pablo sandoval with a historic night. we are live inside at&t park coming up. >> reporter: the bat the panda used to slug those three homers, what becomes of it and other memorabilia from game one of the world series? i'm bob redell. i'll take you live to the cove coming up. >> reporter: and going to a world series game can be a very expensive proposition. i'm arturo santiago live at at&t park. we'll have dough tails on this coming up. >> and you'll notice arturo not bundled up out there in san francisco. mild start this morning. we have fog and drizzle on the radar but we're done with the rain. your forecast is just moments away. >> construction is another story. we'll bring you that update coming up. right now we serve up a live look from san francisco. that is the bay bridge. the giants' magic is sweeping the entire bay area on this thursday, october 25th. get ready, we've got more. this is "today in the bay."
5:01 am
it is 5:01. a very good morning in the day after the world series game one. always happy to have you along with us, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. the panda, pablo sandoval, giving fans what they were looking for and even more. >> remember three is the magic number? sandoval hitting not one, not two, but three home runs last night in his first three at-bats and that puts him in a very exclusive list. only three other players in baseball history have hit three home runs in a world series. albert pujols, reggie jackson and the illustrious babe ruth. no shocker after the ball game sandoval was simply all shocked up. >> things you're going to never forget, you know, especially in the world series. you dream like a little kid
5:02 am
being in the world series. to hit three home runs is too much for me right now. >> that's just about right for giants fans, loving it. sandoval's historic night going hand in hand with another great story line, redemption. >> yeah, thaert. comcast sportsnet's amy gutierrez was there last night. she's there with a cleoser look at the barry zito story as well. what a great night, huh, amy? >> reporter: it was a fantastic night. really fun to be here and witness. zito overshadowed by pablo's accomplishments. overshadowed has been said a lot. he has absolutely struggled in five seasons with the g-men. so much so he was left off the 2010 postseason roster. but 2012 has been a year of redemption for zito, continuing
5:03 am
to turn out strong, solid performances in pressure-packed situations. game one of the world series a pretty big stage and zito gives his team 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. for the first time this postseason the giants have a lead and they are in the driver's seat. >> we know we have it in our pocket that we can come back with our backs against the wall in elimination games. but there's no need to make us do that, to put that pressure on ourselves. for us to get the first game, especially against verlander, it's great. >> reporter: especially against verlander, who would have thunk it. the giants obliterated verlander last night. barry zito adding a little insult to injury with a fourth inning rbi single. i love it when pitchers are able to help themselves out. bruce bochy referring to barry
5:04 am
zito as the giants good luck charm. the giants have won each of barry zito's last 14 starts. tonight the giants handing over the ball to madison bumgarner. he's going to square off against california's own doug fister. first pitch at 5:07. look for madison bumgarner to let a little air out of that inflated 11.25 postseason e.r.a. it will be interesting to see what madison can do sgloenttoni >> i hope you get a chance to take a nap before the game. thanks, amy. no doubt a lot of giants fans hoping to get their hands on the bats and balls from last night. >> now some of that stuff will go on sale today from the clubhouse store at at&t park. that is where bob redell is live in the ball yard this morning. bob, we're wondering what kind of stuff can fans get out there today? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon and laura. as far as we know it's mostly
5:05 am
the balls from last night's game, the game during which pablo sandoval made world series history with those three home runs. that explains the postgame rush to the promenade deck store last night which sells memorabilia from the game. they were looking for anything related to the panda's performance, including the bat that he used to knock those three home runs into the stands. that bat and his power swings put him right up there with recommending y ja reggie jackson and babe ruth as he became the fourth player to hit three home runs in a world series game. that bat won't be going up for sale. earlier in the week they sold another bat of historical significance. we're talking about the wooden stick hunter pence used. that bat broke and hit the ball three times before being sent out into the field. it did end up in the hands
5:06 am
