thousands of people starting to gather to watch as the shuttle "endeavour" will swing through the bay area during its final sli flight. we have a team in place. let's begin with bob redell live at nasa ames in mountain view where thousands are already gathering to say a final goodbye to "endeavour." >> reporter: good morning, laura. nasa ames is expecting 8,000 to 10,000 people out here. maybe two to 300 people are here waiting for the gates to open up so they can get out to the flight line. at 8:00 they'll have a speaking program. one of the original "endeavour" astronauts, steve robinson, is scheduled to speak. at roughly 10:00 is when the space shuttle "endeavour" pic piggybacked on the 747 is supposed to do a flyover. i was just talking to someone at nasa ames, they're saying it could be as low as 200 to 300 feet, which would be quite a sight. you've got a lot of people out here who have been following the
6:54 am
shuttle people since it started. you've got a father and his few kids. why was it important for you to be out here this morning? >> well, it's a once in a lifetime chance to see the space shuttle come over the bay area, so -- >> reporter: are you pretty excited? >> yeah. >> reporter: did you bring your camera, i assume? >> i see the cameras out here. all i have is my cell phone camera so this is going to have to work. >> reporter: have fun out there. they were initially saying you need a parking permit. though i got in without a parking permit so it's sounding like it's more first come, first serve. the shuttle is expected to enter the east bay around 9:30 this morning. so if you're in walnut creek, that would be a good spot. it's also flying over a lot of the major science museums, chabot, the lawrence hall of science. the golden gate bridge. another low flyover expected there. heading south down the peninsula finally here to moffett field. again, rough time of arrival here, around 10:00. from here it's south to l.a. to that museum where it will be on

display eventually. bob redell, "today in the bay." whether you're trying to spot the shuttle, chances are it's going to affect your day. christie smith is live in san francisco with what you need to know about the impact today's shuttle could have both on traffic, on the roads and also up in the skies. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. i just spoke with a man from the east bay who got out of his car here at crissy field with a huge camera. he said he didn't want to take a chance. in his opinion the shot is of course the shuttle going right by the golden gate bridge. he said he did not want to miss it. and people are starting to show up here at crissy field where thousands of shuttle watchers are expected along the embarcadero, fisherman's wharf, basically anywhere you can get a view. the bridge span stays open during this low flyover but traffic is expected to be slow even though that's not the best place to view. the chp warning drivers not to be distracted, trying to drive

an watch or even pull over on the freeway. they don't want you to do that. now, i spoke with one man originally from florida who's excited about this. he told me he's seen two laumpl launches. >> of course when you see it take off, it goes up and it turns. a lot of clouds sometimes in florida so it can disappear fairly quickly into those clouds. but it's an experience that you will always, always remember. >> reporter: something else to keep in mind, if you have a flight of your own today at any of the three major bay area airports, there is a no-fly zone around the shuttle, so you may be delayed taking off or arriving. it would be between 8:30 and 10:30 but that will be adjusted as the shuttle gets closer. before we go, i wanted to show you this group that's gathering on the rocks over there. a lot of them have cameras and chairs. we've seen people come out with binoculars. they are certainly ready to see it. reporting live at crissy field, i'm christie smith, "today in

the bay." so the $64,000 question is will san francisco's famed fog keep you from seeing the shuttle flight? rob mayeda has the answer. >> i think the folks here and at edwards air force base have been watching the changes in our weather and that's the reason why the flight into the bay area did get pushed back after the 9:00 hour. now, christie smith had that view over the golden gate bridge area. the shuttle expected to go over that region about 1500 feet. even though we have patches of low clouds, visibility overall in the bay area, not too bad. we're seeing patches of low clouds around the bay bridge toll plaza, down into hayward this morning. so at 9:00, some patches of low clouds at the san mateo an probably dumbarton bridge too. but as we go through 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00, skies are starting to clear as dryer air starts to mix down and we get improving visibility fblt out at moffett field, take a jacket. it is chilly out there this

morning with mostly clear skies. that's going to be an amazing view, but one that could slow you down if you're not prepared for it. if you come out of the waldo tunnel, you come out, look up and there's the golden gate bridge. oh, this thing, it's a plane and something piggybacking on it. yeah, the shuttle coming over the golden gate bridge. here is the iconic bridge itself. now, even more of a factor coming out of the city as you travel north, you may see that coming right toward you because that may be the flight pattern. so if you are encountering that, just continue along your way. enjoy the fact that you've experienced that, but focus on the road. chp warning folks do not stop, do not slow down and watch for others. drive defensively today, folks. we'll give you a look along the peninsula. here we're looking south toward mountain view. here's 101, here's the silhouette for hangar one and the other harngs thengars there. bob showed you all those folks lining up. let me show you how we're talking about traffic flow. here's 101 for the area, typical
6:59 am
northbound traffic flow for the morning commute. also just off 101 and 85, there's moffett field, we'll circle it for you. 101, 85, 237, all may see the shuttle pass very close to the freeways. the off-ramps into mountain view will get very crowded starting now in through the morning because of all the folks heading there. be prepared for slowing and don't stop on the roadway. plan ahead. we're giving you plenty of time, an we'll show you the picture as well. >> and we want to see your photos of this event. share them with us, the flyover pictures onnin stagram, tweet us @nbcbayarea or post them directly to our nbc bay area facebook page. you might even see some of your photos on the air. nasa expects the shuttle to arrive here in the bay area sometime between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning. so of course stick with nbc bay area. we'll break into regular programming to of course bring it to you live. so many
