the streets of athens as protesters take on police. and keep that summer wardrobe handy. today, not too bad. upper 80s, inland. 70s, bay side. 60s at the coast. blazing hot days ahead. we'll take you through your full force cast. as we get ready to get out there on wednesday, we had some unusual slowing for highway 92. i'll show you the latest on this backup coming up. >> right now, we'll show you a live look over san jose. the cool before the heat wave outside on this wednesday, september 26th. this is "today in the bay." right now, it is 6:00 on the nose. happy to have you with us. happening now in greece but affecting financial markets around the world, protesters take on police. in athens, riot police out in force, trying to stop a mass

anti-government rally. riot police used tear gas, pepper spray, against scores of demonstrators. after all the violence broke out. it happened near parliament. police say protesters have hurled molotov cocktails, bottle, at officers. about 50,000 people actually joined in today's march in central athens to strike against new austerity measures. the country is in the midst of a financial crisis and is threatening to take the rest of the european union with it. also developing overnight, closer to home, in san jose. beaten up while out on his break outside a popular bay area restaurant. this morning, a chech remains hospitalized. a chef remains hospitalized. police are trying to find the person who sent him to the hospital. we are live in san jose with all the details. >> reporter: there are still so many unanswered questions about what actually happened overnight in east san jose. police still trying to figure

out if this man was shot or stabbed. they're still looking for the suspect or suspects wanted in this case. it happened outside las palapas restaurant. police say the chef was on his break. standing outside the restaurant when he was jumped. police arrive to find him on the ground with serious head injuries. he was taken to the hospital where he is, this morning, his exact condition is not being re released. police are trying to find out how many suspects they're actually looking for. now, the crime happened in an area that has been plagued with violence. you may recall just last month a man was stabbed to death inside the safeway on story road. that safe way is only a half mile from last night's incident. once again, no arrests have been made in this latest crime to hit east san jose. police say they are still trying to figure out if this attack was

gang related. live at police headquarters in san jose, "today in the bay." this morning, a man accused of trying to poison his girlfriend sought is out of jai. the woman lives at a nursing home. police arrested the man on saturday. he was accused of trying to slowly poison his girlfriend by bringing her bottled water laced with chlorine. police say he told her it was vitamin water. lock ridge made his first court appearance yesterday. he was released pending further investigation. a second site connected to a convicted serial killer may soon be dug up looking for more human remains. this week, the fbi returning to the town to inspect a new site off of flood road. the fbi says it may uncover more bodies from a drug fueled killing spree by wesley shermantime and his partner in crime loren herzzog.

they were suspected in the death of as many as 15 people from the 1984 to 1998. the fbi has not said when or if it plans to dig up the area. this morning, a man accused kidnapping and killing sierra lamar will not appear in court as expected. the man was expected to enter a plea today. instead, he'll appear in court october 5th. garcia torres is accused kidnapping the 15-year-old as she walked to a school bus stop in morgan hill last spring. the body was never found but the district attorney plans to move forward with murder charges anyway. >> garcia torres will not be in court today but her father will be. charged with sex crimes against two female relatives. the alleged crimes happened in the same area of san martin in the home where his son lived. if convicted, fernandez will spend the rest of his life in

prison. safety concerns prompting big changes at an elementary school on the peninsula. parkside elementary, where a child was recently been abducted. live with more details on what the school is trying to do to keep students safe. >> reporter: parents have a lot questions about how last friday this man was able to get on to the school grounds here at parkside elementary, grope a 9-year-old student, and then abduct her from campus. later this morning at 8:30, the chief of police and the school superintendent will meet with parents to address their concerns. the school has already installed a new locked gate. will be installing surveillance cameras. that was something in the works prior to friday's abduction. all the principals are also in the district reviewing their safety procedures. police have arrested bradley morasic of san francisco on friday. the 25-year-old man allegedly

