kinda crazy, huh? >> we're in november! >> already here. hard to believe. but it is 4:31. it's still very early and it is november 1st. good morning, everybody, happy to see you. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning, but first let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you two, all the parents out there including jon, laura and mike probably a little tired after taking those kiddos out for trick-or-treating. this morning we have shadows on the radar so give yourself ample time to get to work. showers coming down overnight and at this point they're mostly concentrated in the east bay so i'll zoom in and show you all the way through antioch there's light to moderate rain showers coming down and pretty much slick conditions across the board. the showers will come to a close very quickly. also taking a look at a really great kweekend. let's check on your drive with

mike. >> fortunately for you it's raining more at that than yesterday. we're looking over to oakland where christina was showing the rain coming through the area. the glowing lights, slick roadways, reflexes and slick conditions so keep that in mind. we will look at a number of accidents as we look eastbound heading away from the maze over toward park and we do see some slowing. there is appear accident getting moved to the shoulder, east heading into castro valley out of oakland. now 580 through livermore, both areas. where you see the green on the maps, that's where the road is wet. there may be ponding and puddling on the off-ramps. we'll track the rest of those and give you more coming up. back to you. well, that world series party and halloween are both over, but the cleanup continues. crews working deep into the night trying to mop up after the giants victory parade. look at that stuff. this was the scene in san

francisco civic center last night. the wet weather has made the cleanup even more difficult. hang in there, gentlemen. >> get some gloves. 4:33. san francisco police also investigating a double shooting that happened just blocks from the parade. two men were shot at leavenworth and turk around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. one was shot in the head, the other treated at the hospital and eventually released. police are still looking for the suspects. they think the incident was gang-related. san francisco police will address a recent spike in gang violence later today. the san francisco police department trying to turn to social media and catch two people who lost their mind and set a muni bus on fire. this happened during the giants victory celebrations on sunday night. police releasing this video and pictures of the vandals setting that bus on fire. at this point they're hoping those images will spread on social media and lead them to the people responsible. >> this kind of behavior in san

francisco, we will identify you, we will arrest you, we will prosecute you and you're going to pay f it. >> police say social media helped them grab 22-year-old gregory granite for spashing that muni bus window with a barricade. completely ridiculous. anyone connected with this will have to pay part of the $700,000 that cost to replace it. pleasanton police now know the name of a woman whose remains were found stuffed inside a trash can in may. she's being identified as 24-year-old ana flores of stockton. investigators have arrested javier sandoval in connection with her death. they served a search warrant at his home which she shared with him. there were four suspects in a smash and grab at a consignment store. this happened just after noon on tuesday on industrial road near highway 101 in san carlos.

the masked men used pepper spray to intimidate store employees. they took off in a new gray ford mustang with two black racing stripes running down the center. anyone with information is asked to please call police. a marin county teenager accused of stealing a lamborghini is expected back in court today. max wade is accused of stealing a lamborghini from a san francisco dealership. he's also accused of trying to kill a teenage couple. a judge ordered the 18-year-old to stand trial earlier this month. he is expected to be formally arraigned and enter his plea today. remember that huge shark bite on a surfboard? this morning we're hearing from the surf are that was attacked by a great white shark off the coast of eureka. he's 25-year-old scott stevens. he was surfing when the shark bit him and pulled him under water. he said he never saw it coming.

>> it pinned me under and shook me. i punched the shark on the side of the head a couple of times until it released me. >> that's how you do it, punch the shark right in the nose. doctors say steven, he's lucky to be alive here because none of his vital organs were damaged. stevens remains in fair condition this morning and he vows he will surf again. >> and that is officially crazy talk. all right. 4:36. bay area nurses will be on strike this morning protesting their contract with sutter health. the california nurses association has already gone on strike five times since september of 2011 in an attempt to negotiate a new contract. the one-day strike affects seven hospitals affiliated with sutter health in the east bay. hospitals already hired replacement nurses. the alameda county district attorney is instructing prosecutors to allow some immigrants to avoid convictions in order to avoid automatic

deportation. it was announced for legal immigrants who have been convicted of misdemeanors. they can be given jail sentences or other penalties. it affects only legal immigrants who have not yet gained u.s. citizensh citizenship. the city of san leandro is cracking down on styrofoam. starting today a ban goes into effect at all restaurants within city limits. products include containers, the foam ones, plates, cups. supporters of the ban say foam is not recyclable and it often pollutes waterways and public spaces. it is 4:37. christina loren this morning said maybe we're tired after all the trick-or-treating. but christina, you might be worn out after that long day, hive shots on all. you were on the parade yesterday. >> waving to your fans. >> it was, oh, so forth it. i got pretty close to some of those giants as well. we have a good-looking day shaping up for us.

