final time president obama and former governor mitt romney can share a few laughs. they did just that. last night the two shook hands and smiled just 48 hours after their contentious debate laying down their political swords to headline the most famous dining experience in politics, the al smith dinner in new york city, hosted by the catholic archdiocese. both men worked the one-liners as artfully as they sparred tuesday night. here are a few moments people will likely be talking to about today. >> i was actually hoping the president would bring joe biden along this evening because he'll laugh at anything. >> i felt really well rested after the nice, long nap i had in the first debate. >> i particularly want to apologize to chris matthews. four years ago i gave him a thrill up his leg. this time around i gave him a stroke. >> as president obama surveys the waldorf banquet room with everyone in white tie and finery, you have to wonder what

blame it on pope john paul ii. >> we're both thinking ahead of our final debate on monday. the question that is on the minds of millions of americans watching at home, is this happening again? why aren't they putting on "the voice?" >> the topic is foreign policy. spoiler alert. we got bin laden. so there were plenty of laughs. there was also serious political news. the latest nbc news wall street journal marist polls which include tuesday's second debate show that president obama is maintaining his lead over governor mitt romney in two key battleground states. in iowa the president has the support of 51% of likely voters as compared to mr. romney's 43%, an eight-point margin which is unchanged from september. in wisconsin the president is ahead by six points among likely voters, 51 to 45% which is also virtually unchanged from last month. and both candidates will be back on the trail today in key states.

president obama will attend a campaign event in fairfax, virginia. after that mr. obama will reportedly head to camp david to prepare for monday's third and final presidential debate. governor romney and his running mate paul ryan will attend a rally in daytona beach, florida, where country music star john rich is scheduled to perform. and a reminder to you, our coverage of the third and final presidential debate begins monday night, 9:00 eastern, 6:00 pacific right here on nbc. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. we're going to begin with a bit of political hijinks where one man wanted his dad to win a florida election at all costs. the son of an incumbent school superintendant was caught stealing the campaign signs of his dad's opponent. the alleged thief is also a city councilman and assistant principal. state police is now investigating. all right. now to texas where some high school cheerleaders fought the law and won. a judge ruled in favor of the

students who were barred from putting bible versus on banners at high school games. religious themed banners will likely stay in place throughout the school year since the trial will not be held until june 22nd. the lava from one of the world's most active volcanoes is rising to record heights. the pool of molten rock has been rising for past few months and is within 150 feet from the top of the volcano's summit. scientists say if the trend continues, it will eventually spill out of the volcano. and finally, a tidal wave of dust shut down traffic on several roadways in oklahoma. the dust storm triggered multi-car accidents and blackout conditions in some areas. officials say the storm system was fueled by 50-mile-per-hour winds and dry wheat fields. bad combo. now for a look at your national and regional weather. here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> arizona has shown many dust storms in the past. they're not so familiar with it

in the central planes. we're watching a little storm that moved through the northwest yesterday. the green on this map still does show some rain. a lot of mitt the higher elevations of the cascades and the olympics, some of it passing into northern portions of idaho. it looks like a few of the showers will creep towards portland here shortly. it's not going to be that bad. much of your day will be dry. there will be a few periods of showers out there. 24-hour rainfall totals, a minorly impressive amount. quarter inch around olympia. seattle almost up to another inch of rain. we're starting to make up some of our rainfall deficit over the last month or two. with the next storm system, as it goes through the day we'll get the instability showers behind it. we'll see light rainfall amounts. the bulk of moisture has already moved inland. dry in most of california. the winds did shift. only in the low 80s in many areas like downtown l.a. instead of the impressive heat you've had the last couple days.

welcome back to "early today." here are some of the stories making news this morning. in a case that will almost certainly go to the supreme court, a federal appeals court has ruled the 1996 defense of marriage act that defines a marriage as a union between a man and a woman is unconstitutional. the court said gay americans deserves the same kind of constitutional protections as other victims of discrimination. next up, the boy scouts. thousands of secret files were finally made public. they reveal a widespread effort by the organization to cover up more than 1200 cases of alleged molestation by scout masters and others. the so-called perversion files were ordered released by the oregon supreme court. the boy scouts issued an apology to the victims and their families. the 14-year-old pakistani

girl shot in the head by the taliban last week for promoting education is able to stand up with help. malala yousef is a was transferred for treatment earlier this week. doctors say she is battling an infection and is, quote, not out of the woods yet. this morning "the washington post" is reporting the cia is asking the white house to bolster the armed drone fleet by as men as ten new armed drones. andy warhol's painting "statue of liberty" went on display in paris before heading to auction in new york where it could fetch more than $35 million. in health news, a new study shows that annual doctor checkups aren't helping healthy people. test subjects who received annual physicals had the same death rate as those who didn't. so when do trips to the doctor pay off? going for a specific test or screening, such as mammograms. also, people with ongoing health issues like high blood pressure should regularly see their doctor.

