beginning after a second protest over a police shooting in the mission neighborhood turns violent. this is a live look at the mission police station. there was extra presence during the demonstration. protesters gathered and marched through the neighborhood that vandalized. the officer-involved shooting, this is the weapon that the suspected gang member pointed at the officer. it is a tech 9 machine pistol. he was shot after a foot chase. the suspect was on parole for a prior conviction of assault with a deadly weapon. the 42-year-old man suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. after the shooting, protesters targeted the district and they were upset with what they called excessive use of force. riot police arrived and the

crowd disbursed. a stranger danger on the peninsula and parents are warned to be extra cautious. the attempted clean up happened around 2:45 at park side elementary school. investigators said the girl managed to escape a short distance away. she is safe and with her family, but the alleged kidnapper is on the loose. they are also working to see whether this case is connected with two others at nearby schools. yesterday's stranger was escorted off the campus and at bayside academy, a stranger offered alcohol to students. if you know anything about the incidents, call police. >> the senate worked into the wee hours of the morning on unfinished business. they finished up before going on

recess until november. the most crucial item was a measure to fund federal programs and avoid a government shut down on october 1st. that passed 62-30. lawmakers will focus on the november elections. speaking of decision 2012, republican candidate mitt romney raking in millions of dollars here in the bay area. he is waking up in burlingame after a stope in hillsborough last night. here's the twist, the money he collects here will be spent elsewhere. from hillsborough, one of the more upscale cities on the peninsula. >> he focused on his vision for the country and a five-step program for training and getting our education to be the best education chlt. >> mitt romney supporters lead a fund raiser energized by the talk about getting america back

to work. the republican candidate waved to president obama supporters at the motorcade entered the estate. >> i'm a small business owner for obama. >> they urged voters to give president obama four more years. >> we continue to work for small businesses. >> romney supporters lined the streets near the fund-raiser, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man they want in the white house. george volunteered to help his candidates. >> he had a track record of success. >> they paid from 1,000 to $50,000 to attend, raising millions he spent where the race is close. the tax return will be a new topic. it reveals the romneys paid nearly $2 million in taxes on

nearly $14 million in income, about 14%. mitt romney heads to san diego for another fund-raiser. president barack obama will be in wisconsin, trying to shore up support. it will be his first visit since february. he will return to the bay area on october 8th for another round of fund-raising here. the space shuttle endeavor is grounded in southern california for good. the workforce of nasa's fleet took its final flight piggy back on a boeing 747 and landed at lax where it is parked and spend several weeks in a hangar undergoing preparations for the slow speed journey to the science center. before landing at lax, the shuttle flew past several land

amount of 400 pound tryinger was malled and will not be euthanized. it happened yesterday at the bronx zoo. the man suffered bites and punctures and a broken arm and leg. >> the siberian tiger is one of several that rotates in and out of the exhibit. only visible to the public by monorail and that's where the 25-year-old was in the last car of the popular ride at 3:00 on friday when suddenly he jumped. >> he made a deliberate effort. it was not by accident. >> he hurdled the monorail bar and the tiger exhibit fence 17 feet below. >> the tiger did nothing wrong. >> the 11-year-old tiger bit him on his arms and legs and back and somehow spared his life. >> i think it's to say the tiger

let's go to anthony who is in for rob and it's the first day of fall, although it will feel more like the last day of summer. >> you're right. temperatures will feel more like summer than fall. sometimes in the meteorological world, these things take time. fall does begin today and we want to get you up to speed with the fallout look. this is an issue. we have been issued a below average fallout look. basically the repercussions of that is because we are under el nino watch. because of that watch, we will be keeping an eye on two things. those two things will be below average temperatures and a wetter rain season. the seven-day forecast we don't have any rain to talk about. we will keep our fingers crossed. as far as temperatures go this morning, it's chilly in the north bay. 40s. 52 down in san jose.

