friday. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. we are following breaking news happening right now in san francisco where a three-alarm fire is ripping through a restaurant this morning. we do have a crew on the way. we're being told this fire is at the squat and gobble restaurant in westportal and that happens to be right across the street from the west portal muni station where the k, l and m lines are all passing through there. we checked with muni and trains at that station are not being affected. that's what they are telling us. we do have a crew on the way to that scene. christie smith will be there to give us updates on this. a big-time fire and we'll keep you posted. also new this morning, san jose firefighters are on the scene of a house fire that sent two people to the hospital. the two-alarm fire broke out at a home on carlton avenue just before 4:00 this morning. this is near union avenue and close to los gatos memorial park.

bob redell is live at the scene with the very latest. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. a relative tells us that smoke awoke the married couple who lives in what used to be this home here on carlton avenue a little bit before 4:00 this morning. they escaped the house yelling "fire, fire." this fire appears to have started in the kitchenness on the right side of the home where it's lit up right now. a neighbor tried to put out the fire with a garden hose until the fire department arrived but as you can see no such luck. that couple is in the hospital being treated with burns. the man with burns to his head. the good news is these injuries are not life-threatening. the fire was particularly challenging for the fire department. power lines prevented the aerial hose from getting a good angle on the fire. and the homeowner also had notified them there was live ammunition inside so firefighters had to keep their distance, make sure that they had eye protection on, basically

forcing them into a defensive position. >> you know, it's just gut wrenching to see your family's house just gutted like this, it's nuts. so -- yeah, not fun to see. >> reporter: that's the brother-in-law of the man who lives at this home who had spoken with his relatives. again, they are in the hospital, the injuries are not life threatening although they are in his words freaked out. understandably, given the condition of their home right now. the fire is knocked out. what has been ongoing here this morning for the past hour or so are these flare-ups. there have been some flames that keep popping up in different parts of the house, but judging on the fact that one of the trucks just pulled out during the past minute or so, i'm going to have to assume that they feel like they have got that under control as far as the flare-ups. an investigator was already out here. she went into the home and said the fire is not suspicious, but as far as what caused it, that

part is still under investigation. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." we move to a developing story in san jose where a homicide investigation is under way at this hour. this all happened at rogers avenue near the 880/101 interchange outside a neat ma kne -- vietnamese coffee house and bar. a man was shot there at least one time. the man died 15 minutes after officers arrived. >> right now we don't have a motive for the murder. we don't have any suspects in custody. and right now investigators are currently following up on leads on the crime. >> and police are asking anybody who may have some kind of information on this area at the time of the incident to please give them a call. well, a failing grade for bay area schools, at least in the eyes of the federal government. the california department of education saying this year only 26% of the state's 10,000 plus

schools has actually met the very tough standards of the no child left behind act, but we also have good news to report in this story. state test scores are on the rise this year for the very first time. more than half of the state schools met or surpassed the state's target score for academic achievement. 6:05. new this morning, the nobel peace prize has been awarded to the european union. the nobel peace prize committee made its announcement early this morning. they cited the you knunion's contributions to human rights. the committee dismissed the european union's current economic troubles, stating those concerns were separate from the work the union has done to promote peace between european countries. now to decision 2012. yes, indeed, they are changing the tempo. they worked this one up. the reviews are in and the vice presidential candidates come out swinging during their debate in kentucky.