>> announcer: early today health is brought to you by vagisil ph balanced wash. here's an early look at how wall street will begin this friday. the dow closed at 13,548 after losing eight points yesterday. the s&p was down three. the nasdaq fell 31. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in tokyo the nikkei added 19 points while in hong kong the hang seng was up 3. frnltsz well, earnings are already rolling in on the street. this morning general electric, part owner of this network posted quarterly earnings in line with estimates as solid demands for turbines for locomotives help offset weak demand. well, in brussels this morning, europe's leaders took a big step agreeing to install a new supervisor over eurozone banks next year so that bailout funds can be pumped directly into ailing banks. meanwhile, smoke filled the streets of athens as riot police clashed with protestors angry about severe cuts that come along with the international cash.

well, back at home, a weak earnings report from google came out midday instead of after the bell. google plunged, trades were halted for hours, and markets never recovered. later, microsoft said dwindling pc demand hurt its profit. bad news before its big windows 8 launch. more pc fallout from chip maker amd now planning to layoff 15% of its staff. the world trade organization handed the obama administration a small but significant victory barring china from imposing duties on steel exports made at ohio based ak steel. the average price of regular gas is down to $3.74 a gallon. well, dunkin donuts munchkins may have a new sibling, bagel bunchkins. brilliant. dunkin reportedly applied for the trademark, but no word yet on whether the bagel holes might arrive. victoria's secret unveiled its annual fantasy bra. the gem encrusted floral

well, in sports we're going to begin in san francisco with a little thursday night football. in a largely defensive battle, the 49ers' frank gore rushed for 131 yards and alex smith threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to delaney welker for a 13-6 victory over the seattle seahawks in sole possession of the nfc west. in college football oregon's kenjon barner ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns as the number two ducks romped over arizona state last night 43-21.

let's go over to baseball. the cardinals adam wainwright threw seven innings of four-hit ball and st. louis roughed up tim lincecum and the san francisco bullpen for an 8-3 victory that puts them a win away from the world series. and in detroit miguel cabrera and jhonny peralta each hit two home runs, and it was a four-run fourth inning against yankee ace cc sabathia that sent the tigers to the world series after a four game sweep of the new york yankees. announcer ernie johnson has that call. take a listen. >> this is going to do it. prince fielder wants it. the tigers are going to the world series for the 11th time in franchise history. >> get the brooms out. all right. finally, she's known as the flying squirrel. gabby douglas, the first african-american to bring home the gold medal in gymnastics all around competition was honored as sports woman of the year by the women's sports foundation.

weather in the northwest. the front is going to try to push through during the day today. temperatures a little cool there. a little cool on the coastline of california. interior sections just fine. as we go through the weekend, the big player in the weather will be an upper level low spinning off the coast and will continually send showers and cool weather into the northwest. it won't rain the entire weekend, but showery from seattle to portland and all of washington in oregon state. it may sink as far south as medford. california, you look to stay dry at this point: we had a good stretch. it's over. >> thanks for the updated news. thanks. now for entertainment news. "paranormal activity force" should haunt the number one spot with an expected $41 million, and that is not bad considering it only cost $5 million to make. tyler perry's "alex cross" should stand in the number two

spot with $15 million. elsewhere, the former companion of anna nicole smith could once again face prison time. a california appellate court has overturned a previous ruling that threw out a 2010 conspiracy conviction on charges howard k. stern used fake names and false pretenses to acquire prescription drugs for the late actress. actress eva longoria is apologizing for a message she retweeted about mitt romney that referred to him as a racist misogynistic expletive. and finally, could this be the weekend justin timberlake and jessica biel tie the knot? >> when are we on baby watch? how long does that take? another month? >> three months. radaronline reports guests have been arriving at a location near naples, italy, but that they have been told the exact location will be secret until the day of the wedding. >> ready to be put on the spot? >> what? >> who is marrying up? >> that is a very difficult question. i would say they actually manage

well, in prague some turtles have truly learned how to break out of their shell. a czech zoo says it successfully bred crown river turtles for the very first time in captivity. zoo officials said putting the eggs in water prompted the turtles to hatch and then start swimming. isn't that cute? it is. once common, these turtles are now classified as threatened species because of extensive hunting. well, a brazilian artist's house has become a tourist magnet completely by accident. the house has an uncanny resemblance to the work of legendary spanish architect antoni gaudi. the resemblance is all a coincidence though. the artist says he has never even seen gaudi's work and said the look of his house came from the fact he simply wanted to put plants on the roof. and finally, the pandas were on parade in washington, d.c., but it's not what you may think. 23 people competed to be panda
