it is docked in san francisco this morning. unfortunately, it's in pieces. the team is out practicing in the bay yesterday when the 72-foot boat capsized. some pretty amazing video here. some 14 crew members were on the catamaran when it pitched forward and crashed. this is after hitting a huge wave. crew members say this is the very first time they've capsized on a boat that large. >> we weren't sure if the wing would snap. it's never happened before. we didn't know if that boat would come crashing down. a few nervous moments for sure. >> the price tag on the ac-72s, between $8 million and $10 million apiece. no word yet on how long it's going to take to fix all the damage. the skipper telling us there's no doubt the crash will be a setback but he is convinced with a lot hard work the team can win

the america's cup. the san francisco giants are on the road today playing st. louis in game three of the national league championship series. second baseman says he's likely to play today. it was a rough one to watch. we'll talk about the controversial play yesterday with a smile. >> what hurts the most? >> probably running. probably more when i move side to side like playing defense or when i run the bases, stuff like that. >> [ bleep ]. >> he also said matt holliday called the clubhouse and apologized for the collision. today's game starts at 1:00 p.m. coming up at 5:00 this moring, we're going to take you live for live coverage of game

three in the nlcs. a thief who allegedly broke into a silicon valley's home will appear in court today. prosecutors say it was steve jobs' home, back in july. he allegedly ripped off iphones and other valuables. the man is expected to enter a plea during today's hearing. we'll find out if this 11-year-old has to transfer to another school because officials say he is a health risk. he was born with genetic markers that could lead to cystic fibrosis. though he does not actually have cystic fibrosis, his school says he is a health risk to other students and must transfer to another school. >> gave my teacher a big hug and i said good-bye to one of my friends. >> to move him across town and

>> john sets the bar. we're looking over here. checking the bay bridge. still clear. you know, that's the case before 4:40 at the bridge. there's just something that was reported. clearing from the bridge itself. on the span on the upper deck getting into san francisco, a disabled vehicle. now being pushed off the treasure island off ramp there so we'll watch for a little bit of slowing for the next few minutes but it sounds like the bridge crew has that well in hand. the road crews have the construction well in hand. at the bottom of your screen, that megaphone marking the coliseum. disney on ice starting tonight. shouldn't be a major traffic concern. my daughter's concerned about it. there at the coliseum, very light flow of traffic, both directions. no problems for the minute. the fate of the historic radar tower south of san jose.

the government agency will weigh two options. while money can be raised to try to save it from demolition. the director said at one point he thought the tower had to go but now because of public input he will hold off on the decision. tonight's public hearing is 7:00 at the historic dell monte building in sunnyvale. how much this blaze could cost businesses to rebuild. also, bracing for the big one. how experts are teaching people how to be ready for another disaster. the 49ers get the green light to move forward with their pitch to host football's biggest game. have you heard of the new dialing procedure

new this morning, a car jacking led to a police chase and an arrest late last night. police say two people were car jacked while walking back to their car after dinner. an hour later, officers say that stolen car was involved in a crash. suspects seen getting into another vehicle, then driving off. police eventually caught up with

him in neighboring pittsburgh. they say the car crashed into a sign outside an ihop. officers arrested one man. he was booked into a detention facility on charges of possession of stolen property. we'll have more in this story in about 15 minutes at 5:00 a.m. damage estimates from a massive fire in san francisco last week are creeping close to $7 million. san francisco firefighters say the fire at the squat and gobble also damaged a nearby wine shop and dentist office. they have not determined an exact cause. today marks 23 years since the earthquake magnitude 6.9. the epicenter was the santa cruz mountains. this one often nicknamed the world series quake because the initial jolt was caught on live

tv. this week, california's holding a statewide great shake-out drill. coming up at 5:00, we'll have a live report and take you live to the california academy of science which is commemorating the date in a unique way. disappointing news. sent stocks sliding. for more, we turn to jackie deangela. she's live at cnbc world headquarters. >> the futures are lower this morning most likely, as you said, due to disappointing earnings last night from intel and ibm. also, businesses cutting back on their tech spending. stocks rallying obtuse with the dow posting its biggest game in a month thanks to solid earnings from j & j, united health and coca-cola. markets went up despite the

surprise resignation from the citigroup ceo. earnings out this morning from bank of america and pepsico. the dow yesterday closed at 13551. the nasdaq got nearly 37 to 3101. americans may be ready to shop this holiday season but maybe not quite till they drop. the national retail federation saying consumers spend an average of $749, up a little more than 1% from last year. but it will be the smallest increase we've seen since 2008 to 2009 following the financial crisis. about 22% of shoppers say they plan to get an early start on things. they're going to go out in search of the holiday bargains this month. that is quite early. as for me, i always leave it to the last minute. >> just get us your list. we'll start early this year. 4:47. christina is here to tell us about our wednesday forecast. >> we're looking at hot stuff.

