police and protesters fighting for control of wall street, as the occupy movement celebrates its first anniversary. the bay area occupiers are planning some demonstrations of their own. how it could affect your plans in san francisco. and also new evacuation orders from the u.s. government as anti-american protests escalate in several countries. and week two of a massive teachers strike in chicago. how it's now shaping the national debate on public education and why it could be turning into a court battle. right now we give you a live look outside. kind of low-hanging clouds out there with that orange overhang on this monday. that is san jose. this is september 17th.

this is "today in the bay." a very good morning. it is 4:31 on the nose. i'm jon kelley and look who's back. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon, fresh off vacation. lots to get to this morning. we welcome rob mayeda in for christina loren. >> we're waking up this morning looking at some low clouds around san jose, and we do have a cooler forecast today. we're looking at 60s and 70s for most of the bay area today. only 80 in livermore, 75 in san jose. more clouds in the middle of the week which means if you're driving along highway 17, mike, you'll run into fog around the summit. >> you've been warned about the fog as well. a clear view of the bay bridge but no slowing except for that cash lane. this is a right lane blockage by a stalled vehicle just north of the 24 interchange, northbound

side of 680 loses one lane but you don't see a lot of slowing. the yellow at the bottom of the screen just down 460. the south bay easy drive north 101 just past 680, the volume is light. there was an accident on highway 87. we'll check on that in the next report. pack to you. happening right now, protesters gathering all across the country as the occupy movement turns one year old today. >> rallies are being planned in more than 30 cities, including here in the bay area. during the weekend occupiers got an early start to their celebration. nearly 300 marched near wall street, the birth place of the movement. police arrested about a dozen protesters. christie smith joins us live from san francisco with a look at what local occupiers are planning and the impact it could have on traffic. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. already about a half dozen occupy demonstrators are camping out here in the financial district this morning, marking the one-year anniversary of the

movement. i spoke with one occupier who said, you know, you may not see them in large groups camping and demonstrating like you did before, but that's because they have gotten more focused with certain groups dealing with foreclosures and housing issues, others handling what they call unfair banking practices. this occupation is what they call the bankers heart, which houses some of the larger financial institutions. but what's happening here kicks off a day of events in the financial district and around downtown san francisco. they say one year later they feel they have made a real difference. >> nobody before talked about how we have so much wealth concentrated in 1%, and that wealth is going to war, to weapons, to financial speculation, and it's not going to create a productive world, it's not -- we're not investing in people, we're not investing in the future, we're investing in short-term profits. >> reporter: now, this is some video of the movement when it

began last year. again, there are occupy events going on all day. noon at the san francisco war memorial, 2:30 over at the hyatt at spear and market. another one at 330 wells fargo at fillmore and california. people will be singing there. 4:00 a group is going to head over to the pg&e headquarters in san francisco, but the one that's likely to have the biggest impact on you might be a march and rally that starts at 5:00 where we are here at california and kearney. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." this is a mystery aboard an amtrak train. a family desperate for answers after this van, 69-year-old charles dowd, vanished while traveling across the country. dowd is a retired san francisco firefighter to whond to take amtrak to visit family in montreal. he left on wednesday but never made it to his destination. his family last heard from dowd when he called thursday evening saying the train was just

leaving denver. on friday he was supposed to make a connecting train in chicago but he never made it. his cell phone, medications and luggage were all in his sleeping car but there is no sign of dowd. the last time he was seen reportedly was early on friday in omaha, nebraska. >> there's an unconfirmed report that a conductor spoke with him at the very early morning hours on friday morning, and so i am hoping against hope that that's a true story. >> dowd's daughter says the conductor did tell police the 69-year-old seemed a little disoriented. the family is right now traveling to omaha to circulate missing person flyers and work with police there. they also hope to set up a facebook page to try to get the word out. amtrak officials issuing a statement saying they are aware of the situation and they are working with local police stations along the train route to try to search for dowd. 4:35 now. to our continuing coverage of the growing anti-american protests in the middle east.

