4:30 am
any time you're on a real exciting project like that, you know, you have to go through some grieving. >> the bay area bids farewell to the space shuttle program with an historic flyover today. but while everyone's eyes are on the sky, it could cause some trouble for your travel plans. what you need to know about possible slowdowns. and it is finally here, the first iphone 5s are already in the hands of apple fans in australia. here in the bay area lines of people are counting the hours until they can get theirs. we are live with a preview. we're also live with a live look outside. look at that. before the sun's arrival on this friday, september 21st, this is "today in the bay."
4:31 am
good morning to you. it is 4:31. i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. something we'll only get to say once in our lifetime, space shuttle "endeavour" soaring through the skies above the bay area. rob mayeda is in our weather center tracking the fog conditions and mike has a look at potential problem areas as that shuttle flies over. first let's go to bob redell, live at moffett field which has quite a history with the space shuttle program. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this is certainly one of those days you do not want to be caught without your smartphone camera because this is going to be a sight you'll want to catch on a digital format. the schedule for the space shuttle's arrival here in the bay area has been delayed by an hour this morning so the san francisco fog can have more time to burn off.
4:32 am
here's the schedule, the space shuttle "endeavour" will leave edwards air force base on the back of that nasa 747 around 8:15 this morning for its final victory tour. it will head north for a flyover over sacramento and sometime after 9:30 it should arrive over the east bay. the best viewing places will be walnut creek, the space and science center in oakland, which is holding a viewing party, just under $16 a ticket. then it heads across the bay to the bay bridge. we understand it might go down as low as 1500 feet at that point. then it will head south down the peninsula for its final low-flying buzz cut here at moffett field. that should happen by 10:30 this morning. of course moffett field is home to nasa ames which played a key role in the development of the space shuttle program. scientists perfected the heat shield, performed wind tunnel tests and among other things this is the place where shuttle astronauts came to train in the
4:33 am
simulator. some of those astronauts, including one who actually flew the "endeavour" will be here today and might even be speaking to the public. there's a speaking program that begins at 8:00. the gates open here at nasa ames at 6:00. i just spoke to the guard manning the gate and they expect 8,000 to 10,000 people. you will want to arrive early. you'll be allowed to be out there on the flight line. as i mentioned, sometime prior to 10:30, that's when the space shuttle will do that low buzz-cut fly over the runway. this was the fifth and final shuttle that was built for nasa. it flew 25 missions. during those 25 missions, flew somewhere around 122 million miles. reporting live here at nasa ames, bob redell for "today in the bay." bob mentioned the fog. meteorologist rob mayeda is in the weather center. is the fog going to clear in time to see the shuttle?
4:34 am
>> i'm encouraged. we've been watching the fog along the coast. this includes sfo down towards the naval air station. we're seeing visibility close to 10 miles, same in san jose. why this is critical as it makes the low pass over the golden gate bridge to your top, which is 750 feet above the water, we're looking at the marine layer at 1250 feet, so that's below flight level with patchy flight clouds. that's good news for the flight operations team. doesn't look like the low clouds will get in the way of that elevation they plan to fly through at 1500 feet this morning, so moffett field may see a patch or two of clouds, but good news, visibility should be quite good this morning which unfortunately means, mike, a lot of folks may be slowing down to look at it. >> and thats a major concern. whether or not this historical event and spectacle interest will affect your drive most likely. we're looking over at 101 at the bottom of your screen.
