6:01 am
good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelly. good morning, everybody. today we are feeling the big chill. our first big cold front of the year. take a look at san francisco where christina loren is telling us there is more rain on the way. she's here following the developing weather story live this morning on what is heading our way. good morning, christina. >> good morning to you. yeah, you want to give yourself plenty of time. even though we don't have a lot of rain on the radar, slick conditions on the rainfall that came through overnight. look at some of these totals, very impressive for just 24 hours. over an inch of rain in santa rosa. almost three-quarters of an inch in oakland. walnut creek picked up almost half of appen inch. right now the last batch is situated right over gilroy so take it easy. also streaming towards 152, the pacheco pass.
6:02 am
travel cautiously in that neck of the woods. throughout the morning we'll see the showers clear. by the afternoon we accumulate the daytime heat and the focus shifts to the potential for mountain thunderstorms. as we wake up tomorrow morning, a few more showers, a slick commute and then that sun will break through the clouds. we're going to get a nice afternoon. so there is relief on the way when it comes to these showers. 64 in livermore. it's going to be cool out there. plenty of 60s over the greater bay area. 63 in napa, 61 in oakland and it's only going to be about 59 degrees in san francisco. so with rain on the radar, you can count on a slick commute. mike is also tracking several things that could slow you down. good morning to you. >> good morning. in fact i've been watching this screen that you're watching over on your right-hand side. you see somebody getting back in the tow truck all the way over on the right. it is blocking at least part of your right lane so you get over towards your left two lanes just past the toll plaza. this is westbound 92. the san mateo bridge in your commute direction. a little slowing on that bridge on the hayward side. also reported another incident on the dumbarton bridge approaching the high rise also
6:03 am
westbound. meanwhile on the peninsula side, we're looking at another incident. this is 101 with a smooth drive through palo alto but farther north at marsh, reports of an accident that may be in lanes. chp still heading out to the southbound side. sundays like everything is off on the center divide. another live look outside. we'll show you the bay bridge. look at all those cash lanes packing up. it's just after 6:00. we'll see an early start to the backup here because it is traffic tuesday where we see a heavier flow of volume of traffic all around the bay. the south bay is showing the sleg for 101 north of 680 between fully and 880. 101 has the slow stretch. 87 slowing down and we're watching 85 for those slow speed drivers as well because of the volume there as well. back to you. 6:03. this morning the giants are waking up winners after a blowout game that sealed their shot at the world series. >> and the giants have won the pennant! 9-0 the final in game seven. >> a lot to celebrate for the g-men.
6:04 am
high-stakes game won after plenty of high drama as the giants crushed the cardinals 9-0. it was a long and rainy road to become world series contenders. players say they're going to take the win no matter the weather. >> it's been amazing. san francisco, all the fans out here, pouring down rain and we're all loving it. >> it's unbelievable. what else can you say? i mean we're down again and we come back and win. unbelievable. >> fittingly enough, the win came out in front of a packed crowd at at&t park. for more on fans' reactions and how you can score tickets, let's turn to nbc bay area's christie smith live at the ballpark this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. you know, you couldn't even write this kind of ending because it wouldn't sound real. the giants are behind in the series and they come back to win it 9-0 in the pouring rain in front of a huge crowd, big celebration out here last night at at&t park. but before it all ended, the
6:05 am
giants send out one final tweet last night saying that they would be giving away two world series tickets. that you would want to check back at their twitter page sometime around 9:00 this morning. the fans went straight for the dugout store after that stunning win over st. louis. the giants win the national league pennant last night. fans bought the limited number of hats and t-shirts that went on sale right after the game. about 43,000 fans packed in and watched st. louis remain scoreless. rain didn't slow anyone down inside the park or outside. the 2010 world series champions are back in it again. >> it's awesome. >> i love it! >> pure joy. pure joy. i knew it! it's amazing, the best feeling ever. >> next up, of course, the detroit tigers. game one at at&t park tomorrow night. i checked stubhub for you. they have standing room only

tickets starting at about $429. before we go back here live, i wanted to show you the headline of the "san francisco chronicle" this morning. wow! what a giant win. there's a photo of pablo sandoval hugging a teammate, it kind of illustrates exactly how excited the team and the fans were. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the pay." >> you know, christie, i have a feeling some of those fans are still out there partying as we speak. as for the mvp of that series, that honor goes to the player who happened to lock down the giants' final out. >> that should end it. and who else, scutaro. >> that is it. with two outs in the ninth, marco scutaro catches that pop-up to clench the giants second world series in three years. he makes the final out on a ball hit by matt holliday. the same guy that blasted him at
6:07 am