demonstrators staged several violent demonstrations in afghanistan over the weekend, including this one at kabul. protesters set fire to two vehicles and attacked several compounds belonging to a security firm. similar protests are happening where angry crowds threw rocks and chanted "death to america." demonstrators are angry over an obscure anti-islamic film posted on youtube. afghanistan's government has now blocked that video online. meantime the u.s. state department is also ordering diplomats and their family members to leave the embassies in sudan and tunisia after large protests in those countries over the weekend. in the sudanese capital two people were killed in a demonstration outside the u.s. embassy while the neighboring british and german embassies were damaged. in tunisia protesters stormed the u.s. embassy and ransacked a nearby school. the u.s. government is urging all americans in tunisia and sudan to leave the country.

similar violent protests have also been reported in pakistan, egypt and iran. new this morning, four american soldiers have been killed in afghanistan in an attack by afghan police. reports say the soldiers were coming to the aid of the police at a checkpoint when this attack happened. the latest attack comes after nato air strikes killed eight women and girls gathering firewood on sunday in a remote part of that country. nato officials confirming the deaths this morning, but also say the attack killed a large number of insurgents. now, the deadly checkpoint shootings just the latest in a series of attacks by afghan troops on allied troops. there is no connection between the attacks but officials admit the violence is putting a strain on relations with the u.s. and afghanistan. it has been six months since sierra lamar disappeared and there's still no sign of her. last night family and friends

gathered for a vigil, releasing balloons and offering prayers. >> we're all still here and we're all still looking. >> we come out, we search and it's just heart-wrenching to see what they're going through. >> missing sierra, you know, that's still there. just wanting her to be back home with us and get on with a normal life. >> 21-year-old anton garcia torrez charged with kidnapping and murdering lamar, but he has yet to enter a plea. the woman accused of killing hayward nursing student michelle lei is due in court today. the pretrial hearing is set to start exactly one year to the day after le's body was found. police say le's body was

found -- her blood was found on esteban's shoes and they tracked both cell phones to the same location the night le disappeared. a father charged with kidnapping his children and sailing away with them in a stolen yacht is expect had to enter a plea in court today. prosecutors say he took his two children from their mother's home and then stole a yacht from an alameda harbor and sailed out to the coast. in court last week he claimed he was just trying to save his children from an abusive home. the children's mother had recently sought a restraining order against him. just hours from now classes are expected to resume for the first time since a massive fire at a menlo park prep school. crews tore down portable buildings gutted by fire at the beechwood school. investigators say a faulty kitchen appliance likely started that fire last thursday. the fire did $400,000 in damage, destroying the school's

administrative offices and the third grade classroom. beechwood is a private school that is geared toward low income families and funded mostly by private donations. coming up at 5:00, we'll have a live report from menlo park on the cleanup efforts and what is next for that school. it is 4:40 right now. let's check back in with rob mayeda in for christina loren and tell us what's happening as we start the workweek. >> we're starting off with a lot of low clouds. here we go, the last few days of summer this week. we roll into fall this saturday and this morning we have lots of low clouds, even into pleasanton and livermore this morning. you can see a strong sea breeze reaching into fairfield. southwest winds at 21 miles per hour. when you see a sea breeze that strong at this hour, you know you've got low clouds pushed inland by that sea breeze and very likely temperatures this afternoon inland 5 to 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. not a whole lot happening on the radar. for the sierra, it's just these low clouds. we'll have to wait for them to

break up. you'll see fog right around the golden gate bridge and down the coast. a very cool day on the coast. sunshine this the afternoon inland but 94 that sea breeze keeping things cooler than yesterday. 70s around lunchtime out toward the tri-valley. close to 80 in livermore. as you look at the forecast you'll see a mild start to the workweek, a little bit warmer thursday into friday and then here comes fall, mike. saturday, temperatures cooling down for the weekend. >> you know what, that might be bad news for some folks but i like it cooler so bring on the fall but hold off the rain. we're looking to the south bay, easy flow. i'll show you where i was concerned here. that's where our camera is at 680, the 101 interchange right here and that's where the earlier accident was reported. 87 at 101. it's a smooth drive and that just cleared from the chp blotter so in g nethat's good n. we're looking at the peninsula, 101 through palo alto shows a smooth drive as well.

