showers still lighting up the radar and more on the way. we've got your full forecast coming up. and that rain going to affect your morning drive. we'll tell you where there are reports of flooding and an earlier accident for oakland coming up. and the rain may have stopped in san francisco as we give you a live look at the palace of fine arts, but the good vibrations still flowing out there. the g-membership headin heading series. they do it tomorrow. this is "today in the bay." and it is a good day. >> it is. >> those giants doing their thing. it is 5:00, good morning. always a pleasure to have you along with us, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we'll get to the coverage of the giants big win but first more showers in today's forecast. even thunderstorms could be on the way. >> yeah, we're actually expecting some. tuesday morning, world series bound san francisco giants. we've got showers on the radar this morning, so even though you
5:01 am
might be wiping the sleep out of your eyes as you enjoyed that game last night, give yourself ample time to reach your destination safely. we had a lot of rain come through overnight and you'll likely find slick conditions. from san jose to morgan hill watch out for slick conditions on 101. we have more rain headed our way as we head through probably 5:00 p.m. to about midnight tonight. and then we'll see another wave of moisture come through tomorrow morning and get rid of these showers, at least for a little while. but in the meantime we have mountain thunderstorms in the works for today. we want to detail that for you. we'll let you know how much your city accumulated so far and how much more we're expecting of the we'll also take a peek at five tornado reports yesterday in northern california. so there's a lot to talk about when it comes to your full forecast. 5:01. mike, when there's rain objecn radar, it's a slow go. >> luckily we have rain in the sierra, traffic and chain control because of that for i-80
5:02 am
so keep that in mind. check the web for the updates as well. look over here toward foster city and peninsula side of highway 92, the san mateo bridge which had construction, it's open, no problem for the flow this morning. on the other side on the toll plaza side, the hayward side of the bay, we're looking at a nice, easy drive as well. 880 farther north, we see a smooth approach to the maze, but northbound past the earlier accident and flooding at park, all incidents are clear now, guys. back to you. we can tell the weather not the only thing the bay area buzzing about right now. you may have heard there's a new national league champion in town. >> and the giants have won the pennant! 9-0 the final in game seven. >> it's awesome to see, let the champagne and good vibrations flow following a stunning comeback, rolling off three straight victories to advance to their second world series in just three years, the giants
5:03 am
took it. until last night they had never won a game seven. the party was a brief one, though. they head right back to work tomorrow night. game one of the world series is at at&t park hosting the american league champion detroit tigers. >> and with that smell of champagne still in the air i'm sure, christie smith is live with all the fan reaction to last night's monumental victory. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. you know, it ended in the pouring rain but the fans didn't care, i didn't care. i stayed up way too late watching every single inning of this game and, boy, was it worth it. at&t park rather quiet right now. we saw one or two fans coming by to snap a quick picture but i wanted to show you the headline from the "san francisco chronicle." wow! what a giant win and, boy, was it. the giants just never stop playing. right after that stunning 9-0 win over st. louis, fans swarmed
5:04 am
the giants dugout store to buy the limited number of hats and t-shirts that went on sale right after the win became official. 43,000 fans packed into at&t park. those that didn't even have tickets came anyway just to soak up their win bringing their superstitions, good luck, whatever they could. >> we've got to buy the same beer, we've got to wear the same socks, we've got to wear the same clothes, everything. >> lets go, giants. >> came across country from florida just to get to game six an game seven. i'm a season ticket holder. i'm here for the world series, baby. >> reporter: now, as we've done in this before, we've been checking stubhub for you for tickets and what is up there posted this morning, world series game one tickets for the giants/detroit game. well, standing room only now starts at $429.
