us. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. just into our newsroom, cyclist lance armstrong says he's stepping down. and nike now breaking off all ties with the cyclist as well. a week after the u.s. anti-doping agenc released a report detailing allegations against the seven-time tour de france winner. armstrong himself is a survivor of testicular cancer. crisis manage her experts likely say he stepped down to keep his charity's name from being dragged into the doping debate. a catamaran wipes out on the bay. that was a wild one. this morning, team oracle is hauling back what's lefrt of that boat after a nasty spill. accident. >> reporter: an oracle team 17 is now back here at pier 80. it was towed in and arrived here early this morning. the boat capsized yesterday afternoon near the golden gate bridge. the wind had been blowing at around 25 knots. the catamaran was making a big turn and it took a nose-dive into the water. 14 crew members were on board at the time. the boat skipper says he'd been in a similar situation before but just never on a boat this size. as for what this does to their chances to defend the america's cup, the team will have to find a way to cope. >> obviously, we've got a lot of work. we'll come up with a new plan and strategy.

restaurant that was open at the time. police still looking for another this morn. an suv and a tree. this started last night when police got a report that two people were leaving a restaurant. they were assaulted and car jacked. the suspect in that, a man and a woman. about an hour later, police say that honda was involved in a crash over on contra loma and the driver was seen jumping into another car and leaving the scene. then pittsburgh police see that second car. there's a chase through the street ending in that crash here at east leeland and lovage right at the ihop. the driver was arrested. police say he's got quite a record, convictions for car thef theft, burglary. he's charged with possession of stolen property. police still looking for that woman who was involved in the

microsoft jumping on the tablet craze with its surface tablet. microsoft says the tablets will go on sale a week from friday. apple will most likely announce a smaller ipod at an event set for next week as well. another developing built of news. i think you'll hear a lot about this. it's what big companies are doing with your personal information. there have been growing concern over news coming out of verizon and master card in which both companies have said in public they're keeping track of what you do either online or what you buy with your card, to develop a very personal picture of who you are as a consumer. it's not a new issue but consumers are starting to catch on. i spoke the other day to the ceo of a data analysis firm who said telecon companies who bundle telephone and cable together are able to predict which customers are going to turn based on their

eastbound looks okay, the volume, but along that flat section just before you get to the high-rise there's an accident there. we have a camera over there as well. these folk, the headlights are going westbound. eastbound coming off the peninsula. off of the high rise behind me, it's slow approaching the scene of what apparently the accident right there just as you are approaching the hayward side. so about halfway across that flat section is where the accident is. the maps will show you the effect on the speed sensors. jamming up as you get closer to the hayward side. we'll track that and the dunn barton bridge to the south is just fine, highway 84. chp has issued an official alert. consider the bridge as your

not allow a chick-fil-a to open on el camino real. last night, the city council voting down a proposal to build an over 4400 square foot drive-through restaurant that would have been located at the intersection. council members were concerned with the high vol um 50 ume of it would likely create. the company could resubmit plans for restaurant that doesn't include a drive-through. the super bowl could be returning in time for a major anniversary. >> nfl says the 49ers are among the finalists to host super bowl l that would take place in 2015. most of the festivities would actually take place in san francisco. south florida, the other finalists for super bowl l. the last bay area super bowl was 1985 when the 49ers beat the

now, president obama in iowa and ohio, governor romney with two stops in virginia. from washington, i'm tracie potts for "today in the bay." we're joined by political science professor jim cotrell. this time, president obama certainly came out swinging. do you think his performance will give him that edge? >> obviously, i think they will interpret that one way. but democrats were certainly energized by that performance. they wanted to see somebody who will defend himself against some of the charges that romney was making. he probably energized his base. and helped alleviate some of the

damage. >> and the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. taking responsibility. the president, though, struck back. how accurate do you think their arguments were? how strong did that come across? >> well, i think the president stuck up for himself. candy crowley even said he did call it the terrorist attack the next day. the president said, could you say that again, candy? so i think he was very satisfied probably with his performance in that regard. i think anytime mitt romney brings up the foreign policy angle, it will help the president because he can remind voters not only am i responsible for this situation but also attacking al qaeda. some of this video is new to me for the first time because i listened to it on the radio. it really shows the difference of visually when you see something and that influence and

hearing something as well. bottom line, who do you think came out on top for this one? >> i think obama's a little more satisfied. it helped him quite a bit. listening to him on the radio is different than watching him on tv. the personality sometimes more than the facts. sometimes it's very helpful to look at the transcript or listen to it on the radio rather than simply watching the debate. >> even today, just seeing them so up close and personal. i pictured them at podiums, you know, arguing with each other. so it is, it really changes your perspective. thank you. 6:34. let's get a perspective on the weather outside. feels like it's kind of summertime. >> no debate about it. good morning. no debate. a beautiful start over the bay bridge this morning. beautiful sunrise shaping up as we head throughout the next

we have this live look at an overturned car. eastbound 92. see the car center screen here. it's on its roof. i don't have any details about injuries. whatever ambulance may have been there has well cleared. it's not just your middle lane. it's your two left lanes. only one lane gets by eastbound. you see the lights glistening off the water. the backup all the way off that high rise. chopper will continue to show. this is the jam from the peninsula side. as you get off that high rise, things will really slam down. you want to consider the alternate route. i do have our palo alto camera turned towards that. clear flow of traffic here. eastbound, those tail lights, those few tail lights, that is your alternate to the south to get around the bridge it we'll show you on the maps. the big backup over to i-80.

