good morning. i'm kris sanchez. a deadly brawl in the south bay. the latest on the uptick in violent crime and a search for suspects. mayor's office targeted as an arson investigation becomes a federal domestic terrorism case. >> this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. looking live at the transamerica building there in san francisco and some fog in the distance. it belies what is going to happen later today. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. this is the last sunday of september. it's not going to feel like fall. >> officially it is fall.

if you're in the valleys today, you won't believe it. it will warm up quite a bit. this morning it's chilly. look at the north bay. mid 40s this morning. some spots out by santa rosa may warm by 45 degrees by this afternoon. for the coast and san francisco, patchy fog. look at the wind inland. fairfield and livermore have not seen that in a while. it's shutting down the air conditioning today. temperatures will rebound quite a bit despite a chilly start to the morning. mid to upper 90s inland. closer to 90 in san jose. san francisco and oakland, 70s and some 80s. so we're starting to warm up today. tomorrow does look even hotter. a full look at that in the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much, rob. we begin this morning with a developing story in san jose where a man is dead after a street fight. san jose police say they found the man on monterey highway near bernal around 1:00 this morning. he was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. it's unclear how that man died. we do know police are searching

for suspects. new this morning, police still searching for the weapon used to stab a san leandro man in the chest overnight. police say the weapon is sharp and perhaps an ice pick. officers say the 57-year-old man was stabbed inside his own apartment on fargo avenue near washington avenue around 1:00 this morning. the victim was able to tell police his attacker's name. a short time later police spotted the man driving his suburban in oakland. police say that he tried to flee but was eventually arrested at foothill boulevard and stanley avenue after a short chase. that stabbing victim is expected to survive. federal agents are stepping in to investigate a fire in vallejo that would be a case of domestic terrorism. it burned the offices of the city's mayor. investigators are trying to figure out who might want to target that mayor and why.

>> when vallejo mayor saw the magnitude of the damage to the law office he shares with attorney michael thompson, he couldn't help but shed a few tears. the fire was reported at about 1:30 saturday morning at the small office building just across from the solano county superior court. they believe someone set the fire intentionally. >> suspicious fire at this time. it's under investigation. we hopefully will have more information in the coming days. >> vallejo police said the same building has been targeted by vandals in the past few months who have thrown rocks through windows. and while investigators search for a motive for the fire, they say they're now looking at all of the possibilities including if mayor davis has any political enemies who would want to target him. >> the fact that it involves the mayor of vallejo and the fact that he's a high profile figure

in the city could be classified as a form of domestic terrorism. >> police say it's also possible the attorney who shares the office, michael thompson, could have been the target. both men are high profile figures in the community, which is why police say they're asking for help from the fbi. investigators say surveillance footage from cameras at the courthouse across the street could help them figure out who set the fire. >> we're in the process of evaluating those cameras and video footage from those cameras to determine if there's any evidentiary value. >> and police won't say if they have suspects in custody at this point but he they asking for the public's help. if you saw anything suspicious last night, you are asked to call police. in san jose, a warehouse is now reduced to a pile of rubble as investigators try to figure out the cause of a fast moving fire there. dozens of firefighters worked for hours to put out that fire on saturday afternoon near the

intersection of heading and pent street. the warehouse was abandoned some time ago so the danger was to a nearby apartment building. the wind was blowing sparks in that direction but fortunately nothing was sparked and no one was hurt. pg&e is blaming a squirrel for knocking out power to some 11,000 homes and businesses in the oakland and berkeley hills saturday afternoon. it was about 5:00 when the squirrel somehow got into some equipment at a pg&e substation and caused the outage. it took crews an hour and a half to restore power and then pg&e had to shut power down again for about 20 minutes at 8:00 to make another repair. pg&e says that the squirrel that caused all of the trouble did not survive. owners of a car room in san jose are suing the city. the city permit process pushed back the grand opening four