>> what they have done for us, including your son, beau. >> republican paul ryan taking the initial swing at vice president joe biden in the first question of that debate which focused on the september attack in libya that killed four americans, including u.s. ambassador chris stevens. >> what we are watching on our tv screens is the unraveling of the obama foreign policy, which is making it more chaotic and us less safe. >> with all due respecting that's a bunch of mularkey. >> we see this administration trying to water down snangsz congress. >> that sparring was going on the entire 90 minutes, back and forth, a very big departure from last week's presidential campaign which many said lacked fire and energy. coming up we'll have a look at the infamous video recorded on the 47%. here in the bay area the

vice presidential debate had to compete with baseball on tv. here they watched the game and watched the debate which was on with closed captioning right next to the game. >> the difference is the winner of the election will not be known for a few days but sadly the a's gave it their all but their fate has been sealed. >> here's a ground ball. the detroit tigers are headed to the american league championship series and the magical season for the oakland a's has come to an end. >> and the celebration on field was going off. it wasn't the team the fans wanted to see doing that party dance. the measuamerican league champip series goes to detroit. but the oakland athletics holding their heads high. >> everybody hates that it has to end right now. i just want to just thank all the fans. they did a fantastic job. >> they were behind us the whole time. you couldn't ask for any more from the crowd.

all i can say now is i hope to see crowds like that at every game game next year. >> as the a's pack it up the tigers will play either the orioles or the yankees. hope that a bay area baseball team will win the world series is not over. >> a swing and a miss and romo strikes out rowen. the san francisco giants will advance to the nlcs. >> the giants pull off a 6-3 win against the reds thanks to a grand slam by buster posey. the giants are staying in cincinnati pending the outcome of today's cardinals/nationals game. if the nationals win, the giants fly to washington, d.c. if the cardinals win, the giants come back to the bay area. the national league championship series starts on sunday. >> looking forward to that. all right, it is 6:08. a lot of overcast skies but the

question is heading towards that weekend, are we getting a warmup on the way? >> oh, we are, which is really good news if the giants are playing at home on sunday. of course we will be one of the first to tell you as we are the proud broadcast home of the san francisco giants, bringing you all of that action right here on nbc bay area. 52 to start in santa rosa, 54, chilly in san jose. grab that coat in santa cruz where temperatures have dropped into the mid to low 50s. it's kind of cool out there this morning. as you can see, we've got showers on the radar that are coming in a little stronger than just a half hour ago from gil loi down to selenas. you'll find slick conditions. also getting some reports of light showers from morgan hill to san jose on 101 so travel cautiously this morning. as we head through the second half of the day, we'll get rid of a lot of that moisture and temperatures will start to get a little bit warmer. really intensifying by wednesday of next week. we're only forecasting 70 inland today.

67 bayside, 64 at the coast. we'll take a look at the pumpkin festival in hoof moon bay as well as oktoberfest in campbell. 6:10. let's check your drive. hi, mike. >> a lot is happening on your commute unfortunately. we're looking at oakland 880. look at these lights glowing because there's moisture in the air. christina is talking about impending rain. we're looking at 880 with all the slowing. look at all these lights southbound side. we still have a sig alert. it looks like they may have just started to move cars from lanes. that might be why we're seeing a little less of a backup. but from 980 down to 23rd, we have a big packup coming out of downtown. more problems getting other the bay bridge now that there's a stall on the san francisco side of the upper deck. it does look like things are starting to move past it as well. we don't have any severe backups at the toll plaza but the cash lanes are backing up. in the city at the squat and

gobble restaurant, the k and m lines are blocked by fire activity in the area. expect some delays because that does happen any time they have to change to a bus shuttle system. the l line has minimal delays through the area. that's better for those folks on that system. we'll look to the peninsula as well. 101 moves smoothly through palo alto. northbound with the headlights past university. no problems coming out of the south bay along the peninsula and we'll focus on the south bay for the next report. >> it's too bad about the squat and gobble. that's a good restaurant. 6:11. coming up, we have some wild weather to show you. a massive tree snaps in some soggy soil and just floods the streets of southern california out there. we'll show you the details coming up. and the president gets very busy on twitter. we'll take a look at what he's doing coming up in business. welcome back. it's 6:14. a tribute this morning for some of the country's oldest warriors. in a few hours, jerry osborn of astro valley and 32 other world war ii veterans will fly out of sfo to visit the world war ii memorial in washington, d.c. an all-expense paid trip put together by a nonprofit called honor flight nor cal. she served in the navy during the war running the ferry office at naval air station in san diego. >> once you're in the navy for three years, it never leaves you. i still salute the flag when i see it go by. it's just something that i'm very proud. i'm always amazed when people find out that i was in world war ii. they give you a hug and i say, wow, it was worth that.

