammered away as what he calls the president's economic failures. >> he talks about where he wants to get. what he has done has not helped. >> the president tried to contrast his background from his opponent's. >> let's face it, a mix kid from hawaii born to a single mom is not likely to become president of the united states. but in america, it can happen. >> it's not hard to figure out which states these two campaigns believe will decide this election. romney was in florida wednesday, virginia thursday and today he

heads from here back to the battleground of ohio. it's familiar territory for both romney and the president. david, they've been there a combined 14 times since june. seven for romney, seven for the president. >> this is all important ohio. peter alexander, thank you very much. chuck todd is nbc's political director and correspondent. joins us from washington. chuck, good morning. >> good morning david. let's start with foreign policy. how does this play? governor romney goes on attack in the middle of the crisis. was it political tunism to his detriment or what is it to separate himself from the president on foreign policy. >> at this point, whether they can't have the timing issue back, right? this question did they go too soon, did they criticize too soon? there's certainly a debate inside -- among some romney supporters about whether it was appropriate or not. it doesn't matter now. the romney campaign believes fls an opportunity here and there's a couple things too keep an eye on here.

first of all, if you saw this morning in the washington post, a whole bunch of romney foreign policy advisers who drew a bright line this morning, david. they said this would not have happened on a president romney's watch, which of course got the obama campaign fired up and upset about that. one thing to look for in the next couple of weeks, a major foreign policy speech from romney. i think they feel it's an opportunity and they need to flesh this out and that they'll get a lot of attention for it when they do it. >> a lot is about the context of the -- take us through this, including advantage the president when it comes to ohio. >> the big three states, ohio, virginia, florida. we've got new data here. all of the polls were conducted sunday through tuesday before the flare-ups in the middle east, before all of that. look at these advantages for the president. he hits 49 or 50 in all three states. in ohio his lead is up to seven points. it's the 50% mark in virginia and florida.

49, 44. the big take away from this, david, is the right track/wrong track numbers in the states. all of the right track numbers win over 40%. for the first time since we've been tracking in these polls. the right direction/wrong track, where is the country headed had been lingering in the 30s. they think this is the bill clinton bump. that speech that he made that this is where the country is. maybe it's more on the right track than you think. that may be the most important bump from the convention. >> that right track, wrong track a big indicator where independent voters are. we'll keep a close eye on that. chuck todd, thank you very much. more of course on this polling and on this flash point over foreign policy when we join you for meet the press on sunday. we'll have a special hour on that. >> david, thanks. let's get a check of the top stories. natalie morales is at the news desk. >> good morning evan. the house passed a six-month spending bill to prevent the government from shutting down

stock markets are at multiyear highs after another aggressive plan to stimulate was released. that's pushed gold prices up to around six-month highs. the u.s. dollar fallen back against a number of currencies. it's a bit more expensive to take that trip. going into the weekend, gasoline prices in terms of the national average, more expensive than a week ago and a month ago at $3.87. we hope it comes down in future weeks. >> mandy drury, thanks. a brazen burglary caught on tape at a california apple store where a group of suspected robbers slammed a bmw through the store's glass doors. a man then jumps from the car and begins scooping up as many devices as it can before the car makes its get away. the car's license plate fell off unfortunately for the robbers. >> not a smart move. it remained at the scene leading police to one suspect. the 22-year-old pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges on wednesday. >> it's not every day that a

barring some sort of last-ditch legal effort, this will essentially be contraband next spring in new york city. that's because the board of health approved that controversial plan by the mayor to ban the sale of large sugary drinks. they claim it will save lives. others say they want the government to keep its hands off its big sodas. the whole thing could get settled by a lawsuit. in his ongoing battle against the bulge, mayor bloomberg landed another blow. >> we've taken bold action in new york city because of obesity is a national epidemic that's getting worse and we're not just going to wring our hands about it. >> in an 8-0 vote, the city's health board approved the mayor's controversial planning prohibiting the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces. that clears the way for a ban affecting restaurants, food courts, delis stadiums, arenas and movie theaters. >> it's about choice. its about your right to make a

decision in your life. >> many consider bloomberg's war on waistlines an assault on personal freedom. his may announcement about the plan prompted summer protests. >> i'm here to tell mayor bloomberg to mind his own business. >> late night -- >> this is less than 16 ounces. better safe than sorry. >> public opinion seems to be strongly against the ban. 68% responded to this today.com survey. think it's a bad idea. >> i think it's stupid. i honestly do. i think it's completely unnecessary. >> i know that they're trying to say, it's going to cut back on obesity. honestly, people can make their own decisions. >> i don't think it's the mayor's place to make decisions for people about what they're going to ingest. >> but the mayor and many heltd experts don't think it's a coincidence that our guts have grown as available drink sizes have gone from 6.5 ounce toss this. while bloomberg insists the ban

