it is san francisco that's likely to win big. bob redell is live in santa clara this morning with more on what a super bowl bid means for the entire bay area. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marla. later today the 49ers will learn if their new $1.2 billion stadium going up right behind me here in santa clara will be in the running to host super bowl mmxvi or 2017. even though the game would be held down here a lot of the partying would take place 30 miles north in san francisco where the team has been playing all this time. that means sf could take away some of the financial benefit. part of the driving force behind this, mayor ed lee of san francisco who has been working with the 49ers for putting together a bid for bringing the super bowl back to the bay area. santa clara's mayor is appreciative with ed lee taking the lead in this process.

in his eyes what's good for sf is good for the region. >> great weather, great people, great food, lots of entertainment. this is going to be an amazing place around super bowl. we're going to have parties all the way from san francisco down to san jose and santa clara as well. it's going to be an exciting place to be for everyone. >> reporter: it's been a while since the bay area hosted a super bowl. it was actually back in 1985. that super bowl taking place at stanford stadium. to give you a sense of the connection the 49ers still feel to sf even though they're moving to santa clara, the team owner has told the chronicle that if the 49ers win another super bowl while playing out of the south bay, the victory parade would be in san francisco. the 49ers are expected to make the short list as being hosts for 2016 or 2017. why not 2014 when the new stadium is scheduled to open? the nfl has rules that you must play two full seasons in your stadium before being qualified

to host a super bowl in that said stadium. so if they get the short list, make the short list, what they must do is submit a plan and do a live presentation to all 32 nfl owners in may. bob redell, "today in the bay." thanks. 5:03. a preliminary hearing begins today in a murder case that's gone unsolved for 30 years. steven carlson is accused of killing 14-year-old tina fales. carlson was 16 at the time of the killing, but investigators did not link him to the case until last year. carlson has pleaded not guilty to the charge. the now 44-year-old is expected in court in oakland today for a preliminary hearing. a ruling is expected today on whether the teen accused of stealing a celebrity chef's lamborghini can stand trial. max wade's preliminary hearing is expected to wrap up with closing arguments this morning. wade is accused of stealing chef

guy fieri's lamborghini in may of last year. he drove the car around almost a year before police were able to track him down. wade is also facing attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting at a marin county couple in april. san jose police say they have caught a woman responsible for almost a can dozen trash bin fires in the city. fire investigators say they saw 56-year-old glynnis trying to set a fire saturday night. they think she's responsible for a string of fires and garbage cans and bushes in west san jose. all of the fires were set behind homes and did not do major damage. well, tickets are still available to tonight's giants game, but you're going to have to pay through the nose to get them. that's a lot. >> christie smith is live in san francisco with details on that. plus some things everyone is

going to do tonight, something that people need to know, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. oh, did you see it? torture started right off the bat with the giants dropping game one of the national league championship. certainly disappointing for fans who filled the stadium. but maybe only briefly, because tickets still available for tonight's game at at&t park. not only do fans think the giants will come back to defeat the st. louis cardinals, but fans are feeling the giants will go all the way. the giants have played six games in the postseason and they have got to turn this around. this evening expect gridlock on the trains and in the streets. wear your comfortable shoes if you grab one of those last-minute tickets. . them standing room only. fans say they are ready to watch the team battle right back. >> i think we're going to be fine. we're going to come back like we did last series and show everybody exactly what the giants are about. >> it just feels very, very

this is san jose but we have just about as much fog in every city. livermore in the extreme east bay has not quite yet drifted your way but we are counting on that. gilroy is down a quarter of a mile. you have half a mile visibility from santa rosa to san francisco. even in napa, a quarter of a mile. in some spots you only have several hundred feet. 57 degrees in napa, 56 in san francisco. take you into the south bay where temperatures are just about as chilly. we're at 54 degrees to start you out in gilroy. grab your coat, leave your umbrella at home all week. in fact the opposite of last week with temperatures dropping off. we're talking about a substantial warmup that's going to bring your temperatures into the mid-90s by thursday. today we're talking mid-80 in the warmest cities across the bay and that's because fog is going to move quickly. that's why you get the fog, the reduced visibility right at the ground level so today's highs