we're not going to deal with showers all day long. in fact we're getting through the bulk of the moisture for today at this point. so showers coming down from san jose all the way east into livermore. antioch getting some pretty good rain showers but most of the activity has pushed to the south of san francisco, so watch out for slick conditions. it has been raining overnight as you're probably well aware of. if you did try to take the kids out it might have been a little difficult north of the golden gate bridge, but the good news is today is going to be nice, warmer in fact. 71 in livermore, 69 in gilroy and 66 in san jose. showers coming to a close by noon across the greater bay area and that's going to lead to a lot of sunshine, better air quality, also dense fog. also we want to take a look at your weekend, so close now, we like to call this day friday eve around here. let's check on that thursday morning drive with mike. >> good morning, christina. we're looking over here to the live look at 880 past the truck scales just north of tesla. you see the bright lights are

glowing here. wet roadways and drizzle all the way down through fremont into millipepitas and san jose. for 880 there's an accident northbound side at the montague expressway off-ramp. the off-ramp from what i understand is open and we don't see any real slowing. green all over these maps. the highlighted portion means these are wet roadways and wet conditions throughout the bay area. here eastbound 580 at greenville, we still have an accident. a jack knifed big rig blocking the slow lane. west towards north livermore avenue, the accident moved off to the right-hand shoulder. no major injuries. you see the blue and the green scattered throughout the tri-valley pretty much all throughout the bay. as i take it away so you can see a little easier drive now, again slick conditions but there's an accident there. we'll end with a live look at the peninsula, slick on 101 through palo alto as well. back to you.

4:43. police in hollywood searching for a gunman who shot into a crowd of halloween revelers injuring three people. it happened about 10:00 last night along hollywood boulevard. this morning a acce17-year-old is in critical condition. a 14-year-old boy and 25-year-old man suffered injuries. police swarmed the scene, some in riot gear, to try to control the crowd. millions across the northeast waking up to another day without power. some surrounded by water. others simply looking for somewhere to call home. hurricane sandy knocking out power. president obama visiting areas with governor chris christie. he's promising federal help to residents as they return and try to return to their homes. >> we go through tough times, but we bounce back. the reason we bounce back is because we look out for one another and we don't leave anybody behind. >> we are coming back,

definitely, without a doubt. we are coming back, all of us, together. >> they have got to pull together for this. this is shocking. also new york's la guardia airport actually reopening for limited flights. it seems almost impossible but they're doing it. parts of the tarmac completely flooded by that storm and it could be several more days before the region resumes a normal flight schedule. in the meantime work continues on wall street this morning after a few small bumps dug the first day back after hurricane sandy. for a look at how futures are trading, we turn to jackie deangeles live at cnbc headquarters. good morning, jackie. >> reporter: good morning, laura. well, the fewer is pretty much flat this morning. after the markets resumed trading yesterday following that two-day shutdown due to monday's superstorm. stocks closed down as the insurers weighed on the market. concerns about loss estimates from the storm. trading, though, did go off without too many hitches. one market maker, knight

57 in novato, 61 in napa, 60 in san francisco where the cleanup effort is surely under way. 58 in san jose and 58 in santa cruz this morning. when it comes to the showers, what's happening is we have the tail end of a system sneaking through the bay area. most of the activity has pushed to the south of the golden gate bridge. still fair game for a few isolated showers north of the golden gate bridge as we head through 11:00 a.m. we'll continue to see clearing as we head throughout the second half of your day. these showers are racing out of the bay area as we speak. your futurecast tells the story. still getting moisture in palo alto, fremont and san jose. we stop the clock at 10:00 a.m. just some showers coming down on the mountains surrounding san jose. by 1:00 p.m., a nice, clear bay area, so we're looking good today. that someone will come right back out and warm us up into the 70s. 72 in livermore, 66 in fremont and 66 degrees today, a warmer