second base earlier in the series. it doesn't matter now. he is the mvp and the giants are going to the world series and game one starts tomorrow at at&t park. game time set for 5:07. if you want to set your watch, that's in the evening. that's against the detroit tigers. game two is on thursday. also at at&t park. and of course for your continuing coverage of all things g-men, just check out nbcbayarea.com. the giants will be all over. a lot of orange, a lot of black, a lot of giants. new this morning, apple getting ready for yet another announcement, the second in just a month. but is the hype surrounding the new apple gadget starting to fade? business and tech reporter scott mcgrew joins us live outside the california theater in san jose this morning. scott, today's announcement aimed at the only serious competition that apple is said to have in the tablet game? >> reporter: that's right, exactly. against amazon and the smaller tablets. you were mentioning the hype. i'll willing to show you behind the scenes if you want to,
6:08 am
laura. this is what it looks like as lots of different crews are getting ready to cover this apple announcement that will come at 10:00 a.m. our time. so the hype certainly still paying off for apple, even though, what was it, a couple of weeks ago we looked at the iphone 5 and only a couple of months ago we were talking about ipad 3. in this case we're talking about, we suspect, the ipad mini. the only real question here is how much is it going to cost and when will it be available? we know they're already being produced overseas in china, so it could be very soon. laura, the big question on the cost is apple is trying to compete with amazon, which essentially sells its kindle at a loss. is apple willing to do the same? we suspect not. we suspect this is going to be significantly more expensive than the kindle fire. >> that will be interesting to see, to hear that price point. >> absolutely. that will make a big difference. steve jobs didn't want the smaller one but with so many companies doing it, you've got
6:09 am
to go that way. christina loren is here forecasting our weather on this tuesday. a little more rain, it's going to be chilly too, huh? >> yeah, a little bit of rain and the cold weather, windy weather as well will take effect as we head throughout this afternoon. i wanted to point out where we still have lirngering showers o the radar. for the most part we are out of the woods for the next few hours. all of that rain is headed towards 152 east so keep that in mind if you're traveling that way. 64 degrees inland, 59 at the coast. your seven-day outlook and some amazing video of a tornado that touched down near yuba city yesterday coming up. we want to first check your drive with mike. >> as you were telling folks, south of san jose all that rain coming down. let me show you what we see on our maps. first of all, this is better news but not unexpected. we see that first burst of traffic kick in, this is 101 northbound. it calms down and then really starts to build from capital up toward that scene in the next
6:10 am
ten minutes. before 6:25 we're likely to see much slowing there. we're seeing monterey highway as well as highway 87 seeing a lot of slowing, a lot of traffic coming off of highway 85. we've seen speeds dip down into the 50s between 87 and highway 17. and then farther south let's overlay the rain data christina showed you, those systems coming through the area. definitely we'll have wet pavement and scattered accidents off the roadway, but 101 has been tough over morgan hill and san jose over the course of the last few minutes. back to you. big problem in southern california as we continue to cover breaking news. up to ten big rigs crash in a truck bypass tunnel there. this is a live look at interstate five in the new hall pass area just north of los angeles. you can see they are barely letting some lanes open now as traffic is starting to resume there. but firefighters still on the scene. as we mentioned, up to ten big rigs involved. also one that was carrying a load of cars out there on the scene. they're saying that rain may
6:11 am
have been a factor in this crash. it actually spilled diesel all over the roadway there, so they have had quite a feat in trying to clean that one up. the number of injuries unclear at the moment but we continue to keep tabs on this in southern california for you. the time now 6:11. coming up, that final face-off in florida. >> our navy is smaller now than any time since 1917. >> well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets. >> yeah, there's a new buzz word out there that starts with a b and beats out binders and big bird. plus expert analysis on which candidate came out on top. let's take a live look outside. a live look at hp pavilion in downtown san jose. a lot more ahead on this busy tuesday morning. stick around, 6:11. welcome back, everyone. 6:13. if you're just waking up with us, here's a quick check of the day's top stories. maybe this kept you up late celebrating of the the giants are heading to the world series after beating the st. louis cardinals in a shutout last night. game one of the world series is tomorrow here against the detroit tigers. facebook all set to report earnings this morning after the closing bell and yahoo! reporting better than expected earnings for the third quarter. apple set to make another major announcement this morning. the company expected to unveil a smaller ipad at the california theater in san jose. we'll have live reports. now we get to decision 2012 and that race for the white house. >> we can't kill our way out of this mess. >> strong, steady leadership, not wrong and reckless leadership. >> attacking me is not an agenda. >> the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back. >> it's essential for a president to show strength. >> this the final face-to-face.
