very good morning to everybody. always happy to have you along with us. it is 4:30, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning, especially that forecast. meteorologist christina loren, good morning. >> good morning. everybody wants to see the seven-day once the weekend is upon us. this morning it is cool out there. the natural coolant has been turned back on. i'm talking about the fog machine. very much so in san francisco. your visibilities are going to continue to drop off the next hour but look at your temperatures. you're 65 in san francisco, we're at 66 to start, just four degrees away from 70 in santa cruz. and today we're going to shave off 10 to 15 degrees from yesterday's record-breaking heat. the rain arrives by the second of the weekend so lots to sort out in your full forecast. to check on your friday drive, good morning, mike. >> we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza where up to a couple of minutes ago i did see a line of trucks, big rigs, waiting to get through that toll plaza. that has cleared. we'll show you the maze and the

maps. speed sensors show no problems on the approach. there's construction 880 between 980 and 16th. at the top of your screen let's zoom in here. heading away from the richmond freeway, there's reports of a car fire approaching harbor. it sounds like everything is out of lanes but it was a big distraction. no word on any injuries and it does look like there's a little slowing and distraction, but light traffic there. we'll track it, guys. back to you. 4:32. the secrets are out. after a heated battle, the boy scouts of america released the so-called perversion files, documents detailing allegations involving scout masters and volunteers accused of sexually abusing boy scouts. the allegations stretch across the country, including cases here in the bay area, dating pack to the 1950s. george kiriyama has more on the stunning revelations found in the perversion files. >> reporter: inside these boxes are the so-called perversion

files. more than 1200 cases of known or suspected child abusers who at one time were in the boy scouts. files kept pby the boy scouts fr decades but now made public by two attorneys in portland, oregon. >> the boy scouts knew they had an institution-wide problem with child abuse. >> reporter: the national president of the boy scouts of america on the most part agrees saying, quote, in certain cases our response to these incidents and our efforts to protect youth were plainly insufficient, inappropriate or wrong. the files contain information about reported abusers in 49 states, from 1965 to 1985. a number of abusers are from the bay area. each file has a record sheet and letters. some cases went to authorities, others did not. >> it's a lesson that can't be learned well enough. and what these files represent is really the pain and the

anguish of thousands of untold scouts. >> reporter: the boy scouts of america called the perversion files the ineligible volunteer files. they were started in the 1920s in an effort to keep them from returning. >> these are confidential files as part of our youth protection program. >> reporter: the scouts feel they have a system in place that prevents would be abusers from becoming scout leaders. required background checks and training programs are part of that. they also have dvds and books. >> how to protect your child against child abuse. >> reporter: addressing the issue. >> we will not let a leader walk into this office and aploy for a leadership position in the boy scouts of america without taking the youth protection training. they will be turned away. new this morning, the funeral for a murdered east bay schoolteacher is taking place in just a few hours from right now. friends, family and relatives harping the life of susie ko at

10:00 this morning. the 55-year-old was found stabbed to death in her home earlier this month. her car was also missing. a couple linked to that crime spree in southern california has been arrested in connection with ko's death. they were arrested in washington state after being spotted driving ko's car. the tight-knit restaurant community shaken up. a popular cook is fighting to stay alive. police found him lifeless after breaking up a large fight this week. >> he's a really, really good person and he was -- he was planning on going home soon. he was ready to leave, he missed his family. he wasn't planning on being here past next christmas. >> reporter: brandy is afraid her friend and co-worker may never see his wife and four children in mexico again. the popular san francisco cook is in critical condition.