day in san francisco. as we get through this showery commute, the sun will come out for the second half of the day. kind of a mix of sun and clouds, though. by tomorrow it's going to be really nice. low clouds to start and the sun will be out in full force. dense fog expected saturday making way to a completely sunny finish. sunday, yes, if you've been lacking sleep lately, you'll get a little bit extra sunday morning as we fall back one hour, sleep in one hour. 81 degrees on sunday, great for outdoor activities. back to you, guys. >> thank you very much. turning to decision 2012 and it is getting closer. just five days to go before the nation heads to the polls. president obama is out on the road today. governor romney taking a different tone after hurricane sandy. we get the latest this morning from nbc's tracie potts. >> reporter: president obama is back on the campaign trail today. new nbc polls show him ahead by six in iowa, three in wisconsin and two in new hampshire, but this week he's focused on new

jersey. >> we are not going to tolerate red tape, we're not going to tolerate bureaucracy. >> reporter: touring storm damage with republican rival governor chris christie. >> i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion. >> there will be some folks who criticize me for complimenting them. well, you know what, i speak the truth. >> reporter: analysts say the president is picking up political points. >> the message that christie is sending voters is that obama is doing a good job. he's not a scary, socialist person, he's somebody that can be trusted. >> reporter: governor romney criticized the government's record helping small business. he never mentioned the president by name, but governor jeb bush did, claiming mr. obama is making excuses for his failures. >> it's almost as though the dog ate my homework is the reason why we're going through tough times. >> reporter: early voting reopened in maryland with some long lines. >> three hours? >> yeah, yeah. but it's worth it.

welcome back, everybody, on a thursday morning. this is a live look over emeryville. all over the bay area we're getting some showers out there. christina loren says you might want to dress accordingly, maybe take an umbrella as you head out the door on this 1st day of november. they expected a huge crowd and a huge crowd they got. giants fan showing up in force celebrating the team's second world title in three years. more than one million people packing the streets to see the g- g-men up close and personal. a lot of them playing hooky from work and students skipping out on class there. i guess that's all right on a day like that. school districts reporting a high number of absences on their campuses. and parents made the decision to bring their kids who what could

be a once-in-a-lifetime event. >> i thought he had to go to school but i was a bad mother. >> last year you were a bad mother? >> in 2010, not now. >> i don't know what she was thinking. she thinks school is more important than giants. she's wrong. >> one day the giants can rule. the buzz of the day was sergio romo's t-shirt. the words i just look illegal. more than 100 people ordered up those $12 t-shirts. the owner says he had never heard of sergio romo until yesterday. >> i don't think i'd say that. he's helping your business, buddy. you know, the parade may be over but the giants media tour will roll on. tonight barry zito and sergio romo will appear on "the tonight show." you can see leno directly following our 11:00 p.m. newscast. we'll see what he wears. >> when you're a superstar, you get to make all the appearances.

one of the giants newest lucky good luck charms has a name. giants fans, meet romo. she's a monkey born right before the giants went on their winning streak to boat the cardinals in the playoffs. look at that, gorgeous. zoo keepers considered names like posey, scutaro but, no, it's got to be romo. look at that. >> is that a compliment to have a monkey named after you? >> i'm not sure how you look at that. >> beautiful, as you put it. let's check the morning commute right now. do you have any monkeys named after you, mike? >> no. i would love that. we're looking over here to the hayward side of the san mateo bridge. i'm thrown by that now. look at how slick it is and look how much water is being kicked up by these cars and the taillights. that's what you're dealing with. it will be an issue until the sun can dry out all the rain.

this green is kind of all over the place. that green highlighting, that's where roadway and ground conditions are wet. maybe some puddling where you see the blue on the maps as well. but a smooth drive along the peninsula. north 280 at cesar chavez, an accident still on the shoulder. earlier spinouts reported. some flooding in the north bay, lucky drive. there's an accident southbound at 101 in san rafael but the green highlighting and as you're coming out of novato, highway 37 looks okay and dryer for that pavement. we end with the bay bridge also slick and puddling there, guys. back to you. the window for this year's mavericks surf contest opens in just over a week. organizer jeff clark has announced the contest will start on november 9th and run through march 31st of next year. when the contest is called, 24 of the world's best surfers will have 24 hours to get to pillar point near half moon bay and hit those huge waves. the right conditions didn't