6:15 am
reviews just pouring in on the debate that focused mainly on foreign policy. during that debate both nominees sharing the very same goals. although they did disagree on exactly how to get there. both certainly differed in their tone. the debate was the president's most aggressive while challenger mitt romney a little more subdued. the president defending his record as romney makes his point. america appears weaker than it was four years ago. >> i congratulate him on taking out osama bin laden and going after the leadership in al qaeda, but we can't kill our way out of this mess. >> governor romney, i'm glad that you recognize that al qaeda is a threat, because a few months ago when you were asked what's the biggest geo-political threat facing america, you said russia. not al qaeda. >> checking the numbers, president obama and mitt romney went into that third and final debate tied in the national polls so the question remains who came out on top. marla tellez is in the studio
6:16 am
this morning and she sits down for some expert analysis. good morning. >> jon, good morning. that expert is dr. jim cottrell, political science professor. who do you think came out on top? >> i think obama probably feels pretty confident about his performance. you know, before the first debate he had a lead in the polls and he was projected as the front runner, and after the first debate he had a poor performance and it really hurt him. i think romney had some momentum. but i think in the last debate, obama came out very strong and probably over the next couple of weeks we'll see that play out in the polls and he may get a little bit of a bounce. we'll have to see. >> there are always some highlights, some zingers, a few mistakes. do you think one candidate had more than the other? >> obama certainly had a few zingers and came off with the bayonets line and hit with the 1980s want their foreign policy back. but romney made a few claims like talking about the $1
6:17 am
trillion cuts to the defense, which is not entirely accurate. that's part of the sequestration process that was a bipartisan agreement that congress passed that over eight years they'll cut that. only half of that is defense and that's probably not going to take place because congress is going to put something else in place before the end of the year. >> fact checkers are having a field day with this one. governor romney certainly saw a boost after the first presidential debate. do you think the tables are turned after last night's performance? >> if i had to guess, and i'm not good at predictions, i would have to say that probably the president will get a little bit of a bounce. nate silver does projections every day and his model suggested the president had an 80% chance before the first debate of winning and it fell to 65% after the first debate. i think that's probably going to move back up to maybe 75%. but we'll have to see. time will tell. >> okay, professor, thanks so much for your time. laura, i know you have a look at some of the memorable moments from last night. >> exactly, you mentioned them with jim a little bit. in the past debates, it's been
6:18 am
big bird and binders. this time around the other big catch phrase, another b word, bayonets. >> governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed. >> that was president obama's response to a claim by mitt romney that the navy is smaller now than any other time since 1917. the bayonets zinger blue up on twitter. #horses and bayo nets were blowing up. the site saw more than 100,000 tweets per minute just linked to that jab. overnight it went to the top of google's top five rising searches list right ahead of syria and drones. >> a lot of fun, a lot of gamesmanship. what really counts, november 6th. let's get that vote going. 6:18. christina loren back to talk weather and another busy day for you. >> yeah, you know, winter-like conditions already. it feels like we just started
6:19 am