the san francisco bay, really illustrates the reason for the warm-up. the sun will be out in full force right off the bat. want to show you another perspective now. the bay bridge completely clear conditions. as that sun makes its way over the horizon, as we head throughout the next 20, 30 minutes, we'll show you a phenomenal sunrise. 54 degrees in concord. so, here it is. we got a dry pattern sitting up. winds off shore today. we're not even going to see that marine layer return. we wake up tomorrow morn, another fog free start. that means 80s for us. bone dry in our neck of the woods. not the case when it comes to st. louis. we have some problems heading towards where our giants will take the field later today. local time, the warmest point of the day is right on time with that system of low pressure. we've got an area of low pressure. it's going to be warm out there. stormy conditions. i'm not just talking about some

accident. the west side, the commute direction, that is also slowed by all the distraction. let's take you right out there. there have been some changes. this tow truck has backed up. here's the car we saw on its roof. it looks like some oil or some fuel there. they're now preparing to tow that from the area. it does look like once they get that towed, chp will get that clear. meanwhile, back at the map, we'll show you that does have a slowdown. some suggesting the dunn barton bridge is your alternate. you already see some folks slowing. now as folks decide to change direction, they may have made some sudden lane changes that might be contributing to what caused these two accidents just south of the bridge. remember, though, it is causing a slowdown for both directions. in the south bay, your commute directions are also showing some slowdowns. north 85, north 280, north 101. we have the accident west 237. also, your direction through

north 85 as you're coming up through san jose. another tough one developing for the south bay. there's the backup for you coming off the oakland side. back to you. >> there's also a setback this morning for team oracle as it prepared to defend its america's chaum paneship. this morning, its hauling back wreckage from one of its boats after it capsized on the bay. >> reporter: the boat skipper says this is definitely a setback for oracle team usa. the team now is going to have to come up with a new plan and a new strategy to defend its america's cup title. the team in the boat were training yesterday on the san francisco bay and around 3:00 in the afternoon, the winds were blowing at around 20 to 25 knots and the crew was in the middle making a big turn when all of a sudden the boat lurched

forward and took a nose-dive into the water and a few of the crew members went into the bay. the wing of the boat hit the water and was badly damaged. now, technician is one of the crew members on the boat. he said they'd been pushing the body a little bit more each day and definitely found their limit yesterday. >> i was second from the back which meant i was pretty much as high as anyone. so for me i was lucky i was able to hold on. and was just behind jimmy and were able to jump down low. so we didn't land on anything. >> reporter: he was talking about the skipper who said they were very lucky no one was hurt when the boat cab sized. they were able to tow the yacht back to the headquarters where the team will begin a detailed

again. google's ceo larry page is off the dl list this morning. >> may be his first public appearance since becoming ill months ago. scott mcgrew, he looked well. >> he looked well. he didn't sound well. page has been missing from press conferences and earnings announcements. all we know is he had lost his voice. when he showed up tuesday at google's yearly conference and actually spoke, that was worth noting. >> we really want you to have a great experience and we want to be able to innovate both on hardware and software. >> you can hear him being very cautious with his voice. on a human level, it's nice to see that page is getting better. on a business level, many members of the press and analyst community would like more information about exactly what is wrong so we can have a better understanding on the leadership of google. but nice to see him back. >> yes, very much so. thank you. we wish him well. it's 6:55. you may recall 23 years ago

today the 6.9 earthquake that shook the bay area. 63 died. thousands were hurt. now, live in san francisco where the city is turning the anniversary of the earthquake into a teaching opportunity. good lesson for all of us. good morning. >> good morning. we're here at the california academy of sciences. something i learned, a quick source of the water in case of emergency, your water heater. and in a very big emergency, even the tank of your toilet contains water that is drinkable in case of that emergency. the shake house here is not working today but there are other tools that the academy will use to teach kids and their parents about earthquakes. unless you were around 23 years ago to feel that quake, there are a lot of lessons to be

learned here. the tremor measured 6.9. it wasn't even centered here in san francisco, it was centered in the santa cruz mountains. because the actual tremor was 11 miles underground, san francisco got a good lick. the average depth of earthquakes is about 4 to 6 miles. we all remember the span of the bridge came crashing down. damage was estimated at about $6 billion to $8 billion. so experts warn, it's never too late to get prepared. tomorrow, the academy's great shake out event. schoolchildren will learn about everything that they need to do to be prepared. so that will take place tomorrow here at the academy. so laura and john, your tank of