>> he's a beautiful person and there's, you know, a line of people in the hallway at the hospital just waiting. >> reporter: police found the 39-year-old in the street at 16th and valencia after breaking up a large fight around 2:00 a.m. tuesday morning. rocha says his heart stopped. no one is sure exactly what happened, but friends believe he was targeted. >> bad element of the mission kind of target guys who work in restaurants or know they carry a lot of cash in their pockets. >> reporter: he worked in several san francisco hot spots but spent most of his time at serpentine. >> i filled in for him and everyone is very emotional. >> reporter: pause the man known for caring for others while he worked to send money home to his family is now fighting for his life. >> several people to one apartment, so he kind of -- you know, he cooks for everybody. he's just -- we just call him

the godfather. he's everybody's go-to guy. >> reporter: rocha is hoping someone who knows what happened steps up for him. >> these are the guys that make it happened and we're supposed to take care of them. it is 4:37 right now. the port of oakland's executive director is on paid administrative leave after allegations of excessive spending at a houston strip club, which he expensed to oakland. the port commission making that decision late last night, but the decision coming after they got appear earful from seiu members. they packed that meeting expressing their anger on allegations maritime director james quan racked up a tab over $4500 entertaining clients at a strip club in houston. >> of course we will make further comment once we have a full investigation with all the details of all of these items. >> commissioners have hired

outside counsel to look into these allegations. the president says it will be a couple of weeks before more statements will be made on this particular issue. let's check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. how are we looking on this friday morning? >> we are looking so good. good morning to you, you made it to friday, and this weekend is going to be downright lovely and i don't use that term loosely. let's take you outside and show you the bay bridge. i want to show you downtown san francisco where the fog has returned and that means we'll see a much cooler day this afternoon. temperatures will drop off by 10 to 15 degrees. let's get right to your temperatures this morning. we hit 92 in santa rosa yesterday. these are all new records, btw. 90 in napa, 86 in oakland and 86 in san francisco. this morning we're starting out very mild because of that record-breaking heat yesterday, even though it's almost completely clear in your interior valley. 65 in san francisco, 60 in napa,

63 in san jose. so for today air quality has dramatically improved and your temperatures have improved as well. look at this, 81 degrees in livermore, 79 for fairfield, 74 along the east shore and even san francisco will hit the 70s. but we have changes, big-time changes just around the corner. first let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. we'll take you to 101 where this set of lights, road cruise at northbound 101 from embarcadero up to university right about where our camera is but this time they're blocking the faster lanes so you have your two lanes off to the right which are clear through the area. a little slowing at the scene, which you should do. no big deal on our maps. we show not a lot of drama for the roadway here and see another road crew still on the dumbarton bridge, highway 84. as you get farther north we had an issue on the ralston off-ramp, minor accident there. that cleared in the last few minutes. a smooth drive but more construction towards 92.

time from the east bay this morning. we're really watching the morning commute for you. it looks like traffic is picking up just a bit. we will check it with mike. it is 4:44. speaking of oakland, oakland police are urging students to stay alert this morning after an armed man sent a campus into lockdown. it all started just before 11:00 a.m. thursday at holy name university in the oakland hills. a witness spotted a map with a gun tucked in his waist band. students were told to stay inside as police searched for him. after three hours they found nothing and the campus eventually reopened. given what happened at oikos university, students at holy name say they were certainly scared. >> i feel scared. our school is really expensive. it's secure. we have security guards everywhere. we pay a lot of money. it's a catholic school and i love my school. so the fact that someone would bring a gun to campus is like scary. >> other people on campus

reportedly had conversations with the man and they say he seemed disoriented. also in oakland a chilling letter putting that city on alert. somebody posting flyers downtown urging people to get violent and defend the city during an occupy protest next thursday. the flyers encouraging people to bring bats and beat anarchists and vandals dressed in black. the group behind that flier calls it is defend our oakland movement or d.o.o.m. october 25th marking the first eviction of the occupy encampment outside of city hall. police right now urging protesters to please remain peaceful. 4:45. are you tired of those annoying ropo calls? so is the federal government. the ftc has announced a new plan of attack. a contest with a $50,000 cash reward for the person, small team or businesses that can come up with the best way to stop the unwanted calls.

the contest runs from october 25th to january 17th. go to the ftc's website for more information. >> we need to get together and work on that. let's do it. the word on wall street this morning, google. no, it's not good news for the tech giant. a blunder before the closing bell sends stocks around the world tumbling overnight. for that and the rest of the news before the bell we turn things over to jackie live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. futures are lower today after we saw stocks falling on thursday. a rise in new filings for unemployment offset an upbeat report on manufacturing, but the story yesterday was google's disappointing earnings hanging over the tech sector and the broader market. more on that in a second. microsoft is another name to watch. it could impact trading as its results miss analysts' forks. today we'll get data on existing home sales and earnings from general electric and mcdonald's. the dow slipping 8 to 13,548.

