4:36 am
a little bit later this morning. i do have calls in to them. what we know is that they are testing a bone fragment that could bring an end to a very high profile missing child case that is 24 years old. 9-year-old mikayla garrett was kidnapped outside of a hayward market in 1988. according to the tribune this morning, mikayla's mom says she was told that the bone belongs to a girl between 5 and 13 years old and the 3-inch fragment is undergoing dna testing. police received a fragment from a well in lindon. it is believed to hold the bones of two killers that were suspected in the deaths of a dozen people. they earned their nickname due to their extreme meth habit. this comes after the remains of joanne hobson were returned to her family from that same well.
4:37 am
they were sent to a well and it was revealed that those bones were mixed in with other remains and that mixup may have happened during the excavation with all the heavy equipment that was used. this also opens up the possibility that there could be more victims out there. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." hercules police are headed to washington state this morning to interview a married couple caught driving a car belonging to a murdered east bay teacher. the car was owned by 55-year-old susie ko who was found stabbed to death last week in her home. police in washington arrested the couple yesterday after a pursuit. investigators are trying to figure out how the couple got ko's car and if the pair are responsible for her death. her neighbors are relieved. >> i'm glad they caught them. they finally caught somebody. that's just awesome. >> the couple, darnell and tanya washington had been on the run since late august. darnell recently escaped from a

southern california prison and his wife helped him. turning to decision 2012, here we go. the vice presidential candidates are facing off tonight for the very first and only debate before that election. there's of course a lot of pressure on joe biden after president obama's lackluster debate performance last week. the vice president has been studying up on paul ryan's book, his speeches and his budget. >> i just want to make sure that when i say these things, that i don't have the congressman say no, no, no, i don't have that position or that's not the governor's position. >> we think he's probably going to come at me like a cannon ball. but the achilles heel he has is president obama's record. >> pew research find 51% view vice president biden unfavorabliy. three to four believes the edge goes to ryan. voters are likely to be listening for two key issues
4:39 am
during tonight's debate. new analysis from the harvard school of public health shows one in five voters is concerned about health care in the upcoming election. that's the highest the issue has been rank eed since the 1992 election. the economy takes the top spot for 51% of voters. those who said health care and medicare were the most important issues were most likely to support president obama. americans are evenly divided on their approval or disapproval of the affordable care act. let's get back with christina loren. we're moving toward the weekend and a lot happening out there. >> oh, my goodness, between the game, the hail, the thunderstorms coming down in the south bay yesterday, it was quite a show. let's go ahead and show you some of the impressive highlights. we want to start with a picture of the bay bridge. as you can see here, it looks kind of clear but once that sun comes up, you'll notice those
4:40 am
cumu cumulonimbus towers. it looks like it snowed in gilroy with quarter-size hail all over the streets. i want to point out some of the highlights from yesterday. we had penny-size hail near los gatos, quarter-size hail near gilroy an dime-size hail all the way toward hollister. at this point we're still getting the same pattern. very light showers on the western-facing slopes of san jose. a little activity through san francisco. as we head throughout the day today, this will be the case, but temperatures are going to be comfortable, so a mix of sun and clouds on and off. 70 degrees livermore, 70 in gilroy and 72 in fairfield. now, thunderstorms thrive on warm air and we'll accumulate that the second half of the day so it's the afternoon where we're really keeping our eye out. let's see what mike is keeping his eye on this morning. i told you we'd look at that area i saw some slowing. this is north 101 underneath the
4:41 am
680 interchange. judging by the volume of traffic we shouldn't see a lot of problem. we don't see any incidents or any slowing, if circled the area and the yellow has moved around and usually at this time of morning the yellow in san jose means you're down to 60. that's good news. north 101 no slowing shows up as you're passing through the remainders of a construction zone. road work overnight as you're heading past cody creek but no slowing and no problem at the 85 interchange. a live look outside, we'll show you how things are shaping up across the bay as well. the taillights, that's westbound. watch the flashing lights as chp crews go all the way off into the distance. no reports of anything going on. i will track this because we don't want any problems on the bridge and so far none reported by chp. up next, a mystery in

4:46 am
five of them were fortunately able to escape. one firefighter was also hurt when the second floor gave way and he fell right through to the basement. he is listed right now in stable condition. the cause of the fire that killed five people remains under investigation. several bay area cities could see their credit rates drop and that could make it harder to borrow money for infrastructure projects. moody's says it's taken a closer look at the california cities after several declared bankruptcy. stocks falling sharply again in trading yesterday and a big change is coming to ebay. for those stories and the rest of your news before the bell, let's turn it over to cord knee reagan, live at cnbc headquarters. >> reporter: hi, good morning to you. futures are higher after yesterday's sell-off which saw

4:48 am
moved through the city. look at that, it looks like snow. no, it was buckets of hail, though. they had to get the kids out to rake it up. in a matter of minutes it was all over the roof tops as well. look at the kids. >> it sounded like boulders hitting -- like rocks, hitting the ground. >> little tiny ones and then they got increasingly larger. >> just think, last week gilroy was sweating with record-breaking temperatures. look at that, keeping tabs on all of it this morning. >> i like the california kids that are in shock. >> yeah, they're in shorts. clearing it out. >> good for them. >> it's pretty amazing to see that cell move through. >> yeah, we told you about it yesterday morning, we told you it was coming and, yeah, mother nature actually agreed for once, go figure. good morning to you. we have the same very interesting setup. we'll see these isolated cells, some strong from time to time. we're expecting the stronger
4:49 am
cells to develop this afternoon when you accumulate that day-time heating but that system of low pressure stubborn area still bringing in rain. that could make for a slick commute because in addition to the cloud cover we've got some drizzle out there this morning, some low clouds and fog, so you'll have to give yourself a little extra time this morning as we're still dealing with wet highways yesterday as well. finally an area of low pressure will move to the south but it's not going to be moving very quickly. this area of low pressure, system number two, is on the way. this one could dramatically change our pattern as of next week. we're talking about measurable precipitation, maybe half of an inch to an inch of rain. but for today, clouds and fog. overall, though, looking pretty good. 65 in redwood city, 68 degrees in san jose. as we head throughout the next couple of days it all works out like this. you keep that rain chance in the mix until early friday. i'm going to cut it off 11:00
4:50 am

4:51 am
>> while the boy scouts organization may be turning a cold shoulder, many boy scouts are reaching out. >> so far 170 people have pledged me to send me their eagle pin and 50 of them from my own troop. >> what a cool tribute. at the end ellen announcing she had a little something special for andresen. it's not an eagle gift but it's quite the incredible gift. you can watch ellen today at 4:00 on nbc bay area. >> i don't even know what it is. >> i'm tuning in. >> very good. up next, a popular cereal on that recall list. millions of boxes of frosted mini wheats possibly contaminated. plus a big birthday. how long has the cd been around? take a guess. >> so now my opportunity to feel really old. here's the bay bridge looking really good. we'll show you another bridge coming up.

4:56 am
signaling road crews in the eastbound direction. there will be a little slowing. maps on the peninsula show us no real slowing through san mateo. we do have more construction through the san mateo hills but 92 moves smoothly between 101 and 280. there you go with that construction over the bridge but over on the east bayside a smooth drive coming out of castro valley. here on my maps you see some green. that's the rainfall. there may be wet roads and wet pavement for 580 so keep that in mind. >> here we go, mike. the cd celebrates its 30th birthday. sony introduced the compact disk 30 years ago this month. music lovers certainly fell in love. they sounded so much cleaner than vinyl records. but most people download their music to their phones and it pods. do you remember who put out that first cd? >> i do. >> do you? >> billy joel. >> very good.
