overnight in oakland. we'll have a look at all the damage coming up just ahead. and we've got heavy downpours coming down right in the heart of your morning drive. what you need to know before you head out that front door. and i'm anthony slaughter in for mike inouye this morning. we're talking about traffic delays big-time. you can see those metering lights are on. make sure those headlights are on as well. we'll detail your traffic coming up in just minutes. bone angle of the bay bridg here. a lot going on on this monday, october 22nd. this is "today in the bay." good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. today we highly recommend that you grab a jacket and pack an umbrella as you get out there. we'll give you a live look at that golden gate bridge. you can see some moisture on the roads there. expecting definitely a big-time cold front as our first storm of the season rolls right in.
6:01 am
we will have your traffic report coming up in just a matter of minutes. first off, we start things off with storm watch coverage and that means we bring in meteorologist christina loren. a very, very busy morning for her tracking all the action. good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, busy is an understatement this morning. just trying to keep up with these cells as they push onshore of the wanted to start with the good news. a lot of snowfall already. i think we'll be measuring it in feet by thursday up in tahoe above about 6500 feet. but the real story this morning is how important it is to give yourself ample time to reach your destination safely. as you can see, san francisco, almost the entire tip of the peninsula getting slammed with moderate and heavy downpours. all this moisture headed toward the bay bridge and oakland as we head through the next 15 to 20 minutes. we're still nice and dry here in the south bay but not for long. 56 minutes away from santa clara, mountain view just 43 minutes away now so give
6:02 am
yourself plenty of time. it's not just the rain we're tracking, very gusty winds, in excess of 20 miles per hour sustained in oakland right now. we have no reports of downed trees but that is certainly a possibility as we head throughout the morning hours. the front is coming through and we'll continue to track it for you. let's find out how your roads are faring this morning with anthony slaughter. >> the san mateo bridge is open this morning so it looks like things are moving along smoothly there. we are also starting to see slow going on the bay bridge toll plaza there. we'll get a look at that in just a minute. as you can see we are seeing traffic through san francisco right now moving smoothly, so no issues if you're leaving the city. in the east bay things are starting to pick up as you saw earlier at the top of our show right around the bay bridge. an accident earlier at 580 and harrison has been cleared but the big issue right now, the altamont pass really slow from livermore to dublin. no major accidents but again folks coming in and going to work and skchool this morning s we're seeing traffic pick up. in the south bay there's a car on fire 280 near the lawrence
6:03 am
expressway, so if you can avoid that area altogether. otherwise get ready for the rain and keep the umbrellas handy. despite the first real rain of the season, a bay area bridge is reopening right on schedule. we've got a live look at the san mateo bridge this morning. it was actually closed over the weekend for construction, but still some weather concerns out there for drivers as traffic is picking up. arturo santiago is live at the bridge this morning where wind and rain certainly factoring in to today's commute. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we've been able to make our way on to the san mateo bridge. we're actually at the toll station on the bridge. take a look behind me, traffic is approaching the toll lanes. the bridge has been closed all weekend long as you mentioned. it reopened earlier this morning and it didn't take long for this traffic to start building up. drivers will need to be extra cautious on the roads this morning as we just heard from christina, this is the first significant rainfall we've had in a while. that means there's plenty of time for grime and oil to build
6:04 am
up on the surface of the road. when these rains get those surfaces wet, the conditions can become extremely slippery. after that the gusty wind conditions can make driving tricky. as we heard the wind and rain will be moving in just as you're making your morning rush hour drive. so as always, the advice is to slow down, leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you, be extra alert and bring a lot of patience. if at all possible, it is a good idea to leave early so you can take your time trying to get to work or school. please be careful. live on the san mateo bridge, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >> we will have continuing coverage of the severe weather, any power outages and of course those traffic problems all morning long right here on nbc bay area. also send us your video and photos to newstips@nbcbayarea.com. follow us on twitter or like us at facebook.

here we go over at at&t park. the forecast is a cloudy one with 100% chance of cain. he will lead his troops into that world series. they have to win tonight to do that. this morning team coverage of the decisive game seven taking on st. louis. today in the bay's christie smith is live outside at&t park with something every giants fan needs to know about tonight's game but we start thing off with john henry smith who's live outthere on the field right now. john, it does not get more down to the wire than this or more exciting than game seven. you've got to love it. >> reporter: jon, i just like that 100% chance of cain loine. i wish i had thought of it, very clever. let me tell you this. the giants, when their backs are against the wall, these giants routinely time and time again have come through. of course last night they were facing their elimination game, a fifth elimination game and they