5:05 am
reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, christie. if you want to look for a hero in this series, take a look at marco scutaro. >> he had a good one. he bounced back from that slight injury and named mvp of that series last night. batted .500, had 14 hits over seven games. is he a great pickup or what? oh, yeah, he got the final out of the night. this is all amazing considering this right there, took that hard hit in game two. he bounced right back. the guy's a warrior. many thought that would end this series but he came in and continued to work the imagimagi >> game one of the world series once again tomorrow night at at&t park. game time 5:00. barry zito will pitch for the giants. the third and final presidential debate now in the history books and the candidates are back on that campaign trail
5:06 am
as they make that final push for election day which is two weeks away. the focus last night was on foreign policy and produced a few zingars. marla tellez has in insight from a professor. >> joining me is dr. tim cottrell. your specialty of course is political science. let's start with the overall take of this debate, the feel of the debate. one take is that president obama controlled this debate much like mitt romney controlled the first one. is that a fair assessment? >> i think the president feels really good about his performance in the debate. it was much less contentious than in the town hall. it was much more civilized last night. i think the president was probably very satisfied with his performance and most reports i've seen suggest that he feels like he's the winner of that debate last night. >> in your opinion, do you think that's fair? >> i do think that he did what he needed to do.
5:07 am
that he seemed in command. usually the president has a home court advantage when it comes to foreign policy, and i think that he felt much more comfortable than he did in the first debate. he felt very comfortable talking with what he's done. mitt romney has no record on foreign policy since he's not been the president so that gives the president a natural advantage and i think it made him feel more comfortable and helped set the tone. >> there are definitely a few moments getting quite a bit of play today in the media. let's talk about some of the highlights. one of those happened when president obama essentially mocked romney's suggestion that russia is the greatest threat to the u.s. >> governor romney, i'm glad that you recognize al qaeda is a threat because a few months ago when you were asked what's the biggest threat facing america, you said russia. not al qaeda, you said russia. and the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the cold war has been over for 20 years. >> that reference to the 1980s, that comment there, do you think that actually may have hurt
5:08 am
obama? >> i'm not sure that independent voters find that level of sarcasm to be presidential. i think obama supporters probably like that line and social media they would be talking about that as sort of a zinger of the evening. but i'm not sure that independent voters need that level of sarcasm. >> we will see. the election just two weeks away. thank you for your time this morning. we're going to continue to talk to you throughout the morning. laura. >> thank you very much, marla. it is 5:08. apple is getting ready for another big announcement a month after its last big one. scott mcgrew joins us live in downtown san jose with the details this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you're absolutely right, laura, it has been about a month since the last one. that would be iphone 5. if you're only talking about ipads, and we are talking about ipads today, then you're looking at something like 200 plus days since the last ipad, in ipad 3. what we expect today at the
5:09 am
california theater here in san jose is an ipad mini. now, one of the crews out here said oh, look, you have the ipad large. i said yeah, i guess that's what we're going to call it from here on out. the big question is not what it's going to introduce, it's how much it's going to cost. they're trying to compete, apple is, with amazon.com which sells that seven-inch kindle essentially at a loss. amazon knows it can get enough kindles out there, it can start charging for all that content. apple doesn't tend to sell things at losses. in fact they get about a 33% return on every ipad they sell. so the exciting thing at 10:00 a.m. this morning out here at the california theater in san jose won't be what will they introduce, it will be the ipad mini, it will be how much does it cost. back to you. >> have they ever done an event there? >> reporter: they have. in fact my favorite event here was when they introduced the ipod with the u2 colors because
5:10 am
bono game and played on the stake. it was pretty cool to have your on concert. >> i wish they were playing today. we'll wait and see. 5:10. meteorologist christina loren telling us more showers. a little letup and then it comes back, right? >> yeah, we've got more in the works. good morning to you. i want to start with some severe weather that came through not too far from where we live right here in the bay area. butte county, yuba county, you may be familiar. look at this, we had five tornado reports yesterday. the national weather service has to investigate this area. we've got a slight chance of some mountain thunderstorms here in the bay area later on today. the chance for tornados is not really a factor for us. we're not going to rule it out entirely. whenever you get these strong thunderstorms it's really hard to dictate where they will head.