followed this 9-year-old student into a school bathroom, glorope her below the waist, then covered her mouth as he dragged her to a house a couple block, away. she was able to escape by kicking and throwing rocks at him. >> she took steps following advice her mother had given her about what to do in this situation, where anybody to try anything inappropriate with her. >> having a 9-year-old daughter, you know, being at the school, could have been her. >> the driveway tells us that earlier in the day, a school secretary escorted morasic off campus because he was acting suspicious. he traveled a mile to bay side stem academy where he allegedly asked a middle school student if she was a virgin. morasic was charged in court yesterday. he's expected to enter a plea to two felony charges and six

misdemeanors next week. happening right now, east bay police on the hunt for armed suspects who pulled the trigger during a shootout on interstate 580. a two-mile stretch of interstate 580 between stone bridge and center street was closed down for more than an hour last night while officers searched for suspects. saying the suspects inside a ford taurus got out and ran away on foot. the other car actually just got away. it is unclear if any of those suspects were injured. christy smith is gathering information on this scene. she will join us with an update coming up. this morning, san jose firefighters keeping a close watch on a house that went up in flames. a neighbor caught amazing video on his cell phone. three people were inside that home at the time. they managed to get out safely. the fire, though, ripped through the home's attic.

the highly flammable wood shingle roof. neighbors actually helped put water on the fire by using garden hoses till firefighters arrived. >> we want to make sure people are safe. trying to save my neighbor's house. >> it's hard to think of losing my home but the most important -- only thing going through my mind was the fact that all my family was out and we were safe. >> san jose fire says the fire started inside the garage. homeowners lived through for 30 years but they say they plan to rebuild. 6:08 right now. we check back in with christina loren. it is wednesday, we're heading to the weekend. it's going to be one of those weekends where you need sunblock and sunglasses. >> or you mate want to park yourself by the ocean. temperatures are going to be hot. triple digits on the way. wanted to show you.

the low clouds all around. also getting a little breeze. that's picked up for old glory to get a little flow this morning. throughout the morning, we'll see this fog get thicker before it starts to clear. we're not talking about pea soup fog but it's still enough to drop your temperatures off by a couple of degrees. we're look at a repeat performance. watch out, though, as you start to make your way up the peninsula. you drop off from san mateo all the way to san francisco. we're looking for the most widespread fog between the hours of 7:00 and 8:00. the marine layer will push back out to sea. by 11:00, mostly clear. lots of sunshine for the second half of the day. even though our daylight hours, we are dropping as we head deeper into fall. not getting as much daylight. and, hence, the cooler days we have for you next week. before we hit that cooldown, we got a heat wave to get through. temperatures flirting with triple digits. this weekend, we will show you

where, who's going to get the record heat. and finally when the rain arrives. >> hey, good morning. if you use the san mateo bridge, unusual slowing for the westbound direction. over here, you see the headli t headlights. eastbound lanes, you see one flashing moving folks over. there are apparently still crews on the bridge. even though it was scheduled to clear about 6:00. that might be enough to cause all the construction. we also see slowing along the flat section, the tail lights away from us. an extra five minutes so you can relax heading over the span but no lanes reported blocked. the cash lane, no big surprises though. 6:10. coming up, a game of red light/green light in oakland. are traffic cameras necessary for public safety or just a ploy to scoop up funds through fines? we're going to show you how one man is fighting the system just ahead.

♪ welcome back to you a good wednesday morning. a live look outside. clear over san jose this morning. summer hanging on. we'll check the temperatures with christina. 6:13. bart is releasing amazing video showing an explosion at the civic center station. the scene is in the top left-hand corner. you see a flash. then people literally falling backwards along with that cloud of smoke. play this one one more time. the top of the screen, on the right, you can see what appears to be an arc of electricity there. bart says the september 16th explosion was caused by some type of metallic debris beneath

the train. it looks like it was just disintegrated there. this one caused about $600 worth of damage. 6:14. money versus safety. that's a debate in an east bay city this morning. the city discussing weather cameras make the streets safer or just rake in dollars for the city. the debate took place at a safety meeting at city hall last night. oakland police told the committee it has the proof there have been fewer collisions in certain intersections since the cameras were installed in 2008. >> the police department's experienced some loss in terms of personnel. this is one way to help us as a force multiplier and be there at those dangerous intersections. >> but local act investments said red light cameras don't make it safer. they believe extending the timing on yellow lights is what helps down cut down on crashes. a fight brewing between oakland police. a fight sergeant says he