>> she does not look it. miss osborn is 92 years old. she retired -- she is a retired first grade teacher who still volunteers in the e.r. at eden medical center. >> beautiful thing there. 6:15. if you're just waking up with us, crews working hard to put out a major fire at a major san francisco restaurant. >> this is right next to the muni station. right now lines k and m are not running but bus been set up. >> we will keep you updated on that. san jose police right now investigating the city's 37th homicide this morning. police say a man was shot on rogers avenue. that is near the 880/101 interchange outside of a bar. police still looking for the suspect. paul ryan and vice president joe biden squared off in their first and only debate last night. the debate covered foreign and domestic issues. initial responses seem to have been mix wed no clear winner for

this debate. here's something we've never said after a debate has happened. while biden and ryan were arguing, the president was retweeting. >> scott mcgrew, the president doesn't take a lot to retweet, does he? >> in case someone doesn't know retweet, it's the republishing of other people's comments on twitter and it's really the first time that has happened after a debate because twitter is not very old. let's take a look at what the president retweeted. he was talking about the debate itself and martha raddatz, she was the moderator. he retweets, wow, @martharad ddatz to @paul ryan vp, do you actually have the specifics or are you still working on it and that's why you won't tell voters? upworthy had the class not to spend the whole tight tweeting about the president retweeting them which i definitely would have been had hero tweeted me.

do watch the new york stock exchange as pleasanton-based work day starts trading shares. after pricing its shares at $28 last night. this will give the company $637 million in cold, hard cash. this is the biggest tech ipo, folks, since facebook. you know that myth busters exhibit opens this weekend at san jose's tech museum where you can test out myths yourself. carrie byron will be my guest sunday morning after "meet the press." we'll touch on the debate, the economy and crime, but we'll have fun with her. one quick story about her. you know sometimes they use a pig to demonstrate some sort of myth, like a dead pig. have you ever seen that? >> yeah. >> she's in charge of putting the pig in her car and taking it to the rendering plant. she actually is -- that's part of her job description. >> that is a nasty job. >> you think tv is glamorous? somebody has got to take the pig and get rid of it.

that's her job. >> scott, thanks a lot. we'll look forward to that one. 6:17. after a couple of smoking hot weeks, finally starting to feel like fall here in california. >> statewide the weather is pretty wild this week. in capistrano beach, a big tree toppled over right onto two parked cars after heavy rain soaked the soil. the good news, no one was hurt. east if l.a., some traffic trouble as heavy rain is causing serious flooding for three miles along the 60 miles. the rain causing all kinds of backup but so far no major accidents to report. check out this picture. snow is already falling on mammoth mountain. it's just a dusting, about 2 to 4 inches. not enough to open, but ski bunnies, get those skis ready. >> christina loren is here to tell us about precipitation, snow, a lot going on administrator and a heat wave all on the same seven-day forecast. how do you like that, bay area. good morning to you. friday, you made it. we've got a good-looking weekend

shaping up. we want to start with this live picture. we told you that the fog is settling in and that's the case over the embarcadero this morning. what you'll notice is even though we don't have radar showers coming, you'll find some drizzle, a steady mist along the coastline this morning, and temperatures, oh, they're cold out there. look at sonoma at 52 degrees. 54 in novato, san francisco 56 degrees there and we're at 54 right here in san jose. as we head throughout the day today, this is going to be the pattern for at least the first part of the day. right now the most action is between gilroy and hollister. san jose getting a little bit more moisture at this point as well. that's going to continue to be the case as we head throughout the morning hours. i'm going to take you to that futurecast in just a moment. i want to start with a wide view and show you our massive weather maker, this stubborn area of low pressure. cutoff low, up attached to the jetstream, finally takes a hike out of here the next 48 hours and the cold front comes through. this will reinforce the cold air that's already in place. but after this thing passes through, we're talking about a

