linemen can't play. their two starting running backs can't play. troy polamalu not there. the first first half, the bengals are all over them at home. and quietly back to the running game and dick lebeau makes a few changes on the defensive side and they shut down the bengals. >> al: it was that killer interception in the first half with dalton trooiting hoying too the ball and on the back of a helmet. this will wrap it up for good. dwyer, he gets taken down from behind at the 9 yard line. so dwyer, number 3 on a depth chart but number one in the hearts of steelers fans tonight, 17 carries, 122 yards, 32 on that one. >> cris: watch doug legursky. here's a guy playing basically in place of the best center in the game in maurkice pouncey. he has been terrific. willie colon helps on the double

team and run up the gut and everybody in the house knows you're going to run the football and the pittsburgh steelers can still run it and now a little victory formation and well deserved. they have had a great game. >> al: the kneel-down will end it. steelers rushed for 167 yards tonight. they outgained them 431 to 185. the time of possession, almost 37 minutes. they win one on the road and their first division game of the season, so 1-0 in the afc north. and they can start looking up at the baltimore ravens and feeling a whole lot better about things, after the events of this sunday. they go home next week to take on the washington redskins. cincinnati will have a bye week and then face denver. 24-17, pittsburgh wins it in cincinnati. the wendy's postgame is coming up. .

8:33 pm
8:34 pm
so the steelers get back to 3-3. the bengals have now lost nine straight to the big boys of the afc north. pittsburgh and baltimore. the players of the game, ben roethlisberger, jonathan dwyer. what a night for dwyer. 17 carries, 122 yards. the steelers more than doubled their per game average on the ground in this game. their average coming in a bit about 75 and they had 167 yards rushing. and ike taylor was on a.j. green. he had help, but, still, he had
8:35 pm
the primary assignment and held him to a single catch. ryan clark is on the field along with ben roethlisberger. at the join michele tafoya. >> michele: ben, mike tomless lynn told me at halftime you guys were continually shooting theirselves in the foot. how did you guys overcome that to end up winning this game? >> it was tough. i take a lot on myself. throw a pick, a fumble. put ourselves in too many holes. we had to fight and win this game. we did in in all phases and had each other's back the whole day. >> michele: the running game was productive no redman our mendenhall or pouncey. how did it work? >> next man, take nothing a away from the guys not out there but proud of the way the young guys and other guys stepped up and never a doubt they wouldn't do that. >> michele: you had a meeting with the offensive players this week to talk about the urgency of winning. what do you think connect that meeting to this win?
8:36 pm
>> we got to come out and play. we said we wanted to close the game out. missed two opportunities there late in the fourth quarter to close it out and keep our defense out but the last drive kept them off the field like we wanted to do. >> michele: ben, thank you. ryan clark, the one drive in the first half, they had 80 yards. primarily running the ball on the ground. after that, really nothing. what changed? >> just sense of urgency. we kind of understood what they were going to try to do to us. the early success was tough and try to get them off the field. after that, we got our gaps right and able to win the game. >> michele: they have a huge offensive weapon in a.j. green yet you held them to pretty much nothing all night. how was that done? >> ike followed him all around and coach lebeau gave us calls we could have guys on top of them and jamming him at the line and safeties over the top and gave us opportunities to make plays and deter andy from throwing him the ball. >> you come in here 2-3 and now even at 3-3. you get a win on the road finally. >> that's right. >> michele: what does this win do for you guys? >> it's big.
8:37 pm
our first road win and division game and huge. put us in the hunt. a lot of teams at 3-3 going into this week. only two teams boof .500 so right in the race. >> michele: ryan, thank you. >> thank you very much. >> first road win of this season for the steelers as noted. they are 18-4 in cincinnati since 1991. we welcome in tony dungy from new york. your reaction to tonight's game. >> bob, we don't always talk about assistant coaches but i thought offensive coordinator todd haley really called an outstanding game, especially in the second half. he went to the running game which i didn't think he was going to do but they had some big success running the ball and did a great job using the runs in the red zone to get chris rainey going and a big third down run call to jonathan dwyer and once dwyer got rolling, that really set the stage for them to win this ball game. and as ryan clark just mentioned, i thought dick lebeau called an outstanding game too.
8:38 pm
he gave ike taylor a lot of help and dared cincinnati to beat them with other weapons and really took a.j. green away. >> so in many respects, especially in the second half, the steelers put it all together tonight. we have talked a lot about the afc today and tonight. what, in your view, was the big store coming out of the nfc? >> i think we have to look at the nfc east and the giants have been playing outstanding football. they have had two big wins in a row and been a lot of consternation about dallas but dallas is playing next week at home against the giants and if they win, they will be tied in the loss column and tony romo did an outstanding job against them and played maybe the best game i've seen him play in the opening night win. so the cowboys are right in position, as badly as things have gone the last two weeks. baltimore and arizona, those losses they got the ship righted today and they put themselves in position to have a big game against dallas -- or against the giants this week. >> tony, thanks. check with you next week.
8:39 pm
we turn to mike florio of pro football talk and we ask you to you to us through some of the day's big injuries. >> a couple of teams and a couple of big injuries potentially. running back maurice jones-drew of the jaguars left the game against the raiders early with a left foot injury. he was in street clothes on crutches with a walking boot in the second half of that game. the coach mike mularkey will update his status on monday and same game starting quarterback blaine gabbert left in the first half with an injury to his left shoulder. nonthrowing shoulder i'm told and mri i'm told will be conducted on monday. for the redskins tight end fred davis star player for that team is lost for the season with a torn achilles tendon. reports that chris cooley who was cut in august by the redskins has re-signed with the team pending a physical on monday. london fletcher, redskins linebacker, hat longest active streak of any player in the nfl right now with 231 straight appearances. that streak is in jeopardy. he has a hamstring injury and mri coming tomorrow.