will work out like this. 85 in livermore, 84 in fwgilroy and 77 in oakland. that warmup really moves in as we head through tomorrow. take you through that forecast first. let's check on that all-important drive. good morning, mike. >> not a great morning as far as visibility goes. christina shows you around the bay. this is 880 through fremont. you can tell because all the way on the left is that new auto mall sign so we can see that but not much beyond there. drivers, you're okay. taking another live look across the bay through palo alto. you can see just about a half mile through the areas but just seeing off the freeway, which you don't need to drive there anyway. some glowing lights along the peninsula. a little dip to the speeds means you're right around 60 and that's probably advisable through some of the areas with lower clouds and thicker fog. we're talking about the approach to at&t park this evening because with that second game in the series so there will be a lot of congestion into and out

of the city. we'll look farther north for the 101 southbound commute that curves at tara lyerra linda. very thick fog reported as well. back to you. 5:09. the people in san jose gathered this weekend to raise awareness for food allergies with a 5k run and walk. the memorial walk took place at lake cunningham saturday morning. our own laura garcia-cannon emceed the event. it was organized in honor of a teenager who died from an allergic reaction while vacationing in mexico with his family in 2008. you were saying what a great turnout you had there. >> oh, it was an amazing turnout. the second time they have had this event so it's really, really nice the family does that. a new refund in a live

alcoa cut its global demand. chevron warned it could report much worse results and amd slashed its sales targets. citigroup reports this morning and we'll hear from ge, microsoft and intel later this week. today we'll get data on retail sales and business inventories. the dow edged up 2 friday to 13,328. the nasdaq slipped 5 to 3044. amazon says some customers will be available for a refund. the credits will range from 30 cents to $1.32 per ebook depending on whether or not they were best-selling titles or not. however, the refunds won't be available until the court signs off on the settlement in february so don't hold your breath for that 30 cents. back to you. >> thank you much. ladies, i know you'll look at the vice presidential debates on "saturday night live" coming up in just a bit. we also saw the iphone 5 made

less than a quarter of a mile visibility in parts of the bay area. it's chilly out there to start. good morning, novato, 52 degrees there, 54 in santa cruise. so high pressure is moving in today. a week disturbance is coming in right now. after it heads out of here high pressure heads in quickly. dense fog will be a factor but we'll see skies clear by 10:00 a.m. highs will be comfortable in the mid-80s. 85 in livermore today, 74 in san francisco. look, you can hit the beach in santa cruz at 80 degrees. as we head throughout tomorrow a touch warmer. we hit the 90s by wednesday and peak on thursday. 94 inland, 85 bayside and 81 at the coast. we'll see how that fog is impacting your drive. good morning, mike. >> you should consider it an impact so lower the speeds and get out of the house a little earlier. chp gives an advisory right here for the bay bridge coming across the span. we're already starting to see a

little slowing as you're coming up the inkline and that might be affected by your visibility. we'll take you farther out because oakland, your visibility is okay. actually even out of the altamont pass which is a rare treat but the fog is creeping over 580 as well. right now we just have the commute that's starting to build. construction eastbound pretty typical, a little slowing through the zone but no big deals here. the san mateo bridge here over on the eastern side, here's westbound your commute. crystal clear view, right? look at the peninsula side from foster side and san mateo and it's tough to make out those folks getting off that same span. so here's where the low clouds and fog are affecting your visibility and drive. in the south bay we've got some pockets. this is northbound 101 at 680. you can't even see the southbound side. very little traffic but we'll send it over to you guys with just that note. 5:17. they were outlawed in 2009 but telemarketing robo calls are spurring more complaints than ever.