4:35 am
you see the silhouette, those are the hangars and the same area the shuttle will be passing in addition to the historic golden gate bridge. so the skies clearly visible from the freeway and on the approach, the shuttle and 747 escort will be visible. this will affect the flow of traffic. let me orient the map to face north. there's 101, 85, 237, those freeways all converge around that same area passing shoreline amphitheater in mountain view and sunnyvale, so expect a lot of spectator slowing in that vicinity. we'll track all the events for you and send it back to the desk. the streets won't be the only places you'll see slowdowns during the shuttle flyover. traffic in the skies will also come to a halt which could mean delays at all three local airports. the federal aviation administration has issued flight restrictions from 8:30 until 10:30 this morning. the restrictions will prevent most planes from taking off or
4:36 am
landing while the shuttle is in the area. if you are traveling today or expecting someone, you are urged to check with your airline for specifics on delays. if you happen to catch "endeavour" on camera as it flies over your neck of the woods, we'd love to see it. on instagram use #nbcbay dsh area or e-mail us, or tweet us your photos @nbcbayarea or upload it to our facebook page. >> we will have complete coverage all morning long and don't forget we'll be breaking into regular programming to bring you the shuttle's flyover live around 9:30. we will also stream it live on n nbcbayarea.com. we have new details on a police shooting that sparked a late-night protest and some vandalism in san francisco. we do have a look of some
4:37 am
pictures of the damage at the mission police station on valencia street. several dozen protesters gathered there around 10:00 last night after a police officer shot and wounded a suspected gang member in the neighborhood. the protesters expressway painted the word "killers" on the side of the building and smashed a window. police say the suspect in the shooting had pulled a gun on a plainclothes gang task force officer. that's when the officer fired. the suspect was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover. investigators say a semiautomatic handgun was found at the scene of the shooting. this morning a 78-year-old woman is being treated for serious injuries after she was hit by an suv and slammed into a building in san rafael. police say just after 5:00 last night a driver identified as a 55-year-old crashed through a small diner and pinned the woman beneath the car. she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. the street had been closed to
4:38 am
allow vendors to set up for a farmers market. the driver was a vendor and was trying to navigate the crowd. police say drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 4:38. this morning san mateo police are heading to colorado to help search for a bay area man who vanished on an amtrak train. detectives are heading there to assist in the search for 69-year-old charlie dowd. the retired san francisco firefighter was riding an amtrak train from emeryville to chicago last week when he vanished. he was last heard from on september 13th when his train was leaving denver. amtrak officials say it's possible he fell from the train. crews are now searching 160 miles of rail lines between colorado and nebraska. workers at yosemite national park are now being tested for the hantavirus. they want to survey workers to confirm they have not been exposed to the deadly virus.
4:39 am
so far two workers tested positive, but doctors say the strain they have will not lead to the deadly hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. nine people who spent time at the park this summer have been infected. three have died. turning now to decision 2012, this afternoon presidential candidate mitt romney returns to the bay area for an exclusive 5:00 p.m. fund-raiser on the peninsula. his running mate, paul ryan, will be speaking to the national aarp convention along with president obama. the focus on medicare and social security. the romney campaign is also pouncing on a comment made by the president yesterday during a forum on spanish language television. mr. obama expressed frustration that he has not done more on a key issue for latinos, that's immigration reform. >> and the most important lesson i've learned is that you can't change washington from the inside. you can only change it from the outside. >> the president today threw in the white flag of surrender
4:40 am
again. his slogan was yes, we can. his slogan now is no, i can't. this is time for a new president. >> the latest poll showed the president leading romney by eight points in the key battleground state of iowa and five points in colorado and wisconsin. today's the day, apple's coveted new iphone 5 goes on sale just hours from now here, and for others the wait is already over. apple co-founder steve wozniak got his new phone in brisbane, australia, this morning. he's there for a business forum and ended up being seventh in line. customers in singapore and hong kong poured into apple stores by the hundreds. the iphone is also being launched in japan, the u.k., canada, france, germany and of course all across the u.s. here's a look at the flagship store on fifth avenue overnight. sales start there in about 20 minutes or so. apple fans in the bay area will
4:41 am
