>> good morning. it has been jumping since i woke up this morning. you can see still raining here this morning. i'm hoping we get the worst of it this morning so that by game time it is totally dry out here. san francisco has turned into a baseball town and this city is ready. we were in the dugout yesterday and it was like the floor of the stock exchange. people just grabbing anything that they could with that giants logo on it. really, the city has only had about 24 hours to prepare to be on the world stage again. one of the keys to all this of course, try to keep the field dry at att park. crews worked on the infield and brought in thousands of pounds of new dry dirt. the field is designed to drain. and they use giant vacuums to suck up the water in these type of situations. outside, they're cleaning up. inside, vendors setting up. vendors very happy about this.

t-shirt makers, they're busy too. he called people on monday to start getting ready. >> already have in contact all of my public safety agencies to begin all the preparations for the world series. and we're thrilled about it of course but we're having to go about our work in a very time constrained way. >> of course, this isn't a new party for the san francisco zwrints. in many ways, they're using their same game plan from the 2010 world series. they've got more than 1,000 journalists here covering this week. coming up, we'll be talking about what tickets are still available, what you might pay to get them and what some crazy fans are willing to do to get their hands on world series tickets. that's the latest reporting live at att park. i'm christy smith today in the

bay. >> even jimmy fallon getting in on that world series fever. the nbc host featuring the series last night in his pros and cons segment. >> pro, president obama went to detroit and yelled go tigers. pro, mitt romney went to detroit and yelled go bankrupt. why would you do that? >> oh, he's got 'em. more from the segment, later on in the newscast. worth sticking around for. some much needed good news for drivers. gas prices finally coming down quite a bit right here in the bay area over the last week. we've seen a 20% drop. experts predicting prices will go lower just in time for thanksgiving travel. live in san jose now. the question is, how low are we talking? >> well, it's just under $4 a gallon at this arco station at capital and barry este in san jose. it is cheaper than most but it does underscore the drop in

prices. let's take a look at the bay area numbers. according to aaa's online daily fuel gauge report, average prices in san francisco are 4:45 a gallon which is down from last week's $4.65. in oakland, it's $4.34 down from $4.56. in san jose, prices averaging $4.34 of regular gas, which is down from $4.55 last week. now, there are a number of factors involved in the drop in prices across the state from record highs of a couple weeks ago. refineries are coming back online. the winter blend of gas which is cheaper is now getting to local gas stations and people are basically driving less. the state average, the statewide average that is for regular unleaded gas is $4.40 a gallon. it had reached a record high of $4.67 a gallon back on october 9th. the national average is down to $3.65 for regular unleaded. experts think prices can even go lower with increasing supplies and get down to possibly $4 a

gallon by thanksgiving. that's averaging maybe even $3.75 on average by the end of the year. we're live in san jose. i'm arturo santiago "today in the bay." 5:09 now. want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. live in san francisco. she had an umbrella out earlier. how we looking now? you got a cap! >> rocking the look. >> i got a cap. you guys don't have to worry about me this morning. i brought a towel. i will stay dry. a rally towel. whatever i need to dry it off. look at that. just shake it around a little bit and it's dry in a matter seconds. going to take you to your radar this morning. temperatures are cool to start. we are in the 50s and the 60s. and we're going to see this rain subside in just a couple hour. let's take you right to your radar and show you where the last significant band of moisture is located. you can see from half-moon bay,

sunnyvale, we had light showers. look at san francisco. yes, much improvement in this neck of the woods. we're going to continue to clear out once this last wave of moisture comes through. now, we are fair game for on and off very light spotty showers. as we head through the second half of the day. but nothing heavy. if we do see any sort of delays later on this evening for the game, it will be towards the end of the game. we're not expecting any major downpours once this last batch comes through. we're going to be tracking these showers live from att park. lots of fun, lots of surprises up my sleeve this morning. so stay tuned. mike, it was a rough drive. i have to point that out. along the peninsula. i took 101 to 280 and it was rough. >> that's exactly the same area where we're still seeing some puddling. you have a cap, i have humidity resistant spray. the roadway, there's a lot of humidity by the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll show you all over the lens we have these droplets over

there. that will be of course the same situation for the road and of course your windshield. keep that in mind. the lower the speeds. it's tough to stop in this kind of weather. we see the green splotches still where areas of wet pave minumenl be an issue. we still have the other issue, the sig alert for highway 12. there is a closure there because of the big rig that went off the road, stuck in the mud, and have to pull that out, so both directions are closed. use american canyon as your alternate. more in the next report. it is 5:11. coming up, we have new details this morning of the investigation into a homicide and arson fire. and two young girl, in the south bay reportedly turned away from school because of food allergies.

