man. you know, things you're going to never forget. >> this morning the hunt for the orange october is getting a little help from a kung fu pand avmt good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. that's got a nice ripping to it. we call this guy the panda but maybe we should just call him mr. october. he hit not one, not two, but three home runs in game one of the world series in that victory over the detroit tigers. the giants taking the field again tonight. this morning we have our team in place at at&t park. bob redell is live outside the ball yard but we'll start off inside with csn bay area's amy gutierrez. she is the only reporter inside at&t park this morning. amy, the panda, sandoval, stealing that show last night but also another big night for pitcher barry zito. the comeback is on. he's feeling the magic.
6:01 am
>> reporter: he absolutely is. barry zito is used to being overshadowed, jon, because that's basically been his story. he's been overshadowed by that huge contract he signed with the giants back in 2007, struggling mightily for five seasons with the men in the orange and black, so much so that he was left off the 2010 postseason roster. but 2012 has been a year of redemption for zito, continuing to turn out solid performances for his team. last night on one of the biggest stages, game one of the world series, he gives the giants 5 2/3 innings of one-run baseball. guys, he did it without all of his pitches, but you take his curveball and his cutter, you combine that with pablo's hat trick and the giants get a game one victory. for the first time in this postseason the giants are in the drie driver's seat. >> we know we have it in our pocket that we can come back with our backs against the wall in elimination games but there's
6:02 am
no need to put that pressure on ourselves. so for us to get the first game especially against verlander is just -- you know, it's great. >> reporter: really nice to see barry zito having some success. pablo's three home run night was so much fun, we're going to show you again. two of those home runs came off of the tigers ace, justin verlander. who would have thunk it. the giants obliterated verlander last night. barry zito adding a little insult to injury with a fourth inning rbi single himself. game two tonight. the giants have a lot of work to do still. 5:07 first pitch. tigers doug fister will square off against madison bumgarner. bumgarner has made a tweak in his mechanics and it's going to be interesting to see how that plays out. it's going to be fun. let's get it back to you guys. >> thanks so much, amy. well, that history-making night all the more special for pablo sandoval because his family was
6:03 am
up in the stands watching it all unfold. we've got video of the giants heading into the clubhouse after the game, high fiving throngs of family and friends. the moment really started to sink in for sandoval who got emotional while talking to us in the locker room. >> especially in the world series, you dream like a little kid of being in the world series. hitting three home runs is too much for me right now. >> sandoval is now the fourth player to hit three home runs in a world series game. he's the first player to hit home runs in each of his first three plate appearances in a world series game. amazing. >> a lot of giants fans out there hoping to get their hands on some of those bats and balls from last night's game. some of it will go on sale today from the clubhouse store located at at&t park. that is where bob redell is live right now at the ball yard. bob, we want to know how many cool things -- what kind of stuff will be available out there? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. as far as we know mostly balls

from last night's game. the game during which pablo sandoval made world series history with those three home runs, which explains this scene last night after the game. the postgame rush to the promenade store from the clubhouse items. they sell basically memorabilia from each game. the fans were looking for anything related to the panda's performance, including the bat that he used to knock those three home runs into the stands. no surprise, that bat will not be going up for sale. you could say the giants learned their lesson earlier in the week when they accidentally sold another bat of historical significance. we're talking about the wooden stick hunter pence used to hit a two-run double in the seventh game against the cards. that's the bat that broke and hit the ball three times before going out into the field. it did end up, the bat that is, in the hands of rick alonia who bought it from the clubhouse store for $400. >> i got up in the morning and
6:05 am
told my boys about it. and my 22-year-old said to me, you know, you should give hunter his bat back. i go, oh, man, i just got it. >> reporter: he took his son's advice, returned the bat to pence before last night's game. in exchange, he got a pence-signed bat and two tickets to the ceo's suite where he did watch game one last night. coming up in about 45 minutes, the giants did get that bat back but they are still looking for another piece of memorabilia from game seven. that was the pennant race game that the giants clinched the pennant from the cards. we'll tell you what that's all about coming up. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." if fans aren't trying to get some of that memorabilia, they're shelling out plenty of money to see history. we checked stubhub this morning. standing room only tickets are going for $499 each. seats in the bleachers going for