for mid-october. temperatures in the 90s. never usually a welcome experience. today, and tomorrow, are going to be hot. sonoma is at 67 degrees. we're at 64 right on the beach. this morning is mild. temperatures, because of this warm start, high pressure building in, warm downsloping winds throughout the day today. in fact, forecasting a couple new records up in the north bay. 52 degrees in san jose to start with. it's comfortable out there now. not expecting, really, any low cloud cover. as we head throughout the morning, we're going to get a fabulous sunrise. that usually occurs around 6:45 as the sun doesn't even come up officially till 7:51.

that will beat the old record of 90. beating an old record of 90, set back in 2008. 91 for livermore. 86 degrees today in san jose. warm for one more day and then temperatures just tumble. look at where we're headed, for the low 70s. monday into tuesday. we've got showers on the way. so you can pull out that muscle shirt, tank top, just for a couple days. and then you'll want that winter coat. jon knows which way the beach is. >> oh, the things he shows us. 4:49. the super bowl could be returning to the bay area in time for major anniversary. nfl announced 49ers are a finalist to host the super bowl 50 in 2016. that means the game will be played at that new santa clara stadium they're building. most of the festivities will likely be held in san francisco. south florida is the other

finalist for super bowl l. the last one, the 49ers beat the dolphins at stanford stadium. speaking of the super bowl, beyonce will be performing at the halftime show during the nfl's big game. she made the announcement yesterday on her website. she sang the national anthem before the game back in 2004. this season's game is set for february 3rd in new orleans. kind of cool on her website, she had the icon on there. looking like she was ready to play some ball. >> the prettiest player out there, if she was. still ahead, losing weight by getting more sleep. how about that? why a new study have scientists saying this one could be possible. >> i got to go to bed. >> sleep just sounds good no matter what the reason. we'll keep an eye out because yesterday was tough. this morning, i'll let you know how you're shaping up.

burning body fat. look at her right there getting in shape. researchers discovered people just got 4 1/2 hours of sleep for several nights were more likely to have a slower metabolism and ultimately gain weight. >> totally me. >> is the lack of sleep also takes its toll on your organs which makes your organs less effective. >> so it can affect your vision. it can affect your kidney function. it can affect your liver function. over time, it is the secondary complications that can lead to amputations, can lead to blindness and a whole host of problems. >> this is all great news for people like us who work this shift. the study shows no damage with eight hours per might. more research is needed to discover exactly how much sleep is needed and if long-term damage can be reversed with more sleep. i just want to get one of those caps she's wearing. >> a lot of people starting their day waking up. chiefs are happy no doubt. >> rub those eyes.

check this out. highway 101 is moving very slowly and very typical. pre 5:00 drive right now. the green on the map shows you speeds at the limit. south bay great. we'll take you to the dri valley. coming out of the pass, still at the limit as well. pretty typical, a little slowing through the cone zone. north vasco road, reports of a disabled vehicle blocking one lane. use caution because it is darker and chp doing some activity. another look towards fruitvale. there's a tire in the lane, chp will move that to the shoulder, so just be careful. back to you. >> meat and potatoes guy?

>> i like good steak. >> idaho send one of its most famous products on a cross country road trip. >> what better way to celebrate than a big fat idaho potato? the commission celebrating by sending that giant potato sculpture across 36 states. the spud stops here in southern california. you can see an 18-foot tall fork that splits the two roads. the commission donated $100,000 to meals on wheels. that's very nice. collecting money for the charitable food service along the way. >> pretty cool. >> that's a lot of carbs. still ahead, a night out to dinner turns violent for two people in the east bay. how their car ended up stolen and later wrecked. also, the giants getting their game faces on for game three today. we are live in st. louis with a check on the team's final preps.