big ridge of high pressure. stop the clock for you on your futurecast. it looks like by about 8:00 a.m. we'll have a lot of activity right in the heart of your morning commute. by 10:00 showers starting to deteriorate but not by much. then by noon finally getting some suspect. you'll see more sunshine today than yesterday. 71 in livermore and fairfield, 67 in gilroy and 69 in santa teresa. so the next three days work out like this. we'll jump to 79 degrees tomorrow. by sunday the 80s return and then look at how close we get to that 90-degree mark as we head into wednesday and thursday of next week. it's going to be warm so make sure you keep that summer wardrobe handy. you don't want to put away that tank top not yet, mike inouye. not just yet. this is southbound 280 looking toward us -- actually northbound 280. so there's the slowdown right now. let me show you on the map.

the center of your map looking at northbound 280 coming off the 680 interchange. i saw a lot of slowing. look at 101 as well approaching 880 at the top of your screen. that first burst extending north into santa clara. now, we do have some issues west 580 out of the altamont pass. we're seeing speeds start to dip into livermore. the mist and drizzle may affect your drive and we do see slowing coming through first street through livermore and that's the same area we see the change in the climate. looking at the dublin interchange with a little chae as well so plan to that out of the tri-valley. dramatically improving over the last few minutes south 880 approaching 23rd. the earlier sig alert has cleared out of lanes. of course the northbound build for the commute. look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we have the backup. the earlier stall sounds like it's moving off the roadway on the san francisco side but here's the backup and metering lights. we'll end with a look at the san mateo bridge, if you want to avoid the bay bridge, it is

trying to figure out the best way to knock that thing down. we will keep you updated. we'll have a live report and live updates as soon as we can get there. also new this morning, this is happening in san jose. two people are now in the hospital after an early morning house fire on carlton avenue. both people are expected to survive. the husband and a wife. firefighters say the fire is a challenge to fight because there is live ammunition in this home. bob redell is live at the scene. he will have a live report for us in about 20 minutes. an update to another developing story in san jose where police are searching for suspects after a deadly shooting on rogers avenue. a man was shot overnight outside of the alo bar and coffee shop. so far police have not identify the suspect. now to decision 2012. this morning all of the reviews are in after a vice presidential debate that really changed the tempo. these gentlemen stepped up and upped the ante in that race for the white house.

as jay gray reports, from the start, the fireworks were ready to roll in this debate. >> reporter: like most heavyweight bouts, it started with a firm handshake and then a flurry. republican paul ryan taking the initial swing after the debate's first question about the september attack in libya that killed four americans, including u.s. ambassador christopher stevens. >> what we are watching on our tv screens is the unraveling of the obama foreign policy, which is making the world more chaotic and us less safe. >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of mularkey. >> reporter: vice president joe biden accused of the republicans of politicizing the tragedy. looking to deliver what many say his running mate did not during the first presidential debate, biden was engaged, animated and always aggressive. referring more than once to an infamous secretly recorded speech by mitt romney. >> there are 47% who are with him who believe that they are victims. >> i've had it up to here with this notion that 47% -- it's about time they take some

responsibility here. >> reporter: the sparring continued for the full 90 minutes. >> we're heading in the wrong direction. >> reporter: each candidate throwing jabs. >> mr. vice president -- mr. vice president, i know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground. >> what would my friend do differently? if you notice, he never answers the question. >> reporter: and often interrupting each other. >> 22,000 people out for them to do it. >> reporter: though clearly, neither candidate is shying away from a political fight. jay gray, nbc news, washington. now that the debate is over, it's back to the campaign trail for vice president biden and paul ryan. the vice president will attend a grassroots event at the university of wisconsin. ryan will join mitt romney at a rally in lancaster, ohio. >> the debate maybe not a seismic shift in who's going to vote for who but it was entertaining and fun to watch. 6:33 right now. christina loren, what's going to be going on weatherwise? we've had so many things happening this week.