will prevent roughly 6,000 obesity-related deaths -- >> people have the option of buying more. it's a way for people to be mindful, to see and be -- >> i'm probably not going to drink all of it. does anybody drink all of these? one person? if you do, that's a lot of soda. >> the ban is set to take effect in march. but the restaurant and soft drink industry is considering legal action to stop it. >> twice out of the year you can't go with your loved one to the movie theater and buy a big soda. it has no impact on obesity. this isn't going to impact public health, just lessen the lines at the theaters. >> the ban could have national implications, savannah. over the past ten years, new york city banned the use of artificial transfats, banned smoking in bars and restaurants and forced chain restaurants to put calories on the menu. it happened here. awful a sudden it started happening all over america. back to you.

of france. the palace spokesman describes the pair as, quote, hugely saddened, to have their privacy invaded in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner, end quote. friday's official response from st. james palace says, quote, the incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of diana, princess of wales, and all the more upsetting to the duke and duchess for being so. a clear allusion to the death of the princess. while the driver of the car found later to be intoxicated, the death incensed the world. prince william devastated by his mother's death and troubled by the intensity of media scrutiny reportedly hoped to shield his wife from the darker side of a life lived in public. >> you have to remember, he was 15 years old sadly when his

mother died. even though this is a long lens photo opportunity, as they call, it, it's still real invasion of privacy. and for him, of course, will bring back and trigger memories of his late mother princess diana. >> the spotlight also shown recently on william's brother, prince harry, caught frolicking in a las vegas hotel room, but news of these photos comes as kate had been basking in the glow of rave reviews for her sterling performance during this, only her second overseas tour as a duchess, and just 24 hours after her heralded first speech on the international stage. >> thank you. >> a somber farewell to kuala lumpur as the duke and duchess headed to the rain forests of borneo. those at the palace say the couple had every expectation of privacy at the remote house where they were staying and saying officials are considering what the couple's legal options might be. meantime, they say the duke and duchess have their focus firmly

on the tour. david. >> thank you very much this morning. martin bashir is the host of "the martin bashir show." good morning. >> good morning, david. >> 15 years after the death of princess diana. were you surprised that this has happened? >> no, not at all. it's a terribly dismal echo of what happened to william's mother. she was pursued relentlessly, as you know. william maintains that the paparazzi played a role in his mother's death. though nobody was actually prosecuted for that, and i think that this is inevitable because people have assumed that it's the british press who pursue the royal family with the greatest aggression, but in fact it's press all around the world that cover the royal family, and that's the issue. >> the expectation of privacy is also the issue and whether that is at some level naive for any royal in this media environment, in this case she was at a private villa that was pretty remote. >> and the french have far more

strict privacy laws than the british or the americans do. so they assume that, but you can't assume anything if you're a member of the royal family. >> it was striking to hear the royal family laid down such a very strong statement in reaction. >> unprecedented. >> unprecedented. do you think they might take legal action? is there some precedent for that? >> i don't think they will, because i think the issue is that it's in a different jurisdiction, not in the united kingdom, as i've said, and it will only in some ways make the situation play out longer than it needs to. i think the statement was aggressive because they want to assert the privacy of this couple. they were, after all, on holiday. it was just before this important world tour. princess catherine was delivering her first public speech and they had every reason to believe they would be given privacy. >> there's also the context of this, where prince harry most recently caught up in las vegas where he was photographed,

pictures partially nude. is there a level of damage control going on now within the royal family to sort of deal with this and at least caution this new generation? >> i think that they have already worked very, very hard with each member of the royal family. i think the wedding of william and catherine was in some ways as late as it was because everybody knew that they had a relationship that was ongoing, partly because they were being prepared for this kind of onslaught. it's also a very different situation. remember, harry is the second in line, not the heir to the throne, and he's a single man. it's a totally different set of circumstances. this was a gross invasion of privacy, everybody agrees, and i think that's what has prompted the palace and the palace spokespeople to come out so aggressively against the magazine. >> all right. martin bashir, thanks very much. good to see you. >> now we'll head outside to savannah and al. good to see you. >> now we'll head outside to savannah and al. >> i've got a question. hey, sexy lady.