5:11 am
i'm not leaving this office today until 2:00 p.m. our up settled pattern continues here. spotty showers this morning, mostly to the south. we'll see a cool, cloudy afternoon. thunderstorms, the best chance over the north bay mountains. we have a fair chance over the south bay mountains and the east bay hills as well. we'll be watching that for you mostly between 11:00 and 5:00, so stick with us today. as we get through tomorrow, a little bit of shower activity in the morning and then we'll get some sunshine. the sun comes back out tomorrow. we'll tell you when coming up. 5:11. let's check on your morning drive. >> but the sun will come out tomorrow. thank you, annie. we are looking over to the south bay. that's christina over there. this is the traffic 101 north from 680. i want to show you 280 on the maps. we're going to travel north on 280 towards 10th where there's an accident reported. single car involved reportedly hit the wall. a lot of times this is a spinout

giants' spirits. they completed their amazing comeback against the cardinals last night in the pouring rain and now, oh, yes, celebrated. they're headed to the world series. game one tomorrow night in san francisco. >> clearly last night the giants proving that not only surviving in the rain, they thrive in the rain. game three tomorrow, what's that forecast going to look like? >> i think we're going to pound, pound detroit as we head through tomorrow but you want the weather. i think we're going to see a little bit of rain, but nothing heavy. i think if anything maybe a 15-minute delay at best. nothing that could rain out that game. first game of the world series of course right here on nbc bay area, your proud broadcast home of the san francisco giants. exclusive coverage all week long as we head through this week and next week as well. nice clear conditions from high atop san bruno. we are expecting that fog to settle in. it's going to be a cool, cloudy day with temperatures only climbing an additional 5 to 8 degrees from where they are

boex, anywhere south of san jose you're likely to get wet roads. the pavement is starting to dry out and that's better news. your drive here north 280 as you're passing by 7th, one of your san jose state exits, there is an accident still reported at the off-ramp but not really blocking the lanes. watching for activity and updates. 280, 880, 87 all looking pretty good as far as those speeds go. first we'll take you to the peninsula. here's north 101 coming past university. we're looking at the sheen off of the roadway and you see it when the cars are not there off of the streetlights. still wet a little bit here for 101 but so far speeds are maintaining all the way up into san francisco. on the other side of the bay, 880 past fremont and the truck scales, we have a nice flow of traffic at the truck scales themself. we're moving nicely all the way through union city and fremont as well. we'll look at the map as well. as we move up toward the maze, a smooth flow off the caldecott tunnel and also we'll look to

5:21 am
important issue and one that's the responsibility of the california highway patrol. this morning an eye-opening investigation. bus drivers reporting problems ignored by the chp. chief investigator tony kovaleski has discovered the breakdown and joins us with the details. >> reporter: here's the issue. two veteran bus drivers were concerned with buses that were breaking down and not getting fixed. they risked their paychecks and their careers. now we want to know why the chp didn't hear their calls for help. >> was there an accident or something? >> no, broke down. >> we had one day where we had six to seven breakdowns in one morning shift. >> reporter: you can hear the frustration in his voice. >> buses that wouldn't work? >> buses that would not work. >> my bus leaks massive, and the brakes are going out right now. and every time i take it in for

5:23 am
specific to one person's complaint? >> there were several bus drivers. >> not that i'm aware of. >> reporter: ultimately that's the issue, why has the california highway patrol ignored the concerns of veteran school bus drivers. durham bus services continues to point to the fact that it has passed its most recent inspections with the chp. tonight at 11:00, our nbc bay area investigation will take you inside the conflict, raising critical questions about the performance of the california highway patrol. in the newsroom, i'm tony kovaleski, nbc bay area news. >> all right, tony, thank you very much. we'll be right back after this. christina. >> hey, good morning to you. santa rosa yesterday picked up over an inch of rain. no, we are not even close to being finished just yet with the showery pattern. we'll get a few dry days and then more rain on the way for next week. so i wanted to talk about some of the big winners. santa rosa over an inch, almost three-quarters of an inch in oakland, almost half an inch in san francisco. we picked up half an inch in walnut creek. san jose, almost 0.10 of an inch. we didn't do as well but that's because we are surrounded by mountains. 300 days of sunshine right here in san jose. watch out for slick conditions on 101 between san jose and morgan hill. gilroy starting to get a little bit of a break. we'll take you through your full forecast in just a few moments. that seven-day is ready to go and we do have a chance for thunderstorms. first we'll check your drive with mike. >> christina just gave you that warning for the south bay but right now we're cross get pay on 92. here's the flat section in the