fall. i want to start with some phenomenal video. this is only about 150 miles away from san jose. a tornado near yuba city, 40 miles north of sacramento. it's from the same cold front that came through the bay area and overall let's take it to the graphics. we had five reports. now, the national weather service has to go out and survey the damage and confirm whether or not we had five tornados touch down. i think a couple of those will just come out as funnel clouds. however, very, very scary when you consider only 150 miles away and we have a chance for strong storms to fire off over our local mountains this afternoon. we're not expecting tornados, but we're not going to rule out the chance for some very strong, severe cells to potentially develop, especially when you consider we just had that happen not too far away from us yesterday. so we'll be monitoring that in the stormcenter all day today. i'm not leaving this building until i can hand off to the chief like a torch. 48 degrees in novato, 46 in

sonoma, good morning to you. napa 50 degrees. it's cold out there, grab your jacket. we're not going to see all that much of a climb when it comes to your numbers today. in the 60s all across the bay area except for san francisco, i've taken you down to 59 degrees. that's right, the 50s back in the city. this is what we're watching right now. this is the last batch of rain pushing through gilroy, pushing over 152. travel cautiously there. after this thing passes through, we'll see a pretty nice day today. it will be cool and cloudy. we'll get those mountain thunderstorms later on this afternoon. by tomorrow, quiet weather returns as we go to the second half of the day. so you're going to get that sunshine as we head through the second half of your wednesday. we stop the clock on your futurecast at 8:00 p.m. you can see here getting some of that moisture over the north bay. we stop again for you right at 1:00 a.m. an you have showers in the east bay. count on another slick commute tomorrow morning. highs today warranting a jacket. 61 in livermore, 64 in redwood

commute kicking in for that commute direction out of pleasanton into sunol. the slicker conditions might still be present at those off-ramps so keep that in mind. farther south in the south bay, san jose shows that build for the traffic. it will kick in again just before 6:25 and it is just as you approach all the way past 680 up towards 880. 87, 85, also starting to slow down as well. farther up the peninsula, 101 through palo alto with a smooth drive heading north past the exit. then coming across that san mateo bridge earlier issue blocking the right lane. that has now cleared obviously and a smooth drive, but the volume is picking up here. the dumbarton bridge also cleared of that earlier incident. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:22 right now. coming up, how's this for an unusual evolution of an athlete. from warriors reject to national sensation and now how about supermodel, cover boy. we'll let you see how jeremy lin

another wave of moisture will come through tonight into tomorrow morning. you can see that front pushing to the south and mostly cloudy conditions all along the greater bay area. so as you can see here, zoom in for you the last batch of rain finally headed south. if you are headed towards central california, you want to travel very cautiously over 152 east. at least for the next 15 to 20 minutes this thing is racing out of the area as we speak. so today works out like this. it's going to be cool enough for a jacket all day long. 64 degrees in livermore, 59 degrees in san francisco. these temperatures will climb. that sun will be back out by tomorrow afternoon. we'll talk all about our next rain event because that's in the forecast as well. your weekend plans, you start to think of them right about now so we'll get to the forecast coming up. first you've got to work for the weekend and mike is here to help you get there. >> looking over to the bay bridge the backup is there. the incline itself on the map shows you the red slowdown off the berkeley curve.