briefly of rick alonia who bought it from the clubhouse store for $400. >> i got up in the morning and told my boys about it. my 22-year-old said to me, you know, you should give hunter his bat back. and i go, oh, man, i just got it. >> well, he took his son's advice and returned the bat to pence before last night's game. in exchange for that broken bat he got a signed pence bat and two tickets to the ceo's suite. now, coming up in about a half hour, the giants are still looking for another piece of memorabilia from game seven, the one in which they clinched the pennant from the st. louis cardinals. we'll tell you what that's all about coming up. reporting live at the cove, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> giants fans no doubt stepping up and shelling out the big bucks just to be a part of that world series action. we're not just talking about tickets to the game. >> it turns out prices on everything from food to parking have skyrocketed. business owners are hoping to
5:07 am
really cash in on some of the playoff magic. >> take advantage is what they do. >> arturo santiago is crunching some numbers for us this morning. arturo, just expensive is it to get into the world series game, for example? >> reporter: well, let me put it to you this way, laura, i'm on the outside here looking in. this is the view from right field in mccovey cove. when you add up the cost of tickets, parking, merchandise, food and drinks, this could redefine the question is it worth it. keep in mind, though, that this is history in the making. first of all, getting into the game you'll need a ticket. they can cost anywhere from $200 for standing room only, $600 for lower box and up to $1,000 for the cream of the crop tickets. now, parking is nothing to honk at ieeither. >> valet parking can run from $90 to $130. you'll also need a program. you don't know who the players are without a program. the kauflt ofcost of a program 5
5:08 am
more than usual. when you're in the park you'll need to eat and drink which is a notorious expensive thing to do just during the regular season. think about what the cost would be to bring the whole family. >> this morning looks like it's going to be 1600 just to get a standing spot out in right field. so up from there, you know. sitting would have been $2,000 or more. >> we've got pins for $10. t-shirts are in the 30-35 range. >> your most expensive item? >> jerseys, $125. >> reporter: now, even if you just want to be part of the atmosphere around at&t park and watch the series from a bar or restaurant, that could also, of course, be a very expensive proposition. now, if you were to talk to any giants fan and ask them at the end of the day was it worth it? i think each one of them would say definitely. live from at&t park, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay."
5:09 am
switching gears, new this morning, officials at piedmont high school plan to hold an assembly to address an online fantasy sex league. the district superintendent addressed the highly publicized league during a school board meeting last night. the principal says female students were drafted as part of the league and that male athletes earned points for engaging in sexual acts with unknowing girls on the list. parents were notified about that website last week. the school now plans to address the situation with an assembly in december and district officials will interview students one on one. it is 5:09 right now. meteorologist christina loren is back with us and she is feeling the excitement, the magic of the giants. she also is pretty happy about that weather forecast. >> indeed. nobody likes to be wrong when it comes to the world series. good morning to you, hopefully they'll get another win. weather will be much better tonight. we're not going to see all that much cloud cover later on this afternoon. we're starting out at 57 in san
5:10 am
francisco. nice and mild for the city. because of the mild start we're going to easily climb into the mid-60s before the day is done. you only broke into the upper 50s in san francisco yesterday. 55 in san jose and 56 in livermore. so your weather headlines tell the story. as we head through the afternoon, it's going to be nice. you'll see that deceptive sunshine. california sunshine returns but it's going to take a day for that very cool air to move out. it's going to be pretty nice this weekend for your outdoor plans. sdmec 67 in fremont, 69 in los gatos and 66 in san francisco. we'll have your seven-day outlook in my next report. first you've got to work for the weekend. mike is here to help you get there. >> exactly. we're looking over to 101. some folks have been working overnight, our road crews. this is facing south right at university, the mall over on the left side of your screen as you're heading north, the
5:11 am
headlights past university avenue. farther south i've marked the construction zone. saw a little slowing until a few minutes ago. that construction crew likely picked up. top of your screen maintenance cruise on the dumbarton bridge, no slowing, rarely is anything. so we'll skip over to the east bay. the san mateo bridge shows a little burst in volume so you might find a little slowing at the toll plaza for just a few. this is the south bay. we'll show you a wider view coming up in the next report. 5:11. coming up, investigative unit update. steven stock heads to washington to take a look at the new legislation created following our in-depth investigation into children working in california farm fields. plus we'll turn the number 3 into the number 4.