distance. the high rise for the san mateo bridge. we'll look at the peninsula side and see folks coming off of the crest there from the foster city view of highway 92, the san mateo bridge. note for the bay bridge as well as the san mateo bridge watch those higher winds, maybe gusty conditions. keep that in mind, the potential there. the south bay, the volume picks up, the rain farther south than san jose or farther south in san jose. a live look at the camera shows you the volume really starting to kick in right at 680. back to you. just in case you had to go to bed and you missed it, let us be the first to tell you the giants winning. the team focusing on that real prize. >> we need to enjoy this but still have some work to do. >> yes, they do. the team needs to win one more series before being called world champions. it's going to be a tough one against the detroit tigers. game one is tomorrow night at at&t park. >> oh, yes, time to get it on. today in the bay's christie smith is live in san francisco
5:33 am
right now where the giants, get a load of this, the giants giving away free tickets to the world series. christie, a very good morning with that news. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, jon. you know, that win was absolutely stunning. not just a win, but a shutout. i have to say i stayed up way too late watching the whole thing. but apparently one of the last tweets that the giants sent out last night was information saying that they would be giving away two free tickets to the world series. that information coming out sometime around 9:00 this morning. so you'll want to keep an eye on their twitter page. at&t park rather quiet this morning. all of the celebrations over. but i wanted to show you the kinds of things that we're finding out here this morning. you mentioned champagne. well, we are finding the celebratory corks all over the sidewalk this morning. of course champagne showers all around after the giants won it last night. fans swarmed the giants dugout to buy the limited number of hats and t-shirts that went on
5:34 am
sale after they became the national league champs, shutting down st. louis. of course next up, detroit. even fans who didn't even have tickets to get inside just came to soak up the win outside. it was incredible. >> it's awesome. >> i love it! >> pure joy. pure joy. i knew it! it's amazing! the best feeling ever. >> reporter: as we've done before in these games, we've been checking out stubhub, the ticket reseller for you. and right now for the world series game one, standing room only tickets starting at $429. so, jon and laura, i just wanted to mention that my birthday is coming up this month so if you were looking for something to get me, i would certainly accept those from you. >> but you'll be going by yourself. >> we have enough for one ticket. >> you're the girl. >> all right, christie, thank you very much. we'll check back with you later on. time to mark your calendars.
5:35 am
here's how it shakes out for the world series schedule. games one and two are wednesday and thursday at at&t park. then the series moves to detroit for games three an four saturday and sunday. if needed, game five would be in detroit on monday. if sixth and seventh games are needed, they'll come back to at&t park next wednesday and thursday. go g-men. all right, apple making a big announcement again today. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is live in san jose. scott, didn't apple just have an ipad announcement a few months ago? >> reporter: yeah, it did, jon. that was the ipad 3. it was about 225 days ago. apple has really begun to speed this process up. if you're thinking to yourself wasn't there one just a couple of weeks ago, the iphone 5. today what we'll hear about in the california theater in san jose, we suspect, is an ipad mini. and this will be historic in the sense that this will be the
5:36 am
first product that steve jobs did not really have his hands on. in fact he rather famously thought a smaller tablet was a bad idea. but amazon proved that wrong. amazon has sold tons of those kindle ebook readers and the kindle fire in fact is the best-selling product amazon sells period. apple clearly needs to compete. so the big question, jon, will not be do they introduce the ipad mini, that's what they'll introduce at 10:00 a.m. this morning, it's the cost. will it compete well with the amazon kindle. will apple be willing to get rid of some of that profit to compete on the smaller tablet level. >> thank you very much, scott. new this morning, a los gatos mother is fighting to keep her daughters in school after the district ordered her to keep them away. the mother says the girls are being kicked out because they suffer from severe nut allergies, but the district says the decision had nothing to do with that. arturo santiago spoke to the
5:37 am