overheard kaplan compare oakland police officers accused misconduct to abusive priests that just get shuffled from parish to parish with no pubicment. speaking with supporters of an oakland teenager who was shot and killed in may. kaplan says the police sergeant was mistaken and the statement was from somebody else in the crowd. a san jose chef now in the hospital after a break from work turned into a brawl overnight. police say the man was standing outside a restaurant on south white road. not too far from stoi road when he was jumped. police say he has serious head injuries but so far no arrests. in san mateo park, parents meeting to discuss safety after a 9-year-old girl was abducted on campus. police say a man walked on to campus and attacked the girl in a school bathroom. the girl was able to free

herself by kicking the man. the school says it's planning to install security cameras on campus. >> the search continues for suspects in two cars after a big shootout at each other during a gun battle on interstate 580 last night. officers actually shut down the interstate for a two-mile stretch in castro valley during last night's investigation. so far, no arrests. no injuries were also reported as a result of that shootout. an announcement about those super charged stations. now apparently has hit a bump in the road. >> says it will actually sell fewer cars and needs more money. scott mcgrew has been taking a closer look. >> the terms of the loan has changed. it will have to pay back money to the government more quickly. a whole bunch of problems. tesla says it will sell more stock. 5 million shares. to raise money. investors hate when companies say that. because the new shares dilute the value of old shares. tesla said it will make about half the money is expected in

the financial quarter because of problems getting proper parts for its cars. meanwhile, let's talk about greas greece and the situation there. some video coming out of greece where we continue to monitor the situation in athens. people took to the streets to protest to new austerity measures. greece is out of money. it's well into the negative. no one will lend it more money without very high interest rates that address cannot afford. california not only sold more bonds than it expected to, it did so at a lower interest rate than it anticipated. this is good news. we probably don't want to run up more debt it tbut the fact that investors were willing to lend more money at a lower interest rate means those investors have a positive attitude about the future of california's economy. the governor of wisconsin has taken sides in the controversial call in monday night's football game. there you go. not surprisingly, he's taking

green bay's side. substitute refs made what pretty much everyone says is a terrible call. they were filling in for striking referees. wisconsin governor scott walker tweeted, after catching a few hours sleep, the packers game is still just as painful. #returntherealrefs. the irony of the governor of wisconsin supporting the union side of a labor fight. he's the guy who tried to take away collective bargaining rights from teachers and state workers. but this is the packers. >> football. it's different. >> but they make billions of dollars. pay the officials. get them back on the field. get the integrity back. >> it's interesting to see those. >> has not looked good so far. >> entirely different topic. let's move on to the weather. >> the weather, though, looks very good. >> another water cooler discussion of course. it's funny how it changed so much during football season, isn't it, ladies? good morning.

you are like cavemen and it comes out on monday nights. beautiful live shot there. 619 now. you can see the cruise ship. a lot of people getting ready to take a nice day trip into san francisco. not quite as much sunshine as yesterday. you'll notice here in san jose as well, we've got a little bit more cloud cover to start. just a touch cooler today. just a brief performance more or less maybe if you live around the inner bay, right at the coast, you'll notice that cooling. 54 in san francisco. 59 in sunnyvale. 59 to start you out in san jose. one area where we are suffering, we've got moderate air quality. we've fallen to the moderate range. still though not in the unhealthy range as we head into weekend. you'll see that vivid layer of haze as we head through saturday and sunday. especially inland. high pressure is in control. it's going to move closer to us.