most of them are scams, according to the ftc. investigative reporter vicky nguyen has a look at which companies are getting the most complaints. >> reporter: we looked at a list of the top violators over the past year and found that companies claiming to be some type of credit card service are number one on the consumer gripe list. and even if you are on that do-not-call list, it may not be enough to stop the robo calls. nearly every day -- >> i'm calling to see if you need your carpet professionally steam cleaned. >> reporter: the phone rings. >> hello? >> reporter: with a robo call in michael rosenthal's home. >> this is a very important phone call for the diabetic home. >> reporter: he says he's been on the do-not-call list since it was created. >> that's what pisses me off. >> reporter: he tried to turnpike the tables on the telemarketers, recording their recorded messages and confronting them. >> how did you get my number?

hello? usually what would happen is click, they would hang up. >> reporter: but engaging the robo callers is a mistake. it can even trigger more calls, because it tells the company there's a human on the other end of the line. >> hang up. don't push one. don't call a number they give you because that will just connect you to a scam artist. >> reporter: reputable companies know robo calls are illegal, unless you've given the company permission in writing to call you. >> which no one ever does. >> reporter: so if you do get one, odds are it's coming from a company that's looking to steal your money. the most common offers are bogus services that require a monthly payment. >> credit card services, debt negotiation services, auto warranties, medical insurance, things like that where you're expecting to pay over time, they're hoping to get you in that way. >> reporter: the ftc says take simple steps to stop the calls. don't rns a, don't push any

christina. 5:22. mountain view police are cracking down on drivers who are speeding along a dangerous road. the move is in response to a crash in june that killed a man at a bus stop near castro elementary school. the driver was speeding when you lost control and jumped the curb. mountain view police put out a warning on facebook last week reminding drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians and bikes in crosswalks and on sidewalks. a community meeting will be held tonight so residents can talk about their concerns. a new report out this morning looks at the best cities to trick-or-treat in. a couple of bay area ones made the list. san francisco is tops, according to the real estate website zillo. look at the crowd. second year in a row sf has come in at number one. meanwhile, san jose has moved up the slot to number five. they also looked at the top five neighborhoods. in san francisco, presidio

budgets. again, that game time just after 5:00 tonight. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:34. happening now, antioch police are looking for suspects in a double homicide this morning. police say someone shot a man and a woman to death near the pittsburg/antioch border. it happened just off highway 4 around 5:30 yesterday evening. the man died at the scene. the woman died later at the hospital. police have no motive or suspects at this time. this morning family members of those who died in the september 11th attacks will come face to face with some of the 19 planned the attacks. they're being allowed to watch a closed circuit broadcast. the rest of the public will not have access to the video feed. the court session is being held at guantanamo bay in cuba. five suspects, including the alleged mastermind, have been charged in those terrorist attacks. back here in the bay area, san francisco police are trying

to figure out what caused a football fan to stab another fan. it happened near harney way and jamestown avenue just as yesterday's game was getting under way. police say a 27-year-old man from elk grove was with a group of friends when two men approached them. an argument started and someone stabbed the 27-year-old. he was seriously hurt but is expected to survive. police arrested a 22-year-old man from daly city and a 30-year-old man from san francisco. 5:35. new this morning, could the super bowl be coming back to the bay area? we'll find out today if san francisco is in the running to host football's biggest game in 2016 or 2017. bob redell is live at the new 49er stadium in santa clara, which would be the site of the game. but there's something unusual about the way a bay area super bowl would actually be hosted. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. yes, we should learn later this morning the 49ers, that is,

the space shuttle "endeavour" finally home this morning. thousands of people greeted the orbiter yesterday as it arrived at a california science center in los angeles. it was supposed to have made it back on saturday, but the hauler carrying the spacecraft sprang a hydraulic leak. tree trimmers also had to be called in to make way for its 78-food wing span. it caused a 17-hour delay, but people living in the area didn't seem to mind. they were just very happy to see a part of history. >> it's just a happiness, a joy that it's brought. oh, lovely, wonderful, awesome, all the adjectives you can think of. all of them. >> no doubt pretty amazing seeing that coming down the street. space shuttle "endeavour" will be on public display later this month. plans are under way to construct a new building for that orbiter. we were talking earlier about "saturday night live" and the vice presidential debate. scott, they hit the iphone 5 pretty hard as well. >> snl is kind of relevant