6:42 am
i've never written a fan letter before, but you've done what i thought was impossible: you made good-for-you, gluten-free cereals in a whole bunch of yummy flavors. cinnamon chex and honey nut chex are two of our favorites. when my husband rob found the chocolate one, we were in cereal heaven. the only problem is, with so many great flavors
6:43 am
you're making it very hard to choose. so thanks. from your fans, the mcgregor family. 'cause we love chex. [ male announcer ] love chex? connect with us on facebook. it's been amazing. san francisco, all the fans out here, pouring down rain and we're all loving it. >> it's unbelievable. what else can you say? i mean we're down again and we come back and win. i mean unbelievable. >> yes, it was. it was wet, it was wild and it was right down to the wire. this morning the giants, the g-men, getting close to being on top of the world. they are world series bound. now, the giants, they have only one day to celebrate that big win before tomorrow's game one of the world series and this one
6:44 am
was a classic. they blew it out. just made it hammer time. 9-0 was the final against st. louis. a team that initially led that series 3-1. of course the question is how are you going to get tickets if you haven't already done so? that is a very good question. and we have a small insight and a little bit of an answer to that. let's check in with christie smith live outside of at&t park this morning. it sounds like a couple of people can get lucky, right? >> reporter: that's absolutely right. i have to say all the screaming fans have finally made it home after a night that they won't forget. it was just incredible. you know, the giants down in the series. they come back, as you said, win it 9-0 in the pouring rain. and those fans were celebrating. this is the kind of stuff that we're seeing out in front of the park this morning, the champagne corks for those champagne showers. after all the celebrating was over, the giants did send out one last tweet of the night saying that they would be giving away two world series tickets,
6:45 am
to check back on their page, sometime around 9:00 this morning. 43,000 fans didn't care that they got soaked in the rain as the giants shut out the cardinals to win the pennant. they bought up what they could at the dugout store. limited t-shirts and hats that were immediately available. they popped their own champagne. the never-say-die giants, who won the 2010 world series, well, they're back in it. >> i've come from florida just to get to game six an game seven. i'm here for the world series, baby. >> reporter: i checked stubhub this morning. the ticket resaler. the giants take on the detroit tigers tomorrow night at at&t park. standing room only tickets there starting at about $420. before we go, i just wanted to show you what the "san francisco chronicle" looks like this morning, that headline. wow! what a giant win.
6:46 am
with a picture of pablo sandoval hugging one of his teammates. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks, christie. and the rain couldn't dampen anyone's spirit last night. >> no. singing and dancing in the rain. >> yeah, how about skiing in the snow? snowboarding. >> maybe this weekend i hear. >> it's actually looking very, very optimistic. we actually have some really great video that just came into our newsroom. blue canyon. bring your chains if you're headed up there today. by tomorrow we should be able to see the white caps of the sierra nevada just absolutely spectacular. there's more snow coming down as we speak. take it right to the satellite/radar compilation. as you can see just to the south of lake tahoe we're still getting a lot of blue. right at 7:00 feet, two feet of fresh powder and there's more on the way. there's another system on this one's heels. it works out like this. showers racing out of the bay
6:47 am
area, but there's more on the way. we'll time out our next wave of rain which arrives at 8:00 p.m. up in the north bay. you can see embedded in the green a little bit of yellow, some of that moderate to heavy rainfall coming down. at 5:00 a.m. you can see over san francisco, the bay bridge, nice, slick commute tomorrow morning. stop that clock one more time at noon tomorrow. finally the whole thing races out of here. we get sunshine between 12:00 and 4:00 and that's good news if you're sick of the rain. your temperatures are also going to climb. 61 degrees in oakland today, 59, that's it in san francisco, and 60 degrees right here in beautiful san jose. here's your seven-day outlook, it works out like this. finally the 70s return. as we get into friday, the sun comes back out in full force, but i do want to remind everybody, whenever we get significant moisture on the ground and high pressure builds back in, that equates to one thing only, a lot of fog. that's what we're expecting as we meet back here tomorrow, friday, saturday morning as well. the sun will come out, nice, sunny finish to your weekend
6:48 am
days. by monday, more rain. 6:47. let's check on your drive with mike. >> at least we've got the sun on the weekend. looking over towards the south bay, it's traffic tuesday, the opposite of an easy weekend. we've got slowing in all these spots. the orange in the 40s. the upper 40s but still the 40s. look at that 85 coming off 101, slowest path 87 in your commute direction and an accident at camden but it's moved to the shoulder, slowing in both directions as that activity took place. north 17 at 85. an accident to the shoulder there as well. but the connector, that is open. north of there, a little slow at saratoga. here's 101 and now 280 kicking in with the slowdown all the way through san jose and heading up into cupertino. we also have that slow drive still going on south 680 towards sunol, but the earlier issue over there by the golf course has cleared away from the shoulder so now you just have the folks making their way into the fremont side. a little extra slow coming out of pleasanton and also off the
6:49 am