not bad in the south bay. a series of systems scooting across the pacific. none of them will affect us because an area of high pressure is off the coast. the winds shift out of the north and that will be warmer than we have been as this trough is swinging through the rockies that takes a dip across nevada. it won't affect us, but because it moves close to us, our wind at the coast will be breezy. we are talking about an offshore wind. temperatures and wind will be back in the 80s and down towards the south and north bay. it will feel more like summer on this first full day of fall. 83 in san jose. 90 in antioch and it will be warm in the east bay. the same for them. san francisco is not too bad. 70 degrees for seasonal averages

expected to be back in the 60s. if you are making plans to head to at&t park this evening, they are taking on the padres and the giants. temperatures will be comfortable and not a lot of fog. keep your eye out for that and otherwise we are hoping for the win. let's hear about the magic numbers. i'm not going to touch that. i will leave it up to henry wofford. we will talk more about that later. the seven-day forecast with more 80s in the forecast. get my jaw together. otherwise looks like summer even though it is fall on the calend calendar. >> now to a story you will only see on nbc bay area. a group of disabled war veterans are fighting a battle to keep their homes. the men are living in an army base turned national park. as joe shows us, the landlord that is kicking them out is the

military. >> at the northern end of the golden gate bridge tucked into a cove is the former army base of fort baker. now a national park, the buildings have been returned to their original glory. in an unusual arrangement, the service leaves the marina to travis air force base, this marina this man calls home. >> my neighbors are sea lions and seals and sea birds. it's a really nice place to live if you like privacy. >> for more than five years, he and several other disabled veterans lived aboard sail boats in the travis marina. he suffered from ptsb and the effects of agent orange from vietnam, the solitude fits like a warm sweater. >> when are i come back down in here with a room with a lot of people in it, it's peaceful

here. >> last december, the air force gave notice to him and three others that they had until the end of september to get out. the letters to the veterans at travis air fore base said the marina is not for extended residencies and needs repairs leaving people like these men with noplace to go. >> i can't understand why they are chasing the only three disabled vets. we haven't been called on. >> the bay area congressman petitioned the department to allow the men to stay and told it was impossible. the attorney is also trying to persuade the government to make an exception for the vets. >> they went through the ravages of war. ptsd and all kinds of disabilities and on a fixed

a consumer alert from cereal to crackers to baby food. new studies show rice contains arsenic, a chemical linked to cancer. here's jeff rosen. >> rice is a staple, but now consumer reports with a now alert. finding elevated levels of arsenic in rice testing 200 samples of the most popular brands. >> this is not a matter of trace amounts. these are moderately high levels. >> they announced similar results today while the health effects in food are still unknown, arsenic is say level one carcinogen that can cause lung, skin, and bladder cancer. still they say rice is safe. >> we have not seen established

health concerns that can be pointed to as a result of people eating rice. >> arsenic has been linked to cancer and nothing said arsenic in food will link to the cancer, but is that something you want to wait for? >> they can only go with what they know and we know rice is a nutritious and healthy food. >> consumer reports found elevated levels in apple and grape juice. while the government regulates arsenic in drinking water, there no standards for juice, rice, or any other food? >> the message is it's time to start setting a standard for arsenic in food. >> the fda said more testing is needed. matt lauer spoke with the commissioner. >> why not set limits right now? >> we have a varied diet. i am a mom and i recommend moderation in what they eat.

cashing in in california. republican presidential candidate mitt romney is waking up in the bay area after a long night of fund-raising. supporters paid $1,000 to $50,000 to attend the event. romney raised millions of dollars that he will spend in states where the race for the white house is close. a few romney supporters and protesters lined the streets. >> i'm a small business owner for obama. >> he has a track record of success in business and governance. >> romney's golden state tour will continue today. he departs burlingame this morning for san diego. >> a private plane carrying mitt romney's wife ann romney was forced to make an emergency landing in colorado yesterday afternoon. the plane was flying from nebraska to santa monica when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit. this was a photo tweeted by a romney spokesperson.