september -- the last sunday of september but we are expecting a blast of heat before things start to cool down. we'll check with rob in just a little bit. new this morning, inside attack. at least four people including two americans are dead after an afghan soldier turned himself on his allies. the shooting happened at an afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint u.s. afghan base in wardak province. afghan soldiers and police and militants wearing uniforms have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year. the youngest prisoner held at the u.s. guantanamo prison is waking up in canada this morning. the 26 year old was transferred overnight from cuba to his native canada. he will serve out the remainder of his eight-year sentence there. he was captured in afghanistan back in 2002. prosecutors say he was involved in a firefight which resulted in

the death of a u.s. soldier. he pled guilty at a 2010 military trial. he was the youngest prisoner and last from the western world. this morning iranian newspapers say tehran plans to create its own search engine and e-mail service. the move comes after the country considers lifting a ban on gmail. google's search engine is still available. they say they want to launch their own censored version of the internet to curb western influence. still ahead on "today in the bay," messing with texas. an overnight quake with an unlikely epicenter just ahead and video of a car lifted by a powerful gust coming up. >> pretty wild conditions there across the pacific. here it is the lack of sea breeze or any wind that's going to lead to warming around the bay area today. we'll talk about 90s in your forecast when we come right back.

new this morning, powerful winds from typhoon lifted this car yesterday. the island was hit hard by gusts recorded at more than 100 miles per hour. at least 50 people are hurt. most of the cities there are still without power. the typhoon is expected to hit tokyo later tonight. dallas, texas, shaken overnight by a couple of small earthquakes. a magnitude 3.4 quake rattled two miles north of the dallas suburb of irving followed then by a smaller 3.1 quake. they're not super big. there's no report of damage or injuries but the dallas-ft. worth airport continued operations without any destruction and people that live in the area say they were pretty shocked. >> almost like a wall true the

floor. i left california. i'm done with earthquakes. it was in the 1990s san francisco earthquake and 1994 north ridge earthquake. i felt like earthquakes have been following me. here i am in texas. >> shaking would be felt 15 to 20 miles away from the epicenter. an elderly woman is lucky to be alive after bystanders saved her life. take a look at the home video of the woman who somehow lost control of her car and ended up in a harbor in portland, maine, back on friday. several people plunged into the chilly water to rescue her including police and firefighters who happened to be nearby. paramedics used ropes to bring the driver and everyone else to safety. >> without efforts of bystanders and police officers, it might have been a different outcome. >> the 84-year-old driver was badly hurt but police say she is in stable condition. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. let's check in with rob mayeda

who has a look at a forecast that is pretty hot for today. >> one of those weird days throughout the bay area where some places are waking up to the low to mid 40s but have a chance to get close to 90 by the afternoon. here's the gorgeous view from foster city camera looking out across the bay. notice absence of low clouds. haven't spilled in across the entire bay area this morning unlike yesterday and as that marine layer continues to compress, we'll see temperatures climbing quite a bit in the inland valleys. temperatures right now 40s and 50s outside. santa rosa down to 44 degrees this morning. it's been chilly there. 45 in novato. about 53 in san francisco. oakland, 48 degrees. look at the winds inland. you can see not much of a breeze at all around fairfield and livermore so despite chilly start afternoon temperatures in the inland valleys warming quickly. mid to upper 90s inland. tomorrow warmer. we'll start the day warmer. it's like a running start to the temperatures and we'll see

things starting to cool by midweek. some patchy, thick fog in a few spots around the coast. spare the air alert for inland valleys today as winds back off and that high pressure acts like a lid on top of the bay area. we don't get air pollution to mix out or head out to sacramento. air quality will be an issue today. may see another spare the air alert for tomorrow. satellite radar view shows you that things have cleared out. high pressure building in reaching maximum strength in the next 36 hours. underneath the dome of high pressure, marine layer which kept things comfortable yesterday will get squished down during the day today. some 90s across inland valleys today and by tomorrow we could get close to some above 100-degree temperatures toward the tri-valley. notice lack of clouds on the coast. we have them there now. through the afternoon we should see north winds helping to mix in drier air and break up clouds and led to warming around the bay area close to 90 in san