5:14 am
welcome back, everyone. good thursday morning to you. it's 5:14. you know apple fans love surprises but scott mcgrew says not all surprises. >> when apple announced the ipad mini, it also announced the ipad 4. stop for a minute and imagine you just bought the ipad 3, which was brand new. apple just announced that in march. you would be a bit irritated that you have old technology. so apple stores we hear are extending their very generous return policy from 15 days to 30, and they will exchange the ipad 3 and its old, old technology, seven months old, for the new ipad 4. this according to bloggers. now, this has happened before. it's hard to imagine, but when the very first iphone came out in 2007 not a lot of people bought it because it was so expensive. so just a couple of weeks in, apple dropped the price by $200.
5:15 am
that made early iphone buyers really angry. apple made up for it by giving them itunes credit. apple will report profits after the closing -- >> reporter: hey, good morning, scott. apple's troubles have been as far as the stock has been part of the problem for the markets. we've got the futures trending a bit higher this morning. we had two days of losses. yesterday again the issue was earnings. a lot of companies are reporting earnings that beat on the bottom line in terms of profits but their sales are a lot slower and that has a lot of investors concerned that we are seeing slowing in the economy. the fed as expected held the line on interest rates and pledged again to keep rates low until the economy recovery strengthens. today we're going to get data
5:16 am
for the weekly unemployment claims, as we do every thursday morning, and then we'll also get demand for durable goods, pending home sales and earnings from conoco phillips and p & g and apple along with amazon. the dow losing 25 points yesterday starts the day at 13,07 the nasdaq down 8 to 2981. i always wondered how people financed buying that latest purchase. some people are actually just selling their old -- 7-month-old ipad online. folks are taking that money to put towards the new new ipad. it's quite an ecosphere. >> that's the perfect thing. bertha coombs, thank you very much. in just a bit we'll talk about the fiscal cliff. lots of companies now very worried as we get closer. i'm going to count up how many days we are but it's getting
5:17 am
close. back to you. >> and it's serious. >> very much so. thank you very much. what about the forecast? >> not as serious. not as serious. it's going to be sunny california style for today, finally done with the rain. i know a lot of people are happy about that. but as you know, that cold weather is settling in. chances are you've had to use your heater over the past couple of days. because our days or shorter, we'll continue to cool off as we head through the month. i'm looking at your halloween forecast and it's looking rather rainy, so heads up, parents. 52 degrees in novato, 54 in sonoma. we're at 57 to start in san francisco. we've got a nice blanket of clouds overhead and as a result it's nice and mild. 56 in livermore. you might find some steady mist or drizzle on your way up the peninsula. we have some drizzle reported here in san jose. this afternoon the sun comes back out in full force. we've had cloudy afternoons each
5:18 am
and every day this week. that all changes today and we'll have a gradual warmup. so your futurecast tells the story. by noon today completely clear over the greater bay area. lots of sunshine, but it's still going to be cool. high pressure is going to take a little while to warm our temperatures back up to the 70s and 80s, but they will return. as we head to the weekend, tomorrow looks good. that dry north wind returns and we'll see those 80s as we head into the weekend. 70 in redwood city, 68 for oakland, 69 in concord and just 70 down in gilroy. adding an additional 5 to 8 degrees for your highs for friday and we'll peak sunday, 82 degrees. as we head through next week, it's going to be dicey. we've got an area of low pressure, tropical area sneaking up from the south and that brings us rain chances starting late tuesday into wednesday, thursday, friday, even saturday looking rather wet around here. we'll keep you updated on this next approaching system. stay tuned for that. 5:18. let's check on your drive with
5:19 am
mike inouye. >> you know things are pretty nice right now. the south bay not really a big deal. starting to pick up a few more cars on the surface streets. mostly the yellow indicates speeds down to 60, not a concern. construction still in place north of that 280/880 interchange. as you're heading past san carlos, you still have a smooth drive here. let's go to the update for sunol. heading northbound, we had an earlier accident that has completely cleared, so now no slowing pleasanton or sunol, but the commute direction at the top of your screen starting to show a little slowing right at the dublin interchange and more cars coming out of the altamont. eastbound still has construction, a little slow through the cone zone as is advised. live look outside, this is west 80 or east 580. it's the east shore freeway coming off of the bridge all the way down. the volume picks up but you're still close to the limit all the way to the toll plaza with a very light volume there at the