lot of people are upset about, the new charger. it means millions of people will have to spend a little more to make it work with their older devices and accuraciesries. nbc's kristen dahlgren is live in los angeles with that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this is what we're talking about. this is the old iphone plug. it has a whole new look on the new iphone 5, so if you want your old devices to work with this, you're going to have to pay a little more. the iphone 5, thinner, faster, 4g, new features, new plug. >> so a lot's changed, and it's time for the connectors it evolve. >> reporter: the 5 will have a new eight-pin connector, different than the 30-pin version that's been standard since 2003. apple calls the power and dock connector the lightning and it is quite a shock >> i think they do it on purpose to buy new stuff. >> reporter: while the new phone will come with the new charger, the problem is all of those old apple products, ipods, ipads, docking stations, car chargers

won't be compatible without a $29 adapter. >> the short run, yeah, there's a little bit of a hit you might have to take if you want to use your old products with the new new phone. >> reporter: for apple and aftermarket vendors that could mean big bucks. think about it, 40 million iphone 5s are expected to be order by the end of the year. 29 buck adapter for each is almost 1.2 billion. >> any way they can get some extra money out of you, they will. >> reporter: and while experts say the technology upgrade was long overdue, it begs the question what do you do with all of those old chargers. >> reporter: we're fa >> we're facing a new era of little random white cords we find in a drawer or something. >> reporter: outdated power sources, admit it, you probably have more than a few lying around. >> i can't keep track of all the cords. they sit in a pile. >> really frustrating. nice that i could have something to plug everything into. >> reporter: in europe they do, european union law mandates cell

adapter. in this economy it's not a smart publicity move, really not smart for people's pockets, but really they had to make it smaller because the phone needed to be thinner, so the 30-pin port that they have here now goes to eight pins. >> okay. a lot of people are saying why couldn't you have used that micro usb that works on the blackberry. >> that's right, and that's where it has a rub with me. holding different devices that all would use the same micro usb adapter. the micro usbs, used on e-readers and digital cameras and many of us have these ports and in europe you can't sell a phone there without a usb connection because there's a standard so why not make that adopter sold in europe available in the u.s. >> the phone comes with the chargers but accessories that we've accumulated over the years that won't necessarily work. you see them in hotel rooms. >> talking to a hotel manager. what are you going to do with your 450 rooms with the alarm clocks, what are you going to do with an adapter that sits between here and the phone? will it work?

week, on the streets with police officers on ride-alongs from 4:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. in the movie and did tactical training with live ammunition and we did fight training every morning, so there was a lot of preparation that went into this. >> from your point of view as an actor, why did you feel the need for that kind of intense preparation? >> well, the way the movie is shot is all from the point of view of the police officers. >> right. >> and sort of feels like a ride-along where you are in the car with them and when you go into a scenario with them, you are actually from their point of view. the whole movie was shot like that, and in order for us to get the reality of that situation, we had to prepare like that. you know, there was no other way. >> there's also the other part of the reality here that frankly a lot of communities are going through is an intense level of crime that does take it to a level of drug cartels, which is what's at play here, and is incredibly dangerous for the police and federal authorities. >> yeah. well, i think the police are the first responders. >> yeah. >> so, you know, unfortunately or fortunately, you know, for them they are dealing with a situation that is in this case, you know, beyond their jurisdiction. they keep running into the cartel houses that they don't

even know exists and, you know, get into a lot of trouble, unfortunately, and end up having to -- having to deal with the cartel as a result. >> it's also a really interesting story. you have these two realities, you know, the great night scape shots that sort of takes you, transitions you into the drama of the night, but then it's really about the bonding with your partner, and that's a real relationship that really comes through on the screen. it's funny and a real personal bond. >> thank you. >> that was also what the five months was about, me and michael pena who did the movie together, that we actually had a real friendship. the heart is inside this car. we shot all the scenes in the car in a day and a half, you know, and that's like 30% of the movie, so when you're making a move like this, you know, that i think -- the reason why i gravitate to any movie is the heart in it. >> right. >> and what it's really trying to say and it's all about friendship, what the movie is about. >> also a lot of physical training. you were pretty big for this part. did you want to keep all that muscle? >> i spent almost every morning five days a week fighting these