jose. hottest places in the bay area, sunol, pleasanton, numbers upper 90s. mid 90s around dublin. toward oakland, temperatures in the low 80s for afternoon. should be 70s around san francisco. 70s and 80s around the peninsula. upper 80s to near 90 in parts of the north bay today. we'll see temperatures warming up a couple more degrees tomorrow and this mini heat spell breaks on wednesday. you'll see cooling temperatures. here's the interesting part. friday into saturday big cooldown. we're talking about 30 degrees cooler in a few spots. may even see some mountain showers next weekend. if you like the heat. >> we are paying attention to next weekend's forecast because it's san jose rock 'n' roll half marathon. thousands of people will take to the seats for that annual event. it could make a difference between your personal best and your personal worst what you eat

game last spring but his mom hill never forget. >> the guy hit him from underneath and he just fell back. he was out. >> reporter: the concussion sidelined vinny for eight months. >> he basically took it easy but not the kind of easy that maybe he should have. >> physical rest is just as important as mental rest in allowing the brain to recover. if we do that at the beginning, we're shortening the recovery and reducing the risk of longer term problems during the school year. >> i knew if i got one more bad one, i was pretty much done. >> reporter: that's exactly what happened when he returned to the lacrosse field this spring. >> i got hit from behind. i remember looking up from the ground after that and not remembering where i was and what happened. >> reporter: vinny and his family were told to permanently

retire from sports he loved, lacrosse and football. >> my dad took it hard. he was my coach. >> i had guilt. maybe i should have taken him out sooner. >> reporter: traumatic brain injuries rose from 153,000 in 2001 to 250,000 in 2009 and when it happens to young athletes, concussions can be even more dangerous. >> there are many developmental things that are occurring that make them more sensitive to injury and takes them longer to recover. >> reporter: as co-founder of the california concussion coalition, the organization is on a mission not to prevent concussions but educate parents, coaches and trainers about the symptoms which include headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, seeing stars and ringing ears. this 14 year old suffered her first concussion earlier this year during a soccer practice and she and her parents took immediate action giving her brain plenty of time to heal.

targeted the offices in the last couple months. >> the fact that it involves the mayor of vallejo, the fact that he's a high profile figure in the city, it could be classified as a form of domestic terrorism. >> investigators say they will go over video surveillance from a courthouse across the street to help figure out who might have set that fire. a mother accused of ditching her daughter during a shoplifting attempt is about to be brought back to the bay area. officers will bring 38-year-old marcy keelin to the bay area tomorrow from nevada. officers arrested her at a motel late friday. keelin is accused of using her 10-year-old daughter as an accomplice during a shoplifting attempt at a morgan hill safeway. she drove off leaving her daughter to answer to police. the girl is now in custody of her grandmother. a convicted serial killer is speaking out about seeing a mass

grave site for the first time in a decade. he led fbi agents to the grave site in the city of linden earlier this year. he and an accomplice were convicted of going on a drug fuelled killing spree in the 1980s and 1990s in a jail cell interview from death row, he says at times i feel like it's not worth it referring to telling the fbi where bodies are. in my heart, i know it's right. he told a bounty hunter about the grave sites earlier this year in exchange for money. richmond police are looking into two fights that allegedly involved a city councilman. the 68 year old was arrested thursday after getting into a scuffle with an activist. he claims the councilman hit him as he was walking away from an argument. the 72-year-old moore claims he was assaulted. the fight happened in front of a police officer who cited both men. last week the councilman was accused of another assault.

investigators are not releasing details in that incident. he has a reputation for aggressive politics. he is not running for re-election this year. downtown san francisco is getting ready for a major conference that is expected to cause some major traffic delays. oracle world will be going on today through wednesday and nearly 50,000 people are expected to attend the conference. parts of howard and taylor streets are scheduled to be closed. several muni lines are being rerouted. in other words, plan for traffic delays south of market near the center. caltrans plans to shut down the san mateo bridge for two weekends next month. they will repair a cracked support beam under the roadway discovered back in 2010. the bridge is set to be closed from 10:00 in the evening to 5:00 in the morning october 19th through the 22nd and then again between the same hours from october 26th through the 29th.

