right now -- a look at san francisco the place to be this weekend, the blue angels are flying overhead, america's cup is taking the waters and there's bluegrass music in the air. plus, baseball fans are plenty excited as well. it's all part of the bay's big weekend. and we have you covered. the news starts now. >> announcer: nbc bay area news starts now. >> good evening. i'm diane dwyer. thank you for watching this special edition of nbc bay area news. we are on early because of the notre dame football game coming up. it was a beautiful day to be out and about in san francisco, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the city for a little bit of music, some baseball, and activities.

we have crews throughout the city. let's begin with monti francis. he is along the waterfront. hello, monti. >> reporter: good afternoon, the blue angels took to the sky just about 15 minutes ago. for many spectators, this is what they came to see. in fact, many of these folks staked out their spots this morning. we started with the parade of ships as vessels from the u.s. navy and u.s. coast guard came under the golden gate bridge and into the bay. that was followed by the air show at 12:30, including some impressive of air ak crow bat icks. spectators were also wowed by a b-2 stealth bomber. the weather cooperated beautifully, viewing was clear as can be and not al at all hindered by the fog as in the case in years past. >> just makes you really proud to be an american and san franciscan and to be out here, just -- i just got shivers.

just beautiful. great day. >> the planes are awesome. it's a great time, a lot of people out here. it's really fun. good times. >> reporter: and fleet week is a joint tradition between the navy, marine corps and coast guard and a chance for the public to see the military vessels and aircraft on display. the air show wraps up at 4:00 so we can expect an exodus of at least one group of people just a short from now. the blue angels are still flying overhead. we'll have a wrap-up of this show atite:00. live in san francisco, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> i'm a little jealous. thank you. let's check in with anthony slaughter, keeping track of traffic around the city. most people seem to have heeded the warnings and traffic is not too bad. >> most of the congestion is actually in the city itself, but let's start with a look outside. first, this is a shot of the bay bridge. we are so used to seeing this very congested.

unbelievable, diane. this is incredible. lots of folks have heeded the warnings and are using that mass transity system that is getting foebz around the bay very well. let's get you to the map. you can see across the bay bridge things not bad. but it's in the city itself where things do start to bog down, especially on highway 1 once you're off 280 headed toward golden gate and of course where all the events are along the waterfront, that's where most of the congestion is marina district toward chinatown, even knob hill and toward at&t park. overall, it looks like the congestion will remain in the city. of course you have muni, b.a.r.t. and all the golden gate transit. no major accidents to report on now. you'll be the first to hear. >> we don't want everybody to get in their cars and start driving because it's not bad. >> xaktsly. happeni ing right now, the s are taking on the tigers in detroit. in a couple of hours, the giants

face the reds at at oond t park. amy gutierrez is at the ballpark. hi, amy. >> reporter: we certainly hope that alex smith the niners quarterback, is not stuck in traffic because he is set to throw out the ceremonial pitch for game one of of the nlds, the 25-man roster was announced, the lineups are out. only will three starters on tonight's giants team were actually part of that 2010 magical run. tonight's starting pitcher for the giants, matt cain, says this year's team is incomparable to the 2010 world series champs. >> it's definitely a lot different. this group i think has been together from the beginning and i feel like we've all had the thought of this is where we wanted to be in springing training. now we are here together and we've added some great guys to

the clubhouse. you know, they've done nothing but just fit in, you know, perfectly. and everybody's just excited about the postseason and we're just excited to get this thing going. >> reporter: it's exciting to say the least. we've got the blue angels flying over, horns are blowing from the bay, and we are going to have more for you later in sports, the skipper bruce bochy going to make an announcement bt starting rotation and who we might see take the hill in cincinnati. back to you. >> thanks, amy. amy and casey pratt are part of our team at comcast sportsnet. the game is going on right nout. casey will have a complete wrap of the game and our fanz on the newscast right after the notre dame game. the game is currently tied at 1-1. also, you can turn to comcast sportsnet for pre and postgame coverage for the a's and giants, every playoff game. that's not all that's happening.

there's also the free maufk musical festival at golden gate part. stephanie chuang is at the b.a.r.t. station where more crowds are supposed to be pouring in. >> reporter: they are, a train just got here a minute ago. you can see all the orange and black, t-shirts, caps. i've only seen one brave reds fan in the crowd. see, they're excited. we're going to go all the way. and if not, you can hear the roar above, blue angels. so much going on this weekend, we've got this guy here with maps because muni has added routes because of america's cup. talk about everything going on this weekend. the point is, of course, there will be impossible parking at a lot of these events and with gas price, the message is, leave your cars at home. ♪ >> reporter: hundreds of thousands didn't want to miss

this music. >> very excited. to have this big music festival for free in our background. it's fantastic. >> reporter: the bluegrass festival organizers say it attracts about 250,000 people. it's just one of many big draws to the city, from america's cup expecting 100,000 in attendance to fleet week more than 300,000 people each day. >> it's scary. everybody said over a million people will be coming through town. i love the blue angels and fleet week. it will look up from here. >> reporter: the bluegrass bands also have giants fever. >> it will be a nightmare. >> reporter: they plan to leave parking out of the equation. >> we'll just go down to the game. >> reporter: through the weekend, b.a.r.t. is using up to a dozen longer trains and more technicians. golden gate transit is offering extra ferries for the giants game. and even with dozens of additional muni routes, these buses are jam-packed.