carpenter labored through four innings, and giants star ryan vogelsong threw up a gem. 4 2/3 of no-hit ball. he went seven innings deep and led san francisco to a game 6 victory. >> he was on top of his game again. he's got great stuff. when he's locating, he's tough, and had it going on again tonight. and really was going in and out and had his good off-speed pitches going. you know, he's probably been as consistent as any starter we've had this year. >> i think i was sharper in game 2. you know, i had some good life on my two-seamer tonight. and i threw everything else just good enough to keep them off balance. but i had some good misses tonight. i had some location misses that i ended up getting swing and misses on. but stuffwise i think game 2 was better. but i'll take this one too. don't get me wrong. this place is amazing. these people show up, and i feed off of them.

8:53 pm
of what students are calling a fantasy slut league. now, this is new to parents, but apparently this has been an open secret among students here for years. the principal says the fantasy league has been in existence for five to six years and it was discovered during a recent freshman assembly on date rain prevention. now, according to the school, some of the school's varsity athletes set up the league in which female students are drafted, often unbeknownst to them, and that male students earn points for engaging in sexual activities with those female students. now, one piedmont student told us that the league was started as a private group on facebook, which is why parents were kept in the dark for so long. >> from what i've been told, two guys have a team of two girls and when girls like hook up with guys they get more points. and then i think the winning team is with the girls, like who hook up with most people. >> it's really upsetting to find out this is going on at the high school. i trust my daughter, but i would be really, really upset to know
8:54 pm
that it were anything that she was unknowingly part of. and it just makes me lose respect for the football team entirely. >> reporter: the principal has assured parents that the league has been put to a stop. however, it does not appear that any of the students are going to face disciplinary action. the superintendent would not go on camera tonight, but i received this statement from her. she said this is a matter of school and family working together to support our teens to make good choices and to treat each other with respect and dignity. we wanted to communicate to families to encourage adialogue and to inform parents of what we as a school community are doing to proactively address activities that are detrimental to the culture we want for our students." the principal also said the school will meet with the athletes at the beginning of each season to address this issue. live in piedmont, monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> all right. thank you, monte. a bay area scientist says a

discovery this weekend in the north bay could provide clues about the origins of earth and life. it's a piece of that meteor that exploded over the bay area last wednesday. and now he's really asking for the public's help to search your back yard or nearby park for more clues. and he says it's a race against time and rain. >> this is a little souvenir of our past. >> reporter: this little souvenir according to nasa scientist peter jeneskins could provide big clues about the history of the solar system, perhaps even about how life was formed on earth. it's a little bigger than a golf ball, and one very alert and curious woman in novato is to thank for the discovery. lisa webber says she never saw the bright streak of light over the bay area wednesday night that was captured in this surveillance video. she was inside her home and had just turned off the tv since the giants' playoff game was in rain delay. it was quiet. >> i was sitting in the kitchen and i hear this bum, ba bum bum like something hit the roof.
8:56 pm
>> reporter: she didn't think anything of the noise but two days later when she read about the meteor explosion and that debris from the meteor would likely be found in the north bay, she started to put two and two together. she found the unusual-looking rock in her back yard, and then with the help of a young neighbor who loves science and knew that meteorites and magnetic, well, they tested it. >> so we got a magnet, and sure enough. and we both started going, it's a meteor. >> reporter: she e-mailed nasa, and the next thing she knew jeneskins was on his way to her home. he found damage on her roof and confirmed this morning that that little rock is actually an important piece of history. >> this is only the 20th for which we have a trajectory in the atmosphere from video and photographic observation. >> of all time? >> of all time, yes. >> wow. anywhere in the world? >> anywhere in the world. >> reporter: he says he's so thankful the webbers took the time to find the meteorite but he also thinks there's more and has an urgent plea for anyone who lives in the area from fairfax to novato and up to

sonoma. he hopes people will go outside tonight or tomorrow before the rain hits and search for more meteorites. he thinks the largest chunks should be near sonoma. >> it's just all about the science. >> and so it will be really interesting to study this and see what it's going to tell us. about the origin of the earth or the origin of life on the earth. >> scientists are asking anyone who may have a security camera to go back to wednesday night at about 8:00 as well to see if the camera may have captured the meteor streaking across the sky. the more video they have the more information they can gather about its speed and direction. all right. there was an unexpected announcement from caltrans today. repair work on the san mateo bridge will be completely finished by tomorrow morning. that means the bridge will not shut down again next weekend. this is a live look at the bridge tonight, where it remains shut down in both directions right now. so crews can finish installing a new seismic joint and replace a section of the deck. caltrans says the bridge is still scheduled to open by 5:00 tomorrow morning. and rob, you wanted to point out
8:58 pm
if someone finds one of those meteorites don't use the magnetic test. >> that's right. they want to keep the magnetic field the way it is naturally. >> okay.