>> i know. finally i get a little something to do in the weather office. good morning to you. starting with this live picture over the embarcadero. what you cannot see from the dark is very overcast conditions. we also had some showers coming down on the radar so let's get right to that this morning after we show you san jose, completely overcast here as well. this is where the showers are currently coming down. so temperatures right now are pretty cool for a start. 53 degrees in sonoma, 55 degrees in napa. we don't have any 40s just yet but it is one of the coldest mornings that we've had of the week so far. san jose is at 54 degrees. santa cruz, down to 54 as well. chilly start to santa cruz. you'll be able to hit the beach by the end of my seven-day forecast so stay tuned for that. let's show you where the showers are coming down right now. you can see for the most part they're moving in from the east and pushing to the west and the south. you might get a little activity on 101 between gilroy and morgan hill, all the way up to san jose we have a steady drizzle reported. we'll get more active as we head throughout the morning hours. we top that clock for you at

8:00. look at this, more showers coming into the area. we'll continue that pattern until about noon. starting to get some breaks of sun. look at that, the clouds finally opening up to let that sunshine through. 70 degrees inland, 67 bayside and at the coast about 64 degrees. speaking of the coast, pumpkin festival this weekend at half moon bay. traffic will be rough but the weather should be nice. first let's check on your drive right now. >> you talk about busy, 92 as well so enjoy the weather while you're sitting there heading over the hill. this is a live look at san jose. all these headlights, let's show you what it is on the maps. we have the slowing, i show you the arrow north from 680 up to 880. that's the first burst that stuck around and now slowing at the bottom of your screen by capital expressway and also north 87 heading into downtown. even on a friday we're showing highway 87 show slowdowns at 6:30 in the morning. expect 85 to follow closely. we're also following more slowing south 880 coming out of hayward.

pillsbury toaster strudel. so delicious...so fun. happening now, the shuttle "endeavour" is being moved through city streets in los angeles on its way to retirement at the california science center. annette ariola is live in l.a. this morning for a look at the shuttle's 12-mile trek across town. good morning. >> reporter: hey there, good morning, guys. yeah, the shuttle is moving slowly, but it is moving, or at least it was. we want to go ahead and show you a live picture from down here in los angeles. we are being told that right now it is at a stand still. it was moving at about 2 miles an hour and at that rate it's expected to arrive at its location, the california science center, by saturday night. it rolled out of l.a.x. at 2:00 a.m. this morning and southland

residents were out there ready with their cameras on hand to capture this historic moment. airport officials told us they had to make certain adjustments to make sure that the roads around the airport would be able to support the weight of the shuttle along with the truck that is hauling it. the entire weight is about 300,000 pounds. that's the equivalent of a boeing 767. those roads were reinforced with metal sheets. going back to that live picture, we do want to let you know that well before today's event, the city of los angeles made numerous changes, taking down trees, making sure power lines wouldn't interfere with the shuttle, anything to make sure that this entire 13-mile trek went -- would go as smoothly as possible. i can tell you that being out there at 2:00 a.m. this morning, you almost forget you're a reporter and you whip out your camera and sell phone and start snapping away trying to capture this very important moment in

our nation's history. that's the very latest reporting from l.a.x., now back to you. >> thanks, annette. >> you see her wearing that warm, furry jacket. kind of chilly down there. we've got some cooler temperatures here as well. >> it's very representative of what we're experiencing right here in the bay area. wait until i show you the area of low pressure that's driving that cold weather because it's basically encompassing most of the state. 54 degrees to start you out in novato. grab your jacket in san jose. we're at 54 degrees. the same in santa cruz, which is what i think is most significant this morning. you can see showers are starting to get closer and closer to the bay area. the next couple hours we are expecting slick conditions for your morning commute. look at our weather maker, it extends all the way across the state of california and through the four corners region so there's a lot of activity happening out west. we do have some changes on the way. finally it's going to scoot to the east as an area of low pressure containing a cold front