the nasdaq losing 31 to close at 3,072. i promised you i would have more on google. certainly the talk of the town yesterday and not exactly for the most positive reason. the company's third quarter earnings report was accidentally released more than three hours early. google is blaming that on r.r. donnelly, a firm that publishes its financial result. on the first blush the numbers were not great and still were bad when they were confirmed a few hours later. google's profits missed forks. sales of online ads are slowing and google is being hurt as more customers shift to mobile devices where it doesn't have as big of a presence. its stock price dropped 8% wiping out $22 billion of the company's value. >> human error there. all right, thank you very much. >> might be a lean holiday at google. you know those elaborate holiday meals that take days of prepping and this year could take more money.

shoppers will pay about 15% more for turkey, trimmings and other favorites. the price of apples and apple cider has increased the most, up 30%. turkeys, gobble this up, up 20% this year. dairy products are up 10%. >> some of my good friends are turkeys. >> and they're ugly too, right here. >> 4:48. you're one of the cool turkeys. >> i happen to think giffords are beautiful any time of year. good morning to you. 4:48 right now. we've got a really good-looking day shaping up. if you're sick of the heat and want that natural cooling giving your ac a break, look at that, the fog has returned over san francisco. has not yet lord to the surface. that will occur the next couple of hours and likely interrupt your perfect visibility you've had the past couple of days. we're in the 50s and 60s. you're at 65 to start in san francisco. already hit your high for this

time of year. 63 in napa and 55 degrees in novato so even with a full deck of clouds for most of the day in the city you're still going to hit 70 degrees. five-degree climb from now until 4:00 p.m. we're at 62 in san jose and comfortable in santa cruz. this weekend the low clouds are turning our temperatures lower. high pressure taking a hike to the east for the weekend, that will cool us off, and an area of low pressure moves in bringing major changes. widespread rain. when we meet back here monday morning, a sloppy commute setting up. 60s, fog and drizzle just about every single day next week so enjoy these temperatures while they last. this is the last day for the 80s. 81 in livermore, 76 in santa teresa, 76 in los gatos and right around 76 degrees in redwood city. the next three days work out like this. we drop to the low 70s. then tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, bringing in the rain, bringing in the 60s

inland. starting to feel more like winter than fall. yeah, i see some people not very happy about this seven-day forecast in the studio right now. what do you guys think? >> a little chilly but i guess we'll deal with it. we get sunshine all year round. for one brief night they chill things out on that race for the white house. a little dinner, a few drinks and some pretty solid comedy. >> and we're getting to that time when folks are making up their minds. just the other day, honey boo boo endorsed me, so that's a big relief. >> president obama and governor romney attending the 67th annual al smith memorial foundation dinner in new york city last night. for much of the evening they sat just one chair apart. the only person right in the middle separating them was the host, cardinal timothy dolan. they also shared the very same stage. >> president obama and i are each very lucky to have one person who's always in our corner, someone we can lean on an someone who's a comforting

welcome back, everybody, on a friday morning. feels good to say that and feels great to know it. that is a live look at the south bay over san jose. a couple of lights twinkling in the darkness. the sun we're being told will come up once again today, another good news. >> is that breaking news? >> we're all over it. it's 4:54. excitement over that meteor that streaked across the bay area sky hasn't faded just yet.

people now looking for traces of the meteor on the ground. some believe it may have fallen somewhere near martinez. others searching even further north. so far no one reportedly found any evidence of the meteor but a lot of other interesting things have shown up. >> i found a bone and i found some lizards. >> but no -- >> nope, no meteorite. >> what a sweetie pie. they plan to continue their search today. from fire in the sky to fire to the earth. higher lava levels inside a volcano raising concerns about a possible eruption. scientists for the usgs say the lava inside hawaii's volcano reached record height on october 14th and has been climbing for several months. scientists say if it continues to rise, the lava will eventually spill out of that volcano, but they say it doesn't mean it's a sign of an imminent
