well, you've heard of fantasy football leagues but what about a fantasy sex league? this morning the scandal that's rocked a prominent east bay high school. >> reporter: and the weather will be having an effect on your morning commute. i'm arturo santiago live at the san mateo bridge. we'll have details on this coming up in a live report. >> go, giants! >> i'm totally confident. >> oh, yeah, tonight is the night. one more win and the giants are headed to the world series. >> that's what i'm talking about. right now we're talking about a live look over san jose. you can see some clouds out there. it's going to be a wet and windy monday morning. it is october 22nd. this is "today in the bay."

ah, yes, 4:31 on the nose. a very good monday morning to one al all. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get things started this monday morning and first check our forecast. >> good morning. we've got a lot to talk about when it comes to our forecast. look at our radar lit up like a christmas tree and we haven't even hit october 31st, halloween, yet. we are sandwiched between rain bands right now. we do have a lot of rain on the way to san francisco. you can see all that orange and yellow embedded within the green. that is going to make for a very rough morning drive. also embedded within those showers we're expecting a few thunderstorms to pop up. we'll talk about what this means for your commute, how long we'll be dealing with these showers. i can tell you we've got rain chances just about every single day this week with this wave being the more intense. 4:31. let's and check on your drive.

>> we are talking about a very hectic commute this morning. nothing to report on right now but as the morning gets going remember we're talking about rain. this is the first significant rain we've seen of the season so just use caution. we do have a car fire on 580 westbound that's slowing traffic in both directions. it happened about an hour ago. otherwise nothing big to report on this morning as of yet but we'll keep you posted. you heard anthony and christina just say not only will the rain make the morning commute more difficult, wind also a major factor. that's a big deal to anyone commuting across bay area bridges. arturo santiago is live at the san mateo bridge which actually just reopened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. and we are right at the toll crossing on the san mateo bridge, 92 and bridgewater avenue. the bridge did just reopen a few minutes ago.

some workers just took down the barriers to the entrance here. it's really a good example of how drivers will need to be extra cautious on the roads this morning. as we just heard, this is the first significant rainfall we've had in a while. that means there's been plenty of time for grime and oil to build up on the surface of the roads. when these rains get those surfaces wet, the conditions can become extremely slippery. add to that the windy conditions and driving can get particularly tricky. as you heard from christina, the wind and the rain will be making your morning rush hour drive with you, so as always the advice is to slow down, leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you. be extra alert and bring plenty of patience. i know it's monday but it's probably a good idea to leave your house early so that you can take your time in getting to work or school. we're live at the san mateo bridge. i'm arturo santiago, "today in

make it happen. game seven tonight at at&t park. this one starts at 5:00. matt cain will be pitching for the giants. starting at 5:00 this morning, we will be live from at&t park with a nice preview of tonight's do-or-die ball game between the giants and the cardinals. lance armstrong will in fact be stripped of all seven of his tour de france titles and be banned from the sport for life. cycling's international governing body just making this announcement during a press conference in switzerland. the u.s. anti-doping agency says it will not be appealing that ruling. that is the same agency that initially released this report accusing armstrong of leading a massive doping program with his team. this will allow tour de france organizers to officially remove armstrong's name forever from the record books. one man is dead, another in custody after a bizarre string of events that led to an officer h officer-involved shooting. several people called police to

report two naked men arguing, smashing car windows and trying to burn down their home. when officers arrived, one man ran inside 8 smoking house. the other pointed a shotgun at an officer, prompting police to shoot and kill him. police pulled the second man out of the house which was seriously damaged in that fire. investigators say one or both of the men were under the influence of drugs. almost a dozen people could be faces charges after a fight broke out at an earthquakes game. police were removing more than 100 people from the stadium last night. they say all the trouble started about an hour into the game with some l.a. galaxy supporters that apparently got into a brawl. stadium security trying to break it up and other fans got in the way. they had to call in backup from santa clara, sunnyvale and san jose. >> we saw the whole thing. >> three police officers came busting through me saying move, move, move. they went straight to the l.a. galaxy team, like where the headquarters was, and there were

smoke bombs being thrown. it was intense, it was crazy. they kicked them all out of there. >> at least seven people were arrested. fortunately, nobody was hurt. santa clara police are asking for your help in locating a suspected hit and run driver. a 37-year-old man was hit at the intersection of maryann drive and benton street. it happened two weeks ago. the victim is recovering from non-life threatening injuries. the suspect was seen driving a new black ford mustang with a tru truck-mounted spoiler. the teenage driver who struck and killed an east bay man and his daughter will be sentenced today. 18-year-old david rosen was driving an suv when he fatally struck a h41-year-old man and hs daughter. the pair had been riding their bikes on a concord sidewalk. rosen admits, yes, he was speeding when he killed them.