moves through. this will help to dry us out. but after that system passes, we're going to get a big ridge of high pressure and a warmup. on the morning drive expect some showers to continue to slow you down. by noon we start to get a little better off. we see showers clearing the area and breaks of sunshine coming through so more sunshine on tap today than what we saw yesterday. it's going to be comfortable at the half moon bay pumpkin festival. 58 degrees at 10:00 a.m. at noon you'll be 61 degrees and 63 degrees at 4:00 p.m. there will be a little drizzle out there. you'll need your coat. probably a good idea to bring a hoodie if you're headed out there. temperatures today, hoodie weather. temperatures in the 70s and the 60s all across the bay area. we've got warmer weather just around the corner. look at your seven-day forecast. up to 82 degrees by sunday, 80 degrees on monday and then as we head through the mid-section of next week, the upper 80s, so a little something for everybody. let's check on your drive, good

morning, mike. >> good morning. we have something a little better for most folks and not so nice for some. look at the slowing from capital all the way past the airport and getting into sunnyvale and mountain view. we have the build there and also for 87 as you're coming up into downtown between capital expressway and downtown. that's starting to build. the boom for 85 now really showing slowing from 87 all the way towards saratoga. also on my maps, i copied this off of christinas, we're looking at the contour data. so wet roads like she's talking about might affect your drive coming through the hills just east of san jose. keep that in mind for the entire south bay and also 880 south of 92 we're looking at. looking at 580 as well for wet pavement through livermore and maybe highway 84. keep that in mind. a smoother drives as far as incidents go heading into sunol. we also have a nice flow but slower traffic for 580 and the

castro valley y. south 880, typical pattern here. let's catch up with the san mateo bridge. coming over toward 101, a good number of cars coming off of the high rise but here's the key. we can see some glow to the lights but also still see those cars along the flat section coming over from hayward so the visibility still okay even from the peninsula side. another look, we'll end with this live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. look at that, we still have movement in the fastrak lanes, which is good. this backup does go all the way past grand avenue. as we look off into the disappearance, you can see the headlights on the east shore freeway. but low clouds does mean moisture in the air. visibility on the bridge is okay. back to you. 6:49. now an update on that breaking news that we are following in san francisco where a fire at a restaurant is disrupting muni service. it's happening at the squat & gobble cafe. this is just across the street from the west portal muni station. christie smith is live at the

scene with an update. a very active scene out there, christie. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. we just got here about ten minutes ago and this is having a major impact on the neighborhood. i want to step aside so you can see all that's going on here. we're by the west portal tunnel. firefighters still spraying water on what is now a four-alarm fire. you can see them spraying water an there is a big cloud of smoke. now, within the last 15 minutes, what the fire chief told me is that they upgraded this to a four alarm to a three alarm. it's at the squat & gobble restaurant. what the fire chief told me is that this is a deep seated fire and it looks like it may have started somewhere in the rear near the kitchen area and it spread to an adjacent wine bar, the next building over. she said that it has significant damage, both of them. now, firefighters backed out because they say it got so dangerous that the squat &

gobble has actually partially collapsed. here's what the fire chief saw when she got here. >> when i first got on scene there was heavy flames blowing through the roof of the squat & gobble. so what we're doing is obviously working and we have our arson team on scene. they're standing by waiting to get the green light to go in an determine cause and origin. >> reporter: now, the muni lines l, m and k are affected. those light rail lines, because the tunnel is here and they basically can't get through, there is so much heavy equipment parked here on the street. i did speak briefly with the muni spokesperson. he told me that he heard that power may be cut to the tunnel as well, so that could be having an impact too. i can tell you that they have bus bridges set up, but still there's a little bit of confusion. people walking around, trying to figure out how to get where they're going, but i'm told that st. francis circle is the place to go if you want to pick up one of those bus bridges. again, muni has people out here directing people where to go,