welcome back, everyone. what a beautiful live look outside early this morning. 4:45 at the bay bridge. we'll check the morning commute coming up. well, it appears chicago's mayor will now ask a judge to force more than 20,000 striking teachers to get back to work. members of the chicago teachers union said yesterday they would extend their strike while they review a proposed new contract. the new deal would give teachers cost of living increases and make 30% of a teacher's evaluation based on a student's test scores.

the new deal would also give teachers the right to appeal their rating. the new evaluation system had been the biggest sticking point, something that's a much-debated topic nationwide. >> you don't have to spend the kind of money for a student that's being spent in a place like chicago and get better results. it requires robust accountability, teacher evaluation systems that's based on student performance. >> today chicago mayor rahm emanuel will ask the city attorney to pursue a court order forcing the teachers back into the classroom. more than 400,000 children are being impacted by this strike. 4:46. a huge perk for yahoo! employees and a lot of wonder on wall street. for the latest ahead of the opening bell, let's turn to hampton pearson live at our cnbc bureau in washington, d.c. >> reporter: hi, laura. futures are lower after friday closed out a stellar week for stocks. the feds plan to boost the economy with more monitor stimulus since the dow, nasdaq

>> yes. there will be enough coffee to fill the bay to keep me awake. summer has flown on by. we've got fall coming up as early as this saturday, and this morning you might notice a little bit of a change in our weather. we've got low clouds all the way inland. we're talking out by livermore. 680 through pleasanton you'll find some of those low clouds. san jose, 55 degrees. temperatures around the north bay, we're seeing a few upper 40s and low 50s. 46 novato. look at fairfield, 53 degrees but the wind is the story. you've got winds up above 20 miles per hour out of the southwest that is pushing in some of that marine air all the way into solano county so the ocean air conditioning as we like to say is going to be an all-day event. temperatures will be cooling down from those near 90s we saw in a few spots for the weekend. mostly 70s inlane, a few lower 80s out towards the east bay and morgan hill but most of the coast and around the bay we're looking 60s and 70s. no thunderstorms in the sierra. you might have noticed yesterday

we had beautiful high clouds come on by, a sign that high pressure was weakening and sliding to the south, so the storm track, though, staying off to the north. this is our cool water vapor radar. we'll be looking at this a lot as we get into the storm season. the main jetstream off to the north. no rain in the forecast today. you can see the low clouds all the way across the bay through 8:00. as we go through the afternoon, sunshine inland but our temperatures with that sea breeze running cooler than yesterday. mostly 70s to maybe around 80 near morgan hill. toward the east bay upper 70s and low 80s as we head through the afternoon. in the north bay winds out of the south means your temperatures will only be 70s. this time of year we normally get offshore winds and temperatures out by the coast, not going to happen this week. a little warmer thursday into friday and then the weekend, here comes fall and temperatures falling as we go forwards saturday and sunday. >> right on track, thanks so much. 4:49. this morning nhl owners and

players admitting the entire season could be lost thanks to a new lockout. the collective bargaining agreement expired on saturday night and so far it looks like it is a long way off. the players and owners are at odds over how to split hockey-related revenue. training camps were supposed to start this week, opening day scheduled for october 11th, but all signs admit it's unlikely. the lockout could not only mean big disappointment for sharks fans, it could have an impact on many south bay businesses who rely on the games for revenue. the sharks released a statement that said our fans and partners are our number one priority. we appreciate your patience and ask that you continue to bear with us. we hope to see you and the n. l action back at the hp pavilion very soon. while on the football field the 49ers dominating detroit in their very first home game last night. the team not only looking good on the field going to 2-0. team officials also adding a

"endeavour" was scheduled to leave kennedy space center today for a nationwide tour and would end up in los angeles, but weather postponing that move until tomorrow. low flyovers are still planned along cape canavarel and nasa facilities from mississippi to the bay area. "endeavour" is expected to fly over the bay area on thursday before heading to its final home in the california science center located down in los angeles. 4:55. get ready for a change at the golden arches drive-through. mcdonald's will start listing calorie information on its menus today. the move comes ahead of national rules that take effect next year requiring restaurants to clearly post calories and other nutritional information for customers. the new calorie-count menus will be posted in more than 14,000 restaurants and drive-throughs. now, if they can hear your order. >> that's funny. keep an eye on that too. 4:55. let's check in on the traffic with mike. >> it's going to take forever