5:20 am
bay bridge itself. good stuff, guys. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 5:19. a california congresswoman is calling for new labor protection for kids who work in agriculture. the new legislation follows an in-depth investigation by nbc bay area's investigate unit that uncovered thousands of children working in the fields picking fruits and vegetables. investigative reporter steven stock first broke the story earlier this year and he joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: in a plit sal season where the presidential campaign is gathering all of the attention, there is a quiet movement starting on capitol hill to change the law governing children working in the fields of america. los angeles congresswoman lucille alard has reintroduced a bill which if passed would make child labor rules the same for agriculture as they currently are for every other industry in america. after watching our investigation documenting child labor here in california and in north carolina, los angeles
5:21 am
congresswoman lucille allard is calling for change. >> i was shocked because i really do believe this is one of our country's dirty little secrets. >> reporter: but there are others here in congress who are not so eager to pass new legislation to protect children working in agriculture. >> there's just no need for it. >> reporter: senator charles grassley of iowa is a co-sponsor of a bill that would do the opposite. it's called preserving america's family farms act. the bill would prohibit the government from changing rules governing children working in agriculture. rules that date back to 1938. >> but it wouldn't be unusual to be putting in 14 or even 18-hour days. there's probably no difference between dad putting it in and a 12-year-old boy putting it in. >> reporter: but even supporters of that proposed law admit that nothing is likely to happen on this issue quickly, and any changes face a tough political battle from the opposition. coming up tonight at 11:00 in our special report, we dig into
5:22 am
the details of this proposed law to protect children currently working in agriculture and we talk to a representative on the opposite side of this issue about why he thinks the current rules should stay the way they are. that's tonight at 11:00. i'm steven stock, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, steven. 5:22 right now. coming up we'll have a look at the hp pavilion, a live look there. the sharks. they're still off the ice because of that lockout. hear what president obama is saying about that matter coming up. [ woman ] dear chex cereal,
5:23 am
i've never written a fan letter before, but you've done what i thought was impossible: you made good-for-you, gluten-free cereals in a whole bunch of yummy flavors. cinnamon chex and honey nut chex are two of our favorites. when my husband rob found the chocolate one, we were in cereal heaven. the only problem is, with so many great flavors you're making it very hard to choose. so thanks. from your fans, the mcgregor family. 'cause we love chex. [ male announcer ] love chex? connect with us on facebook.

tax and income taxes for the state's highest earners. the governor has been crisscrossing the state pushing that initiative which he says will protect schools from major funding cuts and strengthen california's economy. 5:25. it is deadline day for negotiations in the nhl lockout. fans still waiting to see their sharks take the ice there. the league says if a deal is not done by today, there's no chance of an 82-game season. a list of newly cancelled games could be released today. last night jay leno asked the president about the lockout. >> every time these things happen, i just want to remind the owners and the players, you guys make money because you've got a whole bunch of fans out there who are working really hard. they buy ticket, they're watching on tv. y'all should be able to figure this out, get this done. >> the president taking on more serious topics this morning on
5:26 am
the "today" show. brian williams will have a one-on-one interview. you can see it at 7:00 right after this newscast. 5:26 right now. let's get it back to christina loren to talk about the weather and i'm sure a little giants sprinkled in there. >> let's get it back to the dry, sunny california style weather. that's what we're going to enjoy but only for a short stretch of time. rainy weather looking very active as we get into next week. you want to keep in the back of your mind halloween next wednesday. 70 in livermore, 68 in san jose and 69 in los gatos. as we head throughout this afternoon, we will see those clouds clear by 10:00 a.m. inland. you'll be clear in the city by about noon. lots of sunshine but it's still going to be cool. let's check your drive with mike. out here we're getting a nice smooth drive with the flow of traffic through palo alto. construction crews still clearing around the embarcadero. in the north bay we're looking at the southbound side.