a romney spokesperson said the smoke was caused by an electrical fire and no one was hurt. president barack obama will be in wisconsin to shore up support in that key state. it will be his first visit there since february. president obama has scheduled one more fund-raising swing to the bay area. he will be here october 8th. >> new this morning, a shallow earthquake rattled near santa rosa at 1:23 this morning. the epicenter three miles from the geyser. five miles from anderson springs and 26 miles from santa rosa proper. over the past several days there have been two earthquakes with magnitude 2.0 or greater nearby. one city wants to make sure neighbors are ready in case of an earthquake there. the city is hosting quakeville 2012. organizers are trying to help people prepare for the big one. the event will be held at palo

alto's community center at middlefield road. the exercise begin this is afternoon at 2:00. the event is free and everyone is invited to participate. protest over a police shooting in the mission neighborhood turned violent. this is a live look where there was extra police presence during the demonstration. protesters gathered in dolores park and marched through the neighborhood, vandalizing banks and breaking windows and spray painting. we are learning more about thursday night's officer-involved shooting allegedly involving this weapon. police say the suspected gang member pointed a gun at an officer and it was a tech 9 machine pistol. the officer shot the suspect after a short foot chase in the mission district near 14th street. the suspect was on parole for an assault with a deadly weapon wkz prior. the 22-year-old suffered

nonlife-threatening injuries. they targeted the station and say they were upset with what they call excessive use of force. they vandalized the building and riot police arrive and the crowd disbursed. >> a stranger danger alert as police warn parents to be cautious after a man tried to kidnap a 9-year-old girl from her own school. the attempted kidnapping happened around 2:45 yesterday at park side elementary school. investigators say the girl managed to escape a short distance away and is now with her family and her alleged kidnapper is still on the loose. right now police are working to track him down. they are investigating whether this is connected to two other incidents. a stranger was oust campus and a stranger offered alcohol to students.

if you know anything about any of the three incidents, call police. >> three people are behind bars thanks to an alert neighbor. they arrested two teen boys in san francisco yesterday. officers say they got a call from a neighbor about a suspicious car driving slowly through the neighborhood. police found the car and pulled it over and whale they were searching found what is believed to be stolen property. police say the three could be responsible for a strong of burglaries in belmont and san mateo. a sad update this morning in the search for a missing san mateo man. the body of 69-year-old charlie doud was found bia rail way worker in nebraska. the retired firefighter disappeared last week while traveling to chicago by train. relatives say they believe he may have fallen off the train after being disoriented because of his medication. a passenger reported seeing him standing near a train door which

can to support the owner as she deals with the death of her 18-year-old son, kyle nolan. the triplet travelled to peru to attend a 10-day spiritual retreat and never returned. turns out he was buried. they claimed he died after drinking a hallucinagenic tea. >> he didn't know what he wanted. his brother and sister were in college. he was trying to figure it out. >> the coworkers started a donation drive and now the family may be victimized again. >> she looked like she wanted to be a friend. she was looking for a veterinarian. >> the office manager described the woman who came in yesterday pretending she wanted to make an appointment for her dog. after chatting for 30 minutes, she waited for her to turn her back before she grabbed dot nation box and took off. >> i saw the box was gone and

after the discovery of a dead bird infected with west nile virus near san francisco city college. this is only the third bird to test positive since 2007 and there have been no human cases since 2005, but everyone is urged to eliminate standing water just in case. across the state so far this year, six people died from west nile virus. much more ahead on today in the bay, still to come, thousands crash a party invitation posted on facebook. where it happened and what may have turned the party into a riot.

not in a good way. the 16-year-old facebook invitation drew thousands to what was planned to be a small celebration. the party grew after the invitation went viral on the internet. some people showed up in t-shirts and that was about an out of control party. trash littered the street and many windows were smashed. 34 people were arrested. >> in the mideast, violence erupted at the border and kills an israeli soldier and three gunmen. it happened when three militants slipped across the border from the peninsula and st the soldier. the israeli army said a second soldier was wounded before the three armed militants were shot dead. it was at least a fourth cross border attack in a little over a year. israel is concerned that security has faulted since the

the greater bay area. this is the nbc bay area weather center and the coolest in the north bay where they have been chilly over the past week back into the mid 40s in many locations. even to the south bay a& 52 degrees in san jose. we don't have much to talk about on the weather map, but one thing i want you to look at is the cloud cover. the circulation around the high pressure that continues to keep up warm. winds out of the north and the normal wind will allow for temperatures to warm into the 80s in many locations at the coast with the offshore wind. it will feel more like summer than fall even though the calendar switch over. same for tomorrow with 70s and 80s. one thing you heard with the