came through, beating the cardinals 6-1. if they win tonight they will tie the major league record for most elimination game wins in a postseason and of course punch their ticket to the world series. ryan vogelsong the hero last night. nine strikeouts, over seven innings of work and he got all the run support he needed in a huge second inning in which marco scutaro was the hitting hero. he had a two-out, two-run knock and he got -- they also got ones from vogelsong and from pablo sandoval. 6-1, the giants beat the cardinals. angel pagan says this team, they have just got grit. >> we don't give up. we're a tough team, man. we've got good mentality. we're hungry. like i had, we're not ready to go home. >> the same thing game four, five -- or five, six or seven meant to us, we lose or go home. now we have two teams in the same boat so it's going to be an intense game.
6:07 am
you know, you're going to see two teams go out and give it everything they have got. >> reporter: and -- whoa, a little gust of wind out here. you can have a heck of a game of slip and slide out on that tarp on the field right now but things will dry up later, i'm sure. 5:15 tonight is first pitch. matt cain going against kyle loesch for the right to go to the world series. an exciting pivotal game seven. it doesn't get any better than that. from at&t posh action i'm john henry smith, nbc bay area news. >> slip and slide, i like that. >> thank you very much, john henry. now let's check in with christie smith. she's live at at&t park with a look at the secelebration, swee torture and the sky-high ticket sales ahead of tonight's winner-take-all game. >> reporter: good morning to you. you know, it is raining out here at at&t park right now. don't know if it's going to be raining later but i doubt the giants fans would even notice, they were so excited last night. giants took a commanding lead
6:08 am
and would not let go. i heard there was a guy out here in a full body panda suit, fist bumping other giants fans. that was just the mood out here celebrating the incredible 6-1 win over the cardinals forcing game seven in the national league championship. fans excited about pitcher ryan v vogelsong. inside and outside at&t park the excitement was electric. fans say this is what the team does best. they come back when their backs are against the wall. >> go, giants! >> i'm totally pumped. i wore my lucky hat and lucky pair of pants. >> and it worked. >> it worked. >> torture. again, pure torture. >> reporter: now, for tonight's game there are still tickets up for grabs on stubhub starting at about $132 for standing room only. it's about ten grand to get up close if you can swing it. there's even a category on stubhub for world series tickets if it goes that far, but these
6:09 am
tickets are really high. i also checked craigslist and people offering trades to get their hands on them. one guy saying, hey, i'll fix your car if you can give me some tickets. another guy saying i'll give you an ipad if you can get me some tickets. people just want to get in any way they can. i have to tell you, it is still raining out here. it's going to be -- it is wet. as someone mentioned earlier, the other reporter, it is a slip and slide situation but fans are pumped just waiting for game seven. that is the latest from here. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we'll pay you tuesday for some tickets today. christie, thank you very much. for continuing coverage of the giants, head over to our website, nbcbayarea.com. our home page, all kinds of good stories or just search the cove for everything we have to offer on the g-men. do it tonight, make the world series. also new this morning, lance armstrong will be stripped of all seven of his tour de france

6:18 am
things begin to happen. if romney does say that, let me know. i'll be watching the giants. >> i'll tweet it to you. that will be a topic back and forth tonight. keeping our eye on the forecast luckily is meteorologist christina loren. >> speaking of the giants, let's go ahead and start. we want to show you the field this morning before our heroes take on at&t park later on today. they have got the tarp out for good reason. heavy downpours coming down over san francisco and the greater bay area as we speak. that's not going to keep our boys down. i think if we do see any showers around the park tonight, it's going to be around 7:00 to 9:00. we'll take a closer look in just a minute. we want to start with your live doppler. look at this batch of rain getting ready to slam the peninsula. 280, count on a major delay as we get through the next 15 to 20 minutes. you're now about 57 minutes away in san jose from this steady batch of rain.

as we get throughout the morning hours, it looks like the rush hour will be the most severe, between 7:00 and 10:00 today, especially south of the golden gate bridge. also tracking this area of light to moderate showers headed toward lafayette as we get into the next 25 minutes. so slick conditions in the east bay as well, and you can imagine there will be a ripple effect. in addition to the very heavy rain we have, gusty winds south-southeast at 22 miles per hour. that's your sustained speed. we're going to see these winds continue to pick up as the front moves onshore. we're still on the warm side of that front after it passes at 1:00 p.m. our temperatures are going to drop and we'll only make it to the upper 50s in san jose, so you will need that jacket and the umbrella as well. you might have to dig for it this morning. now here's where it gets interesting. we stop the clock on your futurecast. close to game time, showers lurking around the yard at 7:00 p.m. i think if we see anything, it would be a light rain delay, maybewar maybe upwards of 15 minutes but