dublin interchange. the castro valley y very slow. that's a typical commute but also southbound as you're heading down through hayward, an accident. this causes additional slowing heading down toward 92 where an earlier accident just a few minutes ago cleared to the shoulder as well. getting really congested here. be careful, still might have some slick conditions. we'll get a look at the roadways with your camera and you'll see the traffic flowing north past the coliseum starting to slow right around high street and again at the toll plaza. of course the metering lights are on, the backup past grand avenue into the maze. across the bay we're looking at a smooth but congested drive as you're getting off of the high rise. here the san mateo bridge looking from the san mateo side. the peninsula and the approach to 101, it's a little crowded but you're still holding close to the speed limit. that's good news. watch those slick roads, guys. back to you. now to decision 2012 and the race for the white house. >> strong, steady leadership,
6:50 am
not wrong and reckless leadership. >> attacking me is not an agenda. >> every time you've offered an opinion, you've been wrong. >> our navy has been smaller than that any time since 1917. >> governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets. >> a foreign policy debate that was more engaging than the first debate, less contentious than the last. for more we're joined by marla tellez with expert opinions about who will get the biggest boost from last night's showing. good morning, marla. >> good morning. political science professor dr. jim cottrell from santa clara university has been with us all morning long giving us some insight into last night's debate. thanks for being with us. laura just touched on it a little bit. the showdown in florida was less contentious than the previous debate. some critics even saying that it was plain out boring. what do you think of the overall feel? >> well, you didn't have the sense they were going to punch each other, that's for sure. they were very calm. i think in terms of foreign policy, you want to reassure voters that you have somebody who has steady leadership, who's calm and cool in a crisis.
6:51 am
i think that's what both of the candidates were trying to do. you didn't see the interruptions that you saw in the other debate. it probably made bob schieffer's job a lot easier than perhaps with jim lehrer or candy crkro y crowley. it was a much more sedate tone. now that we've done foreign policy and had a calm, rational discussion, we'll move on to other issues. >> it was a foreign policy debate but at times both candidates veered off of that and into domestic issue. did that surprise you? >> it didn't surprise me much. i think certainly in the case of romney, he wants to pivot back to the economy as much as he can because that's the area he feels more comfortable. obviously both candidates know that that's the issue that matters most to voters, their pocketbook. they're going to be thinking about jobs and the economy. so it's not terribly surprising that they would pivot back to the economy whenever they could. >> election day is just two weeks away from today. what do they need to do moving forward? >> well, i think moving forward they're going to get back on the economy and start talking about
6:52 am
jobs again. they'll probably leave foreign policy a little bit behind. and i think the president wants to build on momentum from the debate. i think he was regarded as the winner last night and that he came out a little bit ahead, so both he and romney are going to the swing states. they're going to try to talk about the economy and get ohio and florida voters energized and get those undecided votes. >> okay, thanks so much for being with us all morning long. >> thank you sglpt thank you very much. new this morning, apple getting all set to have another announcement. they're unveiling another thing for the second time over the last month. but the question is, is all the hype surrounding the new apple gadgets starting to fade a little bit? business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is live outside the california theater in san jose. scott, today's announcement apparently aimed at the only serious competition that apple still has in that tablet game. >> reporter: that's right. we're talking about the really small tablets, jon. amazon says its kindle fire is the best-selling thing that you
6:53 am
can buy on amazon. so apple really needs to respond. so we do expect at the california theater this morning at 10:00 a.m., apple will announce a smaller ipod. everybody has been calling it the ipad mini but we don't know what the official name is. we have heard these are already in production in china, so we should expect these in stores fairly soon. the other big question is how much will they cost. amazon is essentially selling its kindle at a loss. will apple be willing to match that? we doubt it. apple likes its profits. and it makes about 33% profit on its ipads. the other thing to watch is for the first time in years, apple is going to live stream its own event at apple.com. or if you have an apple tv box as well. so we used to have to rely on live blockers an that kind of thing to find out what was happening as it happened. now everybody can watch it on television and come with us to an apple event at apple.com.
6:54 am
back to you. >> and they are events, aren't they, scott? in fact they have had one there in the past, a little bit of history there? >> reporter: yeah. this one -- this is -- california theater, they don't rent out very often. but i remember years ago this is where they introduced the u2. ipod. it was the black and red one. u2 actually came and played for us. it was bono and it was absolutely awesome. we'll see this time around if there's a musical guest. probably not u2. >> we'll see if lady gaga makes an appearance or something. thanks so much, scott. also a big day for mark zuckerberg and facebook and the company prepares to issue its third quarter earnings after today's closing bell. the social media giant reached one billion active users earlier this month. it debuted on nasdaq back in may on $38 a share. yesterday it closed just over $19. in the meantime yahoo! is seeing a stock surge right now.