have to wait a few more hours, but they're waiting patiently. scott mcgrew is actually heading to the apple store in los gatos where dozens of people spent the night outside. we'll check in with him coming up in just a few minutes. the forecast is important for all the people camped out waiting for the iphone 5. >> it's amazing to see just how much people are out there. >> amazing. >> a lot of apple fans, including rob mayeda. >> that's true, but i'm nice and comfortable indoors. outside it's chilly. one of the side effects of no clouds is temperatures have dropped off. 54 san francisco, 56 in fairfield right now. notice the winds, you've still got the onshore sea breeze going, but high pressure is starting to build in today, which is a little bit of good news both in terms of warming our temperatures up if you want to last face the summer this afternoon. we get some 80s in the forecast for you inland today, but let's look at the low clouds. we'll see patches of low clouds through 7:00. as we go through 9:00 and 10:00, just broken areas of clouds
4:42 am
mainly along the coast but the skies should improve as we go through the morning. by the afternoon still some fog on the coast so 60s for most of the coast. santa cruz the exception to the rule, 76 degrees. san jose also 76. 84 in livermore. morgan hill 84 degrees and 72 in oakhand. so the seven-day forecast, fall starts tomorrow, but we bumped up the temperatures for tomorrow. looks like we're going to get some warm temperatures to start the weekend and turn breezy and a little cooler on sunday, mike. we'll start off with the oakland camera and show that to you full screen but southbound, this orientation, we do move our cameras around so i'll try to orient you throughout the morning. southbound with the headlights past the coliseum and both directions have construction north of here on 980. now we'll get to the maps and show you a glimpse of the flow of traffic throughout the south bay which is moving pretty nicely right now. we had an earlier accident on 101 just as you approach that 680 interchange. that has cleared from story road
4:43 am
and the vicinity. no major slowing although that yellow on 880 may be a concern but speeds dipping down around 60 and no incidents through the area. still ahead, hard-core apple fans counting down the hours and probably minutes to get their hands on that iphone 5. we'll take you live to los gatos this morning where people have been waiting in line since yesterday. scott mcgrew is going to find out why they are so excited coming up in a live report. plus the nation's biggest retailer gives amazon kindle the boot. why walmart is dropping the tablet from its inventory.

good friday morning to you. this is a live look at what everyone is waiting for, the coveted apple 5. this is live outside los gatos apple store and there's no shortage in the anticipation of apple's latest, greatest gadget. >> apple has already sold more than two million iphone 5s in preorders alone. judging by the lines we've seen at stores around the world, it looks like they'll be selling millions more before the day is over. scott mcgrew is live at the apple store in los gatos where quite a few people spent their night waiting for the new

iphone. where's your tent, scott? >> reporter: good morning to you. you know, what i do have is a timer so three hours, 13 minutes left on the old ipad 2 here. i got -- a year and a half ago we were standing in line for this so how quickly times change. if you look down the street it's about 80 people in line last i checked. from the apple store in los gatos all the way down past the movie theater down to about round table pizza. a lot of people have come out of line, which is kind of cool. the ability to trust your neighbor and go take some sort of break that you need to take and come back, which is cool. jesse, come over here. where did you go? jesse is number 5 in line. the student at -- >> west valley. >> so show us the phone that you have currently. you've never stood in an apple before. >> i'm using a $20 phone. not much happening with this.
4:48 am
>> reporter: and you're hoping to finally get yourself an iphone? >> yes. to replace one that was stolen. >> reporter: very good. so you've got 3:13 left, jesse. >> and i'm still here. >> reporter: thank you, jesse. he said he left school early yesterday. no school today so he gets to stand in line. at 8:00 a.m. the doors open. as you were pointing out, we're actually one of the last to get the iphone, which is kind of ironic as the sun comes across america. with asia, it started in asia. we'll be one of the last and hawaii the very last. >> yes, my friend, my friend, but where did it all start? >> reporter: right here. >> right here. right here, exactly. it will be fun to check in with you all morning long. 4:48 right now. they say you can almost get anything at walmart but there's something you won't see on the store shelves anymore. for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell, we turn to seema mody live at cnbc

world headquarters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. yeah, that's right. let's take a look at the markets. futures higher after a mixed session on thursday. the dow and the nasdaq diverging as economic reports from the u.s., china and europe did little to ease investor concerns about the health of the global economy. asia and european markets are mostly higher today. it is a quiet end to the week with no economic data out today. the dow rising nearly 19 points to close at 13,596. the nasdaq slipping six points to close at 3175. here's the news that you were just mentioning. walmart is going to stop selling the amazon kindle following a similar move by target earlier this year. amazon sells the kindle at such a low price there's little profit margin. in layman terms there's very little meat left on the bone for retailers that sell the device. amazon makes its money from all the content you buy from its online store to fill up your kindle so that's one thing you will not be seeing at walmart. back to you. >> thank you very much, seema.