5:27 am
a little glow to the lights and a little mist on the roadways but the volume just starting to build. live look shows you the san mateo bridge. reminder, this is not closed this weekend, it is open. fremont moves nicely as well. 880 at the limit. guys, back to you. 5:27 right now. still to come, oakland police investigating an overnight home invasion robbery. we'll have all the details coming up.

70s inland, 60s bayside and at the coast. your full forecast in just a few moments. these folks rushing to get to work so they can get home for game 2. we're looking at your traffic and will show you some slowing coming up. and a live look outside. san francisco, glowing orange this morning. hopefully the rest of the week as well. it's thursday, october 25th. this is "today in the bay." there is a certain glow all over the bay area, including right here on this set. it is 5:30, good morning, thank you for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. our top story is that big win for the giants. we've got team coverage. live reports from san francisco where memorabilia from last night's game actually is going on sale this morning. catch a piece of it. also a look for alternatives who fans who can't make it inside of the park but we start with comcast sportsnet's amy
5:31 am
gutierrez who was there for pablo sandoval's really historic game. really amazing to watch. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, you two. it was amazing, laura. of course pablo joining a very exclusive short list as only the fourth major league baseball player to hit three home runs in a single world series game. others on that list, babe ruth, reggie jackson and albert pujols. pablo, a miraculous night. he got to justin verlander not once but twice he went deep and then inflicted the same punishment on al albuquerque in the fifth. that bat is headed to cooperstown, pablo donating it last night to the hall of fame. guys, pablo is just living the groo dream literally. this is a moment that he dreamt about as a little kid growingup in venezuela, pretending to play in the world series. >> i still can't believe it, man, you know. you know, things you're going to
5:32 am
never forget, you know, especially in the world series. you dream like a little kid being in the world series. to hit three home runs is too much for me right now. >> reporter: that's a lot to take in. all right, giants still have work to do. game two tonight. first pitch 5:07. tigers doug fister squaring off against madison bumgarner. bumgarner looking to take a little air out of that 11.25 e.r.a. he has made a tweak in his mechanics. it will be interesting to see how that plays out. interesting and fun fact. pablo sandoval's three home run night only the second to take place here at at&t park. the first was at the very first game at at&t park back in 2000, kevin elster of the dodgers. needless to say i think giants fans are much happier about pablo. >> speaking of that, think how
5:33 am
many fans would be excited to get their hands on pablo sandoval's bat. >> sadly it's not for sale. the giants are keeping an extra close eye on their game memorabilia today after losing track of some key items from the championship game. bob redell is live at the ballpark. they actually tracked down one item but something is missing? >> reporter: yes, one piece is still missing. the giants and major league baseball try to keep bats, balls and other pieces of equipment of historical significance. such as the ball marco scutaro caught in the rain the other night, the final out that clinched the pennant for the giants. no one knows where that ball went. if you do know where it went, who knows, maybe it's in the clubhouse. the team almost lost another piece of equipment. we're talking about the bat that
5:34 am
hunter pence used. the giants accidentally sold it in their so-called clubhouse store where fans can buy memorabilia from the game. rick alonia did fork over $400 for pence's bat. after a change of heart and some pressure from his sons, he returned it yesterday to hunter pence. >> really important to get it back to him before they started the game since they got all this new magic to it, right? >> reporter: and in return for his graciousness, he received a signed bat from hunter pence and he got to watch last night's game one of the world series from the ceo's suite here at at&t park. now, after the game fans did rush to the clubhouse store trying to find anything related to pablo sandoval, including the bat that he used to hit those three homers. as you alluded to, no shocker,
5:35 am
that bat is not for sale. reporting live here at mccovey cove, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> there goes your christmas present. sorry. >> thanks for thinking of me. big heart. 5:35. if you're hoping to make it to one of the games but can't afford the tickets, there's still some hope for you. >> the faithful giants fans will be camped out near mccovey cove where you can watch that game for a good price, free. arturo santiago is out there live checking for the best spots. arturo arturo, what's happening? >> reporter: the secret here is what there is to do and how to do it. we are at the knot hole right between right field and mccovey cove. this is where people get to line up. they get a wristband and then they're allowed to watch three innings of the game from this spot and it's completely free. get this, there's also the arcade over in left field where