because rosen was tried as a minor, he will be released from jail when he turns 21 years old. a fantasy game involving students and sex from a prominent east bay high school is having some real-life consequences. the principal at piedmont high school sent a letter to parents telling them some varsity athletes created a so-called fantasy slut league to chart their sexual experiences. it's news to parents, but it's apparently been an open secret among students for more than five years. it was discovered during a recent freshman assembly on date rape prevention. >> from what i've been told, two guys have a team of two girls and when girls hook up with guys, they get more points and then i think the winning team is with the girls who hook up with most people. >> the league started as a private group on facebook of the the principal assured parents the league has been put to a stop. at this point it does not appear any of the students are going to

face disciplinary action because all of the activity is said to have happened off campus. residents and relatives of the victims of that deadly pg&e pipeline explosion in san bruno right now calling for the appointment of a new california public utilities commission president. they want him down. the group will hold a news conference today calling on governor jerry brown to oust michael peevy. they claim he is oversympathetic to pg&e and has failed the residents of san bruno and put other californians at risk. eight people were killed and more than 50 hurt in the september 2010 explosion. a busy weather morning today. rain going to come down and wreak havoc on the morning commute. let's check the forecast with christina. >> yeah, we're not just talking about a little system. take a look at this, widespread rainfall over northern california pushing into southern california as we speak. and what you'll notice from this radar probable cause toicture,

have dropped to 6500 feet this morning and will continue to lower after the cold front comes through. as we get this frontal passage over the course of the next few hours, it is going to get windy and sloppy just in time for your morning commute. right now the heaviest bands are starting to push onshore along the marin county coastline. watch out for some really thick pockets out there, heavy rain coming down from san francisco all the way across the golden gate bridge up through marin county. you're getting hit pretty hard in mill valley right now. this will continue to trend to the south. we're expecting our first showers in san jose, light to moderate shurz owers as we get 8:00, 9:00 and rush hour. give yourself plenty of time. also what does this mean for the giants game? we'll dive into that in addition to your seven-day forecast ready to go in my next report. everything good when it comes to the san mateo bridge? >> it is good. it is flowing smoothly. keep in mind it is raining sos why a little extra caution this

welcome back, everyone. good monday morning to you. police say 45-year-old radcliff haughton had a history of violence. he had slashed his wife's car tires earlier this month. investigators say he went into his wife's workplace yesterday morning opening fire. three have died, four others were hurt. he then allegedly killed himself.

a candlelight vigil was held at the salon last night. funeral plans are being finalized for former south dakota senator george mcgovern. a public viewing will be thursday and friday in sioux falls. the 90-year-old died yesterday of natural causes. mcgovern if you recall lost the 1972 election to president richard nixon in a landslide. while serving in the senate he was appear outspoken critic of the vietnam war. after leaving capitol hill, mcgovern focused his attention to helping solving world hunger. 4:45. big earnings reports are out this week and a major recall from nissan. for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell we turn to bertha coombs live at cnbc world headquarters. good monday morning. >> reporter: good monday morning to you. we've got the futures pointing to slightly higher open at this point. stocks fell sharply on friday. investors reacting to disappointing housing data and also earnings from the likes of microsoft and mcdonald's. the market still ended

relatively unchanged overall for the week. no economic data on tap. we just got a report this morning from caterpillar in terms of earnings. its revenues came up light. its outlook is a little like. not a huge surprise but basically they're saying the macroeconomic situation globally remains top. we'll also get data on new home sales, durable goods, consumer sentiment, third quarter gdp and tomorrow the fed begins a two-day meeting. this afternoon we will hear from marissa mayer, the first time she'll be on the conference call to report earnings. she's had a very busy october. the dow friday dropping 205 points to 13,343. the nasdaq losing 67 to 3005. knee snissan is recalling 1 altimas. bolts in the power steering system could become loose and fall out, increasing the

possibility of a crash. now, the recall will begin next week and dealers will tighten the bolts properly. separately reports say nissan will begin offering a cheaper version of its electric vehicle, the leaf. the company sold fewer than 12,000 in the first half of the year. that was well below its target. be careful if you've got one of those nissan altimas. >> yeah, steering wheel coming off while you're driving, not a good thing. thank you, bertha. >> exactly. i'll keep my brakes pushed very hard if that would happen. 4:47, christina loren is here. what can you tell us? >> it is going to be a messy commute. give yourself ample time especially if you're taking the little ones to school this morning. let's go ahead and take you outside and show you what we're working with now. this paints a very daunting picture. this is a widespread view of what's happening over the state. we have a lot of shower activity all the way from bakersfield north to the tippy top of california. as we head throughout the day