it's going to get stronger. that means our temperatures are going to rise. tomorrow, noticeably warmer. the heat cranks, jumping your numbers up from about 5 to 10 degrees. 72 in freemont. 67 degrees in san francisco. by tomorrow, the mid-90s. then, the upper 90s on sunday. here's where it gets really interesting. i'm watching this system of low pressure which will likely bring us our first rain showers towards the end of next week. so the seven day is going to start with triple digits on sunday and end with rain showers when we meet back here. it's going to be an interesting setup as we head through the next seven days. >> kind interesting for the san may taio bridge right now. here's the slowing confirmed. these flashing lights removing the second of the two that we saw as far as the arrows go for construction. the arrows are on the eastbound side but the westbound side is slowing because it sees all the flashing lights. the approach as we lose the lane and the construction crews

clearing. should be another 15 minutes till both directions go smoothly because this crew will be getting off the bridge. there were a number of them clearing from 92. over on the hayward side, we see slowing as well. we travel westbound with your commute. eastbound shows a nice easy drive. a live look outside. show you some slowing for 580. not a big surprise. it actually holds pretty steady. the northbound rates through the south bay. that's actually a little bit lighter than we often see on a wednesday. the bay bridge, the metering lights are on. so we see all lanes now filling in and no surprises for the east shore. >> all right, mike, 6:21 now. a divisive issue bringing presidential candidates together. that's right, all's fair in love and politics but we'll tell you the one thing president obama and mitt romney actually agree upon just ahead.

will announce the decision before the home stand. insiders speculating it's not likely cabrera will be brought back. if you recall, was suspended 50 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. the controversy over replacing referees in the nfl continues this morning. >> the replacements not really doing a great job. now the presidential campaign and candidates arejump ing jumping into the conversation. the issue is finally something both sides can agree upon. >> talking about football. maybe there's something they can agree on. did you see this pileup in the end zone? take a look at this. this was monday night football. it was a big question as to whether they had the ball. the referee on the ground called it for the seahawks.

big upset. lots of frustration from a lot of the fans. including president obama. he tweeted about it. the president saying, nfl fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs lockout is settled soon. when asked about it, the president called it a terrible call. as he whatted the game. mitt romney said the same. paul ryan, who is from wisconsin, he's a native, big fan of the green bay packers, he said it reminded him a bit of politics. >> i mean, give me a break. it is time to get the real refs. it reminds me of president obama and the economy. if you can't get it right, it's time to get out. >> mitt romney saying we need to get the experienced referees back in the game. this lockout's been going on since june. no word yet when it might end.

good morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everybody. new this morning, we have a look at the street of athens and greece where violent clashes are breaking out right now between protesters and police. we see fires breaking out as riot police try to move in on an out of control anti-government rally. riot police there using tear gas. they also had to use pepper spray. facing off against scores of demonstrators. police say the protests there have been hurling molotov cocktails and bottles at the officers. about 50,000 people joining today's march to strike against new austerity measures. that country right now in the middle of a big-time financial crisis. >> much closer to home. we're following developing news in the south bay where a live look at san jose police headquarters where police are investigating an overnight

attack on a chef. he was said to be out on his break for just a moment last night around 11:30 when police say several people jumped him. officers arriving on the scene. it happened near white and story road. they found the man on the ground with serious injuries to his head. he was taken to a hospital. police do not know if the man was stabbed or shot. >> happening right now, the search is on this morning for an armed gun man who fired several shots into a car on a busy east bay freeway. that shooting happened on i-580. live in front of the al alimeta police station. >> reporter: the spokesperson tells me he's still trying to figure out who was involved in what happened here. the people in the car that was fired on he says they got out and ran. so they really haven't been able to speak with them about exactly

what happened out there on interstate 580 last night. but what he does know is that they left their marine ford taurus on the side of interstate 580. that car towed away. deputies will process it for evidence. we shot some video this morning in castro valley on 580 which was shut down after 7:00 p.m. in the westbound direction. that was when the shooting started. investigators say they only have vague information that another car, a white vehicle, was involved. and that another vehicle, a third car, may have actually picked those people up in the maroon ford. sheriff spokesperson says they have called area hospitals looking for anyone who may have been wounded in all of this. so far, they haven't found anyone. reporting live in alameta

county, "live in the bay." suing for sexual abuse she says she suffered while in middle school. 39-year-old kristin who filed the civil complaint yesterday. the lawsuit alleging negligence, fraud and emotional distress. saying school officials turned what she called a blind eye to the abuse. even after learning of the complaint. she says she was rained and battered more than 100 times over a four-year period. the school superintendent is not commenting on the lawsuit. the boy scouts of america now reviewing past records for possible abuse allegations. the boy scouts says it wants to make sure all allegations in the last 47 years are now reported to law enforcement. this move coming after "new york times" investigation found scout officials did not report hundreds of cases between 1970 and 1991. the paper also found 80% of abuse cases the scouts had learned directly from alleged victims and their families were never handed over to police.