5:36 am
people can get in for free three innings at a time. and mccovey cove is also an inexpensive option. not buying a ticket to a world series game is a major cost saver, especially if all you want is just to be around while the giants try to win a world series. >> it's just a lot of fun to come down and say you went to the world series and see a little bit of the game. >> it's a wonderful experience. it's very exhilarating. it's where the real die hard fans are that can't afford to go in and can't afford the ticket. >> reporter: now, we're back to a live picture here. this is a pretty big knot hole in the right field fence at at&t park and a lot can happen in just three innings. so it really doesn't have to cost you an entire fortune or a small fortune is all you want to be is part of the celebration. we're live at at&t park, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." 5:36. new this morning oakland police are investigating a home
5:37 am
invasion robbery. officers say just before 11:00 last night someone broke into a home on coral road near the 98th avenue exist of interstate 880. police have not released any details of what happened but they do say no one was hurt. officers tell nbc bay area one person is in custody. a walnut creek nightclub could have its hours cut back by the city because of public safety concerns. city officials reviewing the vice ultra lounge for alleged permit violations, including fights and other rowdy behavior. reports show 30 fights or disturbances at that bar since 2009. the city now considering sanctions on that club to try to control the crowds. walnut creek's planning commission will consider the club's permit during a meeting set for tonight. if you're ready to head out the door, you might want to check the forecast first with meteorologist christina loren. >> before you go, leave that umbrella at home. we have a good-looking day shaping up, grab your jacket. 52 in novato, 57 in san

francisco, but the rainy weather the past three days finally a thing of the past. sunshine comes back out today in full force. 56 in livermore, 53 to start in concord and 56 in san mateo. for your morning drive you might find some steady drizzle along the peninsula, also in san jose it's misting out there. fremont, though, to oakland all the way through concord and fairfield, you're going to be clear by 10:00 a.m. look at this, over the entire bay area, that sun will come out and it's going to be a really nice-looking day. but you look out your window thinking it's warm and temperatures are going to be on the cool side. 70 livermore, 69 in fairfield and san francisco will accumulate 5 to 8 degrees of warmth from yesterday's highs where you only ended up in the upper 50s. cool, cloudy conditions, areas of drizzle by the afternoon. we'll get cool sunshine and the seven-day outlook reveals a really good-looking forecast for
5:39 am
the weekend. first let's see how we're doing with mike. >> we'll take you to the san mateo bridge. look at the taillights, that's the westbound commute direction picking up the number of cars here. there is a little slowing from 880 over to the toll plaza on the hayward side. the peninsula side we'll catch up with the maps and show you that 92 coming off of the bridge is fine to te101 but there's a little slowing between el camino and 280 itself. earlier reports on 280 of a deer having been hit and chp will do some follow-up. there may be an injured deer walking around. so far we have no update and no slowing at that scene. farther south we have a little slowing for 101 right around embarcadero. the final stages of the crews may be clearing but lanes are open through the area and traffic pretty good, light volume there. as well as the dumbo, no problems, in slowing there. 880 oakland picking up the volume but the nimitz no problem as far as the speeds. back to you.
5:40 am
coming up, the president pulling an all-nighter, kind of like the giants fans, but he's going coast to coast on the campaign trail. we'll have a live report coming up next. >> reporter: and a young girl's body is found along the san mateo county coastline. now officials are asking who is she? good morning, i'm marla tellez. i'll have her very specific description coming up.
5:42 am
time now to get you to decision 2012. i'm sure president obama kind of felt like it was back to his college days pulling an all-nighter last night. meantime mitt romney has a nonstop list of appearances all day long, including ohio today. tracie potts is live on capitol hill. with just 12 days left until that election, the candidates no doubt going full throttle ahead on this one, right? >> reporter: absolutely, jon, especially in those battleground states. several of them could swing this election and that's why we're seeing them focus there. let's start with the president because we have new video of him
5:43 am