kids in echo park. and i got basically beaten up by, you know, 14 to 20-year-old kids every morning which is -- >> doing a video about that, which people can do that workout at home, too. >> get beat up now. >> you're going to be off broadway as well in a debut. >> yeah. >> why off broadway? tell me about this project. >> i just fell in love with this play, and it's sort of perfect size for off broadway and the story is a story about a family. it's a wonderful, beautiful story about the family and off broadway seems like a nice place to start. >> jake gyllenhaal, congratulations on both. good luck with the movie. >> thank you, man. thank you. >> looks fantastic. >> and maybe you should dab your forehead a little bit. >> i've been withering under my own questioning. >> don't dance with dogs, you know what i mean? just hang with them, have a good time, because dancing with them might not be the right way. >> good advice. jake, thank you. >> any time. >> "end of watch" opens nationwide in theaters next friday. and we're back with, how about a

i'm kind to talk over and explain a little bit about myself. i'm primarily interested in the humanities and not so much science or math. extracurricularly i'm actually the captain of the debate team this year. i'm one of the editors of this school's literary magazine. in terms of college that's going to translate into me wanting to find a place where these kinds of interests that i have are really going to be cultivated. >> hi. my name is bryan stromer. i grew up in new york city, so when i go to college, i'm really looking for a different environment. growing up with cerebral palsy, i've had to advocate for myself a lot and in the process i've also begun advocating for others. that's something that i really enjoy and i want to build upon during my college career. >> hey, guys, i'm thanh-trinh, i

there's 2,000 four-year colleges in this country, and almost all of them accept the majority of kids who apply so the perception that it's competitive is that only a few dozen or so colleges, they are the ones that are often the best known. >> what do you remember in terms of the number of applications? how many schools should you apply to? >> guidance counselors say there's no reason to apply to more than ten colleges, some kids apply to 15 or 20. >> a lot of work. >> and if you have a balanced list no reason to apply to that many colleges. >> okay. also a lot of people looking for information or counseling online as well, and there's some places that actually do this for hire. is it good to go with something like that? >> i think you have to be very, very careful. >> right. >> you have to understand where are the qualifications of this person who is giving you advice, and the best thing is to really talk to students and parents who have come before you. who are the people that they have found helpful? >> one of the things that's changed certainly since you wrote "the guidelines" book ten years ago is standardized

scores, schools take the s.a.t.s or a.c.t. and some don't care and rely on the test scores. >> s.a.t. and a.c.t. very, very comparable in terms of what kids will accept. there's a website which lists several hundred schools that don't require either standardized tests, at least for some applicants. >> affordability playing a role now. are colleges being more or less generation? >> a combination. some schools have had to cut back on financial aid and are paying more attention to students' ability to pay and some of the elite schools are offering phenomenal packages where there are no loans for the most needy students, so you really have to be very discerning and aggressive as sort of a researcher. >> jacques steinberg, more on the website on the college applications process. thank you. earlier this week we asked you to make

tell us what you learned new in all of your research. >> you bet. like most of us, i felt like i knew the basics. i've been interested in sexuality my whole career and thought i followed it, thought i understood. it turns out our idea of what women need is really stuck from 40 years ago and there's all this amazing new science about female arousal and science and orgasms. there i said that, too. i'm blushing. but it should update how we understand women and help people help their lovers, help their wives, their partners and help them. >> you seem connected to creativity. your sexuality and what happens downstairs is connected to your mind. >> i'm interpreting the data that way. there's an amazing new documentation that neuroscientists have established that there's a strong brain-vagina connection.

we talk about the brain-vagina connection. there's no brain-penis connection. a disconnection. we'll wait for a man to write that book. there's understandably a brain-vagina connection such that when a woman is empowered to know about her desire, know what makes her happy, think about it and have the satisfying orgasm, she gets some really great neuro chemicals affecting her mood. she gets dopamine, and she gets opiaites, which is about joy. i've definitely interviewed a lot of women who realize when they see the signs, ost, that's w when i'm really feeling good about myself and my lover i can bring that o other aspects of my life. >> we're all so different. every woman is completely different. as you were saying this, did you stick to any one, like a nun,

who has never had sex her whole life and seems to enjoy a beautiful experience in life of service to mankind. >> oh, absolutely. >> how does that figure in? >> i'm so glad you asked that. let me stress the findings in this book. i have reader ls who are celibate, lesbian, bisexual, married. you don't have to be having sex with another person to be able to use this information to protect your own health and well being. you get it from nursing or holding a baby. you get dopamine from shopping. it's about knowing yourself better. you don't have to be in a relationship for that. you said everyone is different. this is a huge important finding. in the '70s where all our information has stuck. they said men and women are