morning game one of the world series in the record books. along with a new candidate for the title of mr. october. >> like a little kid being in
6:44 am
the world series. to hit three home runs is too much for me right now. >> oh, it was a lot for your fans too. he hit three home runs in the game one win over the detroit tigers. giants off to a certain solid start but there are more games to play in the series starting with game two tonight. this morning we have team coverage of our own. taking the field, bob redell, arturo santiago outside of the stadium but we with amy gutierrez. amy, you spoke to sandoval. what did he tell you about his big at-bats? it was so amazing. >> reporter: pablo sandoval always says to me i'm so excited, i'm so excited, i'm so excited. and that's what he said last night when i interviewed him. of course he joined a very exclusive and short list as only the fourth major league baseball player to hit three home runs in a single world series game. others on that list, babe ruth,
6:45 am
reggie jackson and albert pujols. last night pablo sandoval could not not hit anything. he took tiger's ace justin verlander not once, but twice and inflicted the same punishment on tigers reliever al albuquerque. the bat that hit those two home runs on its way to cooperstown. pablo donated it last night to the hall of fame. as you heard, pablo sandoval is living the dream. this is a moment he dreamt about as a little kid growingup in venezuela, pretending to play in a world series game. >> i can't believe i did it. it's one of those things that you say you get piece out there. you play seven games and the last series, we keep it hot because we get just one day off. we have to play our game. >> reporter: the giants certainly can't get kwum fee.
6:46 am
this is a seven-game series. but pablo's three home run night is only the second in at&t park history. the first to do it, kevin elster, a dodger, on the very first game to take place at at&t park back in 2000. i'm sure the fans are much happier with pablo' feat. game time tonight, first pitch at 5:07. tigers doug fister going up against the giants madison bumgarner. the giants hope to go to detroit with two under their belt. back to you guys. >> thank you so much, amy. nothing short of an historic night for pablo sandoval but also for barry zito. this was a major shot of redemption. he was cheered by fans as he took the field. in the past we remember fans heckling zito for failing to produce results after signing that big, fat contract worth more than $120 million. last night zito stepped back and admits, yeah, he feels great. >> for us to get the first game,
6:47 am
especially against verlander, is just -- you know, it's great. >> it was a great night all the way around for zito and also the cy young winner lasted through five innings before he was relieved by another cy young winner, tim lincecum, who looked good too. >> if you're trying to make it to one of the games but can't afford a ticket, some faithful giants fans will be camped out near mccovey cove for free for a time. arturo santiago is live in san francisco checking out the best spots for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. a little bit earlier on we were talking about how expensive it was to watch a world series game here at at&t park. this is kind of the flip side to that coin. the secret is knowing what there is to do and how to do it. we are at the knot hole between right field and mccovey cove. this is where people get to line up and get a wristband and are allowed to watch three innings of the game and it's completely
6:48 am
free. there's also the arcade over in left field where people can get in for free three innings at a time. if you're into baseball and floating and don't have to see the game, mccovey cove is an inexpensive option and not buying a ticket to a world series game is a major cost saver, especially if all you want to do is just be around while the giants try to win a world series. >> it's just a lot of fun to come down, say you went to the world series and get to see a little bit of the game. >> it's a wonderful experience. it's very exhilarating. it's where the real diehard fans are that can't afford to go in and can't afford a ticket. >> reporter: now, this is -- as far as knot holes go, this is a pretty big one and a lot can happen in just three innings so it doesn't have to cost you a small fortune is all you want to do is be part of the celebration. we're live at at&t park, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. and of course a lot of fans would love to get their hands on a piece of history, like how
6:49 am
about pablo sandoval's home-run hitting bat. sorry, not for sale. the giants ralost track of some key items from the national league championship game. bob redell is live at the ballpark this morning. bob, you told us they did track down one item but apparently there's still something missing? >> reporter: you are correct. good morning to you, jon. the giants and major league baseball always try to keep bats, balls, other pieces of equipment of historical significance like this object we're about to show you. the ball that marco scutaro caught in the rain monday night in game 7 against the cards. the final out that clinched the pennant for the giants. the problem is no one knows where it's at. if you have an inkling, give them a call. the team almost lost another piece of equipment that made giants baseball history that night. we're talking about the bat that hunter pence used in that game
6:50 am
to hit a two-run double. that's the bat that broke apart and hit the ball three times before sending the ball out in the field. the giants accidentally sold it in their from the clubhouse store where fans can buy memorabilia from the game. rick alonia did, forking over $400 for pence's bat. after a change of heart central command pressure from his sons, he decided to return it yesterday to hunter pence. >> i thought it would be really important to get it back to him before he started the game, since it has all this new magic to it, right? >> reporter: in exchange he received a signed bat from pence and also got to watch last night's game in the suite that the ceo sits in when he's watching these games. now, fans after last night's game rushed the from the clubhouse store looking for anything related to pablo' performance, specifically his bat. as you heard amy mention, he's already donated that to
6:51 am
cooperstown. reporting live outside mccovey cove, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll have continuing coverage of all things giants throughout the morning and of course all day long on nbcb nbcbayarea.com. check out our home page for the latest world series news. 6:51 and it sounds like there's going to be good weather. giants got game two an mother nature will make it a nice one. >> she is. if you got tickets to this game, you picked the right game weatherwise anyhow. hopefully they'll win again. 6:51, taking a live look at a drizzly shot of the golden gate bridge this morning. now we're not going to see wet weather today, oh, no. once we clear this fog out that's generating the drizzle, it's going to be really nice. abundant sunshine and really, really good air quality. later on it's going to be crystal clear out there. 6:51. starting with this live look at san jose, you can't see from this picture because it's rather dark but we have mostly cloudy conditions here as well. a cold front came through and

6:56 am
