7:45 am
and women. 93% of african-americans, 71% of latino, 70% of asian americans. these are huge majorities that voted for obama. women number more and vote more than men gave obama that 55-45 margin of victory. he cobbled together these amazing groups. losers, the republican party for its inability to go beyond the increasingly narrow base of middle-aged and older white men. also the extreme right wing of the republican party which stressed the right to live, the right to life i should say under any circumstances and almost contempt, if you will, for the poor as noted in romney's infamous 47% remark. republicans in general may not hold these views but the fact is the extreme wing of the republican party took center stage and made it comparatively easy for democrats. >> there are a lot of folks who might have gone republican if not for that extreme element and
7:46 am
it makes it hard for people who might be more in the middle. so in california, winners, losers. >> same thing. winners jerry brown. this guy deserves a medal. he denied public opinion polls. also, democratic candidates for state legislature. they managed to win a two-thirds majority in each house which will allow that party to govern without republican obstruction. here's the history of it. the last time the state had a democratic governor and democrats controlled two-thirds of the legislature was 1883. 1883. so this is really a moment for democrats.
7:47 am
also state republicans like the national team who now find themselves with only -- it's amazing. 29% of the state's voters. 29%. you can't win elections when you count on basically a quarter of the public as your base. it just won't work. it won't work. this is even worse than national republican party. california republicans have to find a way to broaden their base if they hope to govern in the near future. >> we mentioned prop 30 briefly. safe to say that education was one of the winners at the local level had. >> absolutely. local schools which saw most of the parcel taxes pass, construction bond taxes pass, you mentioned proposition 30 all approved by voters. also san francisco mayor ed lee for passage of measure e. that's the new tax method approved by virtually everyone including business and labor. what's the last time you saw
7:48 am
those two come together? and the mayor of san jose that saw his 6-5 city council majority grow by one despite a questionable if not illegal campaign donations. losers, promoters of richmond measure n that would have added a tax on carbonated sugar beverages outspent more than 100-1 by the american beverage industry and also congressman pete stark. after 40 years lost his seat to a young deputy district attorney in a radically revised congressional district whose voters really collectively believed that stark's time had come. bottom line, people may see a little change nationally. obama won. democrats still in the senate. republicans in the house. but here in california, this state, which was democrat to begin with, became even bluer if we can use that word this time around. it's an interesting phenomenon and really the republicans have got to think about how they can
7:49 am
broaden their ways to open themselves up to minorities going in the other direction. >> i heard one of the strategist say we have a demographic problem. demographics are just people. you have to talk to people. >> it's a problem for everyone. democrats probably shoot me for saying this. the more one party a state becomes, you have accountability problems. you want to see a robust two-party system if possible. republicans have to think long and hard. >> you can get more of larry's political insight on nbcbayarea.com. just search for prop 0. on a lighter side of the election, "saturday night live" is giving us a glimpse of what it was like at republican presidential candidate mitt romney's house during election night. apparently he was doing some moping downing the pain of defeat in a carton of milk. milk after milk. >> mother sent me to come get you, father. paul ryan is doing speeds of strength in the drawing room.