family this morning and he joins us live from los gatos this morning. good morning, arturo. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the mother of these two little girls tried to meet with the school superintendent yesterday. she said the superintendent would not meet with her. she does know that police officers have been told by the district to be here at the school and not allow edwards and her daughters onto campus. well, the mother knows this, but she is still going to try to take her daughters to school. now, her daughters are 9-year-old ella and 7-year-old sara. they have severe nut allergies. contact with just trace amounts of nuts could be life-threatening. their mother says the school would not provide a classroom environment that's safe for her daughters and they have been told that the girls are not allowed to go to the school anymore, basically kicking them out. edwards calls it discrimination. the school district asserts that the edwards don't live at the address in los gatos that they used to enroll an do not belong at the elementary school. >> really hoping that it's not something that's going to scare
5:38 am
the girls. i have all of my residency paperwork action everything that we brought to the district originally to sign the girls up for school, we will have. by law the girls are entitled to go to school in their district so there should be no reason for us not to be allowed on campus. >> reporter: now, when it comes to nut allergies, each school district does have its own policy. they are not regulated by the state. but again, edwards is expecting there to be police resistance when they arrive at van meter elementary later on this morning. school will start sometime around 8:00. we will be here to see what happens. live in los gatos, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." 5:38. time to check back in with meteorologist christina loren. you have been busy in that weather department. so what's the latest, young lady. >> well, you don't need the umbrella so much today. you'll need that jacket certainly. and then by this afternoon, we could be talking about mountain thunderstorms. so keep that in your back pocket for now. 48 degrees in novato, 54 in
5:39 am

be a lot of similarity between how he would approach things like iran and syria, because the president has really tried to score some points there and say what would you do short of going to war that would be different than what we're already doing? and the president tried to make the point that there's not that much distinction there and that really i have the experience and so i have the edge there. if there's no other difference, then i should have the edge on this issue. >> one particular moment making headlines came when governor romney talked about the size of the navy and no surprise president obama had a comeback. here's a look at the exchange. >> our navy is -- excuse me, our navy is smaller now than any time since 1917. >> you mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed. >> that's all over twitter and facebook today. do you think that sarcasm from

the president is going to win over votes? >> that's a good question. i think that the president supporters probably enjoyed that line and thought that it's a good way to basically debunk that point and suggest that, you know, there's a reason that we maybe have fewer ships, that we're focused on other areas of our military strength. again, independent voters, it's an open question whether they will like that level of sarcasm and making light of that answer. i think that strategy may be -- might back fire. there was another incident where he was a little sarcastic and we'll see if that plays well to the voters. >> we were talking off camera and you think romney needed to win all three debates. do you think he did that? >> well, the president is the incumbent so he's the front runner. so i felt like romney really needed to win three in a row and unlike the giants, i'm not sure that he actually did that. it remains to be seen whether or not that last debate will be seen as a flat performance. i think probably the polls in the next few days will suggest that the president bounced back a little bit. >> okay, professor, thanks so

5:48 am
last night around 5:30, that's where a jack-knifed big rig blocked that one and only lane and tied up traffic so bad that even responders couldn't get to that truck. they eventually had to come the wrong way up the freeway to get that truck out of there, which took, again, as much as nine hours one family said they were stranded. we talked to another woman who had her 80-year-old mother in the car and sat there five hours. another woman said she called chp after sitting there four hours and even they were surprised that that car was still stuck in traffic. so it was just a huge mess. now they're still holding traffic on both the westbound and eastbound side. there's still a lot of trucks and cars that were stuck off on the shoulder. the problem was when that accident happened there were no chain controls so everyone got up into the sierra. the accident happened, they shut the roadway down. it snowed like mad last night and everyone became stuck with no chains on. so you get the idea of what a mess it is. if you're coming to the sierra, just know what you're getting into. eastbound not a big issue but westbound a very volatile side of the freeway until they get