4:50 am
rob mayeda in now for christina loren. >> you totally caught me pouring my coffee. >> cheers. >> thank you. >> well, happy friday to you. >> the forecast is so important to you -- >> yes, as the sun comes up and mixes down drier air, it should start to break up low clouds after sunrise, but the giants, how about magic number three. can you believe that? >> i know. >> so we've got the shuttle coming to town and our san francisco giants now, yes, magic number three. let's take a look at the forecast for that game. the padres now coming to town. let's see if the dodgers can keep on losing and the giants keep on winning. first pitch 60 degrees later on at 7:15. if you're heading outside the next few minutes, bundle up. we've got low 40s and 50s around the bay area. clearing skies for most of the inland locations means it's like
4:51 am
sleeping without a blanket overnight so all the heat escapes back into space so we've got a chilly morning. still a sea breeze and it does look like we'll see patchy low clouds. at least through mid-morning. they may not be out there right now but between now and sunrise, i think we'll see some low clouds forming around the inner bay. the satellite view shows you high clouds coming in from time to time this afternoon right offshore. upper lower will toss a few of those our way heading into the afternoon. so 8:00 in the morning perhaps the reason for the one-hour delay for "endeavour" to get into the bay area. as the sun comes up, the low clouds start to break up around moffett field. through the afternoon more low clouds on the coast and high clouds coming in for the afternoon. high temperatures around the bay area at thtoday, 76 san jose. temperatures for our valleys will be climbing into the mid-80s this afternoon and, yes, today, by the way, the last full day of summer. hard to believe summer has gone on by but there you go.
4:52 am
83 in santa rosa, 66 in san francisco. if you're a fan of summer weather, good news. fall gets started just after 7:30 tomorrow morning but we'll see a warmer day tomorrow for inland valleys. sunday a little cooler and breezy but not as cool as we thought before so the weekend forecast looking pretty good. >> that's a warm-up i can take. that's perfect. thanks. still ahead, the research offering everyone a new excuse for overindulging in a sweet treat. and we've got maybe chocolate on the truck at the truck scales on fremont. 880 moves smoothly but we'll show you what else is going on this early friday commute.
4:55 am
good morning. just up on 4:55, just up period. we're looking over here to the san mateo bridge. on the peninsula side, traffic flows very nicely westbound with those highlights off of the high rise and over towards 101 and 92 exchange which moves smoothly along the peninsula. another live look shows you the bay bridge toll plaza. it's always got somebody coming through but not a major concern down the east shore freeway. there is construction on the east bay. not a big concern as far as those speeds go but 880 coming through oakland show the speed sensors coming into the yellow. that's just a little slowing between 980 and 16. in both directions you lose two lanes, sometimes three. 24 has your typical flow through the caldecott as well with that construction zone.
4:56 am
again, no slowing in the westbound bores. we were telling you about this earlier in the week and now is your chance to trade your soda for a salad in the south bay today. if you bring an unopened soda can or bottle to the farmers market in cupertino today, you'll get a voucher to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. santa clara county is doing this to try to raise awareness about the negative health impacts of soda and to encourage healthy eating for kids. the event is running today from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at vallco farmers market just off the freeway in cupertino. >> it's always okay to indulge in a little chocolate, right? >> it is always okay. >> if you're craving chocolate, it's probably just your brain talking. >> my brain talks a lot. scientists say they have discovered an area of the brain that helps control your desire to eat sweets. scientists from the university of michigan fed m & ms to rats. they noticed a certain chemical in the brain linked to pain
4:57 am
relief. it actually spiked as the rats ate more chocolate. the more chemical there was, the more the rats ate. scientists say this could explain why we always want more sweets. still ahead, the countdown to history. space shuttle "endeavour" makes its final flight over the bay area today. we'll tell you where the best vantage point is and why it could mean problems for roadways.
4:59 am
the flyover of a lifetime. i'm bob redell. i'll tell you the best places to catch the space shuttle "endeavour" as she makes her final tribute here in the bay area. that story coming up. >> reporter: and the beautiful view at the golden gate bridge is going to get even more interesting today as the shuttle flies by. i'm christie smith. we'll tell you about the time it's expected and how traffic might be impacted. and if you're heading to either location this morning, bundle up. we've got some low