>> makes for an exciting weekend. there's a lot going on, that's why san francisco is great. >> reporter: it's not great for drivers, but it's the more the merrier for everyone else. >> you want to dance? maybe not. maybe we won't, but i think we will. >> reporter: back here live at cal trains, more people getting off the trains, this isn't the only station adding more service, to carry more than triple the number of usual people between the east bay and the city and double the number between the city and vallejo. of course tomorrow is going to be even busier than today with the 49ers game, the italian heritage parade, which is supposed to add at least 300,000 more people to the city. so, again, message is try to leave your car at home and take some public transportation. live in san francisco, stephanie truong, nbc bay area news. >> don't be fooled by the light

deadly accident this morning that killed a 6-year-old that was standing outside the church. it was at st. andrew catholic church this morning. a minivan reportedly hit the girl and two adults in the parking lot of the church. crews rushed the victims to san francisco general hospital where the girl died. the two others remain hospitalized with serious injuries tonight. the driver of that minivan was not hurt and police are xegting t investigating the cause. in the east bay, a woman was found dead inside her home in hes hercules. police say the woman's husband called a neighbor to check on his wife after she failed to pick him up from the airport around 11:00 last night. neighbors went into the home on ash court. they say they found the victim, an asian woman in her 50s, lying on the ground near what appeared to be blood on the floor. police say the family's car, a 2011 sky blue subaru outback, is also missing. that's an idaho license plate number 1a1f680.

police interviewed the victim's husband, but they say he is not a person of interest at this time. so far police have not made any arrests and haven't released a motive for the killing either. in san jose, investigators are looking for the driver who hit and killed a man who was walking on highway 87 near the hp pavilion. the highway patrol says a black suv hit and killed a 22-year-old man near the park avenue exit about 8:30 last night. the pedestrian threw his skateboard at a car and then ran into traffic. the chp is not releasing the d identity of the man until the family is notified. anyone with information, please call the san jose police. still at 5:00, we continue our coverage of the big weekend. plus a campaign first for the president. the record-breaking moment, coming up.

september was a blockbuster fund-raising month for president obama. the campaign announced it raised $181 million, the highest monthly total of his reelection campaign. the monthly haul was likely boosted by tv exposure during the democratic national convention, a romney campaign spokesman says the campaign has not released its september totals just yet, but noted in a tweet that romney raised $12 million in the 48 hours after the debate. california set a dubious record today, gas prices have hit an all-time high, the state average for a gallon of unleaded is $4.61, the highest in the country and high as the state record set back in 2008. california gas prices are expected to increase for several more days before leveling off. analysts say a temporary reduction in supply triggered that increase. and right now, we want to check in on america's cup back in san francisco. big crowds are gathering to watch the semifinals, just about

you can see the san francisco camera 0 across the bay. they are making some high passes, the skies are clear over san francisco. we'll take you down to the water, show you what the america's cup teams are dealing with today. the winds have backed off quite a bit, winds 10 to 15 miles per hour, should increase into the evening but those winds backed off today, the reason why even around oakland we're seeing some 70s outside right now. we will see the sea breeze picking up closer to sunset a little bit later on this evening. 75 in fairfield, one of the warmest spots on the map, 70 in san jose, sunny up and down the peninsula and even around the coast. tomorrow, the big weekend includes football. the 49ers forecast, patchy clouds, mid-60s in the afternoon the as we wrap up fleet week, so far sto so good with the weather, tomorrow partly cloudy, temperatures in the mid-60s arn san francisco through the afternoon. some of the things we've been seeing here on the satellite view, some low clouds and mid-level clouds that were out there a little earlier. you can see the upper level low

spinning offshore here, drier air mixing down. that helps to break up the low clouds. we had some nice visibility, look how the clouds are clearing out. that's one benefit from the area of low pressure, helps clear out the skies at the low level. but as the low crosses the coast, monday we'll see an increasing chance of showers, especially along the coast. tonight and tomorrow morning, low clouds we'll wake up to, perhaps drizzle around fremont and the sunol grade. heading into the afternoon like today, clearing and partly cloudy for the afternoon. 40s and 50s overnight, patches of fog, too, possibly mist along the coast. east bay mid-70s, north bay close to 70 again. things looking pretty good as we wrap up the weekend. but stay tuned to the forecast, monday through wednesday depending on just how quickly that low scoots across the central coast, that will be the chance for us to see a few showers. so thank goodness we're 50% through the weekend, the weather looking great today.

welcome back to nbc bay area. let the fun begin. playoff baseball is back, and not a moment too soon. both the a's and giants are eager to prove they have what it takes to go the distance and win the world series this year. we'll begin with the giants, san francisco invited the cincinnati reds over for game one of the nlds this evening. giants ace matt cain starts tonight, the reds sent johnny cueto to the hill. first pitch 6:37, amy gutierrez has a preview of the giants playoff fever. >> reporter: henry, thanks so much. and fans hoping to hear about more information regarding that giants starting rotation, they're going to have to wait a little bit longer. bruce bochy held a press

conference, still hozs has not named his starters for cincinnati. we'll continue to follow that for you, one of our top story lines we're watching. another story line happening today, the return of dusty baker, of course the giants manager from '93 to 2002. he just returned back to the reds monday after suffering a mini stroke. he continues to be a beloved figure in the bay area. he's from sacramento and it's fair to say he feels the same about the folks in the bay. >> doesn't seem like ten years ago my boy was 3 years old, being pulled off the mound, lets me know i'm getting a little older. >> had a chance to talk to himful he looks good. i know he's excited about being back on the field and of course being in the playoffs, as we all are, but it's good to see him and seemed in good spirts and feels good. it's good to see that he's made a full recovery and he's back in the dugout.
