good morning, folks. you're looking at northbound 101 with all of these headlights. a little heavier that you would expect because we had a sig alert. all lanes are clear. i'll follow and let you know as we continue to recover. mike, thank you very much. right now they are down but far from out. on course for a comeback. this morning the giants battling back from that tough loss an very rough weather out there looking to even the score against st. louis. this morning the giants now trail the cardinals 2-1 in that best of seven national league championship series. >> but we can do it. we have team coverage this morning. meteorologist christina loren tracking the game time weather, but let's start with scott reese live at busch stadium in st. louis where the giants are putting the ball in tim lincecum's hands. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. yeah, you mentioned down but not out, far from it. down 2-1 in the best of seven.
6:45 am
a far cry from where they were in the division series against cincinnati when the giants were down 2-0 in a best of five and came back to win three straight on the road in historic fashion. that said, they have got to get past the bumps in the road last night, not the least of which was a three and a half hour rain delay. the ball game was on track to be by far the quickest that they have played in the postseason and all told it wound up about six and a half hours thanks to the rain. the fans muddled in the concourse for several hours and the pleasure huddled in their own clubhouse but they understand it's part of the game and this is a playoff scenario, so they knew they were going to finish the ball game. >> you know, rain delays are going to happen. it's just a matter of just having mental toughness and just be ready for whatever. >> reporter: and we'll do it all again later this afternoon. game time is just after 5:00 out on the west coast. and of course pregame coverage begins at 4:00 over on comcast sportsnet bay area. the good news is that the

6:47 am
if you want to get any outdoor activities taken care of now is the time to do so. temperatures are going to be hot today but this is the halftime day. we'll peak and see that high pressure ridge driving those winds offshore so we do have elevated fire danger yet again today. however, look at what is racing towards us. a very significant system developing. it's going to start digging into the bay area monday into tuesday bringing about widespread, measurable precipitation. and your temperatures today, subtract about 30 degrees from your daytime high and that's what we're expecting as we head through next tuesday of next week, so major changes just around the corner. scarf weather, mitten weather returning to the bay but not yet. 94 today, 88 bayside and 80 at the coast. mike has had a tough, tough job this morning. any improvement out there on the roadways? >> tremendous and humongous backup. tremendous improvement after the sig alert alecleared north of h.

6:49 am
that's why we see slowing all the way through the toll plaza. highway 92 westbound, that is your commute direction, that's the reason for a little slowing as you approach 101, but san mateo and foster city not so much a big issue. remember the san mateo bridge closes starting tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m. through the weekend. also the next weekend because of retrofit work. the bay bridge toll plaza, things are pretty standard as far as the backup going past west grand avenue and into the maze, but no drama other than your usual backup coming out of oakland and over towards the span. back to you guys. >> thank you, mike. new this morning, we are learning that one of the two taliban militants accused of shooting a teenage girl was detained and released by the pakistani military back in 2009. the suspect had been arrested after a series of taliban attacks, but was eventually released because there wasn't enough evidence to hold him. in the meantime, "the new york times" reports the shooting

6:52 am
call for a fire at a small home here. after firefighters arrived sometime around midnight. they say only one person was in the home at the time. neighbors tell us that this is the home of a retired san francisco firefighter who lived here with a girlfriend. i just spoke with an investigator an here's what he had to say. >> sometimes people die in fires and it's an accident or something of that nature. also, people die in fires based on a homicide. we're not that far into this investigation to determine which one is which. >> reporter: now, most of the fire was actually in the back of the home and the attic, but the strange thing is looking at it from the front, you can barely tell there was a fire at all. the coroner's department has not been here. >> okay. we're losing our signal there, but the coroner's office we understand has been called out to that scene. they haven't arrived just yet.

6:55 am
effect on the local companies. scott. >> good morning. today is the day this could really hit hard what we've been talking about. we don't know, but we have heard from several sources that sunnyvale chip maker amd could announce absolutely huge layoffs today. again, this is partly from talk from company insiders, it's partly reliant on other reports from other newspapers, "the wall street journal" and honestly part gut instinct. companies often release big news when they release financials. the chip business has been very tough lately. intel recently point out it hasn't added a job to the state in ten years. amd has been warning about its financials. you know chips put the silicon in silicon valley, but amd and intel don't make the chips that you find in iphones and ipads. so there's your problem. >> that's kind of amazing how quickly things change here. thank you, scott. 6:55. some high-flying stunts going on

6:59 am
atmosphere at 25,000 miles an hour and then start slowing down and breaking up into pieces. it's estimated that pieces can hit the ground between 200 and 400 miles an hour. this morning scientists are trying to determine if there were any pieces left and where they might be. one thing that could help in locating pieces is if people would check their home surveillance monitors. now, those cameras could have caught video of the meteor and those locations and trajectories are just great data in their investigations. now, tonight we're supposed to see those orionid meteor showers. this meteor that fell last night is not a part of those orionid showers. live in nasa ames, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >> once in a lifetime citing there. we finish up with the day's top story. firefighters make a gruesome discovery inside a home. the sheriff's office says a body was found inside that home. investigators calling this one