today, we'll continue to see this front push onshore and it will be at its worst as we head throughout this morning so we really want to keep that in mind. look at this batch of rain. watch out for thick puddling out there. as we head throughout the next couple hours it's going to continue to be the case. it's bringing in a lot of instability so we have gusty winds to deal with in addition to the sloppy commute. you really want to travel cautiously this morning. we'll stop the clock and get a little break for the second half of the day but then another wave of moisture tonight. between 7:00 and 10:00, that impact and interrupt the giants/cardinals game. we'll dive a little deeper into that forecast. maybe some minor delays 15 minutes, nothing heavy, but i do think rain will play a factor and wind as well. 60 in fremont, 64 in redwood city.

i.e. jacket weather all day long. this is the warmest point of the day, especially in places like san francisco. rain showers just about every single day this week. as we get into the next weekend, we'll start to clear out and warm up, but temperatures are going to be cool. you'll need the jacket all week long. guys acti guys, back over to you. 4:49. new moving on to decision 2012. the final presidential debate takes place later tonight and all the talk will be on foreign policy. tracie potts shows us how the candidates are getting ready. >> reporter: there will be lots to talk about when president obama and governor romney take the stage tonight. new violence in libya, lebanon, syria and the white house denying reports of nuclear talks with iran. >> the sanctions regime that president obama has put together with israel and many nations around the world is putting pressure on iran. >> under president romney you would not have to haggle with the white house about sanctions. >> what worries me is just a

series of statements that show that he's not ready for primetime. >> reporter: a new ad highlights what the president will likely bring up tonight, governor romney's quick public reaction to the deaths in libya. >> all to score political points. that's disgraceful. >> reporter: expect governor romney to press the president on two weeks of inconsistencies about who was behind the attacks. >> exhibit a of a failed national security strategy. >> america can't lose, all right? >> reporter: governor romney took a football break from studying this weekend. president obama was at camp david. nbc's latest poll shows the race dead locked, 47-47 among likely voters. >> sitting at 47 is a good number for a challenger, not a good number for an incumbent. >> we feel good about where we are. we feel we're even or ahead in these battleground states. >> reporter: president obama had a five-point lead in that poll last month and still leads among registered voters. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> stay with nbc bay area.

welcome back, everybody, on a mon morning. a lot going on out there with the weather starting to pick up. this is a live look over oakland. some power outages to tell you about in oakland. over 7,000 customers right now

without their pg&e party -- power, i should say. pg&e assessing that. also daly city, 2400 customers without power. rich monday, about 343 and up in south san francisco there are a couple of outages affecting nearly 300 people. we will keep you posted as the day goes on. looks like this weather is going to get worse. the race is on to get pieces of that meteor that streaked across the bay area sky on wednesday. scientists say today's rain could be washing away some of these important clues into history. a woman found a piece of the meteor at her home on friday. a nasa scientist is now studying that golf ball-size piece of meteor. he says there might be more out there. the largest pieces may have fallen somewhere in sonoma. he said they could uncover some important clues into the history of our southeasterly system and more. >> it will be very interesting to study this and see what it can tell us. either about the origin of the

earth or about the origin of life on the earth. >> this is very interesting stuff. he also says if you're searching for the meteor, to look for objects with a burnt black or gray finish. >> and put them in foil. >> that's the technical way you have to do it to maintain and keep their consistency. let's check in with anthony. he is filling in for mike today. what a morning to fill in. >> come on, he must have known this was coming. >> you're doing great. >> let's start you off with the bay bridge. i want to show you what's happening because this is very important as the morning gets going. nothing going on right now but we're starting to see a few accidents around this particular area. now, this is the area there was lots of construction going on and that construction still taking place at this hour, even though it is still dark those crews like to get it done overnight. you can see right around 580 heading into the bay bridge area and really down this whole strip coming from oakland into the south bay, anywhere you're headed on 880, keep in mind there's construction on a bridge

going into oakland in that particular section so there's lots of slowdowns and keep in mind with the rain to allow a little extra time today and of course it's monday, so of course that patience might be running a little short but we'll talk about that later. >> just pour a little stronger coffee. the san diego chargers could be slapped with a major penalty. the nfl is investigating whether the team used a banned sticky substance during a recent loss to the denver broncos. the league says the chargers equipment manager was spotted on the field with the substance on hand towels. the chargers could face a fine or lose a draft pick. >> as they kasay, you do the crime, you've got to do the time. it is 4:57. we'll be right back.