6:33. a livermore couple on trial for a deadly drug lab explosion is accepting a drug deal. saying he will spend three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. and lexi hutson will get five years probation for being an accessory to the crime. they first faced a possible life sentence. police say a pair let a drugmaker use their apartment as a lab but the man died during an accidental explosion and a fire last year. the couple are due back in court next month for sentencing. this morning, san francisco reporting its very first confirmed human case of the west nile virus in seven years. the department of public health says the man is now recovering at home. it's likely he was infected by misskittos in the bay area and health experts say the u.s. is announcing its largest west nile virus since the virus arrived 13 years ago. today, nurses will picket

during rallies at two of the south bay's busiest hospitals. nurses will take to the picket lines at 19::00 this afternoon. both are in san jose. nurses at both hospitals are in the middle of contract negotiations with the hospitals. those contracts expire on sunday. 6:35 right now. if you're hoping for the fall to roll in, cooling off, no, not going to be the case. >> those pup kins are going to cook on the porch. don't put them out there too early. >> the kids don't need any more ideas. respect-o'-lanterns this year. a beautiful start over san francisco. we have clouds coming down. the only fog that will interrupt your drive right now, the thick patches, are found up in the north bay. about a mile of visibility. you'll encounter areas within half an mile to a quarter of a mile. so take it easy this morning.

at 8:00 a.m., that's when the fog will be the most wide spread. as we head through 11:00, that marine layer pushes back out to sea. we have to wait one hour longer than we did yesterday. 88 degrees today. inland, 75 by the bay. 67 at the coast. temperatures soar as of thursday. and we flirt with the triple digits into the weekend. so much to talk about. 6:36. it's getting busy out there. >> it is getting busy. i have better news for the san mo taio bridge. look at this shot from the foster city or san mateo side of the bridge. speed close to 60 in many spots as you approach that high rise. both directions moving smoothly across 92.

wells fargo online banking site up and running this morning after hackers overwhelmed the site. it's actually the latest in a string of cyberattacks on major banks across the country. a group claiming to be affiliated with islam took the site down yesterday. in a web posting, the group says the attacks will continue till an anti-muslim video is removed from the internet. wells fargo has since apologized for the outage and at this point looks like everything is back to normal. the man behind that controversy film could be in some trouble with the law for a

casualties. a bombing in damascus two months ago killed top security officials including the defense and interior ministers. a riran in the internationa spotlight at the united nations. iranian president ahmadinejad is going to address the general assembly. he will reportedly call for a new world order where the u.s. and other leading powers have a smaller role. he's also expected to talk about his country's nuclear program. ahmadinejad said it's being used for peaceful purposes but israeli leaders fear iran is building weapons of mass destruction. they're calling for delegates to boycott the speech. moving to decision 2012. president obama fresh off a major speech at the u.n. today, it's back to the campaign trail. both the president and anytime romney in ohio stood. a key swing state. the latest poll showing president obama with an eight-point lead.

he's releasing another ad today slamming romney over dismissing the 47% of americans who he says don't pay taxes. romney, meantime, is focused on job creation and of course the economy. >> for anybody who thinks that raising taxes will help grow the economy. no, his plan is to continu what he has done before. the status quo has not worked. >> romney, we can tell you, is on a two-day bus tour through ohio. his new ads will start today focusing on the struggling american families. 6:46. the supreme court will now decide the legality of certain police enforced dui tests. justices will hear arguments on whether a search warrant is needed before drunk driving suspect can have his blood drawn. the review stems from a 2010 missouri case where a driver was forced to give blood after refusing a breathalyzer test. missouri prosecutors say police need to react fast to the test because alcohol can dissolve