which way to go, but people trying to figure it out. i can tell you that we have seen absolutely no light rail lines run down this street at all and firefighters tell us they will be here quite some time trying to nail down a cause. but again this is one of the areas you want to avoid because there is so much heavy equipment and so much activity from here. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> you can definitely tell they're trying to organize things, a little confusing out there. thank you very much. the ex-marine accused of killing his two neighbors during an argument in vallejo last week is expected today in court. 65-year-old martin hoeniger is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon. police believe he shot and killed two neighbors during a political argument after the presidential debate last week. he hid in his home about an hour before police were finally able to get to him and arrest him. the couple found driving the car of a woman murdered in hercules will be in court today. darnell and tania washington are

being held in washington state where they were arrested earlier this week. investigators say darnell recently escaped from a southern catch prison. the couple was driving a car that belonged to susie ko, the hercules woman who was found dead inside her home. investigators are trying to figure out how the couple got the car. it's not clear whether the washingtons will be charged with ko's murder. the parents of a young hayward girl that disappeared 24 years ago will now have to wait at least a few more weeks to see if their daughter, her remains have finally been found. investigators say dna testing on a bone fragment pulled from a well in february will take a while to complete. they are testing it to see if in fact it belongs to 9-year-old michaela garecht. investigators initially thought it belonged to a 16-year-old by the name of joanne hobson. when hobson's mother decided to have it retested, scientists determined it belonged to a person younger than her daughter. that well was in lindon. it was a dumping ground for the

so-called speed freak killers. earlier this year, one of them told investigators where to find the bodies of some of their victims. 6:54. the teen accused of stealing a celebrity chef's lamborghini an then trying to kill a mills valley couple could face more charges. 18-year-old max wade is already charged with attempted murder, vehicle theft and burglary. during a preliminary hearing this week prosecutors said he should also face charges for trying to pull a loaded gun on the officers who game to arrest him. prosecutors say wade stole a lamborghini belonging to television chef guy fiari in march. the next month he allegedly fired a handgun at a teenage couple inside a pickup truck. wade's preliminary hearing continues today. and new this morning, two people right now hospitalized in the south bay after a fire burned down their home in san jose. this fire broke out at a house

at carlton avenue just before 4:00 this morning. for a reference, that is near union avenue and close to los gatos memorial park. bob redell is live at the scene and is here to update us with the latest. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. gut wrenching is how one man described seeing his brother-in-law's home destroyed here on carlton avenue. the brother-in-law and his wife who lived here were able to escape on their own but were burned on the way out. the man had burns to his head. both were walking and talking before going to the hospital. according to the fire department, they are expected to survive. >> just got a call around 4:00 this morning, brother-in-law was pretty freaked out. he said his house was on fire and that he had been burned. and obviously sounded pretty freaked out. at that point it was just a matter of getting over here and seeing if we could help out. >> reporter: it was the smoke that awoke this married couple

before their house actually went completely up, became completely engulfed. as you can see in these photos we're showing you. it appears to have started in the kitchen as far as the cause. what started the fire in the kitchen, the fire department is not sure, that's still under investigation. a neighbor tried to put out this fire with their garden hose until the fire department arrived but no such luck. the fire was challenging because power lines prevented the aerial hose from getting a good angle on the fire. and the homeowner notified them they had live ammo inside so firefighters had to keep their disappearance and make sure they had eye protection, basically forcing them into a defensive position. in spite of their efforts, the home was destroyed but they were able to keep it from spreading to other homes nearby. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you very much. now a monumental money deal, the biggest tech ipo since facebook. >> workday opened the markets at the new york stock exchange. scott mcgrew, $160 billion in the company stock is not bad.
