central park right down the street from us had 4.3 inches which is a record for this time of year. one of the things new york does very well, they are very good at clearing the streets. because when i woke up i was like did it snow? you had to look on the grass or rooftops. but i got to tell you, the people -- if you think about what's happening to the folks who were really hit by that hurricane -- i said this last time. but when i lived in new orleans used to 90-degree weather and what you're trying to do is not put more clothe on after a hurricane, you're burning up. but you can live in your house. you can clean up. >> if you have a house. >> right. but this is added in, the freezing temperatures. but there is one little bright spot. stephanie gosk was doing an interview with a family on long beach, long island where my assistant lives. she was interviewing this family without power for multiple days. >> ten days, i think. >> she's got kids and trying to keep them warm. anyway there was a magic moment. this never is captured on tv. >> timing is everything.

♪ everyone has a moment today you are meeting our newest everyone has a story contest winner. ashley and francis. ashley wrote in to tell us about her mom. her mom adopted ashley when she was just an infant. >> francis has worked with special education children for more than 15 years and has battled thyroid cancer herself. first, here's their story. >> my mother frances is the most kind-hearted, good-spirited, patient, beautiful, intelligent and loving person that i've ever met in my entire life. in 2002 my mom was diagnosed with having thyroid cancer. the doctor was able to get rid of all the cancer and it has yet to come back. my mom never seems to be scared,

and she always makes sure she stays strong for the family. she has worked in special education for over 15 years and absoluly loves what she does. at our church she worked for an organization which helps to provide foster children with homes. she loves this field of work because she was adopted by her grandmother when she was younger, and she adopted me when i was only 2 months old. i am so blessed that i was adopted by such an amazing woman to provide me with more love and support than i could ever ask for. i always wonder where i would have ended up if my mother had not adopted me when she did. my mother is truly an inspiration. no matter what ups or downs our family is going through, she never stops loving or trying. her love is unconditional, and i just hope that i can be half of the woman that she is when i am older. >> wow. >> beautiful. >> can you see why we responded over their letter, and ashley

and her mother frances are here this morning. >> what's it like for you, frances, to hear the words that your daughter describes you as well? >> i'm almost in tears. first of all, didn't even know she was doing all this. i was really shocked. >> she's a sneaky little thing. >> does it all the time. always doing something for me. >> she could be saying a lot of things about her mother, so i know as a mother my kids talked about me that way, it would break my heart. >> yeah. she's wonderful. she's always up-spirited. >> i love how you look up to your mom, and you say you want to be half the mom that your mother is when you get older. describe the relationship you have with your mom. >> very close. that's the thing. out of everybody in my life, she has the most patience between her and my dad. they've been through a lot of up ups and downs with me and my siblings but they never gave up on us. i appreciate that. >> you were adopted yourself? >> you know what that means to be adopted into a lovely home. it's all the difference in the world, isn't it?

blizzard conditions setting up the northern plains and the northern rockies. look at the temperatures. talking highs in the 20s and 30s in some locations. ahead of that system mild across the south. texas, dallas, houston, 82. and we have snow last night across the east. now things are warming up the. 50s. they'll turn into 60s as we head on towards the weekend. let's move into the weekend. saturday brutus continues to move across the west. cold air coming all the way down towards the southwest. phoenix only in the 60s. l.a. also plenty of snow breaking out towards the plains and risk of severe weather and windy weather up and down the central u.s. got football games going on saturday from texas all the way up to missouri. windy conditions. warm wind here, 81 in houston, 70 in kansas city. cold air behind that system. only 20 in billings. some 20 plus degrees below average for this time of the year. as we head towards sunday, the east coast is warm and dry. 60 in new york city. that's some brightening news. also more showers and thunderstorms here across the midwest. look at the temperature