6:55 am
in after hours trading, yahoo! rose 73 cents to $16.50. now to a follow-up story you'll see only here on nbc bay area. a mother in los gatos fighting right now to try to keep her daughters in school after the district ordered her to keep them away. the mother says that school is retaliating against her after she asked for special accommodation for her daughters' severe nut allergies. arturo santiago spoke to that family this morning and he joins us live from los gatos. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. the mother of these two little girls says she tried to meet with the school superintendent yesterday but the superintendent refused to take the meeting. police officers, however, have been told by the district to not allow her and her two daughters onto the campus. edwards knows about this and she's still going to try to take her daughters to school. her daughters are 9-year-old ella an 7-year-old sara. they have severe nut allergies. contact with trace amounts of nuts could be life threatening
6:56 am
for them. their mother says the school will not provide a classroom environment that's safe for her daughters and has been told the girls have not been allowed to go to the school basically kicking them out. the school district asserts that edwards doesn't live at the address that they used to enroll an does not belong at the elementary school. >> it's not something that's going to scare the girls. i have all of my residency paperwork, everything that we brought to the district originally to sign the girls up for school, we will have. by law the girls are entitled to go to the school in the district they live in, which is los gatos, so there should be no reason for us not to be allowed on campus. >> reporter: when it comes to nut allergies, each school district has its own policy. they are not regulated by the state. and again, edwards will be expected to be met by police when they arrive here at van meter elementary school later on this morning. live in los gatos, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, arturo. we want to check the
6:57 am
forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. we've been seeing some rain. don't wash the car just yet? >> no. hey, i got a free one earlier on this week, i don't know about you. yeah, we've got more rain in the forecast. we're going to get a little bit of a break. we'll see some breaks of sunshine but mostly cloudy and cool conditions for today. look at that, that last batch of showers pushing east of gilroy racing into the central valley leaving us with a nice, dry bay area. as we head interest this afternoon because the cold front came through, highs will struggle to break out of the 50s at the coast. low 60s anticipated bayside and inland just about 64 degrees, even in livermore. but as we head through the second half of tomorrow, you bet your bottom dollar the sun will come out and i'm still going to love you then, mike inouye. i love you tomorrow, i love you today. >> i love you more than yesterday. that's a whole different genre of music. looking over here, spreading the love but no love lost because we have some traffic flow. this is traffic tuesday.
6:58 am
so expect to see the slowing but not kwoit this severe for north 280 and slow off of south 680. north 101 really kicking in but that's not the worst of it. north 87 coming up past capital really jamming down over the last ten minutes up into downtown san jose. the red speeds are down toward 20. that's horrible. north 85 also jamming up all the way up towards the almaden expressway. causing all of this backup. very tough drive off of 101 both directions. a live look outside, we'll show you what it's like at 101. northbound coming up past university. the volume really picking up. you see the sheen off the roadway, maybe some slicker conditions so watch the on and off-ramps. so far 101 into the city is doing okay as far as the speeds go. on the east bayside we're looking at 880. southbound is the volume build here for fremont coming out of union city and a slower drive now coming past the truck scales but still smooth through
6:59 am
milpitas and through san jose, guys. back to you. 6:58. one last check of the day's top stories. there are also traffic troubles north of los angeles. as many as ten big rigs were involved in a crash in the new hall pass area. diesel spilled all over the roadway and chp says rain may have played a factor. it's been a rough couple of weeks for lance armstrong. he has now removed references to the tour de france on his twitter home page and his bio. the cyclist stripped of his seven tour de france titles yesterday an he was banned from the sport for life. so far the social media change is armstrong's only public reaction. and the giants are headed to the world series after beating the st. louis cardinals in a shutout last night. what a game. game one of the world series is tomorrow at at&t park against the detroit tigers. >> let the world series games begin. it's going to be a blast. >> we can be a little biased on that story. >> a lot of bias. >> a lot