the dumbarton bridge is the best alternative for drivers looking to get around the bay. construction crews say the 405 freeway will reopen in time for the monday morning commute despite an unplanned work stop. yesterday afternoon a chunk of the bridge fell along the freeway. no one was hurt but did stop the work for a while. the bridge is going to be destroyed to widen the 405 which is one of the busiest freeways in the country. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, more money for your time on the job. we'll tell you about the bay area counties that are paying top dollar for your work.

the folks can make as much as $50,000 a day by hitting a couple countries. >> gary davis says the scheme is successful because often the ransom note looks like an official notice from the fbi accusing you of a crime. >> they try to say you have inappropriate content. you have stolen content. that scares people even if they've never done it which in most cases they haven't feel the fbi said we found child pornography on your screen so we locked it. >> that's why they pay up? >> that's why they pay. >> davis says never pay a ransom even if you do regain access to your computer, the hackers have probably dropped other viruses on your system. they have goen rown so quickly fbi just posted a warning on its internet crime website. >> i have been up late just trying to solve the problem.

week against a new leader of the catholic church in san francisco. 56-year-old bishop is a renowned conservative leader who led the fight against same-sex marriage in california. he will officially become the leader of the archdiocese in san francisco on thursday. gay rights groups will protest outside of the ceremony. experts say the vatican is sending a message by placing him in san francisco, the heart of the gay rights movement. overseas in italy, a trial continues this week but during open testimony yesterday pope benedict xvi's former butler confessed to charges against him. he admitted stealing and leaking private documents from the pope's apartment. he says he wanted to expose the alleged corruption surrounding the catholic church. despite the intense media attention, he did not show much attention. >> he was occasionally a little

san francisco. we can see ta nice, mild day today. it will feel like fall in a couple of days. expect plenty of runners and street closures in san francisco today. the bridge to bridge run will begin at 9:00 this morning at the ferry building. the race route goes up the embarcadero to ft. mason and to crissy field. for a full list of street closures if case you want to cheer people on or you want to avoid it, go to bridge to bridge.com. rob mayeda is here with a look at our forecast that's probably going to be very nice for a run if you get it in early. >> even around san francisco we're going to see temperatures warming up quite a bit. 70s and 80s around the peninsula today and for places that don't have air conditioning, that's going to feel toasty even near the bay. it's cold around santa rosa down to 44 degrees. one of those afternoons where by

later on today you'll add almost 44 degrees to your temperatures in the north bay under the clear skies and the sea breeze is really starting to back off now. look at that into fairfield and livermore. not much happening. we're getting the marine layer getting squished down and temperatures climbing about 5 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. still areas of low clouds and thick fog along the coastline. inland spots warming up quickly today. tomorrow should be the hottest day out by the tri-valley and then midweek cooling and then big-time cooling as we approach next weekend. air quality not so good today because of the winds back off and high pressure builds in and acts like a lid on top of the bay area. traps air pollution. we see that in the north bay, east bay and south bay valleys today. spare the air day today and for tomorrow as well. there is lack of weather systems here. high pressure acting like a shield keeping the storm track to the north and under the ridge

we'll see 90s for east bay valleys and around the south bay and as that marine layer continues to get squished down even more tomorrow, should see more 90s and probably close to 100 degrees especially out by livermore, sunol and pleasanton for monday. near 90 in san jose. 80s closer to the water of the inner bay. mid 90s south down toward morgan hill. mid to upper 90s around pleasanton and livermore and numbers even toward oakland should see some 80s today. 70s and 80s around the peninsula and the coast. skies clear. north winds starting to break up the low clouds for the afternoon. 80s and 90s there in the north bay. the tale of two weeks in the weather. hot temperatures inland through tuesday. things start to make a turn for the cooler on wednesday and thursday. then look at friday and saturday. now this is making me think we're actually in fall. you get roller coaster weeks of weather with hot temperatures crashing down into the 70s by next weekend and some models try to toss some mountain showers too. we'll be watching that this time