going to start with this picture of the bay bridge. there's a lot of moisture out there. visibility still good right at the surface. the marine layer is a little bit thicker this morn. we're going to start out with more cloud cover. a little bit cooler day ahead. 55 degrees in livermore. 54, san francisco. 52 in wine country. it's been in the 40s over the past couple of mornings. as we head throughout the day today, high pressure is going to really start to warm us up. here's what's interesting. you'll notice out here in the eastern pacific, look at this trough. this could bring us our first showers of this season. as of the end of next week. before it does so, high pressure is going to build in. as the system moves closer and closer to the bay area, we warm up each day through the upcoming weekend. temperatures are going to spike between today and tomorrow. almost a 5 to 10 degree jump in your highs today compared to where we're expecting them to end up on thursday. so, take a look at your city today. tack on an additional 5 to 10 degrees thursday.

both sides showing an increased volume. some slowing in san mateo as well. other side of the bay, mostly southbound for 880 as far as the volume build and the slowdown we see from freemont. we see speeds coming down towards the upper 50s now. through oakland, both directions build past the coliseum. north past hyde street and into downtown. a smooth flow into the plaza where the metering lights are on. low clouds but no problems for visibility. so many breaking news to tell you about. some sad news out of the entertainment world. we're just learning emmy-winning tv host and "moon river" singer andy williams has died. his family says he passed away at his home in branson, missouri, yesterday. williams was 84 years old. he had just marked his 74th year in show business this year. he is now being survived by his wife, debby, and their three children. back in november of last year, williams did announce that he had bladder cancer.

happening now, police on the hunt for armed suspects who fired dozens of shots into a car on a busy east bay freeway. the attack happened on 580 in sass castro valley near castro valley boulevard last night. live at the alamita county sheriff's office. >> reporter: good morning. a sheriff's spokesperson i spoke to by phone says they may know more later today when they have a chance to take a look at that car that was fired upon. hit with several bullets. they haven't had a chance to speak with anyone inside because they actually ran right after the shooting or may have been picked up by another car. what they do know is someone in a white car, they believe, opened fire on a maroon ford taurus in castro valley last night. a two-mile section of westbound 508 had to close for an hour during the investigation.

they say it's unclear if anyone in the ford fired back. investigators are checking area hospitals and so far they haven't found anyone. reporting live, christy smith, "today in the bay." 6:52 now. oakland police offering a cash reward. investigators say the shooting took place yesterday afternoon near international boulevard and east 16th street. the suspect shot at the victim while she was sitting inside her car. she was hit by a piece of shattered glass from a window. otherwise, fortunately, she was not seriously hurt. police say they're not sure at this point if the woman was the shooter's intended target zbloor 6:52. an update on developing news. violence in san jose. several people attacked a cook outside a restaurant. it happened in front of the las palapas restaurant. now, more with what happened.

>> reporter: good morning. this happened just about eight hours ago. so far, no arrests have been made. which of course means san jose police are still looking for the suspects or suspect wanted in this case. police were called to this scene in east san jose just after 11 last night. police say the first call was for assault and battery. that quickly upgraded to a weapons call. police arrived in front of las palapas restaurant to find a man with mysterious injuries to his head. he was lying on the ground in between the restaurant and the next door 7 eleveleven. police say he is a chef at the restaurant and was on a break when he was journal umped. >> we're not sure exactly, we just know he's in very serious condition and we're waiting for an update. >> reporter: he was taken to the hospital where his exact condition is not being released. police are trying to determine

how many suspects they are looking for. witnesses say several males took off from the scene on foot. so this morning they are continuing to speak with them to gather more information. they said these wit nesses are being cooperative, being forthcoming with information. the teen driver suspected of killing a father and his daughter due in court today. he pleaded not guilty to vehicle manslaughter. police say he was speeding in concord when he swerved, hitting nuri and his two daughters. sadly, nuri and his 9-year-old daughter died. 12-year-old hanna suffered minor injurieses in that accident. the nuri family says right now it will work with sacramento lawmaker, to pass stricter laws for people involved in deadly car crashes. last night's concord city council meeting, a memorial