welcome back, everybody. it is 5:14. a few hot-button issues. a story we first brought you on friday and one you'll only see right here on nbc bay area. two girls banned from school allegedly over their severe food altlerg allergies. >> we told you how the girls were turned away from their school tuesday morning. the superintendent has decided to allow these girls to return to the elementary school this morning. the girl's mother says the district kicked them out to

avoid dealing with their life threatening allergies to nuts. the superintendent says they were denied because the family does not live within the district. the edwards say they showed proof of residency before school started. in mountview now, people concerned about a busy road near graham middle school will meet tonight to talk about ways to improve student safety on castro street. this month alone, three children had been hit on castro. all three are expected to be okay. that meeting is scheduled for 7:00 tonight at graham middle school. a cell tower that could go up in san jose's evergreen neighborhood goes up for debate tonight once again before the city's planning commission. verizon wants to install the tower near evergreen elementary but some are worried about radiation. the public hearing is set for inside city chambers. >> thank you very much. it's 5:15 now. apple on tuesday did as expected and introduced a smaller ipad

with a smaller price. scott mcgrew, not a much smaller price. >> that was the surprise, that and they introduced ipad 4. the ipad mini was the star of the show. >> this is ipad mini. >> apple says the least expensive ipad mini will be $329. that's significantly more money than the price of other small tablets it's supposed to compete against. and more than we expected. for instance, the kindle fire is half that much money. shares always fall after a big announcement. but this was a bigger drop than usual. we suspect because of the worry over the mini's price. san francisco gamemaker zynga reports its profits today. the news is going to be ugly. we already know they will cut staff. the ceo says the company will shut down some games as well. we don't know which ones at this point. they had a brief shining moment

but never quite lived up to hopes. it was a rough day on the stock market yesterday. let's turn to hampton pierce sp. he's live at cnbc headquarters with more. good morning, hampton. >> how you doing, scott. after that rough day yesterday, futures are higher after the big sell-off. that was sparked by disappointing earnings from the likes of 3m and dupont. a drop in oil in gas. the dow had its third worst day of the year. the fed wraps up its two-day meeting this afternoon but isn't expected to make any major changes in policy. we also get data later on this morning in manufacturing, new home sales and earnings from att, boeing, eli lilly, delta and us airways. yesterday, the dow dropping 243 points to close at 13,102. the nasdaq losing 26 points to close at 2,990. the cost of a higher education continues to rise. the college board says instate tuition for a four-year public

school rose $400 this fall or about 5% to an average of $8665 a year. that's up modestly from past years. if you include room and board, the total cost averages about $17,860. the price tag for a private school, $39,518. however, only about one-third of the students pay full price, if you factor in student aid, grant, tax credit and scholarships. and paying for that education long after you leave school. guys, before i go, from your favorite east coast refugee, two words, go giants. >> very nice. hampton pierson. thank you kindly. in washington, d.c. this morning. hampton makes an interesting point not just about the giants but about college tuition. we all say it's going up, right? is it really? by the time you pay and you get all those little credits, it may not be. i posted something on top of our facebook page. i think you'll find that very interesting, particularly if you have children at home.

going to push towards san jose. a lot of it won't reach san jose. if you're making your way up the peninsula, you want to travel cautiously this morning with slick conditions. 48 degrees in livermore. 50 in sunnyvale. highs are pretty comfortable. these temperatures are going to warm up quickly. let's show your weather headlines for the day. showers mostly in the north bay as we head throughout the second half of the day. that's where we're expecting the activity. start the clock on your future cast at noon. maybe one more wave of moisture over the south bay. look what happens, we completely clear out. just in time for the first pitch at 5:07. it looks like we will stay mostly clear all the way through tonight. however, we have an unstable air mass overhead so you don't want to rule anything out. 55 degrees at 6:00 p.m. if we see showers towards the end of the game right around 7:00. breezy conditions out there.

okay. you're just using those wipers occasionally. the rain is coming like we talked about so keep that in mind if you travel later on in your commute. we'll track this carefully as well. no slowing for the south bay. in freemont, maybe some misting conditions. but much less of the case than we saw on 101 so just use caution on the off ramps. here's the build coming out of the pass, pretty typical for friday. authorities need your help finding the man involved in a brutal homicide in castro valley. deputies identified the victim as barbara lashly. they say she was killed inside the home, then it was set on fire. officers looking for this man described as short and in his late teens. detectives think he may have entered a home through a door, a window left open during the warmer weather. they also say he stole the victim's station wagon which was later found abandoned.

welcome back, everyone. let's not forget about the sharks that are usual way playing. not now because of that nhl lockout. no meetings scheduled for today but they may have to start chopping games off the season. a popular beach town closed this morning following a deadly shark attack. actually, the beach itself is closed. police say a 39-year-old surfer was killed yesterday just off surf beach which is near vanderburg air force base. investigators are looking at the surf board, trying to identify bite marks. the attack happened near the

very same spot where another surfer died two years ago. shark experts agree a great white was probably responsible and it has probably not left the area. >> white sharks has attacked people in waist deep water. the majority of attacks happening in 10 to 30 feet water depth because that's where the seals are and that's where we are. >> since 1950, a total of 13 people have died during approximately 109 shark attacks along california's coastline. >> it's 5:26. still to come on "today in the bay," police need your help finding the person responsible for a series of home burglaries in one east bay city.

matchup. amy, we're expecting a barn-burner out there, huh? >> yeah, you're looking at a tale of two totally different pitchers this evening. it's going to play out great it it's going to be fun no matter what. as you mentioned, justin verlander. the tigers ace, a power pitcher it the reigning mvp. has a chance to win a second straight cy young. going up against barry zito, a former cy young winner himself. if you look at verlander's postseason record, he has been spot on. in three starts, he's got a .74 rae. and he's thrown 25 punchouts. for zito, we're going with you're only as good as your last outing. he was the winner game five of the nlcs. got his game back to the west. he threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball in that game. for zito, it's not about what he's done, he's totally focused on the task at hand.

down to $5,000, $2,000 for field club seats. if you have tickets and are willing to trade, ticketless fans are ready to deal. one man from daily city tells the chronicle this morning he'd go ahead and jump in mccovey cove in his underwear for you for some tickets. a woman from oakland says she'd eat a cockroach for hot sauce on it. another one said she'd clean your house. some other ideas, dipping into the college fund. there a man on craigslist who is trying to put an expensive mattress up, about $1,200, to see if anyone will trade him that for some tickets. people willing to do just about anything to see this game. reporting live in san francisco, christy smith, "today in the bay." >> hot sauce and strip tease. must be the world series. mountain view police releasing a sketch of a man they say attempted to rob somebody on the steven's creek trail. officers say a man who looked like this approached the victim

on the trail last tuesday and tried to take his backpack. those two struggled. the suspect eventually took off without that backpack. the victim suffered minor injured. anybody with information in this case is asked to call the police. 5:36. al meet that county police are searching for a serial burglar. eight daylight home burglaries reported last week in a neighborhood near central alameda. in one instance, the suspect escaped after being confronted by a homeowner. investigators say the robber would often cut through a window screen to get in. police are warning residents to make sure doors and windows with, are locked at all times. gas prices plummeting across much of california. experts predict we could see them slip below $4 a gal be in

the next four weeks. what's driving these plunging costs? >> the prices here in san jose have -- they really punctuate the drop in prices here in the bay area. underunder $4 a gallon. $3.99 for a gallon of regular gas. experts think this is a trend that could continue till the end of the the year. the drop in prices from across the state can be attributed to a number things. refineries are back online. the cheaper winter blend of gas. people are simply driving less. the statewide average for regular unleaded gas is $4.40 a gallon. now, the national average is also down to $3.65 for regular unleaded. let's take a look at bay area prices. now, according to aaa's online

barack obama is telling americans governor romney cannot be trusted. another poll shows mr. realomne continues to close the gap with voters. now, tracie potts, on capitol hill. >> good morning. we're watching the polls very closely in the final days of this campaign. because the closer we get, the closer the polls seem to get in terms these two candidates. "washington post"/abc out this morning, the first big poll that has come out in favor of romney. but another poll had the president up by one. bottom line, both of these within the margin of error, we're tied. president obama hitting eight states over the course of three days. today in iowa, colorado, california and nevada. >> all right, tracie, thank you. it is 5:44. police are investigating the gruesome murder scene in the

sacramento area. a mother and her two children found dead inside their own home. now police are asking for the public's help. today, "today in the bay"'s live in the newsroom with the story. >> the story seems like it was taken straight out of a horror movie. police in rancho cordova say a man came home to find his wife and two children murdered. the discovery was made tuesday afternoon. police say the 2-year-old boy, 3-year-old girl and mother in her 20s were covered in blood. a shocking scene even to law enforcement. the mother's sister telling our sister station in sacramento her older sister recently expressed fear. >> you feel like your sister had felt threatened? >> oh, yeah, the whole family felt threatened. >> now police are scrambling to find leads and a van they say was stolen from the family's home. it is a white '05 chrysler town and country minivan with a license plate on your screen.

mccovey cove. that is traditionally the case as we get a prevailing wind here in san francisco out of the west-northwest. tonight's winds are going to be headed out of the west-southwest. for us, that's going to carry the ball toward s right field a opposed to mccovey cove. our guys know how to work this field. this is not their first rodeo. they're going to take advantage of that wind. let's talk about where the showers are still come down this morning as we still have quite a bit of wet weather on the radar. but only for a couple more hours. this is the last wave of significant moisture before we start to get some residual spotty, very light activity for the second half of the day. but, hey, give yourself plenty of time this morning. if you're headed up the peninsula from san jose or headed down from san francisco, it is going to be kind of a mess this morning as it has been raining in this general area. for the past three hours. the forecast tells the story. in the mid to upper 60s for today inland. 70s, they're just around the corner as we head through
